Ian Hill retired his vintage Jazz bass decades ago and now exclusively rocks his signature Spector models. He brings along four of them and strings them up with DR Black Beauties strings. Two of the quartet use the BKB 50 set (.050-.070-.090-.110) and are tuned down a half step. The other two use the lowest four strings of a 5-string set (.065-.085-.105-.125).
Richie Faulkner’s main axe is his signature Epiphone Flying V that has a mahogany body and neck with an ebony fretboard. This sig features EMG 57 and 66 pickups along with a licensed Floyd Rose 1000 tremolo. The V is strung with Ernie Ball Nickel Wound .011-.048 strings and tuned down a half step.

i love that Richie actually PLAYED his rig, so we could hear it. drives me nuts when they discuss their rigs in uber detail, but never play a note. well done!
Or when they are too big of a star to show their own rig!
@@samsmith3025 Like Mr.Tipton..... Why didn't Glenn do this? Richie seems an OK guy but I miss Ken.
@@HrhFish Mr. Tipton is not on tour.
I wish they did that with Kerry King on the Slayer rundown, but maybe it has to do with soundcheck
@@HrhFish Andy Sneap from Hell has taken Glens position.
Good to see Ian Hill get a bit more exposure for a change!
Yeah, looks like he's enjoying it too.👍
Scrollkeeper yea no kidding. He rarely gets that much mic time. Good stuff
@@chickeastwater9883 did he? I thought that was the drummer.
I was always trying to get the publications to take notice of Ian and not just KK & Glenn, especially in Japan!
Scrollkeeper It WAS the drummer, Dave Holland, who died in Jan of last year (2018.)
I'm not that much of a metalhead but I find most heavy metal players are real unpretentious down to earth guys that are fun to listen to.
I could listen to Ian Hill talk about stuff all day. What a gentleman. I bet he has some amazing stories.
And he took this an an honor . What a cat !
I was trying to imagine all of the people (as a whole) that he has entertained over the years. It must be a big chunk of the worlds population !
can't wait to read HIS autobiogaphy :)
REAL ROCKSTAR! RICH!
Seems very humble
Ian Hill seems like a super nice dude!
That's the most I've ever heard Ian Hill talk! Amazing to hear one of the godfathers of heavy metal!
Yes
The guy is wrong -Ian Hill is not the founder of the band -he is a co founder with past guitarist KK Downing , get the facts correct dude !!!!!!!!!
@@jamesmccracken9323 he is still one of the founders so he is actually right but ok
Iran hill is a class act. He doesn't take himself so seriously like a lot of rock stars do. Love Judas priest
Sorry ian hill. Damn autocorrect lol
16:49 one of the best moments of rig rundowns ever. Long live VH.
As soon as Richie played the intro to (Take These) Chains... it was straight up fire 🔥
I'm a simple man, I see Judas Priest, I click, 'nuff said!
Amen to that!
As much as I appreciated the classic guitar duo in Priest - The addition of Richie, seriously, gave the band new "Firepower"! His playing is ferocious and his stage presence is awesome as well!
Yeah, its why megadeth and priest are still going strong (new members) while metallica and motley sound old.
@@4572dk No offense to Kirk but I'd love Mark Tremonti in Metallica, him and Rob Trujillo could give something fresh to it imo.
Not only his stage presence, but his backing vocals too!
@@MaestroJericho I agree with you. Mark would be my #1 pick to replace Kirk. I love Kirk but it'd be cool to see as you say!
@Right on Teddy!
I see I'm not alone in appreciating the fact that Ian gets some time here. What a class act he is. Two shows per-set of bass strings? WOW.
As a bass player , I have gone well over a year on a set . Playing 2-4 times a month . No pick . No plucking . Yeah they were bagged for well over 2 months lol.
@@IETCHX69 Same here. I have a bass, ( a short scale squire jag ), that I bought for my kid that still has the strings that came with it over a year or two ago. I forget. I play it too every so often as it's a fun bass to play. And other than being poor quality round-wounds - they sound fine and hold tune perfectly. Everyone here knows to always clean the strings and axe thoroughly before putting it away in it's case. Many bass players I know do likewise. I'll get around to changing them some day, lol. Two shows per set though? - whew! Maybe he's superstitious, lol. Cheers.
