PG's Perry Bean hung with Blake Ibanez, Chris Whetzel (above left), and Nick Trip of the upstart Texas thrash-metallers during the Nashville stop on the end of their tour promoting the group’s latest album, Nightmare Logic.
Blake Ibanez tours with a Jackson RR1 and a Jackson RRMG Pro, both loaded with Lace Drop & Gain pickups. Both guitars are strung with Ernie Ball Super Slinky (.009-.042) gauge strings.
Chris Whetzel tours with two Dunable R2 basses. Both feature Lace Aluma-P pickups and are strung with Ernie Ball Regular Slinky (.050-.105) strings.

Blake Ibanez - plays Jackson
Taylor Swift gets it. She plays Taylor acoustics.
I believe that is the point why these players will not play a guitar that has their last name. Caused it would be called typical and people would make fun of it.
Phillip Tomlin or people just play whatever they wanna play regardless of gimmicks
@@pt8175 Right who would want to subject themselves to playing a Gibson when you could go Yamaha?
Two Ibanez pedals at least lol
So these guys play old school thrash in standard tuning with 9-42 strings? This is what rebellion looks like. Awesome
Dimebag did the same \m/
@@Viney209 No he didn’t 😂
@@MrBones-lw2bf Yes he did... I can't be stuffed looking for the timestamp in this video, but he say's 9 42 in this clinic video.
ruclips.net/video/C2kuuzG6mvU/видео.html
@@Viney209 he didn’t use them exclusively later in his career. And he didn’t play old school thrash or use standard tuning
@@MrBones-lw2bf That still doesn't mean he didn't use them... you just said it...
And I agree he didn't play old school thrash or standard tuning... he played Pantera...
Pantera is one of my top bands mate.
Power Trip is the only show I've been where not only trash cans were thrown, but actual people. It was great.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I got hit in the head with 50-gallon trash can and loved it.
I’m gonna miss those shows at the door this band was epic
ries like yours warm my heart❤
Stories
I'll watch any and every rig rundown. I find it all so fascinating and educational. And I have found many new bands from these videos. Like these guys. Never heard of them. I listened to their stuff (not much out there) all day today. Took me back to my youth in 80's.
I love the variety of the artists in these videos. Its cool when an artist is a gear head and knows every answer to every question. And its cool when musicians have no clue - "I don't know, I just like this or that". I think its important for aspiring players to understand it can be either way or in the middle.
Well said, Greg! And thanks!!
RIP Riley Gale. Legend.
It hurt so much seeing this today. We've lost one of the best artists of this generation. RIP
thebestever475 no
so whack dude, I had this pinned for a show sometime
thebestever475 nope 👎
@thebestever475 MAGA2020 bitch.
Props to these guys for using standard tuning. Rare these days in heavy music. Keep it old school!
It's genuinely sad that E _standard_ is rare nowadays. Every idiot and their mother thinks downtuning is cool. I'd personally never subject any of my guitars to it.
Yep, Power Trip is one of the very few mainstream modern metal bands I enjoy, alot is their creativity & originality I know but you also need to have a pleasing sound, the tones are beautiful & downtuning just sounds bad to me.
There isn’t anything primarily bad with down tuning. Sure, keeping it old school is great but don’t downplay the rest of the players out here experimenting!
I would assume that they downtune to accommodate the vocalist’s key yenno. The top string being the key for a song makes it easy to get some riffage going.
Dillinger Escape Plan also did some incredible stuff in e standard.
Normally we see a half-dozen signature guitars and a mountain of rack-mounted shit......dude here is like "yeah I got this on craigslist........" its actually kinda cool to see.
Yeah because they aren't a million dollar band 🤣
Rick Beato did a good video about string gauge. People think that the heavier the better the tone but that's not necessarily true. I use 10's for my guitar that's tuned to D standard and 9's for the E standard tuning. I've heard this band on Liquid Metal and they kick ass.
I like how these guys are a cohesive unit as far as gear is concerned.
Blake, please do us all a favor, go with a sig model, I want an Ibanez Ibanez....
