I was a valet at a famous Beverly Hills restaurant in the late 90s. As I returned the car to his lunch guest, his guest went inside to use the restroom. We engaged in small talk and he asked how long I worked there. I said it was my last day. I graduated college a week before and my first real engineering job was starting the following Monday. He shook my hand and congratulated me. Then he asked if it was something I loved to do. I said 'yes' then he said, 'Right, then we're both lucky to find work in what we love.' In that English manner. RIP Mr Hurt.
my mom said the opposite. steered me into a field I had absolutely no desire to go into. worked 14 years at a job I absolutely hated. when I confronted her about it her response was: "you're not supposed to like your job." great advice there mom. (sarcasm)
John Hurt. No matter what role he played, he emotionally visually took you there...total believable immersion. THAT is a special talent and rare. acting gift. I hope he knew what a gift he had.
I'm from Belfast my wife is from Edinburgh. 12 years ago we were driving through Galway heading to Salt Hill, stopping at the traffic lights I saw and said to my wife, look there's John hurt! She said where? I replied, there at the lights! She again asked where? I again replied, crossing the road, she again replied where! After John had crossed the road I asked my wife. Do you know who John Hurt is? She replied no! Funny story and I will always tell it. God bless you John, I really miss you for all the entertainment you gave us. 🙏
He was SO moving in "Elephant Man"....that definitely was a cry fest. I first remember him from the BBC's "I, Claudius" as Caligula. He was so fantastic. I'm sorry I never saw "The Naked Civil Servant".
Just watched a 1971 film co-starring John, called "10 Rillington Place." Tough subject matter. He and Richard Attenborough burned up that screen with scorching performances. Judy Gleeson is superb too. It's really a must see.
@@marktate460 it's a deeply affecting film and John's performance gives empathy and justice to the poor man he played. It was a tragedy in film, and real life. This is exactly why I refuse the death penalty as being anything to do with British law.
I don't think I have ever actually screamed in front of a show or movie, but I surely did when Caligula jumped out from the wings wearing a pretty see-through tutu in order to give Claudius and his senatorial friends a sneak preview of his ballet.
Wonderful man, the greatest voice in movie history imo. I remember watching the Bakshi Lord of the Rings in a cinema when I was a kid and being spellbound by his Aragorn delivery.
Ever since I saw his Caligula in I, Claudius I knew anything with John Hurt in it was worth checking out. Some (like the awful Partners) were only watchable because of his performance. Others were transcendent thanks to him. His father was a Church of England Vicar and his brother a Catholic monk. I don't consider that "following his father into the church". There must have been some very interesting discussions when that happened.
I live in a tiny town called chesterfield not many miles from shirebrook so it's so nice to learn that not only was john a local lad but a truly wonderful actor and it's so sad to know that John no longer with us r.i.p .
He also lived for 7 years in Woodville near Swadlincote in South Derbyshire where my Mum’s family lived for a few years. My Grandma on that side of the family was a woman of the church so I like to believe her and John crossed paths somewhere.
Englishman here in France. Every time I am forced to eat bland French food at social occasions, I always quote my favourite John hurt line: "First thing I do when I get back to earth is get some decent bloody food!". Which makes me smile anyway. Hopefully one day somebody else will laugh or better still, I won't be invited again. Such a charismatic chap with a voice like a pool of melted chocolate.
So many great performances..Caligula in "I Claudius", Dr Stephan Ward in "Scandal", & as the professor in "Love and Death on Long Island" just to name 3 in John Hurt's illustrious career.
Glenstal Abbey is in Murroe Co. Limerick, lovely grounds to walk, pitch and putt course across the road and the wonderful Clare Glens on 10 mins drive from Glenstal. We often go walking in Glenstal. When John visited, he met locals in the village and visited the local primary school, a gentleman.
Yeah, Midnight Express, is where I remember him from. Him chasing after Higbert the Cat. Never knew he was molested as a kid and needed a gap in his head filled by retracing his family roots. So many talk shows say that's a way to do it( bring you back to your sense of self, by reminding you your history personally connects to before you were born, and comes right up into the moment to where you are now( while still letting one think for themselves what it all means in their own way).
Best movies he ever did was alien and outlander. Keep dancing up there in heaven. RIP

