- Today we're going to check out some artworks by American graphic artist Philip Lawvere who lived in Germany during the eighties and he was the graphic artist of Noise Records. So this guy worked with german or teutonic thrash metal bands such as Kreator, Vendetta and Warrant but also bands such as Celtic Frost, Hirax, Exmortus and Rage. He created their Kreator's mascot Violent Mind and it's said that he gave the guys in Kreator the idea to change their name from Tormentor to Kreator. So in todays video we're going to check out some metal album covers made by Phil Lawvere. Enjoy!
Correction: Phil Lawvere didn't create the artwork for Celtic Frost's Morbid Tales, he is credited for the reissue and not the original. So he didn't create the artwork for Morbid Tales.

Pleasure to Kill and Emperors Return are my favorites... 🤘
Cheers!
Thank you so much for giving the artists the recognition they deserve.
i cant imagine Metal w/o their contributions.
yeah, the artworks are almost half of the experience.
Andreas Marschall would be another great artist to feature, he made a lot of awesome metal album covers.
yes, he is definitely one to cover for a future video.
Indeed! Obituary \m/
This series is awesome. I'd love to see Dan Seagrave next.
it's coming some time. cheers!
He did an amazing job with the Kreator art covers, especially Endless Pain (1985). The other arts are really dope too.
Yes Sir!
Always loved his artwork. Especially that of 'Emperor's Return'. One of my most favourite pieces ever! However I learned two things from this video. Bald guys with pointy ears and and horned helmets are a recurring theme. 😄
haha, yes sir!
Correction: Phil Lawvere didn't create the artwork for Celtic Frost's Morbid Tales, he is credited for the reissue and not the original.
Great video, thank you! Wunderful to see the artwork and there with the name of the mighty Deathrow is mentioned!
Thanks! :) Cheers!
Thank you for paying homage to the artists behind such legendary album covers we treasure in the metal community.
cheers!
I would be curious to see other album covers from the guy who did Helloween's Keeper of te 7 keys albums, if he did any others. Could be another video like this one.
we'll see what the future holds. cheers
Thanks for another video helping me attribute albums in my collection to the artist! Great work. 👍
cheers
Truly amazing! pure art.
Cheers!
Enjoying this series some great artists getting their due here. also made me decide to pick up Arachnid album heard the intro on here hundreds of times but never checked out what is was from I will now be rectifying that.
hehe, yeah it's an old demo from 92. :D Cheers!
Once again, nice good job on repping the artiats and giving them their due. And I also just got schooled again because of this segment. A few bands I never heard of, but will courtesy of this channel.
cheers!
I love these artwork series!
cheers!
It would have been nice to not only see his art but also an interview with this guy. 🙂
cheers!

So Phil Lawvere is responsible for alot of those Kreator album covers. Very cool

Great artist!
Cheers!
Awesome!!! 👍
👍
I know that a bands such a Witchfynde and Magnum weren't exactly the wildest, fastest, or most groundbreaking releases of the NWOBHM era . But they had possibly some of the best album cover art in all of music. Whether the music is that interesting is a matter of opinion, but the artwork certainly was indeed
cheers
🤘Awesome🤘1 of favorite 2:22 it´s brutal🤘5:33 amazing album🤘Poweful video🤘
thanks boss. Cheers!
Those Endless Pain and Pleasure To Kill covers might have sold more t-shirts than albums.
hehe yeah
Lawvere is the Death Metal artist. Proto Death?, Death Thrash? . All these bands were on the cusp of Death Metal. My favorite cover art is either Warrant - the Enforcer, or Kreator - Endless Pain. Warrant, Deathrow, and Vendetta are slightly less Death Metal than the other bands. I would suggest the artist that did the layout for Witchfynde - Cloak and Dagger, and the artist that did Magnum - On a Storytellers Night. The cover art for Diamond Head - Borrowed Time is also one of the best
more thrash I would say since I think of Celtic Frost and Kreator more as thrash bands.
@@RuthlessMetalYT In the 1980s Kreator, Celtic Frost, and Slayer were considered Death Metal because it all didn't have the Thrash Crunch staccato blocks of sound. The albums of pre Terrible Certainty Kreator, and pre Reign in Blood Slayer all had the bottom Heavy cavernous Sound more associated with Death Metal than Thrash Metal. It was Death Metal pre ridiculous Sesame Street Monster Vocals
@@RuthlessMetalYT I would consider Kreator - Endless Pain, Pleasure to Kill, and Flag of Hate Real Heavy Speed Metal, or Proto Death Metal, and Terrible Certainty forward as Thrash Metal, due to the change in guitar tone, higher Vocals, and more social conscious lyrics. The early albums all had lyrics about monsters, and serial killers. Early Slayer and Kreator were more unhinged , Thrash is more controlled. It was all influenced by Motorhead, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath though. Just taking it to faster and dirtier territories.
Nice video😄👍
thanks boss
@@RuthlessMetalYT 😄👍
"Behind The Mirror" is def my fave by him.🤘👿🤘
cheers!

Damn I forgot all about deathrow!
they are so underrated. cheers
@4:42 Shinobi?
cheers!
Poor man's Frazetta
Cheers!
Can you make The Artworks of Andreas Marschall?
yes, it's in the plans.
@@RuthlessMetalYT Thanks bro, Andreas has been an inspiration for me to make 4 fictional power metal albums (Glind Buardian Project)
Love Phil Lawvere's artwork. Much prefer his style to Ed Repka even though Repka gets all the praise.
Cheers!
Endless pain is one of my favorite album covers
cheers!
Great video but I’m almost certain that Lawvere has nothing to do with the Morbid Tales artwork.
he is listed as the artwork artist on the reissue. not sure what he did though.
@@RuthlessMetalYTinteresting. Just checked my copy and it has very detailed info on who did what on the artwork side of things but no mention of Lawvere
Yes my copy of Morbid Tales has
Cover design: Tom Gabriel Warrior
Heptagram design: Martin Eric Ain
Morbid Tales logo: Tom G Warrior
Heptagram drawing: Tom G Warrior
Back cover and lettering: Urs Sprenger
I suspect reissues contained Morbid Tales & Emperors Return combined and he’s just being credited twice when he just did Emperor’s Return. Not everything you see online is accurate, someone can post one thing mistakenly and other sources duplicate it.
yeah, you're propbably correct. :)@@jimmycampbell78
Manowar vibes! kkkkk

Very inluenced by Frazetta, isn't-he ?
cheers!
pleasure to kill such an influential thrash metal album. not damn master of puppets, not peace sells. its almost an early death metal album
yeah, it's not one of those friendly american albums. :D
It is THE early death metal album
Do more ranking videos
I should perhaps do that. :D
