- Against the background of life in Douarnenez, I sail across the bay for a night afloat.
LES GRAS DE DOUARNENEZ
It is commonly called les Gras de Douarn or more simply les Gras by the regulars. It lasts five days in mid-February and consists of a succession of balls and carnival parades. The origins of carnival date back to 1835. On the first evening, the king of the carnival, named the Den'Paolig, is enthroned and then hung as a mascot on the side of the market hall. Den'Paolig is always based on a real person in the locality. This mascot is burnt on the last day and gives way to a congress of costumed people in the old harbour.
SOUND
The music in this video was either recorded live at les Gras de Douarnenez, or is taken from the iMovie library. Otherwise ambient sound is used throughout. I still struggle with wind noise, as can be heard, but am experimenting with various ways of addressing this.
MY BOAT
Do you want a boat like mine?
She is an adapted Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany, including her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are quite common in France. www.vivierboats...
Similar dinghies can often be found for sale in the French magazine le Chasse-Marée

Mr. Barns we are close to the same age I think. I’m 63 and about to retire the second time. I so enjoy your videos and your lifestyle. I used to sail a crew for my father when I was a young. When I went off to college that was the end of my sailing. After college was marriage, kids, life. Now, I have found this computer and RUclips with you. I don’t know how you get the videos on the RUclips; but, I’m so glad you do. I will finally quit work (anesthesia) in two years. I would like to hike a long trail (4,000 Km, 2,600 miles), Mexico to Canada. I don’t think I’m too old yet. You certainly sail alone, on big water. A man can do these things as long as he is able I think. Good on you. Good on you for making the videos. I know they are extra work, when sailing is often work enough. I think you were an architect? Your mind, your body, begs for the stimulation. I know. God bless. Texas
You can learn how to do anything on RUclips. Just plug in the question, how do I download a video on to RUclips? Easy 👍👍👍
Papa Jeff.I guess he's jounger than us.The beard make him look older.
Take a look at SV SEEKER here on YOU TUBE.This man started building a huge steeljunk after he retired and is nearly ready yet.His message is.You can do everything as long as you like it.
RUclips is a super medium but don't forget your hike.Cheers from germany
I’m 62, Papa Jeff.
PCT or CDT? There are some great videos of those walks, I think I've watched them all!!
Roger Barnes thought you were about ten years younger 👍
Roger I've made this comment before but it does bear repeating. Your reports of your travels give me so much joy. I find myself smiling and laughing, and becoming so engrossed with the pace, feel and sounds that I almost feel I'm there with you. Thank you for sharing this wonderful part of your life with us.
Thanks Roger...I prefer the sound's of the water and bird's... thanks for all the brilliant videos and commentary.
me too Donald
I love the simplicity and honesty of your videos, really enjoyed this one.
Hope to see more.
Thank you
Your music tracks are generally pretty classy, but I like the soft clunking sounds of life on a wooden boat better. And, I like the idea of stopping for lunch - especially if I were in France. Love the Opinel!
I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to picnic in France without an Opinel. ;)
@@MarcelLENORMAND I never leave home without one.
Yes, your soundtrack experiment was a success for me! The rattling of the water against the hull, the flapping of the sail and the whizzing of rope are part of the joys of small boat sailing for me! Thanks Rog! regards Roger, Australia!
That loose-footed sail makes a lot of sense. Must have saved you many a headache.
‘Just discovered you, Roger...’Have been bingeing on your wonderful videos. They arrived at the perfect time in my life, having just sold my blue-water sloop that I took to Mexico. But now - with the “Willful Simplicity” (the name of my future dinghy) you have shown me, there will be more anchorages and sea tales. Thank you so much.
Thank you Mr. Barnes for all your videos. A little like Sunday afternoon village cricket - there's always a feeling that the world isn't so bad after all when your videos come along.
