My roommate and I hand feed our Squirrel Sammy, aka Samantha, and when we go out on the deck and call her, she will come if shes around. Sometimes shes waiting by the sliding glass door or on the deck railing! She loves peanut butter on bread. Last Fall we started throwing her bread and she would eat it and I noticed she was a female by her having nipples. I built a Squirrel house according to diagrams from YT where it was designed to discourage predators from being able to reach in and take babies. It had an upper level, and lower level. I stuffed it full of material from inside cushions. I attached it to the tree where Sammy was the absolute owner of! There were two other Squirrels half her size that she allowed in the tree, AND THATS IT, NO OTHER SQUIRRELS WERE ALLOWED. We came to the conclusion that those two Squirrels were Samm's babies from the year prior. She hadnt moved into the house I built and I was bummed out thinking it wasnt high enough as it was about 15-20 feet in the tree, but her leaf nests were all way up toward the tops of the tree but I couldnt get way up there! Then one morning we noticed Sammy coming out of the house and laying either on the wrap around deck I built on the house, or in the hole doorway half inside and half outside! I noticed how she RARELY left the house and basically NEVER left the yard anymore and I deduced that there were babies in there and shes a great Mommy protecting her young! Eventually we could see one head peeking out the hole while Mom was on the deck of their house, then two, then three, then four simultaneously! It was AWESOME! Im pretty sure that the house I provided, and the food we provided aided in the survival of ALL FOUR BABIES! One day they ALL disappeared and we were bummed out! Then one day Sammy returned and we think she took her young to build their own leaf nests in their own trees because Sammy was all wet and dirty, and HUNGRY! Every once in a while one or two of her new babies shows up, but we cant hand feed them like Sammy, but Sammy is back living in our tree in two new leaf nests way up in our tree. She wont go near the house I built anymore! Im thinking its too hot, plus it might need taken down and cleaned out cuz I dont know what Mom does with the poop and pee from the babies for the 10-12 weeks where the young dont leave the house. Im going to take it down and clean it. It was so cute watching the babies come out to explore one at a time, then eventually JUMP from branch to branch gaining confidence! We had never see Sammy jump from trunk to trunk (long distances) until her babies were out in the tree, it looked like she was training them on their capabilities! They started ZINGING all over the tree and it was hilarious! They would play fight, and chase each other! Birds have also flocked to our tree and when we call for Sammy to feed her, birds come zooming in every time! We now feed them too and have water for everyone too. Anyhoo!

Another beautiful, soothing video, but it’s a pretty poor reflection on humanity when a squirrel who’s less than a year old can take a nut from a person, then sit & eat it next to a cat, all in total peace & quiet, yet so many people can’t seem to remain calm & rational in the knowledge that other people even exist. So many would rather fight both reality & each other than just take the time to look beyond themselves & appreciate the beauty & wonder of nature & take comfort from the amazing moments doing so can create.
