From BarbaraMONKEE: thank you everyone for your kind comments. Yes I loved being able to talk about those years after such a long time. Most people have no idea I worked for them-so I appreciate The MONKEES PAD for giving me this opportunity!
This was absolutely the best interview, most people usually bash stars ✨. But you seemed like you fit in so well. Thank you for sharing. WOW THE MONKEYS.
I was 12 in 1967 and went to the Monkees concert in July in Greensboro NC...Jimi Hendrix opened! Sorry to say I hardly remember any of it! Except I was crazy about Davey, of course! Wow...we are really old! ❤😂
Davy was my love at age 10 till I turned 13 ( found out he was married). The Monkees got me through my parents' split. I literally played their songs as I went to sleep for three years 1966 till 1969. I'm now an oldster ( I was born in 1956 ).
Loved it. Now she's the type of person I could work with. Loved that her experience while working with the Monkeys (Among other BIG STARS ✨) was so refreshing to hear. So glad she had A positive experience until she left.
no question it's a fantasy..behind the scenes is one thing...the public message is what truly matters...and in The Monkees case, I'd say it was all good
. What an ADORABLE woman !! LOVE how excited she was to share all her wonderful memories, and gift us with the feeling of what it must have been like to have been there !! Thank you, Mr Russo !! .
@@TheMonkeesPadPODCAST . Wow... What a SWEETIE.....and just a GREAT reminder of ALL the others, those people 'behind the scenes', that also have great Monkees-related stories to share !! Kudos to you for tracking this WONDERFUL woman down, and of course to her, for opening this little window into that AMAZING world for the rest of us !! With the passing of Davy, Peter, and now Michael Nesmith, it is stories like these, and the videos that you have taken the time to put together and post here, that are preserving part of an era that is all too quickly fading away..... Again, can't thank you enough for this INCREDIBLY rich bounty of Monkees lore !! What a BLAST !! .
She seems like such a sweet lady! I do remember once coming across a post somewhere from a gentleman who commented that his mother worked for Davy in 1970 and she also signed his name, per his instructions on mailed requests for his autographs so I always wondered if that was done back in the early monkees and thanks to Barbara it was.
It was something she's not particularly proud of, but it was part of her expected duties and very common in those days. Millions of fans and only four Monkees and 24 hours in a day.
WOW! What an incredible chat! Barbara made me feel like I was right there along with her on the tour and on set. Nice to see her at the end of the Christmas episode too. And you did a great job of just letting her run with the stories & memories.
Ohhh, so that's what you meant by being asked by the creator! I agree with you wholeheartedly, just took the words right outta my mouth! God bless you.
@@jamesage24 Haha! Yep, I was thinking you were saying God. Who knows, maybe God told you too! 😆 However, thanks for showing this to me, I enjoyed this very much.
What an amazing, informative interview! Such interesting anecdotes. Barbara seems like such a sweet lady. Loved hearing all the inside scoops and seeing all the photos!
Hi Barbara!!! What a fantastic experience..lucky you!! I was 7-8 yrs old back then and was enamored by the Monkey TV show. I learned a lot...I'm so inspired. God bless!!!
This is a fantastic interview! Its great to see Barbara discussed so much we as fans have never heard before especially that Summer of 67 tour, can't wait to see what you have in store for future monkee pad shows!
Yes, Barbara was great! I felt like I was on tour and on the set with her & The Monkees. Have you ever listened to Podcast Valley Sunday? That's a great one too!
Fascinating interview! Great to hear what it was like working for them and anecdotes on other musicians who hung out with them (e.g. Zappa singing "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" to them on guitar). I was around in L.A. back then but just a toddler when the Monkees were big.
Fantastic, fantastic interview. Barbara is the best, what special memories she shared with all of us. She really made us feel like we were there, amazing. And great questions. I really appreciate how you ask questions like "Tell me about Marilyn" You shine a light on people who are unsung. Barbara's memories of hearing "Sgt. Pepper" on the plane gave me goosebumps. Loving all these interviews, but this one especially!
Your kind words are most appreciated. Believe it or not, after our interview, Barbara questioned her interview as lacking interest. I assured her it was just perfect!
She has a very interesting perspective and I enjoyed this interview. But I was wondering what her life was like after working for the monkeys. I mean what is she been doing all these years?
JR writes: I asked Barbara to reply to your question. She responded: "After leaving The Monkees, I collected unemployment for a short time before I went back to work for BBS Productions (Bert, Bob and Steve) who had moved over to the Columbia Pictures offices to work on several films for Columbia. I worked for Harold Schneider on production plans, and I loved typing scripts which most people did not. Working on manual typewriters doing all those indents and tabs were not easy. In January 1970, I moved to South Lake Tahoe where I worked at Harrah’s Casino first in the slot department, carrying a heavy 20-lb apron full of nickels, and then as a cashier. It paid $1.18 an hour plus tips which we all split once a week-about $5 as I recall! It was an exciting change of scenery to explore the beautiful areas surrounding Lake Tahoe, live in snow for the first time, learn to water ski, as well as seeing all kinds of shows-including Little Richard’s nightly appearances in the Cabaret!! In 1972 I moved back to LA, went on a fantastic low-cost tour of Europe (7 countries in 3 weeks) with 2 girlfriends from Screen Gems, and then continued on with an eccentric secretarial career before getting my MA in Transpersonal Psychology in 1983."
5:43 Oh MY GOODNESS! Barbara was so sweet how she just broke the heart of millions of teenage girls in the 60's. Those autographs on those 8 x 10's were FAKE....hopefully those 60 to 70 something ladies out there will forgive her. PEACE and LOVE Barbara. The truth is funny sometimes.
Great interview & insight from Barbara at the height of Monkeemania. In the eye of the hurricane as it were. I would've asked her what does she think of the ongoing legacy of The Monkees and how it keeps on going generation after generation. Also did she later work with other studios after leaving Raybert/Screen Gems? Would've also asked about if Sally Field or Elizabeth Montgomery every crossed her path back in the day. Great stuff!
Barbara returned shortly after to continue working with Rafelson's troupe on "Five Easy Pieces", "Drive He, Said", and that series of films before moving to Tahoe and exiting the movie business.
Hi T-Bone-from BarbaraMONKEE: So happy you enjoyed the interview! Yes I did see other actors on the Columbia lot. I remember particularly Larry Hagman used to drop by the office in full costume and makeup between scenes on Dallas. He was a character and loved to talk. Sally Field was around but I rarely saw her- not sure where her shows were filmed. It was an exciting time! Years later I worked for Academy Award-winning filmmaker Saul Bass for 6 years. Saul was known for his film titles and was a master of the short film genre. We made a short film for Robert Redford so I got to talk to him a few times-that was a big deal for me after falling in love with him in Butch Cassidy (sort of like the girls in love with the MONKEES!)
Hmmm wonder if the Beatles had someone signing their autographs for them? ---sounds like something Brian Epstein would've been willing to do. OR, is this an "only in America" kind of thing? Great interview. I'd be curious to know more about her recollections of their musical development/overhearing their OWN music being played etc. (unless I missed that).
@@TheMonkeesPadPODCAST That's both good to know and not really surprising. But thanks for the note to that point. Very interesting and fast-moving talk. She sure is informative and expressive. I'm glad she stood up for them with that chap who kept insisting that the guys weren't actually playing. Some incorrect stories just refuse to be corrected, especially with people more in search of confirmation of their "beliefs" than the reality of things. (sorry for the lack of follow-up email. Very few breaks from difficult times these months. I will, tho.)
