Thrash metal has seen a resurgence since its ’80s heyday. Megadeth earned a Grammy for their 2016 album Dystopia, and very recently Stranger Things’ brave headbanger Eddie Munson brandished a B.C. Rich Warlock for a literally death-defying performance of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” that catapulted the song into widespread pop-culture consciousness. But for metal purists, Municipal Waste and their cofounding guitarist Ryan Waste, plus their track record of seven mosh-motivating albums over the past 21 years, prove the genre’s brand of battle-axe riffery wasn’t a fad. Sure, the band’s sound has diversified the artform with the subtle incorporation of hardcore breakdowns and punk-rock-like choruses-but everything is still in fifth-gear, baby!
Ahead of their headlining show at Nashville’s Basement East on August 10, PG’s Perry Bean jumped onstage to talk gear. Guitarists Waste and Nick “Nikropolis” Poulos prove they can travel light but stay lethal with a few riff-makers, gassed-up Marshalls, and some green and yellow Japanese drives.

I’m very concerned about this duck
I saw them in Iceland in 04-05, they played in a tiny coffee shop, probably 30-40 people there. I think they were just visiting and played a show for fun. We lifted a dude in a wheelchair up so he could crowd surf. Such a fun show.
Small shows are the most fun 😁
that would've been a killer show dude and mad respect 4 lifting the guy in the wheelchair up. thats what metals all about....
@@randomguitarnote8887fr
This band is the greatest thing to happen to thrash since the 80s
them and power trip
@@RidinMyGrandmasCadillac Better than Power trip
@@Driven_Dragon power trip definitely had a tighter and metal sound, while waste leans towards the faster punk side and a bit sloppier
@@evandavies2536 Also love DRI. Saw then in 1986 in Huntington beach, CA, 2018 in Grants Pass, OR, 2020 in Medford, OR and 2022 in Boise, ID. Most underrated Crossover Thrash band ever?!
@@Driven_Dragon awesome that is sick dude!
Nick should have his own MW-AX custom with the 'W' shape since he's playing the right hand side
5:28 I think someone needs remind Perry that the JB has been the gold standard for passive high gain pickups since probably the 80s lol
That, plus the fact that JB stands for Jazz/Blues and not Jeff Beck.
Thank you
Seen MW 4x this year, Ryan Waste rips, plays all the waste songs with ease live
He’s also dumber than a pile of rocks.
Jesus nicks alternate picking was lightning fast
Yeah its is sounds awesome . Perfect for that thrash stuff.
As a fellow lefty I feel this guy’s pain when walking into a guitar shop
I feel that
Same
every time
In fact I felt so much pain walking in to see Jason Richardson’s sig on the rack knowing I can’t play it.
It's just cruel the lack of lefties
Love Municipal, but can we get some death metal bands rigs? I feel like you guys focus so hard on thrash as far as the metal players. And thrash is very minimal as far as gear. Let’s see some Blood Incantation, Full of Hell, Undeath, Gatecreeper, The Black Dahlia Murder, stuff like that. Love the channel to been watching for over a decade now!
MORE! We need more rig rundowns!!!! great episode.
I agree! These are fun to watch.
Thanks for just posting loads of these lately, Premier Guitar!
Always great to get your guitar-geek on watching these rig rundowns!
MW plays in standard. That is the heaviest shit ever.
Saw these guys last fall in Indy with Skeletal Remains and Crowbar. There was another band too, can't remember. But after the show I felt like I had been playing football with no pads. My whole body was sore and stiff. And I wasn't even moshing. I was just in the crowd trying to avoid the psychopaths
Dead heat was the other band, saw that same tour in November
@@jayneely8136 YES! Thank God. That was driving me nuts. It was just on the edge of my mind.
That’s how you know it was a good show! I had the same experience seeing Pantera in the 90s…shows were nuts man…
I play mostly chunky metal and I also use a JB in the bridge position. I stole that from Scott Ian. JB + Overdrive + Marshall-type amp, you can't go wrong.
I caught these guys live not too long ago while they toured with At The Gates. They were awesome!
Holy shit! Been waiting forever for this. Thanks, PGxMW! \m/
Hell yes!!! Been waiting for this one!
Saw them two weeks ago, absolutely shredded!!
I have the same setup. 2203 800 with v2 hot mod and jb guitar. My dream tone. When he was playing in the intro I was thinking, ah man perfect tone. David at ledgedary tones is awesome. Please go support him
Awful guitar tone. You must be deaf.
I had the same thing happen to my 2001 Ibanez RG7421. Japanese made, maple Wizard II neck, w/ a rosewood fingerboard... Twisted and can't be fully corrected.
Man i been a big fan since like 2006 or 07 seen the sadistic magician video an i was hooked!
Shout out to Rob Gray from RIP Guitars, Utah boi! Painted one of my guitars, get compliments on it any time I bring it out
I wish the big string companies would offer the unwound strings soldered, it's such a nobrainer, It must be possible to do in a fast high tech way. I've been doing for years myself with a soldering gun.
I love this band! I wish they would come to my town.
They're seriously worth traveling for. I've seen them 9 times and can't get enough. Hope you get to see them soon 🤘
What power supply did Nick say he uses for the pedal board? Thanks
damn! no landphil rig run down?
Love seeing a guitar with a kahler. I actually added a Kahler to my strat. And it's was easy to do. Probably way easier than a Floyd rose. And in some cases a kahler is better than a Floyd rose. Think faster pull ups like Slayer solos. Highly recommend it, don't listen to haters
50 bonus points for the Raven shirt \m/
Love uses guys!!!🤘🏽🤘🏽
Noticed how everyone is swearing now on RR..? What happened ?..did they suddenly get the ok to let rip? Couldn't imagine Rebecca Dirks dropping any f bombs...👍😂
It's weird to hear but it helps the artists relax more.
