I’ve been growing locs for 13 years. I told my loctition last year that I wanted to semi-freeform. She said, “if you do that I will charge you more if you need a retwist.” That scared me and I kept going. Now with Covid, I’m doing my own hair and not retwisting. I’m feeling such freedom.
If anyone tells you that you need to get your hair retwisted every 2 weeks immediately stop going to them.
I get my loks done every 8-10 months , mine are very thick and healthy, i have never experienced any poppin or thinning , im goin on 7 years , protect your 👑

it IS spiritual, and sometimes I forget that my hair is a reflection of my overall physical and mental health....plus a lot of us have to grow out of some of the internalized white beauty standards and be creative and really natural

Ive had locs for 9 years, never had it "fixed" or retwister or nothing. Never put any products in it (except for washing with Dr. Bronners 1-2 times a month), never palmrolled - all of this for 8 years. Until last year, I did the big mistake of changing my washing routine. I purchased expensive, fancy "dreadlock products" and a loc conditioner, and I did this routine once a week. I also started twisting them every day really tight with oil so there would be no baby hairs sticking out. I was obsessed with always looking neat because my boyfriend at the time told me his family thought locs were dirty looking, and that they probably wouldn't accept me. I also pulled my locs back really hard to give myself a face lift hahah. So my roots started thinning out, I could see signs of traction alopecia, my scalp would hurt all day long, and I got really bad dandruff. Now I've stopped doing all that, Ive gone back to dr bronners tea tree shampoo 1 time a month, and I've dumped the man who didn't love me for who I was. My locs are now 30-32 inches. :)
Another sad thing is now ppl want their locs to look like “good hair🤦🏽♀️”. Locs have become so trendy and ppl want good hair locs & that’s not the right way to do it. Very sad😤 The best part about having locs is every hair texture and seeing the different ways they loc. We have such beautiful hair! From loose waves to kinky coils! We gotta learn to love ourselves more!

My hair was weirding out and I went to a "loctician" for advice I said I was thinking to free form she was appalled ....she interlocked my hair, first time I ever had that done and she began cutting off my two headed dragons saying it would look so much better ....i told her I never had a scissor to my head...2 days after a whole loc came out..i asked her about she said she could repair it...i never went back ..she saw me on the street and said my hair is looking nice why didn't I come back to her to repair my loc....im telling you...i refuse to be her money supply...

My father had free form locks and when I started balding and cut my locks he said we don’t wear locks for fashion. He said “the elderly white woman with one big lock on her head is just as beautiful as the man with 50 locks or 7 locks. We wear locks for pride.” Btw: my father was Native American. Go figure
I just did mine own loc's two months ago. I am so happy that I found Ms. Yannie this early in my journey. Thank you for your information on how to care for your loc's. I must admit I was heading down this road of trying to keep it "neat". I am watching and learning with each video.

thank god i found this channel over a year ago. Havent gotten a retwist at a salon since December 2017. My 'loctitian' told me to come back to her every 2 weeks. But i researched online and found yannie and others who said to just let your hair live. Who knows how bad that would've been for my head if i listened to her.

Yannie is right. I hve fabulous locs that I wash and twist myself only like twice a year maybe 3 times a year. I may jus wet it with water only if it's a hot day. I'm trini and I stop caring about neatness when my hair was shoulder length but now it's on my buttocks. I do admit that I hve one or two kinda thin locs but I use only castor oil or rose water and I'm happy. ✌🏽

Yannie i had the same problem. I was neet twisting my locs often. My hair got thin, I listen to you and stop . Also i was stressed out, Im dealing with that, my hair is growing back. Listen to her she know what she is talking about. Peace and Blessings

I am a woman so I like my locs clean styled and neat I go every 6 to 8 weeks I keep my style up until at least 1 week prior to retwisting and my locs have gotten so full and thick its different for everybody where you live the climate in your state your diet your habits if your taking medications there are so many factors that play a role in thinning locs not just washing and retwisting often I think thats a factor but not a huge one and my family has had locs for close to 10 years now
What does being a woman have to do with clean styled and neat locs?
At one time I was trimming my fuzzies, yet since following you I stopped. I started to see a difference. I allow the new growth & fuzzies to go. I send people to you on RUclips & Facebook for real information for locs.

My mom loves it when I freshly retwist my hair but I LOVE what I call the"relaxed" look. I feel so lovely and free with my frizz , I never retwist before 3 months

When I first started my locs I was going every three weeks then I had to think a retwist doesn't last long why am I spending this money so I wash it myself and get a retwist every few months the longest was 8 months before I got a retwist once I stop going to get my retwist my hair often I realize how much thicker my locs are yeah I do get comments like oh girl you need to go get your dreads done but I just ignore the comments

@@Breakingthebond You "pop" them. As in just pull the apart at the root. And wrap the excess hair around the loc loosely if you want it to be slightly neater.

