Best Vanlife Shower

- Is this the best shower design for vanlife?
When I started designing my campervan conversion, I knew that I wanted to have an indoor shower so I could wash off after a day of hiking, mountain biking, or skiing, but I hated the idea of losing all of that space to put a shower inside the van!
So this is what I came up with and it’s been working out great!
When it’s closed up it looks like any old cabinet, but when you open those doors you see that it’s not just a closet, its actually a full wet bath!
By attaching storage containers to the backside of the doors, I’m able to have enough storage space on there for a full pantry!
Then on the other door I’m able to have a hanging wardrobe for all my clothes, a spot to put my dirty clothes hamper, and a full body mirror so I can see how I look before going out!
Then when I want to shower, I just turn on the shower light, step inside, and close my nautilus shower door so no water gets inside the van!
This also means I had room for a toilet in the van too!
I’ve been loving this vanlife shower design and think its the best compromise for not losing storage space but still having an indoor shower.
What do you think???

I would not have food and pantry items in a shower for pink mold to contaminate it
It's been a year now and no mold found, so no problems yet
Epic fail comment
@@joeythenomad yikes I hope you know what it looks like. It's not black
@@fifi.871 Right then it'd be black mold and not pink mold 😜
@@joeythenomad I am just wondering what you do with all the things on the door when you want to take a shower?
So after you poop all of your cooking condiments are just there chilling in the bathroom with the smell and germs. That is disgusting.
It’s a compost toilet 🤷🏻♀️
The toilet holds everything in and is always closed so its not like a normal house toilet and i only flush it with the lid closed so there's no splatter. i've also never pooped in it, there's plenty of public toilets for that
I agree too many van lifers have the toilet as an afterthought. Sorry but I don't care what kind of toilet it is, or where I poop - I don't want it in the same area as my shower or my food.
@@brandyboo your toothbrush has doo doo on it.
@@brandyboo you don't want your toilet where your shower is? Is your shower not in your bathroom?
The asian in me cannot fathom putting food where you shower or take a dump. 😩 i am sorry, just being “meticulous” how to not get unwanted bacteria into my food.
The toilet is sealed so nothing escapes and there's a sliding door so when one is in use it's isolated from the other so there's no cross contamination
Meh poop and try to figure the seasoning out
I was thinking the same food in ur bath room haha.😂🤢🤮
He probably doesn’t have much company come over to eat.
I guess no one’s heard of “you don’t eat where you 💩 “ saying! 😂😂
Thats why i don't 💩 in the van 😜
Me: *sees food in the bathroom* that does not compute in my mind for some reason.....
They're isolated from each other so its fine
I doubt this shower is ever used.
I live in an RV, and the one thing we never do, is store things inside of our shower. If we do, I know that will deter us from using our shower as often as we do. No one wants to declutter something, just to shower, and then also have to put it all back.
If I lived in a van, I would definitely make the shower/bathroom a main focus of my build
I actually use the shower all the time. Since my storage is built into the shower doors I don't actually have to take things in and out of the shower to use it, moving the storage is as simple as opening a door!
@@joeythenomad Oh well that's good to hear. I take back what I said then. Almost all van dwellers mention that they don't use their shower. It's reassuring to hear from someone that does
@F F All the storage opens up with the doors and then the toilet comes out to give me more space when showering. There's also a sliding nautilus door that comes out that I forgot to post in this video so I'll make an update
@@joeythenomad u78
Why is my Seasonings always clumped up???
Yes. Yes it is. 👏 Definitely taking Inspo from this for a future build.
This is certainly creative.
I don’t know much about building, but I wouldn’t put spices on the inside of the shower/bathroom door. I would have tried to find an option that allowed me to keep the spices on the outside, but not bulky. Idk if thin/small recessed shelves on the outside door would’ve been possible or feasible, but maybe something along those lines. Something that could theoretically rest “inside” the door but still on the front, facing the kitchen. Also, I would find another spot for those hanging clothes (seems like mildew or yucky smells could be a problem if they stay there).
All great ideas I like where you're thinking! I liked the look of not having my spices out side and I've been living in the van for a year and no mold yet so not really an issue
That's a lot of moisture in a pantry. Hope it doesn't cause any issues
I've been living in the van like this for a year now and no issues so far!
@@joeythenomad good deal.
I wouldn't put food where I shower or use the restroom. But , if it was just a shower and potty, its great!!!!!!😎💜🎼
This is exactly what I had in mind for when I build my van. Finally someone put it to life first. Love it 🥰
Happy to be the guinea pig lol
Clever design!! This is an excellent multipurpose spaces for a functional van build 😄
Thank you! I was stoked to have a full shower inside but not waste that space
Best shower ever 🔥 🔥 🔥
Thanks!
OK yes at first I looked at it and was like oh my God this sucks because you have to remove all that stuff off the doors before you take a shower … lol 😂
And then I realized you could just put a curtain there and then open the doors up and then that stuff doesn’t get wet!!
Yes yes this is a beautiful bathroom storage cabinet/shower
Great idea that I’ll be borrowing…minus the food items.