Dirks is probably the most professional at the job tho.
At time stamp 11:45 - when asked about custom specs? and his pickups, did he say he has D'Addario pickups in the guitar? Huh?
He meant Di Marzio, probably IBZ models since he mentioned that they are stock. I too make that kind of blunder sometimes when two names sound alike.
They wound a set of 9's around a magnet.
Hope you did Midnight too !!
I like the simplicity
bass rig? The white Gibson explorer is sick🤯
Pure gold! \M/
Thanks premier guitar i search for long time rig of municipal waste
Perry, love your enthusiasm and the uniqueness in your interview style. Keep it up man!
He’s a doofus. Total spaz/goofy fanboy
How high was the second guitarist? Thought his pickups were D’addario instead of Dimarzio and called his JCM 800 an “88.” Then he answered a question Perry didn’t ask when he asked him about what strings he uses.
Hahaha, i think he was just saying '88 was the year the amp was made - but yeah, definitely swing-and-a-miss on the strings question.... probably just nervous for the interview
1988...
He meant it's a 1988 JCM 800
@@godofdeadlydeath I’ve never called my amps by the year they were made, like I own an ENGL Fireball 100 I don’t call it 2015…because that is nonsensical.
@@zacharydoering313 People using vintage gear (or old cars!) will tend to specify the year like that
dude a marshall, does it have the mod. oh dude a marshall, does it have the mod. these guys make me laugh but i suppose id come off goody also
So good
the real question here is what shoes are nick wearing and wear can i get them ????
I've been soldering my Kahler strings since 1988, it's not a new secret.
It’s odd to hear the interviewer swear more then the rock star.
Something tells me that isn’t the correct description for this video.
I was expecting landphil rigdown 😪😪
Legit tones!!!!!😳
No Midnight rig rundown?
Saw them in memphis day after this was recorded
Man had to get that advertisement in didn't you...
Hell yes
Where's LandPhil's rig?
COOL!
I’ve never seen Perry so excited about anything as he is about this guitar?
9:56 15:20 if you wanna compare guitar sounds
Do Sammy Duet from Goatwhore, the nastiest tone in metal.
CRANK THE HEAT! Love that song guys! Daddario pickups in an Ibanez?😲Fuck yea! It should be a requirement that all the rig rundown hosts (except for Chris) take a Xanax an hour before the rundown occurs. Also try 200mg of magnesium glycinate or fish oil for anxiety issues. Dr. Peter
No bass :((
Scale looks like 30 in 🤘🏼
yeah you know, like, you know, like yeah, you know like ...
I want to see Cannabis Corpse lighting up the Rig Rundown
No Landphil?!? WTF
MW is boss Ryan is Boss
Should be more well known
cool video \m/
🤘🏼🤘🏼
It’s a mini tuxedo
That guitar tone is nasty
Perry being absolutely clueless about the SD JB
A jb is not a Jeff beck pickup.. the jb stands for jazz blues… 😂😂
seymour duncan SH-4 TB
JB stands for Jazz/Blues not Jeff Beck but everyone calls it a Jeff Beck.
Not including a bass rig rundwon for Municipal Waste shuold be considered a felony.
Nick Poulus is Dwight Schrute. You saw it here first folks.
Lol idk why but I hate it when the interviewers don't ask about the wood choices. I'm autistic about hearing that kind of stuff
its not d'dario....
A flying V is a perfect lefty guitar... what is he talking about?
“So that’s a pretty flat fretboard radius?”
“Yeah it’s straight up.”
“What pickups are those?”
“Well these are D’Addarios…”
Total meatheads.
their entire existence revolves around alcoholism and partying.
Calling them "Meatheads" is being polite
No bassist?
Ya'll just need to get married......BAAAHHHHHHAAAA......
This comment section sucks balls. I thought it was a great interview. Turn your brain firmly in the on position, and pay attention if you can't keep up.
2nd guitarist has Eddie Munson vibes 🤘
Stranger things fan ....bruh, the door is the way ------>
Is the fan really that necessary? 🤣
Now i like to own an FLYING - X
then i call it X-MEN WELCOME TO DIE!!
to play more Doom Metal and FFFFFff''ck Standar tuning, just give a 'B'elmont his Dropped B
🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱
Southpaw representation ✊
Hehehehe...porridge
I love the rig rundowns but seriously can’t watch it if the “interviewer “ is just going to swear all the way through it to try and sound cool! 😡
oh no, your sunday youth group will punish you?
It's very fitting name for a band. And why does the host have to use so much profanity to try to sound cool.
Because it bothers boomer church clun fans
I always love when Perry is on meth/speed/cocaine/coffee vibe
Especially with heavy bands
Too bad Municipal Waste had to be interviewed by the stoner doooood.. What a waste.. . He makes it like an SNL skit but without the humor.
He mumbles so fast and barely audibly I keep having to rewind to work out what was said. I think he’s a bit like a kids tv presenter who is massively out of his depth.
@@jonaskew7703 And he giggles like a stoned chick.. Sounds like a stoner. Always drops F Bombs. Hey I drop F Bombs all the time. But not in my professional Music environment of recording , touring or making videos . Im from Brooklyn. But when your doing a job, he should act professional. He is the worst ever and all of his interviews. at least the parts that I have seen are incomplete, sporadic, incoherent mess. Bolinger is really good and thorough and the girl they had years ago. Rebecca. She was the coolest. This turd is NOT cool. He tires too hard. He sounds like a low IQ basement dweller. I Blame his BOSS. Whoever is his BOSS at Premier needs to get their head checked too.
Municipal Waste are old
Thrash revival died years ago(thank god)
just being clear....
