I bought a 1949 Wagon and tried to drive it 2,164 miles home

- While messing around on Facebook marketplace I stumbles across this 1949 Willys Wagon for sale in Missouri. It had essentially the same drivetrain as my 1930 Dodge car, and would be a perfect candidate to put my tracks on for the winter season. So I bought a plane ticket and flew out to Missouri, got a long distance @lyft to the south east, and bought the Willys. The next morning I topped off all the fluids and headed out across the country. I ran through Kansas backroads, rainstorms, blizzards, mountain ranges, and dense fog, and had an awesome adventure along the way!

So what do you think, keep it on tires, or put tracks on it??
And for everyone saying leave the tracks on the Dodge… Yes, they are staying on the Dodge, I have two sets.
I'm pretty impressed you found a Willy's from the Midwest that's not rotted out . Definitely put it on tracks !
I say keep it as it is it looks like an amazing recovery rig
I'm voting put tracks on the Willy's. That thing would look so bad ass
You bought it for tracks, put it on the tracks.
YES on the tracks ! When you pull out guys in $70K new trucks, just tell them it's stock other than the tracks :)
Don't be conflicted. Do not change a thing. It works and makes the world smile.
VERY IMPRESSIVE. SOMEBODY BUILT A SOLID RIG. DON'T MESS WITH IT! I LOVE IT!❤
I vote to keep it as is. Not a lot of these vehicles on the road, but a testament to good workmanship.
@@arlenbell4376 keep it as is but fix the wipers.
^^This
Agreed. Keep the ;49 as is.
Agreed keep it as is. Hi from Croatia 🇭🇷💪💪💪
not a lot of these vehicles, and how many do you think are on tracks?
i think i would prefer the 1 of 1
Reliable, functional, classic, fun to drive, kept you safe in dodgy weather conditions, and looks great...keep it as is.
If it works, DON'T MESS WITH IT !!
What an awesome wagon.
Casey you got to keep as is. It’s perfect. Don’t be another tuber that takes great old vehicles and totally destroys them. Love your show!! Thanks for taking us along
😂 did you come here from Bad Chad for some sanity also😂
Like Matt off-road- I-fying that rare old Toyota. That old mix of a Jeep you just got will make someone very happy.
Don't destroy the Willys.
Already destroyed, very little of the original Willys left. Shameful and unnecessary desecration.
@simonbremner2707 I started watching him a bit last year, he does cool stuff, but its all butchered garbage, and he never finishes anything so it's all just waste.
My buddies and I found a 1949 CJ2 rusting away on a ranch. We restored it all original. Turned out great. Won a car show for best restoration. We were a bunch of novices having never done any restorations. One of the best times of my life.
I vote for keeping it as is. It's sweet!!
Of all the tools you purchased for your drive home, who could have guessed the one item you would need the most at a critical time was the ice scraper/brush. 🤔
Love your pink and floral suitcase, by the way! 🥰
Your fleet of Frankenstein Vehicles is growing. Keep it up!!!!😅
Early on he said he didn't want a fleet, so, I guess he has a Motor Pool. Those that don't know, ask a Vet. Hopefully it's the Young Frankenstein of Frankensteen vehicles?
I wonder how many people will actually understand the Holiday Inn Express statement. That's an old commercial
well shucks anyone that became a genius staying there :)
I wonder if that Holiday Inn Express Suites hires illegal immigrants to work and then hides their I-9 forms like the one in Chehalis Washington does.
@@larry77117listen to joe rogen interview JD vance , vance talks bout bow he was talkin 2 a ceo of a hotel company (didnt mention name) n dude said he didn’t want trump in cuz he’d have to hire americans to work for minimum wage and hiring illegals in cheaper, kinda nuts, same thing with sum areas of labor though , ive worked 3 restaurants in my life and the second u hit the kitchen / (behind close doors were the public doesnt see) the entire kitchen staff has always been illegal , ive had one kitchen tell me how they got “the guy” they go to which forges all there papers , had another dude tell me how he paid a coyote to sneak him in after being caught trying sneak in on his own , kinda nuts
reminds me of shanes dad
That Willys has passed muster. Leave her alone and just have fun with wife and daughter...
Thanks for taking us along on your trip.
Another vote for keeping it as is. Let other people see you drive around Bend, Redmond, and Prineville running errands.