How bout a Jabanez
Hunter Sagers ibanez is shit
@@dylanvogel4503 taking 2 years for that? Go sit your butterscotch vintage reissue 50's custom shop tele ass down and play some blues chords.
Hunter Sagers I don't like telecasters I prefer Jackson I like the way they feel love the sounds from them ibanez sounds to muddy to me no mater what pickup and I hate the way the necks are tube screamers are kick ass tho no need to get upset
Dylan Vogel Guys, guys calm down. Can’t we all just hate Gibson together?
WTF is going on at 21:05?? Is that scripted? Holy gosh ahahahahaha
LMAO I don't know how I missed that
Dudes just being dudes...
Premier Guitar That doesn't explain why they act like they just found the elixir of eternal youth or the Krabby Patty secret formula or something
thats so scripted...but actually...its goooooooood man
Premier Guitar Bros gunna bro 👍🙏👊😁👌
Rob Barett from Cannibal Corpse goofin' in the back and offering Nick some tea has to be one of the funniest, coolest and most random things I've ever seen in these videos lmao
Good eye, Rob seems like a cool guy for sure hell of a guitar player as well
say lean and mean one more time
It is amazing to see and hear the pure lack of ego here, very refreshing. You would never know the absolute carnage of POWER TRIP just by listening to these guys being interviewed.
R.I.P. Riley Gale
More of these where we actually HEAR their tones.
Thanks to Premier Guitar and the Rig Rundown series I now have a new band to listen to. Good job.
I like how the comments here about Blake Ibanez playing a Jackson despite his name XD. I like to come back this video alot cuz its nice to see how metal musicians keep their rig super simple.
Rest in Power Riley
I like this host guy, he seems like a nice dude
I'm genuinely so mad that I didn't get into Power Trip sooner. Genuinely one of the best and most badass modern metal bands. Just straight up thrash metal from the 80s. Riley Gale was and is an incredible front man.
super late reply here but Power Trip and Creeping Death actually formed a band called Fugitive earlier this year, they have an EP out now called Maniac
25:31 James Fatfield in the back
OOOOOoohhwuh chi-hips
That’s cowboy from Gatecreeper lmao
Is it me, or does Blake looks, sounds, and somewhat acts like Chuck schuldiner
A good drinking game would be taking a shot every time they say "lean and mean" in this video
when introducing Nick he says "mean and lean", caught me off guard.
John Bollen or "like"... ;)
I see what you lean and mean
and here I thought, "lean and mean" meant "like" just plugging into the head... silly me. =)
You can add to that drinking game by doing a shot every time he either says uh or the phrase or whatever
I've seen Power Trip 3 times and they are great live. I think E tuning sounds great live and is a lot punch-ier
I find the E tuning interesting myself (for the genre). Picking things up out of their playing. This was a really cool video. I have the ENGL amp in some pc amps sims. Took a snap shot of the settings. Going to try them out in a bit. :)
I wish I could have :(((
Their riffs is what's heavy and punchy, doesn't matter what tuning it's in. So many bands in the past have made standard tuning sound monstrous - Sepultura's Beneath The Remains comes to mind out of many. I love the classic feel of standard tuning.
Standard e tuning is the way my friends, dial in a good tone and bust out some meaty riffs and you’ll sound heavier than someone tuning down
@@cd0u50c9 I love E standard, I still think the best ever in E is Overkill, The Years Of Decay 1989. it's really all about the amp settings really. pre-gain 7 low 9 mid .5 high 8 post-gain 10 \m/
I like how simple all their rigs are. It’s kinda pure
Totally agree on the tuning part - the standard E tuning gives it a certain punch, that you really can't get with a tuned down guitar, and I really miss that punch in todays thrashier music. :)
G12T-75's are in the JCM900 Cab.
I thought so, but mine came with G12K-85's. I thought that was strange.
Yeah thats a strange one my 900 cab has 75s
That's my old Jackson RR1, no joke
For real??