I second those thoughts

Thanks Roger for this and all your videos. They provide huge satisfaction (strange, given how vicarious it is as a viewer) and inspiration. Hugely refreshing & lovely to learn of the lack of development / ‘capitalisation’ in that part of France and of the spirit of the people there. May they embrace you as the good-hearted person you clearly are and may you live well and long there. Thank you too for the moment of personal truth & emotion; entirely lovely. Living one’s truth is so important and sharing them can help others to live their’s. Stay well!!
Roger , I love your videos as they are both entertaining and relaxing. As a veteran seadog , I believe that a small outboard motor would enhance your cruising experiences and add a great margin of safety , given the crowded waterways and occasional heavy weather that you encounter.
Paul in Canada.
Looks like you have found your home, Roger. Look forward to seeing your next try in getting over the bar. Fair winds.....
Just found your channel a few weeks ago. Have been going through your videos and absolutely enjoying it. First: you are an English version of my 90yo uncle who taught me to sail in his 24ft “fat bellied” double ender from 1924.
Decades later I bought a 40ft “French yoghurt cup” Dufour. It has served me well as my home since 2010 sailing from Denmark to Florida singlehanded.
You have now inspired me to downsize. Probably to a 15-20ft one-off sailboat/rowable dinghy that I will be building over the next couple of years.
Watching this video was very raw and wonderful. Your situation with England is very relatable for my wife and I with the current climate in the US leaning very much to “starboard”....
Thank you for your simple and inspirational videos
Roger, it's why I am here as well, there's no keeping up with the Jones. I have a boat on the Rance, happy days.
Mr.Barnes I so enjoy your videos on your lifestyle by your boat . I allso enjoy to have breakfast with you at your boot at coast by watching your video. Thank you very much for your sailing videos. Turkey.
What an unaffected joy your art is Capt. Barnes. May your seas remain forever free of Le Grasken!
Wonderful video!!! As always.. So very real, raw and warmly honest!! That's what inspired me about Dingy Sailing... Stripped back to what is really important... Fair winds Roger...
At the Bay -- Mansfield
The sun was rising. It was marvellous how quickly the mist thinned, sped away, dissolved from the shallow plain, rolled up from the bush and was gone as if in a hurry to escape; big twists and curls jostled and shouldered each other as the silvery beams broadened. The far-away sky -a bright, pure blue- was reflected in the puddles, and the drops, swimming along the telegraph poles, flashed into points of light. Now the leaping, glittering sea was so bright it made one's eyes ache to look at it.
Fabulous, we feel exactly the same way about our little piece of France 🥰 .. another super video, thank you Roger
The same reason I moved to France, my life has become more enriched and I know I have changed. Why? because I have embraced France my village is nothing special but the residents are a joy. I am very honoured to have been accepted. What more can I say . I am looking at either building or restoring a boat. Enjoy Roger and good sailing.
" Less is more" beautifully demonstrated in your video and persona, if only i could emulate it!
Looks like a great place you have found to live!! I have lived in Denmark for the last 21 years and although I enjoy a trip back to Yorkshire My home now is Danmark!
Enjoy your New life and dont look back too much! the rear view mirror is smaller than the wind screen for a reason 😉👍🍷
that was a great way to start the day thank you I now want to visit Douarnenez :)
I love this part of France, from Roscoff to the Crozon peninsular. My wife and I took our daughter/son in law and toddler Luca and we had a great (short) stay in Douarnenez. Very near where your piece to camera was filmed at the end. You make me wish I was a tad younger (and fitter) as I really enjoy and indeed envy your "cruising" the Brittany coast. Keep these nautical travelogues coming Roger - please.
Brilliant stuff Roger, your new home looks amazing. atb
From your smile in the closing, I can see a sense of relief. Politics can drive anyone to drink! Trust me on this. Cheers from the U.S. 🍻
Thank you for another great video Roger. I frequently forward your videos to my children and Grand children and point out your philosophy on life in general. I believe that it is very relevant today as you are perceived as a thoroughly decent fellow who sets a good example for young people to follow. (old school actually). Please keep up the great work.
