The song is based on Richard Llewelyn's 1939 novel How Green Was My Valley?, about a small mining community in 19th-century Wales. The video is an epic short film, inspired both by the song's source material and Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice. A family must pit their desire to have a child against the knowledge that this would destroy their community. The hypnotic, hymnal quality of the song binds the video throughout, hinting at redemption while destruction takes place.

I from Ukraine, i was holding up with no crying all this time, untill i heard this song.. havemt read tge book yet, but tge words "how green was my valley" tearing me apart.. I wish everyone peace and blue sky and so everyones valley stays green...

To be fair, it's a lot easier to make a 6 minute short film in some ways than it is a full length feature. Especially with landscapes like this. Hell, I went to Iceland a couple years ago and some of the pictures I took look like a professional did them just because the scenery there is just that awe-inspiring.
The child does save the community, but maybe not in the way they expected or hoped for - because their language and songs and culture live on through him.

PietreADI maybe I could call you an immature part of the fan base for being ignorant and stuck up when alt-j are getting tons of attention, so stop crying and grow up you immature person.
@PietreADI and again on another positive comment I see you're spreading hatred in a world that doesn't need any more of that - go home you ignorant piece of crap
If the fanbase is so bad, why in the fuck do you choose to interact with them?? It takes effort to find this video. It takes effort to scroll down to the comments. It takes effort to write something as idiotic as you did. You seriously have abandonment issues. Alt-J was never a "cult group", there were a very talented undiscovered band. If anything, it sounds like you're the hipster 14 year old girl that wants their favorite band to have like 15 fans. This isn't the first time you've bitched in the comments either. You seem to hate mainstream so much and are so determined to call them mainstream, THEN LEAVE AND DON'T LISTEN TO THEIR MUSIC. IT'S THAT SIMPLE.
I don't usually comment on RUclips videos, but this visual work of art is just simply superb. While the setting is inspired by the novel How Green Was My Valley, the narrative is inspired by Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice, where a man offers God everything he has in order to avoid a worldwide apocalipsis. In the song's case, the little boy is taken to be the one thing that can stop this mass destruction (as far as I can understand). Nevertheless, the video/song philosophical depth also comes from the fact that "The valley" is presented as a lost paradise, a place where the boy (the survivor, probably because he was the only innocent person of his community) can return in order to search the true meaning of his life. Religion, art, aesthetics, music wrapped up in six and a half minutes. I'll just add that I was fucking moved to tears by this.

Not sure why they showed a burning thing coming down but it's about the Aberfan coal mine disaster where a pile of slag was left at the top of the hill for some reason and it did what gravity intended and crushed the town.

woOow... what a creation story... I teared up a bit. A lot of suffering for something so beautifully out of hand, out of our/their hands... great micro story.
my take on the story: set in a fictional world which I think loosely is based on the poor mining communities of the 60s in England. Natural disasters keep on occuring so they think a child will appease the heavens. Life is all good and happy. Parents die in a meteorite crash; the child is raised as an orphan and attends school in the city especially during a time of educational reform. He gets bullied for being a country boy. He gets older and he cannot forget his life before moving to the city; he cries because it was the 'greener' part of his life and he misses it. He's lonely so he sings the songs he was taught as a toddler. One day he runs away back to where he was born and finds no one there. The end.
that meteorite was definitely a bomb. a meteorite wouldn’t have that much of an impact, and the small mining community like that in so much poverty seems very much like whole country at war everything sucks mods
Luke Weller same but I think that the two had a baby to prevent something (war??) but it happened anyway and they actually fell in love and the boy grew up and idk...???
The couple didn't have a baby. The lady and another male did. I'm assuming he couldn't provide a baby. I thought I heard the radio mention a metor. I've no clue as well 😶 haha
Só queria ver o menino re-encontrando os pais, mas fiquei com a sensação de "how green was my valley" com infância perdida, pelamordedeus que tristeza :~ scr

It's going to take me at least a dozen views to figure out what all is going on in this video, but wow. This thing is amazing. What a gorgeous and touching work of art. Well done Alt-J and your collaborators.
I wasn't expecting less from them
It's like I need to be in a certain mood. Sometimes I just don't feel it, but then it's - ooooh, I can't believe how much their music understands mee! 😭
HELP. I am addicted to this.
woOow... what a creation story... I teared up a bit. A lot of suffering for something so beautifully out of hand, out of our/their hands... great micro story.
my take on the story:
set in a fictional world which I think loosely is based on the poor mining communities of the 60s in England. The end.
It's in WALES
that meteorite was definitely a bomb. a meteorite wouldn’t have that much of an impact, and the small mining community like that in so much poverty seems very much like whole country at war everything sucks mods
I never get tired of the way Alt-J sends me to a magical place ❤️❤️❤️
The only part I don't understand is the whole thing.
Luke Weller same but I think that the two had a baby to prevent something (war??) but it happened anyway and they actually fell in love and the boy grew up and idk...???
Luke Weller aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
The couple didn't have a baby. The lady and another male did. I'm assuming he couldn't provide a baby. I thought I heard the radio mention a metor.
I've no clue as well 😶 haha

PietreADI fuck you, just because you starting listening to alt j first doesn't make any one of us less fans. There's no point asserting superiority in such a petty thing, people like you are the reason we can't fucking progress as a peaceful society. Just shut your trap, stop complaining and listen to the fucking music
