This is a very nice and detailed tutorial with lots of helpful information. I would recommend zooming in on the UI elements like the config wizard or settings windows, because they are a bit hard to see without going fullscreen or almost illegible on smaller screens. Especially since you recorded in such high resolution, so the text ends up a bit smaller then on a 1080 screen, and the zoom shouldn't make it lose any quality. Just something to keep in mind if you do more of these types of videos.
Very detailed video and useful. Just a suggestion, if you would have zoomed in on the screen for the settings menu, near the cursor, it would be so much better bcz your screen is huge and the text were really tiny.
Kevin: Instead, what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna walkthrough what the different settings mean, so depending on your machine, if you're on a high-end machine or low-end machine, you can make the choices what setting works the best in your scenario... so your video looks fantastic. Me; *Fantastic.*
Per OBS: "Well, the OBS team recommends recording to FLV or MKV. Both of these formats are popular “container” formats, which mean they can “contain” many different types of video or audio. Neither FLV nor MKV require a process to finish the file like MP4 does, so even if your power cuts out or you get a blue screen of death, your entire recording is safe. As for which is better, there’s very little difference between the two formats, but only MKV supports multiple audio tracks. If that’s a feature you need, please use MKV, otherwise, FLV is fine."
This is very helpful! I was using VLC to convert .mkv to mp4. Never tinkered with that Remux Recording. Thanks also discussing the difference between .flv and .mp4.
Just tested the LA ICQ recommendation with QuickSync and it stutters like crazy even when set to a low quality. So the lesson I learned from this: Don't trust any of the OBS settings guides, just do your own testing to find out what works best.
I use Software (x264 low CPU usage preset, increases file size) works best for my recording. When I use Hardware (NVENC), the final rendered clip is laggy.
Thanks. this helped. I thought I was gonna end up like many others that couldn't solve this problem unless they basically had a newer laptop/ computer.
Well. I am currently wrestling with OBS so this is GREAT, and thanks very much. So clear and I like the way you break it down into simple and advanced. Incidentally, and unsurprisingly, your vid looks good as well. Can I ask what sort of lighting you are using for that? Great work. PMD.
Hi Kevin. Can you zoom in on what you're talking about so we can see it? I couldn't see what you were pointing at because it was too small and out of focused. Thanks
Hi! Very nice video! I would like to record raw pcm or lossless audio from my computer. My graphic card is a MSI R5450, which settings would you recommend me? Thanks :)
Main concern: What are the settings we need to tweak using OBS recording when OBS is making the files too large? Meanwhile keeping quality as high as possible. For instance: OBS recording a 2 hour movie at 1080p/ 60fps while staying under 2gb? Is this possible? ----- Concern details: I really need a tutorial for recording (VHS or DVD's, games, screenshot, whatever) using a capture card but with OBS recording. Especially the quality settings vs file size settings. I have been using an old VCR to digitize my family's homevideo VHS tapes plugged into an Elgato HD60 S+ and then converting them digitally using OBS recording as a VHS converter, but it's making the files sizes up in the 7GB to 12GB range for a 1 to 3 hour video!!! Most digital movies I have bought are only 600mb to 2gb for a 90 to 120min movie with menu subtitles etc. Even the store purchased digital copy of Avengers Endgame was 3 hours long but is only 5.6GB. So what the heck is going on with OBS recorsing a VHS tape at over 10gb for a 1 to 3 hour movie?! The special effects and audio is insane in Endgame... I'm just recording kids playing in the yard, people skiing behind a boat and family reunions...😒 Can anyone help me find a video for understanding the quality vs file size for OBS recording? Also software for compressing already recorded OBS files like .mkv, .mp4 or .flv without diminishing quality would be awesome to so I don't have to re-record them again. That would be really awesome!!!
The Settings text is so small and blurry in your video it is hard to see. Can you zoom in on those areas when recording? or maybe simply reduce your desktop size, therefore showing bigger text for this kind of videos?