Isn’t France a fabulous place to visit and live? Another super video Roger!
Cheers from down under!
Wonderful little film! I love the sound, sounds similar to my dad's little craft. Brings back memories, so does Douarnenez where I've been as a little child. Good shots of the trip, that morning light.. the whole capture of your plan and how it panned out.
To close: I'm glad that you have found a home away from home. These are strange times indeed. But they have been very strange before.
Cheers. And thanks..
We all who seek your videos weekly or so, are enjoying this newest release very much! Though without music in the background, this video is not diminished in any way. And I tell you, the viewing of this footage was very pleasant, as it always is. I'm sorry you're feeling sad regarding something in the U.K. At 60 years of age now I've begun to read PLATO, (who lived 428 BC - 328 BC) something I've never done before, and I tell you it's extraordinarily fine writing, extraordinarily fine! Perhaps you'd be well served with a go at it.
I understand your little comment at the end of this great video.
I have lived in Japan for 30 years and it really gives you a lens with which to view my own country (Australia).
Thanks as usual. gary
It’s like going back in time watching your videos, thanks for sharing with us.
Your videos are like a breath of fresh air, I would love to move to western France, or Portugal
As informativ and charming as ever. I did not miss the music. The sounds of nature are easier on my nerves.
Roger thank you for another great video ! I prefer ambient sound over any music, however good it might be. Hope you will love your new home. Keep these videos coming, it is always a pleasure to watch you. Cheers, Z.
A touching video Roger, I'm enjoying your sailing videos, thanks for sharing.
Thanks that was a great place to visit such a lovely community spirit. What more could you want than bread cheese and a beer in a boat. Cheers Alan.
Pâté Hénaff too. I clipped the bit where I opened the tin.
Just some good wishes from Melbourne Australia , wishing you many more years of just showing us how it's done, where it's done ,and why, many thanks.
Roger, just finishing your wonderful new video brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing, and providing a peak into your thoughts and mind. What a wonderful place Douarnenez is. In Britanny I think?
My wife and I have been sailors for decades. From London UK to Canada as a teenager, I wanted to sail on the West coast, and via work, I made it, and have sailed the Strait of Georgia, and the Gulf Islands for three decades in our vessels, all wood.
You and your hard working dinghy have enabled me to be along along as a virtual partner, though I express this crudely. Because of vertigo and age (85), I now "sail" my energy along, building models, mostly boats. My present project is a 3\4 inch scale model of a Chesapeake Bay shallow water 19 foot catboat, from the USA naval architects Atkin and Sons. It started as a model for lake sailing using RC, but my natural interest (skills) for detail and precision has led it to become another mantlepiece item.
Once again Roger, Thanks!
Rodney Maennling Duncan Vancouver Island
Roger, I think I understand where you are coming from...very dissatisfied, I left the UK for France 30 years ago, and was received with open arms. Took my GP14 with me to lac d'Annecy for 11 lovely years, learnt to scuba, met a French Vietnamese lady who is now my wife. We now reside in the USA and I think I may have jumped out of one frying pan and into a fire......on a brighter note, I recently bought and read lovely book and found it to be delightful, witty, and with some dry, wry humour....oh, and also full off wisdom and useful advice. Keep the videos coming!
I'm one that prefers less music and more of the surrounding sounds, but regardless Roger, you always make beautiful videos. I especially like how you speak slowly and narrate over the natural sounds. That parade reminds me of Burning Man parades at the regional burns, or of parades in south Louisiana, the region I grew up in. “Laissez les bons temps rouler”
You can feel the happy vibes,👍🌻
Roger you really know how to show the sheer joy of sailing. Keep the videos coming.
Another great video! Good luck with life in France! I hope you will film the renovation project, it is quite exciting to see the progress👍
I think I understand Roger, been looking for somewhere myself, there seems to be a 'heaviness' in the UK that's been building up for some years, great to see people having fun!
