- 50 years of some of the greatest acting in the world. His work includes the films: I Claudius, A Man For All Seasons, Alien, Harry Potter, The Elephant Man, Scandal, Caligula, From The Hip, and many more. John passed away in January of 2017. He was 77 years old.
I was Lucky to see Mr John Hurt on stage about 3 times and I met him aswell and what a lovely, beautiful person he was....I loved him. A true gentleman....I miss him greatly.....An Amazing Actor.....❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What an elegant, wise, charming man. He will be remembered as one of the greats.
His portrayal as Caligula in I Claudius was pure acting genius.
I remember how he was upset because the senators had been celebrating the anniversary of the Battle of Actium. And toasting to the murder of his beloved great-grandfather Mark Antony. I wonder how he felt when Mark Antony tortured him in "1984".
John Hurt was an awesome actor. Caligula in I Claudius, John Merrick in the Elephant Man, Max in Midnight Express, Timothy Evans in 10 Rillington Place, Quentin Crisp in An Englishman in New York. The list is too long to mention spanning from 1961. When I heard he had pancreatic cancer and subsequently died I was very sad. RIP John Hurt - you were a legend.

Fell in love with JH when I saw him in 'The Naked Civil Servant'...such a great actor, and absolutely irresistible to watch.
He did a lot of narrations for documentaries too. Just has one of those voices. I remember him doing a space documentary when I was a kid. Lol
I remember the day I became aware of Sir John...It was a "Saturday Movie" (which always had to be somewhat wholesome as they were on when kids were home), but Channel 9 had a reputation of showing some that were borderline. It was "Cry of the Penguins". His performance from playboy to broken wildlife observer absolutely amazed me. From then on, I was a fan. "Scandal" was excellent, but his Caligula was breathtaking. I miss him terribly. Thank you for this interview, which took place at the height of his career. I truly enjoyed it.

If my novel ever went to movie, he would've been the perfect voice over for one of my characters. One of my favourite actors of all time. We will miss you Sir John

Mesmerising voice - I sat next to him at the 606 Jazz Club - he was doing a reading of a book for a friend of his and said he was mega nervous. Very nice guy and enjoyable evening. I was dying to ask him to do his Midnight Express voice..."it's not a fucking train"

'm guessing you've read a biography. I just looked at the Personal Life section of his Wikipedia page and saw nothing that would make me think he was even remotely "a wreck".
@@jimnewcombe7584 Supposedly, from what I've gathered scouring the internet, he was a heavy drinker and had a rough ride when it came to romantic relationships and described his early life as very lonely - no relationship with his parents. The love of his life was killed in an accident, he desperately wanted children which did come later (much later) but he didn't get the little girl he supposedly wanted. This is just skimming a couple of articles outside of wikipedia.
@@CandyKoRn Much like Robin Williams, John Hurt was a man who was often in pain. That's why he was so good at empathising with outsiders. It's why he could deliver pain, guilt and sorrow with a gravelly whisper. One of the saddest things I've read about him was a statement about his religious father when he was talking about death.
"Quick blessing at the end, you mean? If it did happen I would know it was my weakness rather than a strength. I hope I shall have the courage to say, "Vroom! Here we go! Let's become different molecules!" I saw the doubt in my father's eyes. He was 95. I was with him almost when he died."
John Hurt was agnostic and it was probably because he wondered if his father, a self-righteous snob who looked down on unholy people, really believed in God. Plus his creep of a brother was involved in a child abuse scandal later in life. Honestly, with a family like that, I wouldn't be surprised if John had turned to atheism but I think he was honest enough with himself to admit that he simply didn't know if God exists. All he knew was that religion had made his life miserable so I think his mindset was "if God exists, I'll meet Him when I'm dead. Right now, I've got a life to live."
Damn it, I wish I'd met this man. And I wish he'd done Series' 8 and 9 of Doctor Who. Series 10 too if his health held out long enough. He was too good to just be a one and done Doctor.
I still maintain that Alien was his finest work. A snob will tell you otherwise.
That will always be his most famous role. Elephant man was extraordinary but you wouldn't know it was him.
I liked him in Contact.

I'll have to check those out. Didn't Malcolm McDowell also play Caligula?
I met him at the VIFF in 1997 when he was promoting "Love and Death on Long Island".

A national treasure for our cousins across the pond. Be very proud. Few actors have gotten more out of me emotionally than he. I miss him. He commanded more attention (if that's possible) as he aged. He could have entertained us and made us think until he was 100.
Watch him in Name of the Doctor and Day of the Doctor. In the first episode, John Hurt made 2 lines and the simple act of turning around ooze gravitas. Then in the second episode, at the height of Doctor Who's popularity, without any prior knowledge of the show, playing an incarnation that was created at the last moment, and sharing the episode with all 3 of the most popular Doctors, John Hurt commanded the screen. He made it look easy, like he was destined to play the Doctor from the day he was born but had to wait 7 decades for it to actually happen.
