I have one 2. Back when it had 408hp and 510hp with brakes mods and suspension ofc and ate multiple gt4's on the nurburgring. It's not even a contest. Not saying all the drivers drove their gt4's to their ability's but some of em definitely were. Just more torque and less weight also, even with mods still way less money than a gt4 so who da fuck wants to spend that money for a cars thats worse than the base model. Fuck sound 2, 2l turbo sounds good 2 just different. Mine sounds even better than this one if I do say so myself.
Having just bought a 981 2.7 Cayman i cant even imagine how much of a rocket ship this thing must be. I couldn't get on with the noise of the 718, but this car is very impressive.
Whats youe opinion on the 2.7l? Is it quite sluggish? Im considering the 2.7l vs the 2.5T as that can easily achieve the high numbers but its just the sound that is a turn off for me.. the flat 6 is just a porsche icon
@@rdrezi1717I love the 2.7. It’s an engine that needs to be wound out to get the most from it. There’s not much going on below 3500rpm but from then on it’s a party all the way to the limiter. If you’re used to the shove of a turbo car you will find the 2.7 slow. But if you want a car that you really need to drive to get the best out of it the 981 2.7 is the winner. Oh and the sound it makes is heaven!
@lambo4ever thank you for the imput, I love the sound of the 2.7l but I am so worried it may feel slow for me just coz as you said I am used to turbo push and a much higher hp ouput over 275hp. It is a very stressful decision making for me haha

I’d like to see this go up against a GT4, I expect it to be faster but would be interesting to see how much. For an alternative to a GT4/GT3, I’d probably use an A110S as a basis and if I could get around 350hp out of it I think it would do serious damage given how light it starts off. Less mass also means it’s easier for high quality dampers to control and should still work well on British roads.
I drive on the nurb multiple times a year and even with 410hp and 510nm I eat a gt4, also (with the mods I have) it's the better car in the corners also, I passed more than one gt4 and even gt4 rs'es and yes definitely some of them were good drivers and pushing their car. A110s can't be tuned to 350hp because there are no parts available for it, also I have driven one and it's a childs toy compared to the cayman, it's not even close.
Funny enough I've been to Goodwood today in my mate's 2016, 918 Cayman GTS and we were saying a base 718 Cayman with a few mods would be a great track car. Great video Sid! Would love to see some telemetry data on a track vs a GT4!
@@imwayne4159basically an ecu remap or software tune depending on what you want to call it, you have the engine control unit reprogrammed to increase power of the engine by way of increasing fuelling boost ignition timing etc, apr is one company that offers such a service
@imwayne4159 basically the 718 Cayman S has a 2.5 4cyl engine, where the base is only a 2.0 4cyl. the ECU map basically changes a few things to the engine giving it more power. In the Cayman S, people say its a lot more powerful than a modified 2.0 base Cayman. but hey, I can't afford either so 🤷♂️
Nice review and impressive performance for the 2l turbo! I'd like to see what they could do with the 2.5. My 2.5 GTS with similar suspension mods and R compound tires but stock engine is also faster than most GT4s. With a tune and more aero it would be hunting down 4RSs easy at a fraction of the cost. I think I would still like a GT4 though! 4RS in my dreams.😅

So 60k in vs 80-85 entry for gt4….. but suspect you then lose that in residual resale if you ever come to sell…. Great vid though and interesting to see.
Remember I bought it for 40k and could never stretch to a gt4. 10k on parts and 10k on labour over 3.5 years in small steps. I could never afford to spend 20k in one hit
Unfortunately GT4s can’t be bought for 80-100k anymore in the US at least. 981s are pushing low 100k rn. I’d say the Base Cayman/boxster plus mods is the better car overall if you want the perfect street car that can do track duty. While I love the look and the performance of the GT4/Spyder’s, they’re not very practical in my eyes for day to day use. Also personal preference I guess.
Great concept looks great…but simply put if I ever get a Porsche (said I’d have one by the time I’m 30 and I’m now 44!🤦♂️) it’s gotta be a six cylinder symphony I have my eye on the 996 turbo at similar money once tuned to ‘silly performance’

The engine is basically 2/3 of the 911 engines which are very strong. I couldn’t afford a 2.5 to start and liked the idea of the smaller lighter engine car.

I remember James from JayEmm on cars didn't like the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0's suspension as the car felt like it lacked compliance and instead skipped on a lot of bumps on the roads he tested. How's the PDK stay cool without a dedicated cooler? I have heard about the Cayman S having issues when tracking the car due to lack of transmission cooler
@@kaivaksdalSlower yes, problematic I'm not convinced. Guy on IG has a 981 GT4 with a ton of miles and very little problems. Not sure of their reliability overall but they seem to be decent and my buddy never had issues on his but he only had it for 3 years.
Good option. Surely could achieve similar end result for less £ too. For example £10k in labour seems high given the mods! That’s 3-4 weeks full days of labour in most reputable garages.
Exhaust is full sound but yes other bits had to have you on full blast (alls fine until the either the exhaust clip or a the adverts cut in and my ears are left still ringing!!😂)

How much is a standard 2.0T remap? It has to take you up 350+ bhp for an extra £500-£1000. Not sure I could justify more than that, then again if you love the car, who’s to argue.
Nice review but too quite.. Remember to look into the camera lens, its your audience eyes. If you could inset a POV cam on the road Sid, get a feel for acceleration

Adding all the labour together over 3.5 years - fit suspension then all bushes then tracking then radiator then charge cooler then exhaust then brakes then oil separator and so on. You see how each bit of labour adds up.
all well and good, but you will never get the money back when it comes to sell- so its a false economy. Better of stretching to a GT4 which will hold its value.

My car sounds way better. Went with a fabspeed cat bypass downpipe and x pipe exhaust tips. You can hear the turbo so well. Had a softronic tune on it with extra burble but I took it off.

Putting a bunch of power into a base Cayman does NOT make it a GT4 killer. It will not beat one on the track. The GT4 will be far superior in chassis dynamics and all.

20k into a base 2.0 Cayman doesn't make sense. A cheap 2.5 with a APR ECU map will get you 420bhp alone

I'm suprised they didn't use the EA888.3 motor found in the GTI/R/S3...those motors reliably make +500hp on a stage 3/big turbo setup

Remember I have the gt4 3rd radiator, uprated charge cooler and water methanol injection. It’s fine on track with no loss in power
The overheating problem is only with the 2.5 turbo not the 2.0 turbo so yea

expensive way to get 450hp, as modded car resale will be very limited vs getting into a 981 GT4 at 60k (leggy one) it'll hold value
Not too bad when you spend a little bit at a time over 3.5 years. Old leggy 981 will be slower and problematic.

It’s a lot but remember I did it all over 3 years on little steps so each bit costs money. I’d never spent more than a couple of thousand in one go. 👍

Own a 718 touring, phase 2:410 bhp, costs 4000 euro's. A touring is a cheap GTS.

That engine will be dead way before it prime. You can't take an engine like that and turbo charge it... The compression isn't designed for it.