This is so clever, and such a great use of space! 👏👏
Thank you!
Not sure why all the Hate in this comment section. Excellent design my man, I think I might implement something similar in my van as currently my wetbath also has a ton of wasted space. I never liked the idea of having to "unpack" your washroom to use it but having everything mounted to the doors is Genius. And then having the Nautilus door inside as the actual shower curtain is so smart. Amazing design
Thanks I appreciate it! People are free to think what they want, I just know it works for me and the way I designed it is totally sanitary and functional
Y'all are really just commenting without using your damn eyes🤣
There's a rolling door on the inside of the swinging doors.
The food doesn't ever have to be in the same area as a used toilet or damp shower. Calm down.
Kara and Nate have one of the best showers I've seen
BRILLIANT!! YOU ARE A GENIUS
Thank you!
I always felt the shower/bathroom should be multi utilized. They are hardly used and it's prime real-estate. Most van lifers rarely use the shower and with proper ventilation you can store anything in there.
When I do my sprinter van I'm planning an outside shower with a platform right off the back or side.
That is awesome! I would want one of these if I lived in a van!
I know it works for you. But i wouldn't have food in my toilet/bathroom area. That's just personal preference
Totally understand, I'm comfortable with how i designed it and separated the food from the bathroom but everyone's different
That's how I did my wet bath, it's fantastic.
pineapple vintage cologne! apparently hes a fragrance fanatic like I am!!!
Imagine having someone over and accidentally forget it and close them in lol
hey they should've spoken up lol
Pretty sweet, man! I think you could improve it by building a box to house the clothes and putting the mirror on the box door so you could use it without removing all of the clothes
Definitely could do something like that, just gotta be careful of weight with adding more to the door with how much the van moves and shakes. But I like the idea!
YES!
I don't agree with the pantry portion but I think the shower thing is pretty cool
I saw one in Germany that folded out from the wall. It was genius and save the guy loads of space
A bathroom with all my pantry items in a van... YoU WiLl oWn nOtHiNg aNd Be HaPpY.
I could not have a pantry near a toilet
The toilet is sealed and its mostly just spices and other stuff in containers in that pantry. Also the way i designed it they're never in use at the same so there's no cross contamination
Wow this is actually really genius, nice work!🤙
Thank you!
Like the storage on the doors. Boss video!
Great use of space
Thank you!
This is a great idea. Might have to borrow this for my shower.
Amazing how you came up with this solution, you should get a job in the UN they could do with a fixer like you
As long as they let me work from the van I'm good with that lol
I think that's great too. The best. Then you can put up a nylon shower curtain to keep the water in when you use it for a shower. You can buy nylon fabric at the fabric store to have a custom size, Another advantage to buy your own fabric is that you can choose a pleasant color.
There is a sliding door for the shower to close when showering
Damn people took this shower personally lol
💕This is a great idea! Except you have to allow the shower to fully dry before closing it up with those food items..
I'm totally stealing this idea when I build my rig😉.. but for non-food items.
I just give it a quick wipe down and then close it up without waiting, hasn't been an issue in the past year
The peanut butter beside the toilet 👁👄👁
Hang a shower curtain to keep the water in too. Brilliant shower/storage use.
I actually have a nautilus sliding shower door that comes out once ths closet doors are open! I just forgot to show it in this video
Having a proper bathroom should be more important than kitchen space as most people doing van life, eat out.
Well, not necessarily. I value my kitchen space a great deal. I eat out maybe once a month.
I cook way more than I eat out
How did you replenish your fresh water reservoir in San Francisco? Mayority of people here they denied to help you get water.
I only needed to fill up my tank once in SF, but I don't remember it being an issue. Maybe cause I filled it outside of the actual city?
Makes douching so convenient
I'd want to add a shower curtain just so nothing gets wet though.
Love it
I like the idea but wouldn't want food in there. I'd probably use it as general storage for other things that I wouldn't mind getting damp. And I would want a curtain or some other protective layer between the shower and all of that storage. Good idea though, especially with the full length mirror
Very clever idea
Absolutely genius 🥰
Awesome design
i lovee the ideaaaa so muuch! thankyou for sharing 🥳🥳
Glad you like it!
It’s a great idea, but bro never mentions anywhere that there is an additional door?
Ya totally spaced on showing that part, that's my bad! I'll make an update
Great build!!!
The best!
The best van life shower was the "hidden" shower that went behind a shelf
Hey!
I like your Salsa Lizano 😃
Pura vida!!!!
It's so good!!
Genius
Super convenient ❤
How does the stuff not all get wet tho?
He keeps the doors open and it’s a handheld sprayer
The doors stay open with all of the stuff attached to them while i'm showering, then there's also a sliding door that slides out from the side so no water gets to the inside of the van
@@joeythenomad ahh ok thank you! So cool.
He has a sliding, self-cleaning door that slides shut so the clothes and food don’t get wet. It was on another short. I think it’s very clever!!
