I was in a long line at a bustop outside Waterloo Station (a lifetime ago) and a short scruffy man in front of me briefly turned to his right and, my word, it was John Hurt. I was dumbfounded. Couldn't figure what a Hollywood actor was doing waiting for a bus. He got on the bus and people recognised him but no one said anything. Close to Victoria he got off and we all smiled at each other with raised our eyebrows. What a weird and wonderful moment.
John Hurt was a genius of an actor. I've actually just watched The Naked Civil Servant for the first time. It was amazing and he was phenomenal. I could never watch The Elephant Man again. It's the most magnificent performance I've ever seen but I've sobbed like a baby every time I've watched it. Nobody could act that role.
Love everything about this gentleman, that voice, I swoon every time. One of the greatest actors and larger than life personalities of the screen and stage. Adore his voice in classic timeless animated characters, whether a villian or hero. He could portray anything in any leading part. I find his face uniquely handsome and adorably boyish. ❤ ♥️ 😍🥰😘
John was so perfect as Quentin Crisp. They needed a brave man to play a brave man and John Hurt was that man. Not just a skilled character actor. He was a leading man, most unconventional by design who did his utmost to play the roles others were scared to. And god, did he play them. A bit like Mr Crisp did with his life.
I can't believe John Hurt was in Alien the first time I saw it. He didn't contradict his sci-fi fiber by playing the War Doctor. The part I love the most of him is John Merrick, but I always hear him in my head with Adam Sutler's voice.
I love the guy’s talent; his accent, for some reason, makes everything in his performances sound so brilliant… he EARNED the Midnight Express nomination… (haven’t seen Elephant Man) sadly he was up against Walken that year, he would’ve won no doubt
Don't forget about John's terrific performance in 10 Rillington Place as Timothy Evans who was wrongly hung for the murders of his wife Beryl and baby daughter Geraldine. Great movie but harrowing
John Hurt was always phenomenal in whatever roles he performed. The Elephant Man must been physically challenging due extremely elaborate makeup. I recall doing Children's theater production where I had to perform Orge costume made of thick rubber padding. Undertaken I was sweating so heavy. When brought couple kids onstage. One turned me and said. Yucky! You're very sweatty!!!😊😂
A total chameleon. My favorite actor ever.then gary oldman, viggo Mortensen, christian bale,, sam Rockwell are some that i admire their versatility but none like sir hurt
He was in that group that was identified as The British Invasion in terms of actors along with O'Toole, Burton, Harris, Courtney, Stamp, Caine etc etc but he didn't do much in the States for a while and wasn't known for Hellraising so he went under the radar a bit. He was as good as any of them though. RIP.
First remember him from Mr Forbush and The Penguins, where he plays a scientist in the Antarctic who has to kill a penguin for an experiment, v v sad and touching
Multiples characters define some actors's careers and if Bruno Ganz was born to play Hitler, John Hurt was born to play Quentin Crisp and regarding The elephant man, John played a real life's character, which was so heartbreaking and appreciable, he coulda won the Oscar, but the winner was Robert De Niro because of his performance in Raging Bull.

Phenomenal actor.... breath taking. So modest yet an absolute genius. Miss him so much. RIP dear John 💔

I couldn't agree more. He was my favourite actor of all time and that beautiful voice was instantly recognisable .

His work in the Elephant man is an acting benchmark
His timing and delivery is flawless.
John Hurt was a legend
One of my favorite actors of all time. The Naked Civil Servant was absolutely brilliant. And The Elephant Man was amazing.
I agree, one of my fav actors, ever since I saw 1984, and that was certainly not his best role.

Great actor especially in the elephant man and 10 Rillington place.
Quinten Crisp was such a character and much loved personality, and John's portrayal of him was excellent.
I was sad when i heard john had sadly psssed away .he was a such a great actor a British legend
Irish
Maybe the best actor ever.
There are many wonderful actors, if pressed I would say it is a tie between Olivier & Brando, simply judging it based on acting skill, not charisma.
@@KevinSmith-wp9qs Yes Olivier is among ky favourites, Peter Ustinov was great too
@@mikesarantopoulos
Agreed Ustinov was great.

He has been AMAZING in ALL his roles and I've seen most of them.
Totally agree
One of my all-time favourite actors, a genius, humble, self effacing, but utterly brilliant!. So miss seeing him on screen. RIP John 💔
Tremendous actor 👍

And also as chancellor Adam Satler!
Fantastic actor. Probably one of favorites. RIP Mr. Hurt.
God I miss John Hurt 😢
Thank you. His voice even that young...
For me Claudius was Johns greatest role
I love John Hurt
Miss him
Me too
AN INCREDIBLE ACTOR❤
He was great in all of his roles but I loved him in "Scandal" the most. That film is woefully under-appreciated.
7:58 I LOVE that he calls "Newsweek" "Newspeak." He was channeling Winston Smith again for a moment.

Wow. What a handsome voice he had.
C'est John . Délicat et so british !!
He was so Remarkably….Fabulously Outstanding, Untouchable in his Craft that others can only marvel in his Genus talent of the Art…Of Acting…….
Fair play to John Hurt, a true great.

Snitter voice actor (Plague dogs).
Rest in peace John Hurt.

Он гений.
Incandescent. Merrick. Caligula. He was a giant.

Forgot Finney.

Hard to believe he's no longer with us.
Hazel-rah
I have new productions ready ft. Anthony B, Fantan Mojah, Pinchers, Luciano and Busy Signal. They are live in my chan now!
No 1984...?
how come he was routinely cast as a homosexual? I assume its that little-boy face.
nah let's discuss Paris Jackson's Tats. fools out there.
Unnatural affection is repulsive and is not bigotry at all.
John Hurt’s handsome !!!
He was fantastic as Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment.
