- Today we're going to check out some artworks by English graphic artist Derek Riggs who is known for his work with Iron Maiden. He created their mascot Eddie the Head. Derek Riggs worked closely with Iron Maiden from their first single up until 1992. But he has also worked with other known metal bands such as Stratovarius, Bruce Dickinson, Budgie and Timo Tolkki. So in todays video we're going to check out some metal album covers made by Derek Riggs. Enjoy!

What he did for Maiden with the artwork and the creation of Eddie is just otherworldly amazing. Iconic work!
In my opinion, Derrick Riggs played a humongous part in making Iron Maiden such an iconic band. What an artist!
yeah, there aren't that many artwork artists in metal that are so tied to one band and be able to help them form their image. Derek Riggs is a legend. Cheers!
Hard to believe that Number of the Beast is an unfinished piece of work and still looks amazing. He brought it in to show Rod what he had done for the Purgatory single.
Rod "It was too good for a single, we'll use it for the new album. Go make something else for the single."
Derek "it's not finished."

From my personal experience , and listening / watching countless interviews and videos over the years regarding Maiden , I can tell you that many people got into Maiden after either seeing an album cover in a record shop, or poster and decided to buy a Maiden album purely due to the captivating artwork without ever hearing their music prior . Without Riggs they would not have been as successful as they are today .
I agree with that.
A lot of artists who do these artworks for bands are quite talented. Their way of capturing the imagery of what the band stood for and what the album stood for is just amazing. It's like, they get the feeling of seeing an album and going "Wow, I gotta check that out".

All the Iron Maiden artwork Derek Riggs designed is so awesome. He is the man who created Eddie. After he stopped doing artwork for Maiden it's not as good.

Cool video. I never really stopped to fully appreciate how good Iron Maiden's artwork is. It's iconic. When I was a kid in the 80s, Maiden's art was part of what intrigued me about heavy metal. But I never really took time to look at the artwork up close and see the subtleties. Your video did that. It's cool that you showed the art, not just from the full length studio albums, but from a lot of the singles. There were a lot of covers I'd never seen before. Great stuff. And other than the Bruce Dickinson stuff, I had never seen any of the non Iron Maiden covers that you showed. Amazing work.
yeah, they have some of the greatest artworks of all time. and yeah I needed to include the singles, they were great too and people aren't as familiar with them as the albums. Cheers!

I knew this guy in Kingston, NH in the 80's that would do glass etching on motor vehicles windows of your Maiden artwork. Great visuals and always enjoyed your creativity.

I miss his artwork on Maiden's albums these days. Just a matter of taste, but I still didn’t get those Eddie's from TFF and Legacy of the Beast tour, not even this new one from Senjutsu!

What happens when your favourite band has as amazing artist create your favourite album artwork? Answer Iron Maiden. Eddie must be the most iconic mascot of all time in metal, yes there were mascots in other bands but none quite as noteworthy or well used while it was clever marketing it was also beloved by the fans. Could you honestly imagine an Iron Maiden show, album or shirt without Eddie? Derek Riggs is the man responsible for creating this runaway success and No-one has been able to capture Eddie as well since he stopped doing them (although I do like Book of Souls/Senjutsu Eddie's).

I love Gamma Ray but I can't in good conscience call that Powerplant cover good. It literally looks like a 3rd grade Powerslave CGI knockoff. And it's a shame because Powerplant is a fucking masterpiece.
Yeah, I think the more photoshopped CGI looking art of his later career ain't as good as those old paintings. Cheers!
Andreas Marschall is another great cover artist in metal (Blind Guardian, Grave Digger, Rage, Running Wild, Dark Moor, Kreator, Sodom, Obituary, In Flames etc). What do you think about him?
