Hey Russell, What an epic system you have. Next year we start our next system which is with TMS3's like yours. Would love to see some photos. justin.whitfield@thevintagesoundcompany.com.au
Miss these old TSWs and TMS3's. Our company had 126 of these with 56 124's. We also used the 124's under our Flood rigs for trance parties out in the sticks with a 24/24/12 config. This all run off old BSS 355's and BSS amplification except the 124's which were on 5000's. What an awesome sound we used to get. Bins were TSW-218's not the 21's
Thank you for reaching out and sharing. What an epic system that would have been. And the sound would have been absolutely magical. I remember back in the 90's hearing the same system with almost the same amount of boxes it was a sound I never forgot. It was that same system that started this passion. Love the BSS Amps we have 5 of them which we will use for our pair of TMS-3's If you have any photos of that system I would love to share it on our FB Page. events@thevintagesoundcompany.com.au Cheers Justin
The old 124's were fun boxes. We ran them here in Scandinavia back in the day off of Crest 10001's monoblocked. We mostly ran them with 721's at the festivals and arenas. But to this day, a small system with early Beyma TMS4's and 124's is a Turbo system that has a superb and unique sound that is my fav Turbosound sound signature to this day. It was always fun when people asked us about lugging those 124's around. Sure they were big, but our 20U amp racks with the 10001's were what wore you out. Much heaver than any speaker box unless you're screwing around with old Meyer boxes.
Wow you have blown my mind, I have to replace tsw 124s with precision devices 2450s, I have the rear magnet motor ls 2403 sitting around and they are in perfect working order, used the upper to chassis to make the changes
Fascinating to see these mammoth drivers outside of the box! Great content for us vintage audio nerds. Keep up the good work mate! Have you heard how these compare to the Funktion one f124?
I'm not sure how they figure 30dB. There will be a 9dB power gain with 8, and up to a 9dB coupling sensitivity gain although in practice less. So that will be a maximum of 18dB unless power handling is vastly improved but it would have to be by 16 x to make up the extra 12dB, and by then you'd probably have thermal compression.
What we found back in the day was that we got more than an 18 db increase with these when ground stacked, especially on hard surfaces. They became much, much more directional as you added four on top of four - it wasn't just a matte of two that couple perfectly equal 6 db. Not sure I recall ever seeing a 30 db increase, but 24-25 was common unless you were on soft grass in which case it was more like 21-22. I'm guessing that in the right setting as you add the stereo pair of the two stacks, I guess you might see a coupling that could potentially add the last bit, but then it is obviously more like 16 bins. Both Tony and John can be a bit "enthusiastic" with the numbers, but both the 721's and 124's were well known for their uncanny ability to couple together. Forgive me for saying this, but it kind of sound like you're reading off a lot of technical theory on how things should be. Have you actually worked and run FOH with these in the field at large venues? I get what you're saying, but venues are different, speakers can act differently etc. Is it physics? Yes. But there are variables and back in the day, Turbo made their name by making stupidly efficient systems that coupled better than just about anything else.
@@AB-80X nope I haven't worked setting up big rigs like this. What you are saying makes sense though. The wall of subwoofers will reduce the radiation angle behind them - sort of how the bigger Danley subwoofers have good rear rejection. They become part of a wall and you end up with something more closely resembling quarter space than half space, which could be good for almost an extra 6 dB in front of the subs where you want it and less sound behind them where you don't.
I have 4xTHL 828 with 6xTHL 811 tops (with original drivers!) and while they output serious mayhem and sound really clean and crisp as they are driven with amplifiers that have serious overhead, they really don't have anything below 40hz so some reinforcement to maybe octave lower is seriously required, would 4xTSW-124's do the trick? Any suggestions?
Hi Fella5s, What an epic system you have! If you looking to go below 40hz you will need the TSW-124's they will do the trick. or Try and block stack all 4 of your THL-828 together and ad a 4db boast @ 50hz and a 1.5db boost @ 40hz on your eq. I find that also does the trick. You weren't be able to run the THL-828 as hard but you will get that beautiful low end sub sonic sound. Cheers Justin
Awesome, I have 16 tms3’s/8 tsw24’s still with original components. Sound great and throw a long way. Great to see your system coming along.

I forgot to mention Russell if you ever decide to sell your system I would love the opportunity to chat about that. Cheers Justin

low freq coupling!! those cabs are bada$$
Very cool
That's Precision Devices, not Precise Devices 🙂
How is the driver mounted? I can't see any holes for screws?.