One show per-set of strings (bass and specially electric guitars) is quite normal in the pro music industry.
@@NoWay2SeeTheirHoax Been at this for decades but wasn't aware bass string changes every show or two were normal. New to me. Backup instruments with fresh strings,... yes. No one back in the day did this - no one I knew anyway. Main reason being, that bass strings can take longer to stabilize though harder to hear in a live setting. Six string guitars, that's a different world. I change those out constantly, especially before recording sessions, (unless someone wants the corroded or dead string vibe),. Now you have me curious as to how normal this is. Wish Mr. Hill could weigh-in on the topic. Anyway, you really can learn something new every day. Cheers.
@@jimp.7286 Here is an interview with Glenn Hughes. He says he changes the strings for every show. Look for topic #2 "Work on your tone". www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/glenn-hughess-top-5-tips-for-bassists-647143
So cool that the priest guys spoke with you in person and not some roadie/guitar tech like most of the big bands.
Thanks for jamming all these years im 64 yrs old and still listening to you you play, my friend still loves to listening with me on my porch I live in a senior mobile home park my naibors look at us and wondering what we're listening to and drink beer 🍻 🍺 and smoke,
As a bass player for 30+ years and a MAJOR JP fan, I was so happy to see Ian included in this!!!! I was even more stoked to see that he uses SWR!!! My 2 bass cabinets are THUNDEROUS!!!! I have The SWR Big Bertha (2x15 and horn) and my Goliath Senior (6x10's and horn). Unfortunately, Fender bought out SWR and killed the line :( I use an Eden Navigator preamp and a Crown 4002 XTi power amp :) I cut through EVERYONE!!!
JP FRIGGIN ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been a fan of Ian Hill forever! This is the first time I have ever heard him speak! What a great guy!
Ian hill is so awesome and his sense of humor love it
I like that Ian Hill doesn't take himself too seriously. I like when rock stars have a silly side and just enjoy making their music. All hail Judas priest
Thanks for including Ian on this. He is truly understated player and all around great person!
Ian has been rocking it in this band since I was born, and if you add in his previous stuff he's been touring for around 55 years. I love JP.
Ian's such an easygoing person - he's a joy to watch... Glad he got his own moment here, well and truly deserved!
People like to crap on his simple bass parts. But the simplicity made a perfect space for the shredding of Glenn and KK. His bedrock mentality and discipline is very admirable as a fellow bassist.
One of the best Rig Rundowns you've ever done. These guys were great.
Ian is one of those guys who doesn't get the spotlight but is the rock solid foundation of the whole band. His bass lines are always tight and smooth. Killer bassist.
I always prefer it when John does these rundowns. He’s the real OG rig rundown boss! He just keeps things lively and moving about during the interview. This one was especially awesome and informative! 🤘🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Adam Bickers yeah John is The Real Deal 😇 I Hate the other guy. He is awful. Bring back Rebecca ❤️
He definitely gets the job done, yeah
That guitarist is nailing those Priest sounds!
2 legends frothing over epic gear, epicness
Ian Hill, such a legend!!!
Ian Hill seems to be a really nice guy !
He does! First time I've ever heard him speak.
both seem pretty down to earth.
I seen these guys at Louder than Life in Louisville last year ( same show that guitarist had a cardiac aneurysm at end of show / look it up) and I didn’t go as a Priest fan, but left as one. Best band at festival.
These kids could really go places if they stick to it
Yes!! Hahaha!
@@TheJugulator62 I highly doubt it without autotune.
Great to see ian hill get some time!!! Seems like a genuine laid back guy, been holding it all together for nearly 50 years!!!
Lots of bands get basic fill in players but these guys fit Judas Priest like a well oiled machine, perfect!
Love it when the actual players do their own rig rundown. For me, this is right up there with the Bonamassa vid.