Thanks for the memory. My mother's family moved to Portland from North Platt, Nebraska. We visited the families there in 1952 when I was 5 years old. Other than a cream separator on the back porch, and dad getting bucked off of a horse, I have a memory of a train pulled by a steam engine far across the open field. I can still hear the steam whistle as that train passed by. I hope you enjoyed the trip, and thanks for the tip to turn on back roads on the GPS.
You have officially hit the pinnacle of life. You have seen the world's largest ball of twine. I could only be so lucky.
😂
Merlin's old school stopped there in his old Model A
I wonder if he cut a piece off in case he might need it for the road 👀🤔
🤣🤣🤣
@@Boomhauer333 I think he was going to swing by worlds largest ball of duct tape next so he left the twine alone.🤣
On PBS in STL, there was a show of 3 guys in a blue Chrysler Mini Van traveling all over the USA stopping there. Wonder if you bring more twine can you add some? Guess I'll have to find out. If I get arrested, I hope they don't string me along. Ha! Peace
Man, I absolutely love that Willys..I've been looking around for one for a while..
I am 74. I bought a 53 Willys in 1970. with my student loan to drive on a ranch. The carburator kept breaking in half and I would literaly go into a drug store and by a big bandaid. It went everywhere. Do not mess with perfect . Old lady here.
Probably the best use of a student loan I've ever heard.
Proud to be a fellow American.
🤩
Keep it as is. Such a sweet ride.
24:21 Carey said, "I am not changing a thing". If it were me, I would change the oil... And fix that wiper.
The way you tell stories is unmatched!
To the gentleman that built that. Great job! No issues with a total drivetrain swap means it was well thought out and put together with good parts at a minimum. I would leave it alone other than steering upgrades. It is pretty cool seeing these on the road and it has proven it needs nothing so drive it and enjoy it this winter Casey and when the new rubs off you can always track it up for next season.
The previous owner did a pretty good job with that build. You've been buying some decent vehicles lately.
Keep it the way it is!
Thanks for taking us along on your adventure!
Keep it as it is , more smiles per mile !
Just keep that Beautiful Willis just like it is
Don’t change the thing it’s the most beautiful thing I ever saw. I’m jealous. I’m so damn jealous. That is my dream vehicle.
love the '49 gotta keep it as it is
Keep it as it is. It's awesome!!!
Looks great. Works great. Keep it as is.
Beautiful WW! Keep it as is and just enjoy it!
Put that cool hood on the Willis and keep it as is. It’s too cool to muck up with the tracks. It’s a perfect companion for that old dodge. They go together like bacon and eggs.
Hey I live in Denver CO. We got over 2, almost 3 feet of snow when we were supposed to get a few inches. So somewhat good choice on not going through.
Since you have other tracked vehicles to use, I vote to keep the '49 as is. It is a fast disappearing icon of its time. It is a beautiful example of a Willis Wagon. I wish I still had my old '50p that I once owned. Great trip, thanks for sharing it with everyone.
I would leave it alone it's a cool ride man
Man Casey I know that Jeep and the guy who built it in fact the rout you took went within 5 miles of my house and less than 25 miles of where that Jeep was built! Very cool
As a youngster , a friend of the family had one of these old jeeps , drove it all over , traveled in it his kids were raised with it , in 1976 it along with most everything he and his wife had , was destroyed in the Big Thompson flood . So few of these old vehicals remain in anything close to what they were , I think it needs to be kept as is .
She’s beautiful. Leave as is. Glad you had a fun and safe trip. Thank You for all you do. You are really appreciated. ❤️
I recognize that Harbor freight in Lee's Summit Mo. I would leave it as is. That's a good looking ride!
Id keep as it is wouldn't change nothin on the old classic its a beautiful machine !
Keep it as is. Great old Jeep. Gotta love it.
Another vote to keep that awesome sweet ride as is 👍🏻
I spent 10 years crossing Wyoming 2 times a week driving from Portland to Dubuque, IA and back as part of a sleeper team. In February 2020 I was in the sleeper when my codriver got into an accident like that in the Rawlins, WY aria. I wasn't hurt too bad but haven't driven team since. Following distance is everything. You can have all the skill in the world and do everything right but if you cannot stop in the distance that you can see, you will get in a wreck. Unfortunately, driving faster in the wind is safer in a big truck because you are effectively making your own wind that helps keep you from a blow over, but if it is iced over or the snow is flying too thick then you probably can't stop in the distance you can see. Sometimes the safest thing to do is park and wait it out.