I need some extra help please. You really helped me out in terms of fixing a problem but now I'm faced with another. I have for about 2 or so days now been trying to set up OBS for the first time for video recording but every time I do, whatever I record comes out looking terribly ugly, pixelated and washed out. It's even hard to explain without showing it. Which completely baffled me because I have an expensive, high end gaming laptop that is this year's model, have only had it for about a month and it should be able to handle most things with ease. I have never had a problem with it so I doubt that the laptop is the issue, but for some reason after recording my videos, when I watched them back they were almost unusable. I've watched countless videos on how to get better quality on OBS and none of them have helped me, until I found yours. Watching your video and following along, I was able to conclude that my problem has been recording in mp4, I tested recording in flv as you advised and the video came out looking beautiful, exactly as my screen looks with vivid colours, sharp and not pixelated at all. I don't even understand why mp4 does that but at least now I know what exactly was causing the problem. I was so happy and relieved, immediately I thought "See?! I'm not crazy!! I knew something was off!!" So that's sorted but now my next problem is: editing softwares won't support flv or mkv type files, and the first solution that comes to mind is exactly what you said: remuxing the file. But that's where my problem lies. Even though this should be a lossless process, remuxing it into mp4 is making it look like how it did when I recorded in mp4 again, back to the same terrible-looking quality. I have looked everywhere online and I can't find anything about this anywhere, only forums, blog posts and videos of people saying that it's a lossless process and that quality is kept the same. That's definitely not my case. Apologies for the paragraph, I'm really desperate and frustrated here because I can't seem to figure out how to fix it and I've been at this for two whole days, if not more. I really want to start a channel and I could have by this time if this wasn't such a stumbling block. Any idea on what I could do? 🙏🏽 TL;DR: Remuxing from flv to mp4 is making my files lose a lot of quality, despite me following this entire tutorial and seeing everywhere that this is supposedly a lossless process.
Kevin, thanks to you I now use OBS. But I now need to know how to edit the created video. I do this for home projects as well as recording videos such as yours. As an example, I have two dogs who like to bark at the mailman. So, I find myself with a self made video with barking dogs in it. How do I edit the video and snip out the 30 seconds of barking? Thanks! Robert
Kevin, at 3:51 you recommend FLV. We have reached 2021 and Adobe is no longer supporting the Flash Player. In fact, Adobe announced the end of support for Flash Player in 2017. Is OBS behind the curve? Or am I also missing some critical bit of information here?
What software do you recommend if you would like to create an MP3 file from the audio? Or, can OBS create a separate MP3 file in addition to the flv file?
Hi Kevin. Continued thanks for all the help you are sharing with the world. Can you do a video on the problem of audio/video non-synchronisation? I have experienced audio lag a number of times with OBS. All the best.
Please sir, would u mind do a video of how to arrange different scene and how navigate and record like a Pro, at least how to set up to 5 scene and how we can record and change different scenes to make our recording very unique, perfect and professional 🙏🏻
CRF not CFR. People could confuse it with CBR. My personal opinion is that OBS is a poor choice for recording. Maybe streaming. It seems to take too many steps to find the camera, give full screen preview etc. Plus look at the quality of the display of the settings in this video. One cannot even read them; at least I cannot. It is free though. My version, freshly downloaded March 2022 does not show many of the settings you discussed > system dependent perhaps?
Thanks for the upload and share. I've been using OBS to mostly record then upload via you-tube/face-book and having not really played with the setting in, OBS that much. I notice the video quality isn't great via playback on the source file (not uploaded or converted). The file size is for 45 min recording is 1.93GB, at 1920x1080. I left most for setting, for streaming set up (MKV - X264 - CBR- 6000 kpbs) I'm currently using a full AMD set up 3950X - 5700XT - 64GB system ram - Nvme 2TB boot / Nvme 2TB games / 8TB Seagate Exos 7E8 for internal recording & storage. A few questions: I'm not using NVENC, (due to the 5700XT) which are the best setting X264 with any changes that mite suit my current setup? After uploading most site convert the file, so should I be recording higher quality or not? After recording will changing from FLV, to mp4 etc, via remux make uploading any faster or just better for editing software, in DaVinci Resolve etc.
For recording with X264, use CRF - constant rate factor as this ensures constant quality. Set it to 23, which is the default. Always record in the best quality as RUclips/Facebook/Twitter will apply some compression when you upload the video. The original source content is always the best quality. FLV to mp4 via remux has no impact on the quality. You'll want it in mp4 so you can edit easily. Hope that helps and good luck!
@Kevin Stratvert The video/tutorial is great but... none of the settings help me with the problem I have. What can one do to avoid having the black bars on both sides of the video without stretching the scene?
