As a FOH sound engineer i was lucky to be part of a production where, 100 x TMS 3's and 40 x TSW 124's were used. Its a sound i will never forget and still hear and feel today, the sound was to die for......My Dream, to own the largest turbosound TMS 3 and TSW 124 sound systems in the world its time to bring vintage back!
"Tony and John, who were also responsible for founding Turbosound in the 1970s, are accredited with several generations of revolutionary loudspeaker designs including the TMS-3, Flashlight and Floodlight systems. They are widely known for their pioneering work and ethos which established many of the principles which subsequently became standard audio industry practice. Whilst often imitated their designs have not been surpassed and have been the first choice of many permanent and touring sound applications around the World.

You're right, the modern digital line arrays don't sound like they should. Maybe in a good few years, but it ain't this year! That's a nice rig you've got yourself there. Great video, excellent posting. Thanks, David.

The best live sound I've ever heard in my life was 1975 ELP 'Brain Salad Surgery' tour. It was the only true quad system, all JBL electronics and speakers. They took out seats in the arena for a perfectly symmetrical sound field with the 3 man mix crew dead centre. Now I've heard more concerts than I can remember, but I have also mixed more concerts than I can count. I've owned 3 recording studios, multiple concert P.A. systems and am now a retired, dare I say high end audiophile. (hate that word) So I absolutely do know what I'm talking about.
I recently saw July Talk at Toronto's venerable Massey Hall-- one of the finest sounding concert halls in the world. I've seen many shows there including Supertramp and Wynton Marsalis and have worked the room myself-- July Talk sounded like absolute crap. How is this even possible given that today's gear is so much better? For the record I don't like line arrays for the same reason I don't like my Magnepan's.

I did sound for a 1950s/60s jive rock and roll event I used a martin audio W8C top cabs and ws218x subs and just like the tms3 the W8C sounded superb the only thing I find with certain brands of linearray they can sound barky in certain frequencies but I use martin audio line arrays and they sound smooth no hint of harshness like some linearray

They're in my shed. Repainted etc but two of the 15s actually have non standard recones(not sure who did the recone). The 15s have very high BL and light cones to get to 250hz and these recones are rubbish. Finding a decent recone would be impossible or at least very difficult.
The speakers actually came to me stripped and in pieces like the video, not sure if they were in pieces because of this specific video or the guy that had them in between. One was still sanded like the video(no further sanding or painting). Still get a kick about all the talk in this video yet nothing being done 😂
One of the 10s had a broken tinsel lead too. Old golden ears in the video talking about uber quality didnt notice one mid doesnt/didnt work 😂
I don't gig them or anything, too bloody heavy.

Well, I posted my comment as a bit of a response to this, as someone had asked about a followup. So it kind of looks like the project fell through.
      " Lunchos El Maximus
I actually bought these. He did absolutely nothing with them after this video(and all the procrastination)"
Can you shed some light on this?
When you say the system will be complete in three years, are you saying that what you guys are doing is a complete arena size TMS3? Seeing that the video is from 2015 and you say 2022, I'm not quite sure how that works?
I know Fane still makes the kits for a recone, and you can also get replacement diaphragms for the JBL so I would assume you could get the parts pretty fast. At any rate, glad to hear you're doing this. It's a great system for sure.
On a completely different note. What do you guys do when it comes to the Turboblue paint? My TFS needs paint, and they are from before they all started with the water based paint. Turbo has quit with blue so they can't be of any help - and that Tuff Cab stuff is not the right colour, and probably not as durable as the PU paint.
      Any thoughts on this?
      Thanks man

    • @TheVintageSoundCompany
      @TheVintageSoundCompany  5 лет назад

Hi @@AB-80X Thanks Mate, we are aiming to have the system complete in the next 3 to 5 years by around 2024 its a big and long term project with custom tri amps which is on the facebook.com/thevintagesoundcompany Facebook page the reason for the time is I am funding the project myself as when we launch we don't want the company to be subject to debt or Corporate Investors despite been offered a large sums for investment as I have seen the disaster that this can bring personally. Yes it will one day be an arena size system. Regarding the turbo blue paint this is the only place I know where to get it at this point. cannonsound.com.au/collections/duratex/products/duratex-speaker-cabinet-coating-roller-grade-turbosound-blue-1-gallon-3-8l Cheers Mate for all the support regarding driver we are still considering whether we will be going Fane or Precision Drivers its yet to be discussed.

      @@TheVintageSoundCompany
You should have a look at the new PD driver with the PEEK diaphragm. It has a lot of the airiness and smoothness that the Beyma drivers Turbo switched to after JBL. Personally I think the current Fane offerings are a bit on the harsh side, and for some reason the sound seems "stuck" in the horn.
If I may offer a suggestion. A while back, I replaced a bunch of drivers in both some TMS4 and TSE bins. We wanted to get rid of the cheap EV drivers Turbo switched to when Harman took over. For the TSE we initially settled on the BMS 4540ND, as we felt it greatly surpassed the PD offering. But then a friend of mine brought by a pair of Beyma CD385ND and we threw them in the TMS4 just to see what they could do. They absolutely blew us away. They had the smoothness and airiness that the Beyma fitted TMS bins are famous for, but with the transients and resolution BMS is so well known for. Give them a proper listening. It would be a shame not to.
Also, Beyma drivers in a Turbo bin just gives it that extra sense of originality;)
Thanks for the paint link. I'll see if I can find the same paint somewhere here in Europe.

Hi @@AB-80X, Thank you so much we have 24 TMS 3's coming soon and we can not wait to experiment with them so thank you for the information above. The Turbosound speakers we have for side fill are the THL-818 Subs that all have the PD Drivers in and the TXD 580 have the Beyma Compression Driver and all the others are PD. I have strip these speakers down today ready for painting soon. Love to get some TSE 111 in time to come. Cheers Mate great chatting and thanks again for all the advice!!
