YES. Classic. Now we know so much about these that you can reasonably sort them out. They were never built to be economical to run. I drive a 4.6L 2001 as a daily driver. I love it.
Thanks for the comment carl and for taking the time to watch the video, it all really depends we run a lot of diesel land rovers and they work well but the price of petrol today at around 1.80 a litre it’s not cheap ! Please like and subscribe for more

The cabin rattles in that car are something else though, mine was nowhere near that bad, sure a little bit on very rough roads but checking all clips, screws etc would probably improve it a lot. I had pretty much every interior panel off at one point or another and made sure everything was in place. Some tactical soft velcro also helps!
I seen your videos before, lovely classic you have, same colour as mine but mine is in a poor way, every month I'm buying a part towards its restoration ( it will be great to see it restored ). Id say you could be right regarding some stuff being lose but the camera is using a special mic so it picks up everything in great detail. ps thanks for watching the video and have a look at my other videos too, lots more land rover stuff and a mercedes SL, bmw etc you might like.

I love the P38. But I couldn't use it every day the fuel bill is just £$€! This one comes out every now and again! Fuel costs high, and smiles per mile are even higher!!

Not a classic like the icon 2 door RRC. Too complicated underneith, old electronics that can drive you mad. Dead cheap because of not the best reputation.
@@Coordinator61 Icon 2 door's are AMAZING! Ask me a few years ago and I would have agreed with you. Now, I feel the tide is turning. Good P38s will/ are becoming Classics.... I'm sure. I already love this old P38...!
@@GreenOval_Adventurers Its personal the P38 is more a big SUV than an icon. I know from experience that P38's can be a disaster on repairs. Ols school computers and air suspension. But for sure its a good 4x4.

Absolutely loving my MK02 4.6 Vogue, had them for about half a year and already swapped all the shocks etc so it's riding a lot better than it was! Love them to bits though
your right after years the air bags do need to be changed.
I work on Boeing Aircraft. Freakishly the beep and warnings are very similar to that found on 737, 747 etc...love it....though usually those beeps are not a good beep

Still miss my P38... It was my first introduction to the Range Rover driving experience... Since then i never went back. Yes my L322 TDV8 is a much more improved car... But the mix between a Classic and already much improved ride and comfort quality was beyond. Will buy again one soon. Thank you for this honest review! Nice places you have in Ireland...;) Maybe next time i need to push a little further!
I actually started driving an L322 RR back in 06 and as a youngster, it was something else. Didn't value the P38s or Classics back then. Now really love the simplicity of them. Heck, sometimes I now think an old TD6 is simple compared to the new ones! 100% recommend getting a nice P38, the prices are going one way and good ones are rare to come by. This one is tidy! 100% are lots of nice places off the beaten track to explore! Thanks for watching! 🙌
I have had a p38 since 2006. Both 4.6 . You will get between 16 mpg and 21 mpg. I agree, the plastics are not the best but neither of mine have rattled like that. Sounds like the rear quarter panel shelves are cracked or not clipped in. They are a sod to clip in. The rolling handling can be improved with replacement of bushes etc. Great to see such a fair and unbiased and decent review of these cars! Thanks ! Other benefit to these over an L322 is part prices, with P38 parts being noticeably cheaper than the L322 parts, many of which are BMW.
Thank you very much for your inputs, yes they are a great car and way ahead of themselves for the time, on a run i feel it would be economical enough so i think your right, do you use LPG or straight petrol?
@@GreenOval_Adventurers I just have straight petrol, buy I do not do any commuting in it. So it is only about 10,000 miles a year max/ That is the only reason I did not go with LPG.

97 RR HSE with 440,000kms..Ashcroft Torsen Bias front and back...well maintained,just done airbags and joints,bushings,shocks because I wanted too as opposed to have to...I'd love a new one but that kind of money is best spent on my retirement plans and the new RR technology is beyond me.
Well-maintained is the answer. New & old, they each have their own plus & minus points!
I’ve owned a 99 4.0 and a 4.6HSE 95. Both everyday cars. Loved them.
The key is service and maintenance by a true expert inc air suspension. Makes the world of difference.
Absolutely Clint. Like every product Land Rover or not, service is key. I laugh - I bought a few Land Rovers over the years with suspension trouble for pennies on the dollar. I remember one time purchasing a really clean P38 for 750 EUR (with faulty suspension, was on bump stops), before I even left the garage I had her back at normal road height! 😂
@@GreenOval_Adventurers from my experience if you have someone who understands EAS and can accurately diagnose the problem it’s not that expensive or difficult to fix. The problems come when standard mechanics just chase after the computer errors.
@@clintford9333 100% - The air suspension is so easily fixed (usually), once you understand the system. The problem is most mechanics don't have a clue.