I have so much vehicle envy….love that old Willy’s!!! 😊
Your luck enough to have that cool old rig I would leave tires on it and enjoy it. Thanks for a great video!!
😎👍🏻
I say, keep it the way it is. Hell, I'm 75 and pretty well all original. Some parts still work. You can't beat an antique. Great video. You drove through the back roads of my area in Southern Idaho. Thanks, and keep it safe out there.
Casey, just keep it as it is.😃 And thank you for taking us all on your wonderful cross-country adventure. I loved it. Cheers and many thanks.
Keep it as is. I'm not a Jeep or 4X guy but that thing is cool. The builder did a nice job.
not conflict! leave it alone! WILLYS is a great runner.
Love the jeep it is awesome keep the silver truck on tracks throw chains in the back and drive it as is with the awesome hood
That's way cool, i would daily drive that old Willys. Life's to short to drive a boring vehicle. There was an Willys panel deliver wagon local to me that was sbc swapped and used as a rolling advertising sign for a liquor store. It came up for sale a couple years ago but I was to broke to get it.
That was a fun road trip. Thanks for taking us along. Also glad it only took us 25 minutes to drive half way across the country. LOL. I say you put the tracks on it for winter recovery and put the tires back on it for summer driving around. Choices are not my strong point. LOL
I would personally keep the Old Willie jeep exactly the way it is and keep the Dodge pickup the way it is and enjoy both of them❤❤❤ I love the Willys Jeep wagon❤❤❤❤
Keep it as is it's looking great
I would keep it as is. However I would love to see what it looks like with the tracks. If it’s not too hard put the tracks on and post some pics.
Keep the Willy's as it is.
A man after my own heart. Keep it as is. Call Matt or Colt for a Dana 30 or Rudy
That is a amazing find. You test drove across the country with no issues. It proved it is in amazing shape for it's age, I would leave it as is. If it ain't broke, don't mess with it. How many track vehicles do you need? You already have one. Be happy and find a way to be a blessing to others. great video.
My neighbor across the street is from North Platte and his dad used to work for UP in that rail yard!
It’s too cool to tear up
Cool ass rig! I can relate. I have 95 yj crawler
Leave it as is. Classic jeeps are rare and hard to find and that is one of nicest I've seen in a long time. You just happened to stop at my neighborhood Harbor Freight. I sure wish I would've happened to be there that day. I would have loved to see you. I'm surprised I hadn't seen that jeep around town. Love your channel.
X is an unknown quantity and a spurt is a drip under pressure = expert now you know Casey Staying a a holiday inn priceless cool ride brother
That WAS an awesome adventure! Thanks for taking us along! It would be cool to see the faces of the people you rescue this winter when you roll up in that ol Willey's with tracks on it.
I stayed at a Holiday Inn a couple of times. Thanks for making me feel like an expert Casey. 🙏
Leave it the way it is!
I've always liked the older Willys jeep style and reliability I had a 48 willys and it served me flawlessly for over 3 decades (and I was the second owner)with only regular upkeep and out performed many "built" 4X4 trucks and other SUVS even some custom built rigs. So my recommendation is keep it as it is!!
Thank you for your content!! Happy trails!
The dodge truck is set up perfect, leave the wheels and tires on the Willys and drive it. Your fleet of old iron sure makes fun videos!
I live for that sxxt Casey! Love your content !
keep it as is, glad you had a great trip.
Ya ya did! Awesome @CaseyLaDelle! Can’t wait till you come visit Bruce and I. Maybe bring that Jeep!
That is a sweet Willies. It's a keeper as far as I am concerned.
I’m a curmudgeon. It is not now, nor was it ever a Willie’s. It’s Willys (pronounced Willis)
That’s a really neat unit, great video man safe travels! Couldn’t believe how cheap fuel was over there compared to here! Just outside of Redding, CA
You have a legit overlander!