Thank you so much. I found this so moving. I feel exactly the same way about such places. Maybe such a spirit exists somewhere in Britain but after sixty three years, I have found it only in Europe. I will escape this sad, misguided island. Maybe I will visit your petit coin de la France
Please keep it up, Roger. Your videos and your book are truly treasures.
Cracking video again. I swallowed the anchor just over a year ago and it's Roger's adventures and others of a similar nature that keep me sane. Also I love France!
Delightful storytelling. Thank you for the inspiration.
Thanks Roger. I think you keep us all sane and Ive learned so much, about boats, France and you. I would love to listen to your opinion on the world and of the human race sometime. Also perhaps do one on your navigation gismo's? I would love you to expand on your architectural life. I am a retired carpenter in NZ, and some of your projects are older than we are as a country.Anyway, keep on keeping on my friend.
Thanks for sharing the joy. :)
Brilliant it’s lovely to see you seem to have found yourself peace on your own terms, perfect.
Such a wonderful dance with nature!
Charming man. Charming surroundings. Charmed life style. Roger you made the choice that was right for you. Your political non statement was well made. Keep the vlog coming please, the new season is upon us very soon.
Idyllic. I used to live in Guernsey and sailed from there to Brest on occasion, I well know the tides of the region, they can be problematic!
Thanks for all your videos Roger. They are inspiring especially during a wet & windy Breton winter which it seems we both endured. I too have settled in France in a small village outside Camaret & I fully endorse your comments regarding the quality of life here in Brittany particularly if you enjoy sailing. Hope to see you on the water this summer virus permitting. Salut.
Wowee I have to go there. Great outfit Roger, genuinely.
Informative, natural, quirky, drôle, varied, well-informed British amateurism gold. Very happy to see new additions to this series. Love the traditional craft and beautifully made up hawser lines. Incidentally, there’s a lad in the States whose You Tube channel ‘Troglodyte Guitar Show’ uses the same theme tune music we hear opening many of Roger’s videos. Look forward to seeing further episodes. Neil, Drascombe LBC ‘Lazybones’.
As always, Roger has given us another wonderful video. Thank you sir.
Thanks Roger love your meal breaks and the adventures to hidden corners. Glad to see you adjusting so well to your new home.
Ah, my wife and I cycled there when the World was young and so were we. A great place, like Stroud if the sea came in this far. So glad you are enjoying it. All of your comments are true. The whole of Brittany is like this. I wanted to live there and become a plumber, but we went back and I became a chemical engineer instead (much the same 😁). Enjoy.
“Civilized Lunch.” Great idea. I love it.
Un superbe film pour cette fin d'hiver! Merci. Et la découverte de la ville de Douarnenez pendant cette fête des gras: Roger, tu es sous le charme!
I enjoyed the sound of your boat bobbing up and down on the sea.
I also "escaped" but to a land-locked country so the sound of the sea is just wonderful.
Looks fantastic...the Bretons certainly do appear to have a zest for life & good for them 👍
Hi Roger. Loving watching all that you put out. Really hoping after all this mess to head down to my sister in Normandy then hope to sail the Swing festival.
It's been such a pleasure watching your adventures, and I hope one day to be as confident as yourself.
Please keep safe and well in these troubled times.
From a person you've never met.🌞
Roger, I love your videos...so calm and relaxed. I’m sure you have no idea how many of us would like to be you, crazy costume notwithstanding. 😁
To find the built example of dinghy cruising? What a fortunate find. Enjoy!
You are a joy. Thank you.
i think i know thesecret of Roger...its his voice ....its mesmerising.....
It is wonderful you have found a happy place. Nothing is so important...thanks for the video once again...
Fantastic video. An absolute joy. But yes - we live in difficult times .
Fantastic video yet again Roger. Safe to say you're enjoying your new home. Looking forward to seeing more videos of it. The pace of life appears to be slower than over here.
Nice job as always. Every time I get on board my boat recently its being blowing over 30 knots. This reminds me of why we do it.
