UPDATE: I heard from Nilight and they said that the reason the slots are so wide is that I assembled it wrong. I followed their instructions. They say that I should have put the plate in the middle of the plastic connector. That is not what their exploded diagram in the instructions shows, but is in the photos. I tried the way they said it is supposed to work, and then the plastic clamp could not be tightened down on the tube. Nilight said "It is normal to be slightly loose." and "Please be assured that we have conducted driving safety tests before producing this product." I'm keeping mine the way I did it in the video. While I'm on the subject of things I'm doing wrong, I have had a lot of comments saying that the GPS and WIFI antennas do not need to be outside of the vehicle, they work fine even when mounted inside. This is probably a case of I'm just set in my ways. Back around 20 years ago I got a handheld GPS unit that had a signal strength meter for each individual satellite, and I found that I always had a better signal outside of the vehicle. Because of that, I prefer an external antenna. However, I'm sure technology has advanced in the past 20 years, so it probably is fine to put the antenna inside. Hmmm, maybe they should give me another identical radio so I can do a comparison test...
I've seen too many channels that "review" some bit of free kit and they're always obviously reading from a script. Thanks for "violating" the manufacturer's demands!
“Maybe at some future date that’ll never happen, I’ll take care of this” 😂 That was the best quote from this video! I do the same wishful thinking all the time ha
Btw I love the way you squint over your glasses when handling something small close up. As an awfully shortsighted person with glasses myself I adopted this habit myself a long time ago. I always call it my superpower because I can change my focus and see tiniest things really well when i'm really close to them. Only thing is I have been told repeatedly that it looks really odd from the outside, so I find it quite comforting that I am not the only one using this technique.

I have some real world advice on your upholstery repair The repair your repair is tearing and will tear more when you sit on it is because of all the force being applied to those threads on that rotten leather that was weak enough to tear in the first place. Place a piece of vinyl, Naugahyde, or real leather of the same color underneath the rotten leather with adhesive along the bottom of the rotten leather and on top of the good material. Urethane adhesive like goop works very well. Pull the rotten pieces of leather as close as you can to each other to form a seam and let it dry. . When the adhesive dries along all of that surface area, then take your curved needle and further strengthen it( and keep it from lipping up) and run it along the seam in a running stitch like you used before. This repair will look nicer and be very sturdy. If on top of that repair you want something that looks cosmetically even nicer, buy one of these and place it on top with the closest matching color or just use black.
You Sir, are living the dream. 👍Your thoroughness and calm demeanor make learning so much easier for those less experienced. Not enough is said about "mildly capable" 4WD rigs. Not an all out crawler, but can take you off road on small adventures. And, is great for every day.
If you have some extra good spare roof rack cross beams, it might be a good idea to add one or two extra so it can support more weight for when you load the roof carrier.. I like the look of that light carrier, if it works out well for you. I may consider getting one for my ZJ
If ever a channel deserved more subs, this one is it! I look forward to these videos... they are always informative AND entertaining, which is my favorite combination. The only negative thing I can say about Low-Buck Garage is that it makes me want to do stuff like this, and I am old and cranky. Well, at least old. I'm actually pretty laid back, which doesn't help with getting things done. So, I'm probably not having fun. Who knew?
35:52 look up baseball stitch. Pretty simple affair, very durable. Also, use wax on the wire. Get yourself a lump of quality wax and pass the wire through it to load it up with wax. Helps with several things, passing it easier through the material, lasts longer, and when you rub against it (like with clothes) because of the wax, it doesn't fray as easy as normal wire would.
You really are a dedicated man with all that finishing and persistent attention to details. I would have just stripped those blue dash parts out, burned them for funzies and left it at that.
42:15 You passed what I believe was the metric power setting!!!! I would think if you change the “use newton meters” to use pound feet, it’ll show HP instead of kW
We've bought a few of these atoto. They're pretty good. You might want to use some masonry twine and a stylus pen to be able to adjust the screen brightness or other necessary controls on screen needed with gloves. The auto brightness we've had issues with it changing when we drive with no drl and run the headlights. That's our failure not the atoto.
Air shocks on rear to offset varying overload rear vehicle variables. Also good excuse for air compressor installation for air down for smooth rides on rougher off roading. Write down hitch height before installing air shocks when vehicle is empty so you'll always have a base line as you load your vehicle including adding a trailer.
Best dry sense of humor in all of RUclips. I was having a crappy day until I saw you watching a video about the jeep that you were working on which is the jeep that you are now sitting in which is the jeep that you were then editing which makes the video that I was watching in the future but it was in the past since it was 5 minutes ago.
Look, I need to say this. what an incredible video! The level of expertise and workmanship that James has is what I hope to reach one day in my life. The humor in each video is simply sensational and only seems to get better. Thank you James for another incredibly impressive video.
Because of your videos I found the motivation to be a little creative and rig up a "custom" exhaust for my 83 f150. I was just before taking it to a shop but instead I did it on my own with a hammer, a 2 inch ball, and JB weld. Thanks for the inspiration
Very cool. Practical, versatile, fun to drive (5 speed V-8). If you’re not going far in your daily during, the V-8 gas mileage isn’t going to hurt the wallet much.
Someone showed me to have a switch to "arm" the big lights, but to trigger them with the high beam switch so it's easy to turn them off quickly if needed. This was for 55-100 watt Hellas back in the late 1900s
It's the law in a lot of states that auxiliary lights either have to be covered or only be able to turn on with the low beams. That's also the way the factory wired them.
Absolutely my favorite channel, Your videos are always full of surprises, never imagined you putting high tech devices on low tech vehichles, i love it, you are absolutely a wizard at what you do, keep it up.