Logan Wilder You've met Joe? He talks about his guitars because people WANT to hear about it... Jealous Much?
I feel thE same
Bless You Ian! for the mention. What a wonderful 17+ years we had! Luv Ya & Miss Ya! You are a 'Diamond'.
I have one of Ians Nylon Picks from the show in Friedrichshafen/Lake Konstance in the fall of 1979. Accept was the special guest, and Def Lepard opened for Judas Priest. I was a young man, Ian was playing a Jazz Bass.
I never will forget that night. We waited for the venue to open, while Priest did their final Soundcheck with "Green Manalishi".
That show must have been tremendous! I’ve never been much of a DL fan, but they’re amazing live.
That’s awesome
Richie is a total class act. I love that guy. \m/
Richard's tone is insanely sweet. I need that
John’s reaction when Richie hits those big chords with the chorus is the best. That sound is huge!
Crazy awesome that they’re doing their rundowns themselves, sadly you can’t expect that with many greats
Richie Faulkner is younger than Judas Priest, let that sink in!
Ian Hill: what a gentleman!
Excellent segment. So cool to have them break it down. John lets them talk and knows when to interject. Great stuff.
Was already huge Priest fan but now huge Ian Hill fan.
Ian's a super chill, kind and down to earth guy. Why the hell hasn't he done more (or any) interviews over the years?
Its the fist time in 40 years I heard his voice
Cuz “bass players? Blyegh 🤢”
Jk
Great to see Ian get his dues. And man, hearing the intro to take these chains ... nearly wet myself.
Awesome signature Spector bass, Ian!!!
Ian seems like a really nice guy. I was lucky to see them play in Brisbane a few years back and toward the end of the night Ian positioned himself right at the front centre stage for part of a track and you could tell by his expression how much joy he still gets from playing. Nicest Bassist in Metal :)
Great band and great interview. Johns a cool guy.
Great Interview. I'm was never a Judas Priest fan. But Now I am. THANK YOU for taking the time with the Bass Players rig.. Bass is forgotten at times . So thank you. These guys came off as very cool and chilled out. GREAT. Much more success to them
Ian is such a Legend!
Hopefully there will be another one with Richie once he is back to his full power. Wish a speedy recovery for him.
I’m seeing Priest tomorrow for the first time in my life. I wasn’t ready for them in 1986 as I was still in my Huey Lewis/Madonna/Pet Shop Boys phase. I’m thankful I’m finally going to be able to see them live.
Ritchie is so cool really down to earth, he is one of the modern players really stands out. I really like his playing and his personality is even better than his chops.
I Love Ian Hill! He is a Legend!
Highlight for me was hearing Ian! Great conversation.
1986 Criteria Recording Studios...The band was Urgent produced by Tom Allom...I know...I was the guitar player in it...the bass player was Klyph Black...
Was he mad that Ian picked up his bass without asking? Lol
@@SpinalAlloy Nah...Klyph Black is the coolest dude....
Still got the Armoire you stole from Elaine?!?!?!?
JIMMY A GATES right in my living room!!
Nice :-)
I could watch/listen to Richie Faulkner play guitar all day
What a great down to earth guy Ritchie, its so great to see a fan of the band can one day get to be in the band and doing such a killer job, loved seeing Ian but at the same time as a huge fan of Glen's when I started playing guitar in the late 70's I am along with amy JP fans saddened t see his medical condition cutting short such a brilliant playing career. I wish him all the very best and forever thankful for the music of my teens soundtrack thats stayed with me all my life.
Shane Der Payne it’s cool that it’s happened twice with JP: Tim Ripper Owens and then Ritchie. Long live Judas Priest!
I vividly remember Ian doing Green Manalishi as a sound check with the band when they played The Peir in New York on the Point of entry tour in the summer of 81.
It's nice when the players actually give some time and not just go thru the motions. So really don't wanna be there and you can tell. So thanx to Priest for their time
Richie falkner super cool guy, real humble class act🎸
He did a solo at the Tool show in Nashville back in January 2020 and I was blown away. I had never heard of him but looked him up the next day. Seems like an awesome guy and can flat out shred on a guitar. I was an instant fan.