@@Robin-gf7bd Thanks for covering for my mistake not showing it in this short 🙃
Can nobody else see that he has one of those pocket sliding doors that get squeegeed off when you pull it shut? 😅 The doors stay open and he pulls the pocket door to shower. Mostly likely leaves it open while it all dries or has a ceiling fan and shuts the doors after.
Brilliant
Great use of space!
Thanks!
I’m not sure it the best van shower, because of the valuable space it takes up in the center of your vehicle. Now Ame in a van dad shower build is quiet innovative, but it’s also not easily replicated.
Good for you
Wow that's funny I'm planning the exact same thing
Great minds think alike!
@@joeythenomad yea I have alot of ideas I'm a highschool drop out and don't have alot of money but a box truck seems really interesting in concept to me so I'm looking into doing a box truck I found one for about 500 bucks a 20ft and hopefully I can implement all my ideas into it
I feel like people complaining about the proximity of the toilet to food cannot be actual van lifers. It's 50 sq ft after all 😄 i like the build idea, though I'm leaning toward rear bathroom it would still work
Lol exactly! Rear bathroom is a great design, I just needed room for my bikes lol
That had my heart racing. I’m claustrophobic…
Maybe not the design for you then...
👌 oh that’s mint!
I think there is a slide door on the corner of the bath so while he shower his clothes are safe
exactly!
I kinda hate it but it does seem a lot more practical tbh.
Genius.
Thanks!
Smart u added the shower but use the space brilliant but u don’t have to lug it all away to get a shower just open it
All the storage is attached to the backs of those closet doors so taking the storage out of the shower is as easy as opening a door
It's really nice looking
Thank you!
I freaking love the idea, but how do you address (potential) damp in your pantry after a shower? Just a full towel-down of the shower space before closing doors?
Ya I just give the walls a quick wipe down and then they're fine, nothing gets wet once I close it up
My dream is to live in a van
Make it happen! You can do it!
@@joeythenomad thank you me and my cousin want to do it
Yay steamed spices
Love this
Thanks!
Great thinking.
Thanks!
Nope, but I feel like van life is full of give and takes. To me is a matter of personal preference, like I for example would do the shower "bag" deal instead of "sacrificing" space.
Van life is absolutely a matter of personal preference and what works for you. Shower bag is definitely another good way to go, I just can't stand the shower curtain sticking to me and waiting for the curtain to dry so i thought this was a good compromise
,NICE....
Similar design to mine. I also put the cooktop in the bathroom so the bathroom is really also a kitchen
Wow great use of space 😜
So you sit on the toilet while you’re doing the stirfry? I’m not sure but I think that’s a health department code violation. You might want to check your restaurant food handlers handbook on that particular subject.
@@HunterMann I cook food for myself and I can cook it however the hell I want. The health department and its handbooks can suck on these nuts.
It could sorta work if the shower had a curtain & the food condiments door was kept open while showering & using the toilet maybe.. I really don't understand putting the spice tins in the bathroom when the should be somewhere near the kitchen sink or kitchen area like I just don't get it, while someone is showering the spices & some oils,/ condiments are in the bathroom area?
The shower has a plastic sliding door that comes out and separates it from the main area when in use, so the condiments and shower/toilet are never in use at the same time and always separated when in use. Also when that door is open the condiments are in my kitchen area. I can reach them from the sink when the doors open
A pantry inside the shower? the humidity will spoil your spices.
Well I've been living in it for a year now and they're still spicy 😎
It’s awesome if you lived alone but not so much with another person
Good thing I live alone then 😜
I think it's a great idea. Just stay on top of keeping things sanitized and apparently you are.
Yup the toilet is sealed and stuff is isolated from each other when in use so there's no cross contamination
If you can make those waterproof so it wont get wet and contaminated, then it will be 2 thumbs up design
But can we see how well it functions? Serious question I’ve been looking into van life and I’m currently looking for the best van shower so functionality is very important to me
Functions like how? like water running or slide my sliding door closed?
Amazing
Thanks!
You will definitely need a ventilation fan in the shower see that you are using it for storage that will be affected by moisture. I'm worried for you because mold could take over and hurt you.
Wow
As a microbiology student, that's no for me.
I would've opted for more drawers above the bed before that... no offense
How do you shower???
Doors open?
I dont get it
Clothes and food over the toilet? No.
They're not used at the same time
Do you still like having a fixed shower? I’m leaning towards fixed just a little nervous to give up the space. But I take 2 showers a day most days at home since I’m pretty active so it seems necessary lol. Also-how is the water pressure?
I'm still glad I went with the fixed shower (especially with the attached storage). I honestly usually shower at the gym after working out, but I'm super glad I have the shower for after skiing or when I'm camping somewhere without a gym shower. Water pressure in my van is good at around 1.5GPM, though if you take 2 showers a day that'll go through your water tank pretty quick if you're not doing military style quick showers
I know you have a sliding door for when the shower is in use but when you're done are you still leaving the whole thing open until everything inside is dry before closing?
Usually i just give it a quick wipe down with a spare rag and then its good to go
Everything will get wet!!!
I forgot to show my sliding plastic door that comes out and keeps everything dry
Ingenious use of space. Best build with bathroom/shower I have seen.
