    Hey, I'm so happy you guys make those videos, they are so helpful! I was wondering if you guys are maybe considering to make a video on stuff which is important for production modeling? Maybe even basic stuff like: should you scale/rotate in Object Mode, Freeze Transformations, what to consider when making UV's, what shells to put in one UDIM etc. Just basic stuff, because honestly they don't teach that stuff at uni (at least not at mine...) and even if I'm creating a really nice looking model I wouldn't know if the way I bevel the edges is right or if I should scale it differently etc. A video about important things for a production ready model would be so awesome :)

    I enjoy the industry talk, I've been training in 3D since 2002, initially, I was a 3D artist wanting to go into 3D modelling for animation. But went through another industry using 3D for event planning. I wanted a job at the time so I took it but I felt I wasted my time there instead of pursing 3D in Animations.

    I love F.N because there down to earth cool dudes!! I'm 34 and Im self educating myself on Zbrush. I'm still a very long way mastering it, but I'm sticking to it because I love it. Though, can only learning Zbrush is enough?? Or do I need to learn blender or Maya too!?!?!.
    Who's ever out there studying now, just take your time and know that if your working at it everyday, you will succeed.

    • @actionfighters
      @actionfighters 4 года назад +2

      If you want to get a job in the games or films industry, you will at some point need to learn maya or 3ds max. Part of the 3d pipeline for games will focus on retopology and UV mapping your highpoly model from zbrush. Zbrush can technically do those things, but it's a lot more intuitive to do it in Maya and a studio will always want to make things go faster and smoother

    • @winterramos4527
      @winterramos4527 4 года назад

      @@actionfighters thank you so much for answering the question. I'm thinking I wanna learn Maya for that reason, but before I actually learn Maya, I wanna stick with Zbrush for a while longer. Do you work in the industry?

  • @buda3d2007
    @buda3d2007 3 года назад +4

    Most studios have moved to training their employees with attached schools, you could always try this route, often they give you internships after graduation, however be aware many studio have an incestuous atmosphere so expect politics (like any place of work) but in particular studios tend to have a very established old boys club "us vs them" mentality, I'd often advise against working in these types of environments, but hey you got to start somewhere.

    How would you approach the industry if you are self-taught artist? Internships and other "greenlight" programs are usually for students, but as self-taught you probably don't have that status.

    • @giantswing3175
      @giantswing3175 6 лет назад +7

      Matej Kosovsky this, I'd love to see some answers to this other than "you cant" like, if you didn't had that opportunity in life, what's the best way to go into the industry if you have the necessary skills?

    • @FlippedNormals
      @FlippedNormals  6 лет назад +44

      So most people actually dont go through internships or graduate schemes. Going in as a junior is the normal way. If you're self-taught, I dont see that as being at a disadvantage when applying to be honest. The most important part is your reel and thats what the studios are looking at the most. If your reel is better than the other applicants, your chances are great :)
      To be honest, I'm confident that my own job opportunities would've been similar if I hadn't gone to school. If I didnt get the internship, I would've just got a junior position instead. The internship only lasted for 2 months, and after that I got a regular junior position based on my reel.

Should I quit blender to learn with "industry standard" software or is there a chance with blender?

      Hey! Dont worry too much about the level needed to get into the field now. You're starting years and years before most of the people who's your age now. I was also 15 when I started and when I got to university, I had a big advantage as I'd been working with 3D for ages. At this age, I'd recommend just trying out a couple of different tools and see what you like to do. I wouldnt necessarily lock down on exactly what you want to do just yet, as it's a huge field.
      Blender for sure is a really good tool, but once you get more serious about getting a job in the field, you'll most likely have to switch to Maya.
      Best of luck to you! If you keep working hard at your age, you'll be rocking this industry hard in a few years :)

      Ik its late but don't ignore blender as it will become a stronger tool later in game and VFX for its ability and price.And for Maya just do random stuff and look up tutorials like copying a image into 3D

      Horrible! Everyone in my class not already working in some capacity in the 3D, never got a job. The educational curriculum was HORRIBLE. 4 weeks for each class, barely enough time to cover anything. Most instructors advised to google everything, unwilling to teach. $75k, worthless degree as real regional accredited universities don't recognize the degree, so I cannot continue my education, e.g. get a masters in business, etc. When I went to a Gnomon meetup group, they were astonished that our Animation curriculum sped through the basic animation process stating, "You've got to learn to crawl before you can run, quite literally in animation." I of course laughed.
      I was also advised by LA Film school, sister to Fullshit, that they setup internships because they have a relationship with the area studios, and that's why THEIR curriculum is so tight and intensive, unlike Fullsail who doesn't support nor setup internships. In fact, when I went looking through the school I was advised that THEY had to approve it, but had nothing to do with internships. I graduated with honors, but it doesn't mean squat when you graduate without a reel. I've got hundreds of horror stories about that place as well as fellow students that have shared theirs with me. Many are whamboozled by the laser lights, or are the lucky few who are actually guided through and not told to google everything. Even their video tutorials are outdated. They are a for profit only school with little to no love unless you're a prodigy that they can ride on your coattails.
      I put everything into my projects and couldn't get answers from the very people I paid to teach me. Really sad.