The dead know nothing. They sleep until the day of judgement. The first resurrection. We then live with God for 1000 years and the after that satan and those who are unrepentant will be raised and destroyed once and for all in the final test. Read revelations. :D
For all of the big budget films that he honoured with his presence, I still remember how he could leave an emotional impression from his ability to portray a character from his performance in Mr Forbrush and the Penguins (1971). Not a great film, just a brilliantly understated performance.
I am a bit confused about this automatic transformation to Ireland & all things Irish. I remember him years ago being interviewed on Yorkshire TV & he clearly stated the impending move to Ireland was for tax reasons only! A bit of gilding the lily I think.
I first saw him in alien, I was just a kid but I realized he was a very good actor and special that stood above his cast members. I don't mean just the obvious scene, but his bit parts leading up to the gore.
I'm so glad this TV program invited this incredible actor to talk us about his life and family, unfortunately John Hurt didn't win any Academy award throughout his career as an actor, nevertheless the greatest actors don't need awards, Awards need them.
One of my absolute famous films was "A Man For All Seasons", from the play by Robert Bolt, about the Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, Sir Thomas More. In it, JH, plays "Richard Rich"...who, is always after More to get him a decent place at court...I won't say what happens because you may wish to watch the film, but JH's performance, even as a very young man..probably mid 20's...is every bit as good as the lead, Paul Schofield. Sorely missed.
John Hurt was the voice of Kilgharrah the dragon in the Merlin BBC series. I can imagine him in his dragon voice as he tells his family story. He also played Mr Olivander in the Harry Potter films. RIP John Hurt.
Interesting. I’ve been to Glenstal Abby on retreat. There is a boys school there and the monks have a nice guesthouse at the Abby for visitors. They follow the rules of Benedict. There are many things to do in the area and the grounds are beautiful. John Hurst appears to have a great relationship with his brother. The monks are very interesting men and spiritual men.
John Hurt was incredible in Alien and then years later turn into the doctor of course he was right for the doctor I imagine he always wanted to play a role like the doctor and I guess he may have enjoyed the role? I also seem to think he might of appeared in a classic episode of Doctor Who number one the first Doctor before he became famous? I think him as the War Doctor was brilliant as a secret doctor a missing story of the Time War but hopefully there's a where to fill that in as a storybook? SIR John Hurt R. I. P best Doctor ever

John was a lovely man and one of Britain's greatest actors. I could listen to his beautiful, distinctive voice for hours. R.I.P.
I miss him so much.
What an utterly talented man.
RIP John Hurt, one of the best voices to have graced great British actors.

Acted with him as an extra in Rob Roy. I got to hang out in between shooting scenes with both him and Tim Roth. Great guy.
Awesome! I love that movie. (But then, I would...)
What was Tim Roth like? He's got a bad reputation, but he was a hilarious villain.
Lucky so and so.
Wow! It must be such an honor to be in one of the world's most underrated movies of all time

John Hurt. What an amazing actor and human being. Giants walked once on Earth and he was, without any doubts, one of them.
John Hurt seemed like a great guy and I would have loved to meet him. Rest In Peace, Sir. You were a true gentleman.
John Hurt as Winston Smith: perfect casting, pitch perfect performance.
I fell in love with John Hurt after hearing him voice Hazel in Watership Down. I could listen to him all day.
@Thomas Pickens
The Storyteller is where I know John Hurt from too. I'm obsessed with it so he was a hero of mine.
RIP master actor from England. I cried during "Elephant man" (from a french fan).
He was SO moving in "Elephant Man"....that definitely was a cry fest. I first remember him from the BBC's "I, Claudius" as Caligula. He was so fantastic. I'm sorry I never saw "The Naked Civil Servant".
J A The Naked Civil Servant was his best role. Quentin Crisp was such an interesting brave man. It's very much worth buying it on DVD.
aahh that role, yes...brings tears to the eyes
R.I.P Mr. Hurt. I did so enjoy your acting.
"Can't you read that sign?"
"Yes, it says, 'Thank you for not smoking.' But as I am smoking, I don't expect to be thanked for it."
He was my favourite voice for narration, great actor too, RIP John Hurt.
Both brothers have lovely voices.
One of THE most mesmerising actors of his generation! His voice was so beautifully distinctive/ lyrical ...
I miss him. I always made an effort to watch any movie that he was in. One of my favourite actors.
I’m here watching this from Ireland.
John Hurt, an actor of immense skill, always fascinating and authentic.
Just watched a 1971 film co-starring John, called "10 Rillington Place." Tough subject matter. He and Richard Attenborough burned up that screen with scorching performances.
Judy Gleeson is superb too. It's really a must see.
God the atmosphere in that that film and the performances were out of this world from all the actors

@Jonny Sevent no problem my pal. we both like the film, even if it is a hard one sometimes. should be too!

John Hurt was a Great Actor, Thank You Sir and may you Rest in Peace!!!
Wow I love that his brother is a monk! Awesome!
Loved hearing him talk, just such a iconic voice. He will be missed
His 1976 portrayal of the lurid Caligula made such an impression on me that I think about it to this day.
Truly creepy. That entire mini-series was a freakshow if you saw it fairly young for the first time. My oh my.
Ah yes the man who ate his and his sister's unborn child after removing it from her belly. What a character.
I don't think I have ever actually screamed in front of a show or movie, but I surely did when Caligula jumped out from the wings wearing a pretty see-through tutu in order to give Claudius and his senatorial friends a sneak preview of his ballet.
I still think of him as Caligula too!

Yes I became his fan with I Claudius. The Elephant Man and Scandal were great too!
John Hurt played honorable characters. Great example for us all.
Absolutely THE best "Caligula" ever played---in "I, Claudius."
How nice is his brother Michael, such a charming man
so nice, he was reprimanded for child sexual abuse.