You can do a retwist every 6 months, a youtuber on here retwists her son's hair 1 a year, and their's are thick
When I first started my locs, I got my hair retwisted every 2-3 weeks for an entire year. Thankfully, my hair is pretty resilient and 7 years later, I’ve suffered no ill effects. Now I retwist once every 6 weeks.

Good perspective to everyone acting like you gotta rough it out to have longevity. Everybody hair ain’t the same nor or all loctionists made equal
I love Queen Yannie's perspective. She enlightens as she speaks. Everyone is different and everyone's environment is different. With this in mind everyone can not do the same things and get the same outcomes. But the one thing you can do that will always work with your body and in this case with your hair is FASTING. Giving your hair a break and giving your body a break will allow it to reset and do what it is naturally supposed to do. Whether it's monofasting, duofasting or triofasting (monofasting = applying/eating one substance to your stomach or hair, etc), keeping it extra simple allows your body/hair to rest and only function for the purpose of consuming 3 or less things and HEALING in between. Once you get everything on track and your body/hair has settled down and is back in alignment then you can build the body or hair that you want by incorporating Natural Quality FOODS for your body/hair. I have waist length sisterlocks. I know they are super manicured/structured compared to what Queen Yannie works with. I personally only wanted them for the grid. As far as upkeep, I wash every 3 or 4 months when I retighten. In between I actually put NOTHING on my hair. No oils or anything between washing/retightening I know this may be against what most people have been conditioned to think or do, but it works for me. My Washing regimen - a deep vitamin, mineral & oil conditioning diluted with distilled water and applied from a foam pump to minimize potential buildup let it sit for about 10 minutes, wash twice with a clarifying shampoo followed by an organic shampoo and rinse with ACV. I let my hair air dry or medium heat dry if I am short or time... I rarely if ever style my hair... I have super course thick hair, each strand is nearly flat like a ribbon which creates the super tight coils in c or z formation.
I stopped paying because my hair was being twisted too tight. I am so glad I stopped 3 months into my journey, I am looking forward to seeing his progress

I have thick hair and I was getting my hair done once every month and never experienced any thinning but now I’m going to go 3-4 months no retwist just to see if it makes a difference for my hair you’ve opened my eyes up too being more natural and healthy
I think I'm going to do the same, its waaay too expensive to be doing that every month. I'm just gonna let it go on it's own for a few months and shave the rest of my head. Going for dreads strictly on the top.
@@dren5810 I have hightop semi free form locs. My hair is 4C . I separate my hair every wash as they are very susceptible to forming into congos and i twist every 3 months. Let me tell you..having a high top has its upsides and downsides . The upside is versatility , when I want to look rasta - I let them hang . When I want to look clean cut and I have a fresh fade - I tie them up. The downside is if you don't know how to cut your own hair - you're left visiting the barber every 1 or two weeks. Which Is why I would suggest learning how to cut and taper your own sides if you don't know how to already.
Blkeclipse L I dont think it’s necessary to line your hair up every week maybe every two or more depending on the person I personally can go a month without a shape up
@@ALYXC7 yeah I typically get a line up and a blade fade so with my high top dreads now it's going to look good regardless. I wont have to do it for about a month too.
@@blkeclipsel2400 that's crazy, I go with a low bald fade and it lasts me about a month. I will learn how to do it on my own though, these retwists and cuts arent cheap Haha
Wow .. there are a lot of nasty comments, because some ppl.are saying don't retwist. It is really not that serious, they are just offering advice.. take it or leave it. No need for all the negativity over such a small thing.
I got my starters and got them retwisted once by the same person. He twisted them tight and used some kind of butters, so at my scalp they felt like little nobs when I laid down and it was irritating because I have a really sensitive scalp and it was hard to get to sleep at night. The one time I went to him to retwist my hair, he insisted that I come every what... 4 weeks? because my hair was matted at the root and he was focusing on giving me perfect squares again and ripped through my hair so much I felt like a traumatized kid with my mom doing my hair again.
I still struggle with an itchy scalp, although it's not as bad as it was last year, and just getting used to figuring out what works best for my hair, but I'm getting there. I'm getting fuzzy and I'm gonna take Yannie's advice about not over washing and avoid over twisting, since she's proven through her clients that what she knows works *well*.