      Sean Lake I got my Associates Degree in game art in 2016 and my bachelors in October 2018. Literally everything you just described is how I feel. I wanted to learn Environment Art. Instead I get tossed into half baked classes 4 weeks long that barely cover anything or expects you to already be at an advanced level. Constantly told to turn to google or RUclips. I leaned Maya on my own but I pretty much gave up on ever trying to pursue it further. I went through 4 years and I could barely use zbrush. I still don’t understand how to UV map any of my models. So mostly I just taught myself everything with udemy. Still don’t know what I’m doing. I still work on 3D in my spare time, but I’m still stuck ina shitty retail job with no real skills

    • @FlippedNormals

      This really depends on what kind of work you want. If you want to be an environmental artist, put environmental work in it. Same for characters, rigging, etc.
      I'd recommend that you keep your reel to a 1-1.5 minutes and not draw it out too far, so maybe 4 pieces or so. Quality over quantity here - and make sure that every piece shows a different skill set or a variation on a skillset. Doing 4 rocks with slight variations doesnt have much of a point.

    I don't know if you guys will reply to this but I am very confused about whether joining some school or university is a good path or one can also go on their own e.g practicing on their own by finding projects through net and all instead of going to some school because I have been doing some practice over 3D rendering and not very complex just renders like interior rendering or product rendering (that's all) and so with what I have been practicing is it enough to go through internships or do any jobs?

    • @FlippedNormals

      Hey! We have a long discussion on schools in the video below which you might find to be useful.
      ruclips.net/video/IktDqaS-ZV0/видео.html
      The key thing about going to school is to really avoid the debt trap. It's incredibly easy to get into $100,000 if youre not careful, as some of the schools, usually the ones who market the most, are pretty predatorial.
      If you go the self taught route, I'd recommend getting in touch with a local studio and then work your way up from there. Start maybe as an intern and work on your skills to get promoted. You can then jump to the bigger studios as you progress in your career.
      I hope this helps!

      FlippedNormals I have just learnt so far interior renders and I feel like that is of no worth and so I feel like I have nowhere to go....I want to go for animation and I have made some with Cinema 4D and yesterday I saw both of your videos one with 3D softwares and other with which school should one go to so I decided to stop using Cinema 4d and start using 3DS Max but still the principle remains same for animation right and I am still not very good to make animations smooth enough to make it realistic...like I might get one thing right e.g lighting but then my animation always suffers because it always feels to me something is bad and it always demotivates me so I am so very confused and scared at the same time like whether I will be able to do any jobs at all or not

    • @FlippedNormals

      Animation is one of these areas which unfortunately is incredibly hard to learn by yourself. If you want to become an animator, I do actually recommend going to a school - but not necessarily a physical one. There are some really fantastic online animation schools which are probably better than most traditional schools.
      Check out these three: Animation Mentor, AnimSchool and iAnimate. They are generally considered the best online schools for animation.
      In regards to the tool, for animation it's way more about the core principles and way less about the tool.
      Hope this helps! :)

    • @Deletethis1

      It depends on the job you want to do. Environment artists should know either Maya, Max, or Blender as their main software. Then on top of that they should learn to work with UE4, Photoshop, Substance Painter, and Zbrush. Character artists are similar but it also good for them to learn Marvelous Designer as well. But there are many other programs that can be useful to some people as well like Substance Designer and Houdini. I would pick what job you want to do and then look at/ask what people who already do this job for a living are using if you're not sure.

      A lot of places are switching to Blender Some smaller studios only use Maya. It doesn't matter which you choose. A lot of people pick blender because it's free. It's what I've always used and a lot of others in the industry do too. But it really is up to you. You can get a job using either one. For environments make sure that you show modularity in your environments. That is something I never did in my portfolio and it made it much more difficult for me. In the actual job you don't get to sit there making each asset by hand usually. Its all about designing things in a modular way and making detail with vertex painting/decals. Be sure to pick a style and go for that style. If you go sortve for realism but sortve stylized then you're going to be in a weird in between where you're not useful to either even if you're good. The best advice I can ever give you is that you're only as good as your references. Make sure you plan out what you want things to look like. And don't be afraid of getting critiques. Getting feedback and using it to make things better is how you will get better.