I swear by an ATOTO. I've had 3 of them in 3 different vehicles and I absolutely love them. I've tried a bunch of different ones, I even tried a $800 pioneer and hated all of them. That ATOTO will last forever. I recommend them to anyone looking for a good android stereo!
I mostly hoard old goldwings but I do have a pretty good collection of Grand Cherokees also. Lemme save you some time, when your power windows stop working it's because the wires in the driver's door hinge area have broken.
By the way, huge fan!, You may be my favorite real world zero waste fabricator that uses imagination and elbow grease instead of money! Certainly whenever possible!
Wow, thanks for the great video. This finishes up the series and that's satisfying. You're actually getting a little modern with this thing, haha. I'm looking forward to a followup on the 2$ jeep project !
Nice job on the radio, the factory 1.5 DIN radio opening is evil. I've got a 98 ZJ with that exact dash and electronic climate control. Recently the mode door motor died and the part can no longer be gotten new and even if I thought I could repair it the position it's in makes me believe the entire heater box has to be removed to get to it as it's directly above the trans hump on the bottom of the heater box with about a quarter inch of clearance. Maybe a younger more flexible person than me could do it, but at 6'4", 230 and 66 years old, I can't. So I wound up hooking a coat hanger to the levers to move them. I love the ZJ, but I dread working on the dash. If I ever tore the heater box out I'd probably build a custom dash and heater controls and sell off the original parts. I documented the testing and fix on my channel if anyone's interested.
if you wanted to strip that blue paint off, just spray it really good with EZ-off oven cleaner and put it in a trash bag for 24 hrs tied up. it will just wash off after 24 hrs without harming the plastic at all. its an old model car builders trick, works like a champ👍
I know this whole video is an ad.... but I don't care because you have made it awesome in a way no one else on RUclips does. Keep up the great work and have fun, because if you're not having fun, you're doing something wrong. Cool little infotainment unit too, btw.
If I can chime in as well; I really didn't mind that you might be getting an offer from a company to promote their product because you kept it interesting by cutting thru the mundane stuff and moving right along. Not offended at all Sir. tnx for dah show. ben/ michigan