I watched your video twice.First this morning and than again at afternoon just to understand what you said at the end.
The smell and sound at the seaside of bretangne is fantastic.I love the wrecks , left behind on the other side of the museum port in Dournanenez.Hope they are still there.
Cheers from germany
Martin Höflich The wrecks are still there. Getting progressively more wrecked...
Looked like a nice ride across the bay. Great video of a nice area
Great video!
Don’t know why but enjoyed watching you eating your lunch whilst anchored...
You are most welcome in France, Roger. I would gladly export to UK dozens of French compatriots I despise in exchange for you only!
Tschuss.
Very special, very moving. Thank you for sharing. A real treat.
Really nice videos Roger. Congratulations on your new home.
Certainly sounds like you have found your place, so I wish you the best!! I once found a place much like that and was fortunate to enjoy it for 3 years.....then it was gone! So dive right in, the waters fine.
Homebound I finally took time to see your videos, thanks to the coronavirus. I wish I were sailing in my Ilur too...
love your videos - enjoy your new home
Thanks Roger - great video as ever. You make living in France look very attractive - I suspect my views about the situation here are similar to yours...!
Marvelous video. Love your adventures. I really admire your effort and appreciate your work in making these videos. Thanks and be well.
I've been watching your videos for a while and I hadn't realised that you had moved. Welcome to Brittany, I sincerely hope that you enjoy your life here. I suspect that it takes more than a lifetime to discover all the nooks and crannies of our coast, so plenty to do!
I still work, so I have to return to the UK quite often, as my business is located there, but I am spending just over half my time in Brittany. Or at least that is the intention. I decided, a year and a half ago, to get right of residency in France, as insurance against a possible future withdrawal of my right to live and work anywhere in Europe. My rights are therefore protected by the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement in perpetuity. Maybe this was an over-reaction. But I think not.
@@RogerRoving I can understand how you feel and why you took that decision. I used to live and work in the Bristol area, my daughters were born in the UK and in 2012, when we left to move back to Brittany, the eldest was heartbroken so we told her don't worry when you are old enough you can comeback easily if you want to. With hindsight, we were obviously wrong... Although I respect the UK right as a country to make democratic choices, I struggle to understand why you would want to rip off your citizens from their rights to move around freely!
Life's short and at this stage, we can do little about it, I really like your film about the St Malo area and the Rance river as this is where I learnt to sail and I thought your film reflected well the area. If I were a doctor I would prescribe lot of sailing to deal with the unecessary stress!
Good on ya Roger, civilized lunches from here on in.
I’ve hit that subscription button, because this, for me, is your best video yet! And from your ‘Outro’ (if that’s even a word I’m claiming it), I know exactly what you mean - La vita e Bella and one day the pendulum will swing back. Fair wind :)
Great video, one of your best. Thank you for sharing.
i love it, sound of and sailing
yeah, it should have been music of, but i saw it to late, now it’s a good laugh
Much better without the music. Love the videos. Just about to get a mirror dinghy so you are giving me plenty motivation to get out on the water. Many Thanks.
good you found your place! Bon chance!!
I want to live in Duarnenez! with 9 classes of wine bumper cars are great!
There were times we couldn't make it to a destination due tides and currents in our 39 foot boat unless we forced the issue with the engine. But what art is there is in that?
Hey Rodger a really appreciate the honesty of your videos in terms of sailing challenges presented, one comment I gotta make , how about some sort of traveler arrangement for the clew of your lug rig, looks like it might take some of the “excitement “ ie getting yanked overboard or throwing out your back for windward work, just a thought
Great video 👍
Home at last Roger? Mardis Gras like it used to be!
I loved this one. Well done mate.
brilliant vid roger , always love watching your new uploads
Roger I think this video in particular struck a chord, judging from all the comments. Keep up the good work, really love your videos. I also enjoyed the comment at the end. Watching Britain from Canada I keep wondering "what are they thinking??".