Damn I bet you regret selling that Jackson now lmao
holy shit. imagine playing a guitar that would eventually be played to record one of the greatest thrash/hardcore records of all time
@@3badthebad why would you regret it? He can always get another guitar if he wants. I think it’s pretty cool that his old guitar is used by one of the guys in power trip and I’m sure he probably feels the same way
21:05 wtf lol
LMFAO, random af
E standard is like banjo tuning nowadays
Lol
These guys have made the simplest setups and standard tuning sound monstrous. It's all in the skill and the chops, and they've got them in bucketloads. Awesome.
Code Orange or Full of Hell would be a great rig rundown.
Full of Hell
rig rundown
ruclips.net/video/aQ1BmlaGpLU/видео.html
I'm confused. Blake Ibanez... playing Jackson...
Matt Nunes first thing that came to my head lol
AHAHAHAHHA YEAPPPP!!
i wanna be confuse too with u AHAHAHAHA
"mean and lean"
Hell yes! And I see Cannibal Corpse's gear behind them, so I really hope you did a rig rundown with them as well.
PG said on the preview of this rundown that CC declined. Hopefully Gatecreeper were down. :(
The Phantomnaut damn. They've gotten Alex a few times now, but it would be cool to see Rob and Pat.
Yep, like The Phantomnaut said, CC declined our request.
Premier Guitar DRAT! Well if anything, I checked out 3 Power Trip albums after watching this, so thank you!
Premier Guitar
Damn that's heart breaking
I fuckin appreciate how simple their rigs are. That's a philosophy I've always had. Make your guitar and amp sound the best they can and then add a couple of boosts as needed. A tube screamer and a delay are all you need even with clean parts.
Does the interviewer pick his clothes accordingly to the bands that are presented? Here looks like an old schooler thrash fan and in other interviews he's like the hipster he wants to beat to death.
The more I learn about this band the more i understand why they're my favorite band ever
21:09 in the back was so random
I was waiting for someone to point that out lmao
lol
That’s the guitarist of gatecreeper sans shirt.
The guy with the beard and sun glasses is Rob Barrett from Cannibal Corpse.
performance art
Finally a guitar player I understand :)
Holy shit!!! Demetri Martin joined a thrash band
This was a really good rig video...Lots of good information...and cool dudes...
Best thing is he talks about e flat tuning with their first ep but after messing around and jamming to a few songs I’ve come to realize that the Divine Apprehension ep also seems to be played in e standard. Funny thing Is Blake plays for another band called Eternal Champion (which you need to check out, awesome heavy metal band) and they released an ep/single kind of thing called Ride for Revenge/Retaliator and THAT song is played in e flat. Think he mixed that up a little haha!
Those 3 guys doing a skit in the background! lmao Then bringing him something to drink and eat! Great RigRundown as usual!
I wish i could find what happened to the Randy Rhodes guitar that had OZZY Tickets of a concert Randy played inlaid into the Finnish. It was white with black binding. I had an un-used ticket and the used half on the other ticket. A girl stood me up to go to the concert and could not manage to scalp sell the other ticket for a decent price at the last minute ,so I just kept it. Several years , about 8-9 years after Randy passed , sold them to a guy in a guitar booth at a guitar show in Houston. He had them inlaid into the guitar to increase the value of the Guitar . I wonder where that guitar is now ?
First guy is a really nice kid. Sorry, I'm old. His rationalisation of E tuning is cool. Like, lower doesn't make you heavy. The riffs do - and if you can write them in E, you've won.
25:30 most epic walk thru in the history of all walk thru’s. And that dude just did a topless hug moments before. It’s such a joy to see an Artist at work.
eric from gatecreeper!
lean and mean.....mean and lean hahahahahahahahaha wtf this guy
Tfw I realize that was Rob Barrett that handed him the drink
need a rig rundown for perry's asics
Good to see a young band with no BS about their gear that actually works on the road.
They love having all their amp/pedal settings on 6 o’ clock
It's not about the tuning and even further sometimes going too low without the right gear sounds inaudible. Winds of Plague played E standard also.
When is Premier Guitar going to hire some interesting interviewers that aren't completely inept to gear, asking the right questions and making the right comments? Can I have a job doing this?