I've been watching and enjoying your videos, now how can I be your friend? You are exactly the kind of guy I could hang out with. Your smarter though. I like the way you think. I want to be like you when I grow up 😂. I will be 71 in July 12. Brian Washington State. Life as we know it today is going to change soon. Getting better!😊
I love your videos. You are so funny to watch and I learn quiet alot from you. Pretty much everyone in the nordic countries, at least up north in lappland, we have extra lights on our cars so that we can see better in the dark. Espacially in the winter when we only have a few hours of sunlight.
I did a front hitch set up on my wj grand cherokee so I could use my whinch when needed without it always be out in the weather and like you showed its handy for moving trailers
New subscriber here all the way from Saudi Arabia, Love your content and your down to earth personality , humor, and of course your ingenuity 👍 Thank you.
Nice video James. Thank you for taking the time to put it altogether. I enjoy watching. I've said befor I am a Mopar guy and somewhat of a hoarder, DIYer and fixer upper, so your stuff hits pretty close to home for me all the time. When I worked at GM I drove every vehicle they made befor they went into production. Sometimes they were an older body with a new drivetrain (drivetrain was my area of interest) they called Mules. Sometimes I used fancy newfangled electronic stuff like backup cameras and rear radar warning way befor the public got it. But I never thought I would use it except exactly what you did for trailer hitch alignment. But, I have witnessed people driving right into the rear end of another car that was stopped, or crossing the centerline and hitting another vehicle head on, so I'd think about Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) or Collision Avoidance Systems (CAS) especially if it can see a deer a dog or a child on a tricycle coming in from the side. Maybe you'll get an aftermarket kit and show us how it works. OK, Fine Business, see in the next one. ben/ michigan
I put an Atoto in a 02 Ram and couldn't be happier. It can be finicky about connecting to my phone but damn thing can do anything. I spent much more time cutting the dash guts up to fit the unit but the fishing was a breeze on that truck. I just put all my antennas on the very top edge of the inside windshield. Set it up right the first time and you'll get lots of good service from it.
Thank you again. You were my inspiration to convert my niner to a five speed, which is a blast to drive. I truly regret not driving it down to Tucson when I met you at the Duct Tape drags. Your channel is both informative and calming, helping me to make progress as projects continue.
My first car is a ZJ that I owned since I was 17. I made it a 5.9, and eventually a 5 spd. It's my daily driver, and "grocery getter" still. Almost 4 years after the manual swap, I'm still happy as a clam with it, and I'm basically over the moon every time I drive it even to just the corner store & back. It also serves well as a mom-wagon, cause even my kid loves the ZJ. You'd also be surprised how many cars it absolutely stomps from a red light. Hope you're doing well, James!
Totally agree with the 5.2/5 speed combo. That's what I put into my '02 Dakota. Plenty of power and good economy too. And lower maintenance than an auto trans. I started with a V6 5speed Dak and swapped a 5.2 into it. Straight bolt in. Then you have to deal with the electronics. Ah, the electronics. I should have just tossed the EFI and swapped a carburetor onto it. Lesson learned.
I've been a subscriber for a while now I've watched your channel before but this is the first time I started watching your videos and using the backup camera to point forward underneath your truck is absolutely brilliant I never thought of doing that it's so simple now you know everybody's going to start doing it that watches your channel and you're going to see all these off-road channels doing it now
Did you come up with that boat thing? something you found online because that is also genius I'm really starting to enjoy watching your videos it's a lot of lot of good tips and ideas in your man I really like it your humor is great products are awesome I love you sarcasm it's a way of life LOL..
I really like this episode because I have a 88 Jeep Cherokee XJ original red got the original trim Factory underbody coating rebuilt 4 L 31 inch Firestone destinations 4 1/2 inch lift the only thing that I am not impressed with is for some reason it didn't come with a high output throttle body "WHY"@@@ its sooo dogish but ok fer now had as well an 88, 92,94,98xjs,06 65th anniversary grand cherokee WJ... WHY so many X's and W's JEEP???
The GPS antenna you can just paste on the dashboard. No need to put it on the roof. As long as it is under the windescreen it will work. I have it like that on my car.
UPDATE: I heard from Nilight and they said that the reason the slots are so wide is that I assembled it wrong. I followed their instructions. They say that I should have put the plate in the middle of the plastic connector. That is not what their exploded diagram in the instructions shows, but is in the photos. Haha, I'm sure a second radio would be nice for comparison
That's also because old vehicles were massive metal cages and current one are more of plastic-glass enclosures.

Remember that there are smart hoarding and dumb hoarding. Hoarding for actually repurposing is smart.
Never hoard just for the sake of it.
I have some real world advice on your upholstery repair
The repair your repair is tearing and will tear more when you sit on it is because of all the force being applied to those threads on that rotten leather that was weak enough to tear in the first place.

One of the best edited and funny videos I’ve seen in quite a while! This channel is growing on me fast!
Red and green are literally complimentary colours. They are MEANT to go together
I’m glad the touch screen works with your fingers. Thanks for another great video.
love the grand cherokee and the cherokee. most people going on about wranglers but honestly these are so much more capable
I love your videos. You are so funny to watch and I learn quiet alot from you.
Pretty much everyone in the nordic countries, at least up north in lappland, we have extra lights on our cars so that we can see better in the dark. Espacially in the winter when we only have a few hours of sunlight.
You are a genius…and still have a flip phone!!
Great video as always, thank you for entertaining 🤗
Love the videos you put out! Keep up the good work!
I just love your sense of humour. So whitty. And dry. Great content. 😊
Flip phone... you're killing me brother :)
"V8 and a 5 speed the way all vehicle should come" AGREED!💯
*"The engine still hasn't learned it's got a 5 speed behind it!"* 🤣 Enjoyed the video James. Happy wrenching 🔧🔩
This channel is amazing, 45 min passing like nothing!
20:20 excellent flip phone. I am a fan.
Awesome James. I just finished installing my grizzly lockers and 5.13 gears in my 1 ton swapped yj. Thanks for the motivation.
The discussion of RUclips that begins at 36:39 is one of the zaniest diversions I’ve seen on LBG videos. It’s why I keep coming back.
Gotta say excellent job, I especially like the dongle and data it's giving you access to, duel camera not too shabby either
