One big reason these older planes keep going is they are not pressurized. Fuselages of newer planes (like the electra, and their new 737) will stretch and contract from this. That means metal fatigue, and a shorter life span for the airplane.

I stand in awe of a crew that can keep piston aircraft flying in nearly intolerable weather conditions. I've worked on aircraft outside in +20 degree weather and it's miserable. I can't believe these guys working in -40 degree weather with wind. I shiver just thinking about it.

I flew piston twins in WV commercially as a pilot for a coal company and a co-pilot for a law firm. Never ignore a woman or a piston engine. Talk to them, all the time, waking them up, cruising with them, “landing” and most of all when they want to get difficult! “Come on baby…..let’s go home!” Stuff like that. My practice was to work with my mechanics as much as possible to learn as much as possible about them. You learn the sound when they are humming along and when things just don’t sound right. Especially starting, you sort of have to “wake them up” but then the oil starts flowing and everything gets happy in there and you know it’s gonna be a good day, hopefully.

    • @michaelsamuel9917

@@UncaDave I remember reading about the Russians Pilots putting Av Gas in their oil sump to Prevent the Oil from Freezing up during the cold nights which the German air Force then copied after learning it from captured Russian pilots, apparently when the engine restarts the Gas would evaporate and the engine would be ok. I thought they'd be using something similar by now? like I put cetane in my VW diesel fuel to prevent it from gelling up also in big rig trucks I'm a trucker.

    • @UncaDave
      @UncaDave 2 года назад

@@michaelsamuel9917 Plus now days we have sump heaters and some people can install a device that pressurizes the oil in the engine to get it everywhere before a start. Of course it only works best when the oil is either heated or at temp that allows flow. When it was 40 degrees or colder I used a Dragon propane heater to warm my engine up and even in the cockpit on the avionics in a more reduced way.
Yes, the ice pilots up there might as well be at the Russian front so to speak!

Yup, DC-10 has 3 jet engines from the 1970s/ 1980s era. The first plane I flew on as a kid to go to Disney World. Similar to Lockheed L-1011 with a 3rd jet engine under the rudder.

@@ShaunsCentral-Maine The very first airplane that I flew on was a Cessna but, the first passenger jet I flew on was a Stretch(ed DC)8. I crossed the Atlantic in that Stretch-8 but back then (1968) the plane couldn't carry enough fuel for the entire crossing so, going and returning required a refuelling stop in Iceland. As luck would have it, both crossings landed in Iceland at night in a pea soup fog so all I saw of the country was a dinky little terminal building. Bummer.

During WWII on the Eastern Front the Russian and German pilots would add gasoline to the engine oil prior to shutting the engines down. This thinned out the oil so the engines would start on the cold mornings, then when the oil heated up the gasoline would evaporate and the oil would return to its proper viscosity.

RE: Whale Cove, the definition of independence means not relying on anyone or anything outside of your immediate group for survival. Unless the community of Whale Cove can "make their own electricity" they are NOT independent. They depend upon a generator, probably gas fueled; the requires "planes" to bring in supplies of fuel, just like this mission is bringing in a back up generator. They might be independent of needing food supplies and other items--as perhaps they hunt and live as their ancestors did off the land. However, they have adapted to using electricity, which is artificially provided by technology not sustainable by ancient ways. They depend upon the outside world to sustain their electricity for cooking, lights and heat.
I imagine this is so, because they are no longer allowed to hunt their traditional whales that would give them blubber which would otherwise fuel their homes for these needed necessaries. So I imagine that this was the trade off. The end result, making them dependent upon modern society. How sad. Had other cultures that do not need whales for their food and such left the whales alone, there would not be a problem of whales needing protection and going extinct.

i want to know what joe's thoughs are on the fact they took gas instead of the heater. because of the fuel shortage, did the crew think about the fuel more than the cold? if they didn't bring the gas would they have made it?

DC10? I wonder about WONDER! These are DC3's [2 engines] & DC4's [4 engines]. The video states these planes are from WWII before the jet age. The DC10 is a tri engine jet airplane ✈! Great 👍 video though!

DC-10? Flew those and they sat higher off the ground. I was also a wrench on these old bastards and I can't believe he didn't frost the plugs on that first cold start attempt.

If they didn't take the extra fuel they would have been fooked.

Indeed. There are probably more Skyhawks around than most other planes combined.

Ok, too much drama, not enough preplanning, not the best planes to use during the winter. Too much mayhem!!!!! Too many issues with each episode, not enough contingency plans.
Great crews doing the best they can!!!!

Why are these documantaries alway so overdramatic ? For us Europeans it all makes it a bit silly and over reacted. Shame because the story and plane a good