You need to get code orange here
Definitely! It would probably be an hour long episode though with 3 guitars, bass, and Shade's synth set up.
Power trip kicks ass. Haven't seen them live yet but I bet they dont disappoint. Just in your face old school, cant beat it.
Hey, was that Rob Barrett handling him the cup of soda ? ROB FUCKING BARRETT ????
I used the little black JHS box with my 5150 2. It’s awesome , you push the front and keep the volume knob on the amp at the sweetspot. I used the box to keep the tone great at low volumes.
Powertrip
Is awesome!
The singer and roadies video photo bombing is priceless fuck yeah!!!
Rest easy riley gale❤
I hate when guys are like “ I think it’s these pickups or I think it’s this bridge” but will know certain obscure down to the very last detail
What song was playing in the beginning ? Of the video
6:35. Yeah hahahaha. You can't hold it dude
Cool review! Thanks
22:11 Rob Barrett , Cannibal Corpse with the vip iced tea delivery 😂🥤
Always let the interviewer hold your guitars
Cool gear, thanks for sharing ... )JO
That bass looks like an old Gibson RG or RD Artist series guitars. Haven't seen one of those in years.
E Standard is the only way to play.
Very cool band
I've played guitar for 30 + years now and I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard of battery powered pick ups.
How?
A surprising number of guitar players are unaware that you actually get better low end from lighter gauge strings. I went through that painful adventure back in my late teens learning guitar... thinking "gonna rock some 12's and blow the house down"... all i ended up getting was tone I didn't like and a bunch of bloody fingers!
Its way clearer and easier to control your tone i use .09-.46 works perfect
Next LP of Power Trip should be called LEAN AND MEAN.
“It doesn’t have a lot of gain on it, it just has a preamp” 😂
“We don’t really use that much gain”
*has gain dimed and a tubescreamer
Diming the gain on a jcm 800 is a whole different thing than diming the gain on an amp like the 5150
I looked up the output on those lace pickups Blake uses. It surprised me to say they’re rated at 24k and are super quiet with no hum even at high volume
9's are the shit for me. Slinky 9-42 and I like the sound and feel of 1/2 step down tuning.
Try 9.5 - 44 its even better on a 25.5 scale for Eb
The Mesaboogie backline behind them belongs probably to Cannibal Corpse ! Thank you for the nice video. Cheers from Morocco.
Did you get Gatecreeper??
We did not. And CC declined our request.
Cannibal never does rig rundowns, since they know most fans already know what's going on as far as their sound, and Pat and Rob aren't very talky guys.
I love touring musicians taking about what works, instead of what's new or is new and flashy. Over thinking it can be the death of some music.
Do code orange please!!!!
Bass player reminds me of Derek Smalls from spinal tap LOL
21:09 guys messing around in the background is pretty funny
Rob from Cannibal
Rest in peace Riley
Hey Perry they remind me of If Hope Dies from back home bro. Lol
'Mean and lean.'
I love Nick's boots. Chippewas I think?
Andrew Fultz I’ve been trying to find out myself. I was thinking Redwing Balcksmiths. Either way I can’t afford them!
"Jetson's vibe"? Who the hell is this guy?
North Texas all up in this.
21:05 the guys in the back
Some big band should come a long and help them out to make them the best they can be.
You mean like Metallica? I think they're on one of the Misfits reunion shows.
fortysevenpercentburnt they were, yeah...
Please do Immolation or Amon Amarth
21:10 the fellas in the background 😅😅😅
Nick Stewart's Tim Butcher pin FTW.
The whole time im just thinking about Pat Obriens pedalbord sitting on top of the mesa cabs….
If Chuck Schuldiner had a son he would be Blake for sure
I never noticed the large shirtless guy shuffling in the background.
Nick at the end of his interview: “If you don’t like it, I don’t care.” LOL.
"Standard Tuning" .... now is no longer "Standard" I guess. Marshall JCM800 half stack... just as loud as 2 Mesa full stacks in the background.
21:09 what is happening in the back lmfaoo
Ibanez plays a Jackson. If their other guitarist is Jackson and plays and Ibanez...
riley forever