@@GreenOval_AdventurersP38s do attract attention whether it's moving or standing still. I had a 99 for 5yrs and it brought me a lot of smiles per gallon.
You can leave one of the doors open until the SLS air tank fills up, and then it should raise to desired level pretty quick once you close the door. An open door stops the car moving up n down for safety reasons.
Exactly Richard! In this video, one of the doors was left ajar and thus, it didn't raise immediately. I always find it funny - people say the air suspension is useless, but I find it very handy when towing or off roading.
Same interior trim as mine. Same rattles and squeaks as well 😂

I've had a couple of range rover p38s and a couple of classics, I love my p38, but I have to say, mine does not rattle, well not like this video .

I agree Toby. They are undervalued at the moment! You'll have to share your secret about eliminating the rattles... Maybe it's the tyres? Hmmm

Quite possibly, I've always invested in good rubber on mine, better ride and usually outlast the cheaper stuff.

You may find that if its had many previous owners, somewhere along the line, someone has missed a few screws/clips when reassembling.
@@tobyc2173 I have General Grabber ATs on my L322. I am nearly sure there are good tyres on this P38 aswell. I'll have to check...

I have to use my 1994 4.0 SE as a daily after the diff blew in my road car and to be honest it does the job as happily as any other car. It does run a lot less rattly than the vid car so maybe some loose trim? 14.5 mpg is not brilliant but for the £1000 I paid for it years ago it's running costs is less than buying a new car and keeping it so it's a trade off.
100% - plus it's likely now increasing in value (depending on the condition)... so all in all, it's not as bad as the MPG suggests in terms of total running costs... This RR is currently stored for the winter and when the summer comes I'll get her out - cleaned, and all the rattles sorted. That's the plan!
My 2.5 is making more then 200hp and it's fine and have great fuel mileage.
yes the diesel is a lot more economical but as a future classic I feel petrol is the way to go as there will be a massive move away from diesel, ( everyday diesel is the way to go ) but also the petrol has a lot more sense of occasion about it and in the future when everything is electric etc it will be totally different and enjoyable.

I had a P38 Autobiography, previously owned by one of the Sheikhs, it was like a gentleman's club on wheels. Your P38 is shaking a LOT, did they swap out the air suspension for coils??
It's still on AIR. However, it needs the suspension servicing. Hopefully that should help! Good luck with your P38!
The P38 was a few years ago, I really did like it, I bought the next gen RR after that (which is probably the best RR ever made) but it seemed smaller and a bit cramped compared to the P38. I currently have a LR3 (Discovery 3) which is the most practical Land Rover ever, as comfortable as a RR but so much room inside. @@GreenOval_Adventurers
Yes, the L322 is the best RR. But each has its own advantages/ disadvantages... I do like the L405, and I have not yet driven the latest model. My wife also has a Disco 3. I actually uploaded a video on it and you've reminded me -- I'm due to upload an update video soon.
I have a Range Rover, year 2000, V8, 4.6 HSE, with a defect that limits the speed to 55km/h, what could cause this problem?
It could be a warning about the air suspension. Is it working correctly on air?
..EAS fault will cause such limit (on dash)..usually will go on to bump stops, or high mode with all height indicators illuminated..
Was it the crank position sensor?
Mine doesn't rattle ... stuff has been removed and not been put back correctly
I don't run it daily but is a "daily " car .. averages about 22mpg and have seen 25mpg on a run . 4.6 Thor 2001
That's crazy good MPG. There must be something slightly amiss with my one. Hoping to take her for a spin soon (she's been garaged for the past 6 months). Also, I'm looking forward to completely restoring her.
@@GreenOval_Adventurers change the ecu coolant temp sender ... it's the choke control .. I flog them quite regularly for a lot of cars that use the same sensor. I do cheat a bit as well.... I run 235 tyres (swapped from the 255 original on my 2001 car) and I run a lot of pressure ... 42psi.... doesn't appear to affect handling and smaller width seems to help with turn in. However it may be possible that I'll end up buying tyres more regularly. I don't think so though. They tyres cost £240 delivered and I did 1700 mile run from Thurso to Norfolk and back, That's when I saw the 25 but traffic jam knocked it back somewhat and struggled to recover the lost mpg as after Leeds .. there were a lot of cold starts
Now that you mention it, I don't believe she's been displaying the correct engine temps on the dash. I went on to eBay and ordered a sensor this AM. Let's see if it solves the problem. I'm quietly confident.
No Diff locks? No Low Range T-case just low Range for the transmission?
No diff lock as LR at the time when electronic. The P38 does have low range though!

..im 2nd owner of 1997 HSE 4.6..i have it past 15 years and keep going...i have crossed entire south east asia with it, no issues whatsoever ..probably ill not do this if i read all horror stories prior actual trips..everything is stock, cushion is original and there is no squeaky plastic sounds at all..its time to sand blast rims, and other than that, truck look fantastic..
Thank you! It's wonderful to hear positive stories like yours. These really are amazing vehicles. I had older P38s when I was younger and didn't really appreciate them. Now I value them. This vehicle is now at the mechanics getting work done, including a service amongst other things. Do you have a picture of your Range Rover?