My belief on the old iron rides like that is whatever gets the most riding miles. Its all about smiles per mile. Had a 53 Willis Overland and loved it. New vehicles have nowhere near the cool points. Love the videos
Wow, 90% + of all of the comments are overwhelmingly in favor of Casey just keeping the ol' 1949 Jeep just like it is, save for putting on the hydro-steer setup on the front end. Most people know, understand and get it...the ol' rig is a nice piece of iconic, nostalgic, classic, Americana motoring history...it's frickin' GREAT!
I vote for keep it perfect as is - throw in the gear to make it a wheeled recovery vehicle -- beef up what's needed with suspension/steering & give the ole gal a chance to shine as a unique recovery vehicle.
Keep it as is Casey
What a great trip. Love the Willy's the way it is. My wife and I try to always take the back roads.
Keep it as it is.
I love the collection of old school cool you’ve got going haha
Keep the Wagoneer as it is. It is just too cool as it is. Don´t change it. NO tracks!!!!
Keep as it but use the trax . They are removable and are “winter tires” lol .
I would protect the wood that’s on there . Also for the paint there is a great paint protection it’s called poppy’s patina and you can wipe it on the surface yourself. Keep that thing from rotting !
Nice buy ! Love it I would even want it from you! Thanks for the ride along I miss that stretch of the US ( dove it a lot).
There's no wood on this body
Oh that looked real! Apologies! lol I am watching on a cellphone and that don’t help. lol well love the way it looks!
Keep it as is. It would be a crime to mess with it
Agreed
Fix your wipers and keep it as it is nice looking ride
Casey
NO..don't change anything. Rare and driveable...
The only thing rare about the Willys is the body. The rest has been replaced. (OK, maybe the frame is still original, too.)
I would leave it as is. Other than replacing that wiper system...as a northener as well, I understand the value of a robust wiper.
don't change that 49 jeep it's the same age as me i just love it the way it is.
Nice Willys Wagon, good modern swap with practical upgrades, & nothing stupid crazy, That unit is a keeper as is & obvious reliable daily driver, the 1st & original SUV ever produced, Back in the day 50_-+ years ago i was a Willys Zombie couldn't get enough of them, Had Wagons, Trucks & a couple Jeepsters. 14 Willys in all. though never had a Willys FC or car. Most had small block chevy 283 V8 or inline six transplants, A '54 Wagon was my Daily driver for years, had a stock 2Six5/ 283 that was swapped out in 1959, Had well over 500k documented miles on that swap when i sold it 25 years later. I bought it from a Government geologist who drove it down south to Patagonia SA on a 4 year journey for his survey job throughout the Andes Range and back through every through country in South & Central America. He put 200k++ on the V8 Willys & i put an additional 300k over a couple decades with no major work aside from regular maintenance and a valve job. the shear pin on the rear axel was the only weak link i ever encountered with it. And that Willys Wagon is the only vehicle besides a VW powered Isetta that i wish i had kept & never sold..
I had a 57 Willys wagon in the early 70s that I dropped a 283 Chevy in, had the leaf springs re-arched and moved them on top of the axles. It had a Ramsey PTO winch and I added a Warn overdrive and was off to the races. I drove it all over the Southwest and down into Mexico a few times and she never let me down. Sold it when I was stationed overseas and have kicked myself ever since. Bought a 72 Toyota FJ40 when I got back and dropped a 327 Chevy in it and that eased the pain a bit.
Keep it Like it is!!
Wonderful trip. I still own the rusty shell of the very last '64 with delivery doors instead of a tailgate that was ever made here in the US. According to plaque on the dash it was built on Dec 7th, 1963. The previous owner had outfitted it with frame mounts for a small block Chevy 350. I added the 4-speed and overdrive unit to the 4x4 transfer-case. Just loved that rig and my '59 with the 327 a close 2nd(up for trade with the '59)
Casey I had a 1950 Willy's ambulance. I loved that old Jeep, I wouldn't change a thing on that, except like you said upgrading the steering. Great find and Willy's wipers were always a problem, I think they have conversation units for them now. They were so flimsy back in the day, but then again they weren't going 70 MPH back then.😊
Love it and what an adventure! I am envious.
Thank you for buying so many weird projects, it mkes me feel less bad for having two at the same time
Keep it as is, however upgrade the steering and enjoy driving it! Love the channel
Good Trip video. KEEP IT AS IS.... and enjoy the old rock and roller of 75 years