A bit of trivia: the Spector NS-2 bass is named after its designer, Ned Steinberger. He was an industrial designer who happened to share a workshop with Stuart Spector, and hadn't originally planned to go in to instrument design. After this he started to design his own instruments from scratch, and the rest is history ...
Ian Hill is THE MAN!
...conclusion..RF is perhaps THE nicest guy in rock /metal..... so down to earth
Wow, Ian what a cool down to earth guy. 🤘🏼
These guys are true gentleman and a real class act . Great rundown .
Legends! Cool too see them still playing live music
Ian Hill - what a lovely bloke
Funny note... Ian even stands in the same spot for interviews.
Ian Hill seems an appropriate name for this ‘inventor of metal’. He’s like my favourite uncle, however.
Best one I’ve seen , love the V but glad we could hear the explorer
maybe the best i ve seen so far... the richie s interview was like 30 min long and none a second of boredome, now i m gonna steal this guy sounds.. wow that was easy haha
Thank you Ian - Been listening to your bass playing for over 20 years.
Ian's humility is really nice to see. Incomparable influence.
"that was a beautiful, that was an incredible piece of furniture"
That was totally frigin awesome! I've been watching Ian head bang for decades now!!!
Lol British Steel- “Grinder”. Love it ❤️
That's the best looking V
My guitar teacher (RIP) used to get amazing tones with his EMGs. He had a set of SAs in a 70 Strat (with a 63 veneer rosewood neck) and used to run into a crappy practice amp in the teaching room. Wonderful bluesy/jazz tones. It really is all in the fingers
Would’ve loved seeing a rig rundown like this back when KK was in the band!
Holy crap... That setlist! Great to see them digging deeper, playing more new stuff too.
Ian Hill is THE man and he seems like such a lovely bloke. Love a good rig rundown! Keep up the great work folks!
This was great! Any chance of a Maiden rig rundown??!!
Would have liked to have seen Sneap's setup.
Richie is AMAZING!!!
I knew someone that knew Ian. Ian is a good bloke.
I agree with Richie on the versatility of EMG actives. There are also some high output passive humbuckers that are very versatile, like Gibson's Dirty Fingers. I have a Les Paul with Dirty Fingers and the first time I tried them, they impressed the hell out of me. I plugged it straight into my DSL40 and everything from Frampton to ACDC to GnR to Zakk Wylde, sounded great. Whatever they may lack in sweetness(vs PAF type), they make up for with clarity, warmth, punch, sustain, & tight low end. From Classic Rock to Heavy Metal, they just cook.
Love the double scratchplate on the flying v
Richie is the bomb!!.
I saw Judas priest live in the 70s....the loudest band I've ever seen!! My hearing actually stopped working during the gig...!!! It's ok now though...lol
One of the best rig rundowns I've seen! Great information and detail.
Kinda sad at the missed opportunity since they don't have a segment with Andy Sneap, who played on this tour. I think every TRVE metalhead is gutted that Tipton hasn't been part of these tours, and I know Sneap is a monster player (not to mention a superb recorder/mixer/producer for metal bands) so my curiosity for his rig shall go unsated...
Andy's been mixing up his rig throughout the tour as well, cause otherwise Richie's is still the same rig he showed in the DigitalTourBus video a year ago. And Andy's tech does Glenn's backup rig as well, so seeing that wouldve been cool
Awesome rig rundown, as always!
What a top guy, such a gent too
Ian gets two shows out of a set of strings. I haven't changed my bass strings in 30 years.
crush537 Crikey that’s gross😕
ouch
Ian is a true gentleman and Rudy Schenker does a pretty good interview
wow, im gona go and listen to some priest right now
If you looked up 'Bro' in the dictionary, there would be a picture of John - 'well cool, cool...that's greeaat man!'
its great when PG does a rundown and the artist himself/herself gives the rundown and is a total guitar nerd. makes life beautiful.
