The problem with the series is that it's now episodic rather than serialized, it all started with Old School with Greg even directly acknowledging that he's been in middle school forever (being in ninth grade which is usually in high school; although arguably it's alluded to that ninth grade already has been established there since Greg was trying to impress 9th grader Jordan in Ugly Truth). There are way too many things that lead up to the status quo being god; them staying in the same neighborhood and having the same friends feels alienating as people should grow to meet new people and have strong relationships.
For me, the main issue I had with Double Down was that the main story constantly felt like it was changing, and there was no consistent storyline being told. I definitely agree that the last couple of books have been upgrades.
So you don’t like the book because it’s too unrealistic? ugly truth cabin fever long haul meltdown wrecking ball diper overlode no brainer I thought it was known the series wasnt meant to be that relastic (despite it being realistic fiction :0 ) You said that it’s back to back unlucky stuff, but that’s what diary of a wimpy kid is. Then your upset that there happy at the end and that’s also unrealistic. What do you want from this book?
His point is that despite some of the older books having unrealistic moments, the books can be something that you can relate to, which Deepend strays away from. (I mean just look at the ending) Also, its clear that Miditz just wants a more interesting story, than your typical tired trope of doawk vacation books.

I would say that Double Down was the book where the series really jumped the shark, but it has improved slightly with the last couple of books.
