What will it cost to replace the Harmonic Balancer on a Corvette

  • In this video I describe the process I went thru in replacing the Harmonic Balancer on my 2007 C6 Corvette.
I cover how to identify when it is going bad.
What other components should be replaced during the process
Why you do NOT want to use another OEM Harmonic Balancer.
And what it cost to have a local corvette specialty shop do the work.
Here is the link to Masterworks Automotive Services of Madison Heights Michigan who did the work:

Just replaced the shifter cable in my 2006 C6, A6 with 73K miles on it. After the cable replacement a quick check under the hood revealed a slight wobble of the harmonic balancer.
A quick call to my Chevy dealer of choice in Rio Vista, Ca. and they are saying about 6 hours of labor to replace the harmonic balancer.
And part of the sales pitch for the new GM harmonic balancer was that they have seen trouble with after market harmonic balancers also.
About $1350 or so to do the job. No new belts, no new seal, no new tensioners, the only thing new was the harmonic balancer.
So as I drive the car very little in the winter I think when the weather gets a bit better next spring I will be replacing the harmonic balancer myself.
I guess I will learn to cuss like a sailor.

    Thanks for the information.
I had a 2005 C6, with the Lingenfelter supercharger installed. At 23,000 miles, I replaced my 1st harmonic balancer. I used a factory replacement. It failed again in 4000 miles. The 2nd time I used the ATI balancer. All is well now. What is upsetting, is that GM has several service bulletins out on this problem, but they don't stand behind the repair.

I have replaced my harmonic twice. I think the first time it was Doran, the second time OEM. I saw another video that ranked the C6's and it said, i8f you want one go with the '2' engine. A GM engineer told this guy that the '2' was probably the best platform Chevy has ever made. He said you could turbo it, supercharge it, nothing seemed to phase it.I wish I knew that before I bought my car.

I once looked at a real nice 2001 C5 Convertible . Everything looked just right until I watched the motor running. The crank pulley was wobbling significantly. When I pointed this out to the owner - he looked at me with a strait face and said - there is nothing wrong with it according to Chevrolet. I told him he shouldn't be driving the car like it was. A month later he had put a TON of miles on it - I forgot the exact numbers but it went from like 89,000 to like 94,000 miles in just one month. I couldn't figure out how anybody could put that many miles on a car in so little time. Some people are just not good liars. Knowing how he blatantly lied about it - I passed on the car.

I changed my damper with an ATI unit, with an ARP bolt. I also replaced the front oil seal, all belts, hoses, and tensioner. It took all of six hours, dropping the engine cradle to remove the steering rack. The only thing that I would have done differently, is replace the plastic power steering pulley with a steel one.

Summit Racing also makes a great balancer for around $200. I also used an upgraded ARP balancer bolt. Additionally, I purchased a pin kit & had the balancer drilled & pinned to the crankshaft, as the balancer spinning on the shaft can become a problem as well. Money well spent while you're already in there. Hope this helps.

Strangely , one part nobody ever mentions ,when I pulled the original Damper I found a shim which has a rubber piece on the circumference., it’s a $ 28 CDN part.
It does help to cover the keyway all of the aftermarket Damper have instead of having to mess with ATV filling the Keyway..

I am planning to replace mine soon. I am thinking of doing it myself. I have already got the brand new ac delco balancer, the crankshaft seal and bolt. Note: my original balancer has lasted over 206,000 miles, 19 years. So I am sort of sticking with the oem parts. I have also been researching how to do it, and gathering special tools. I have a removal tool set, an installation tool set, and a special tool to hold crankshaft still, while torqueing bolt. The main thing that is worrying me is the extreme torque required to be used. what if something breaks. What if something goes wrong. If you hire a shop, how can you be sure any corners are not being cut? if job not done properly, there could still be wobble, even with a new balancer. One great way to ensure it is done right is to do it youre self. Already replaced other pulleys and tensioners, and belts many times over the years. That part is easy. I have done the steering pump, and alternator decoupler pulley, before using a special tool kit for each before.

Does this happen to all LS engines, do they all have a similar design? I see the HB for the supercharged engines have a keyway a drift, on a standard LS can you machine a keyway while the engine is in the car and put in a key and drift to "beef it up?" I personally love the C-6 body style, I think it is the best looking Vette of all time. I really would like to buy one before they start appreciating out of sight. Yup those c5 and c6s are money pits especially if you dont do the work yourself!........i brought a c5 convertible for 10k which is pretty cheap and the previous owner showed me 6k worth of reciepts which included the new balancer.....Now I have the car and i am getting codes and the traction control doesnt work, rear end is leaking, ac vent issues but i do much of the work myself!..........c5s and c6s are cool cars but they are junk, typical gm products!.......i dont care if i get heat for telling the truth!

I think you got ripped off. The standard hours of replacing the balancer and seal is 4.4 hours

I’d like to see that on a 100k vehicle. That steering rack is not fun to pull. I’m at 6hours to pull it out by myself. Granted if I had a lift I could shave some time off. This is not an easy job.

@aikamatwal6333 - 4.4 hours on what exact engine, year, model? I could only see that if able to just loosen the rack and move it, not have to pull the radiator and fans . . . and of course having a quality puller / install tools. Not to mention having done it before on that exact model vehicle.

$725 labour to replace a couple pulleys? Wow, you guys are suckers! That's an hour job including clean up and an oil change. The LS engine is the easiest engine in the world to work on.

You clearly have no idea how big a job is to replace a Harmonic Balancer. There is ZERO chance you could change it in an hour...None. Zero. Nada.

@@FindtheRightRoad If you've never dropped the steering rack before I can see it taking 2-3 hours your first time. After 2 or 3 times it's just going through the motions and you'll have everything memorized. I can just about do a cam swap in 7 hours.

Just keep in mind the majority of Vette owners do not work on their own car. So they want an idea what it costs to have a pro do it....@@wally7856

@@FindtheRightRoad Fair enough, but I still think that book time is too much. 6 hours plus another hour for tensioners is union time including lunch and coffee breaks. I suppose it keeps the shops in business but at your expense.

Chevy dealer near me charges $195 an hour labor. My 2006 only has 9600 miles so I’m hoping to not have to do this for a while

I will respectfully disagree. My 2003 model we put 120K miles on it. Only thing outside of maintenance was an alternator. Otherwise brakes, tires, oil changes...it was reliable like a Camry

I currently came into ownership of a 2001 c5 convertible and I'm in the Toledo/Detroit area and I appreciate the info on the shop you used. My dad passed away from covid and he was doing some exhaust mods along with some upgrades and I was questioning what reputable shop to use. Thank you again, great video🤙