I don't understand the point of growing locs only to pay someone else to maintain them. I personally feel locs are supposed to be a rebellion against conformity . Everyone should feel a sense of achievement , pride and appreciation of one's true self. Paying someone to style or tidy up your hair by pulling at your roots every few weeks seems contrary to the whole purpose .
Going natural is supposed to be much cheaper, healthier , and save more time. When it gets to the point you're spending more money on your head than when you went to the salon/barber - you're doing it wrong. Especially if you're losing hair !

Maybe you're not in the US but here in the states locs and natural black hair are only partially accepted within our own community and it certainly isn't the norm outside of it. There are still many black american women today who are conditioned to think its more attractive and more acceptable to spend hundreds If not thousands on volatile chemicals and/or wigs for their heads .
Then there is seeking employment in america. Let's be real - arriving to an interview for a decent job looking like Bob Marley instead of Will Smith is a gamble. My comment regarding rebels against conformity had nothing to do with how long locs have existed. It's knowing you will be judged by society due to the stigma behind locs that still exist in the US today and moving forward regardless.

I’ve had my dreads for over 12 yrs. I go quarterly. Never got my locs braided. Rarely ever tie them. I’m 6’1 and they hang to my butt.
I notice it also depends on your hair type. Sometimes the hair grows away and without maintenance the hair sheds and the loc can thin. But... For some it isn't an issue and freeforming is a good option. For me I do what works and my hair is growing and full after washing and retwisting as needed.
I use to get so offended when locticians give me their cards in the street, I'm not sitting in your chair for you to twist my hair and put pressure and stress on my roots. How do anybody think that's healthy.. And these people not washing their dreads and making videos off the first wash in under a year lol..

I so enjoy Yannie's videos. When I started my loc journey in July of 2018 I watched multiple of her videos before I did it. I've been natural for 12 years but didn't decide to loc u till last year. I've taken all she says to heart. I've not interlocked yet, I'm waiting until my anniversary date, but while I'm waiting, I've been searching for someone in my town to maintain my locs. EVERYONE USES BEES WAX. I tell them no that's bad, not good for their clients. They have no clue. In going to research more on interlocking and do our myself and refer to Yannie's videos.
Try a sisterlock consultant...i go to a lovely lady who is experienced 15yrs. I have about 100-120 locs. She is gentle and takes about 2hrs. I find traditional loctitian always put products on the hair.
So thankful for you. Gratitude for sharing the love and blessing us up with knowledge. This is confirmation for me to stay the course.

When i started i was gong every three weeks now i go probably eight to twelve weeks depending on how i am looking. I don’t wash it my self yet because i am only 9 months in. Shalom to the elders! My locks are almost 2yrs old, and get negative comments from other about not keeping my roots twisted. I’m now combining my locks💗💗💗 and now only use shampoo and oils!!!
I retwist 3 times a year and have 4 months between each session which give me a good 1.25 inches of new growth since my hair hate locking nature and need to look somewhat presentable for my job. So far I've had no problems doing it this way

My first set of locs were trial & error I did everything from dying to always retwisting & styles straining my hair. Now I’m on my 2nd set & When I started them I got retwisted once a month until I hit 1 year then it was once every 2 months until 2 years then once every 3 months until I hit 3 years then I combined them like two strands & once I hit 4 years which I’m at now I don’t do retwists anymore I wait every 4-6 months and do the rubber band method now I have thick beautiful locs that everyone always compliments asking how I did them & I now only have 38 locs when I started with 152

Free form for me. I do no twisting of any kind. Wash my hair with hot water and seal with cold. Sometimes I spray 50/50 brags apple cider vinegar and let sit for 5 minutes and rinse. That it

I get irritated when my locs are not neat.. Based on my job they are already trying to ban locs in certain places so dont give them a reason to actually do it. But i get my hair retwisted every 6 to 8 weeks..

That’s why I tell my stylist not to retwist after washing & conditioning. I wait at least three months before getting it twisted. But it sounds like I need to wait longer.

My wife started locs a year ago. I keep telling her that she needs to stop going to the beautician every 6 weeks for retightenwd because its harming her hair. She always get mad and say its my money. So the countdown begins til she have to cut it.

My mom would always tell me to retwist my hair but hahahaha I hated retwisting it and I almost never did, and my hair is thick and beautiful, now my mom isn't retwisting for a while and allowing the new growth to come back.
I've had locs for 10 years now and they're down to my waist. Only a handful of times has somebody else maintained mine. I usually tighten them up every 4-6 months. Just whenever I feel the need. They're still pretty thick and healthy. I'm still learning new stuff about keeping them that way though.

Yes I've had the same issue, but for opposite reason. My hair didn't thin from retwisting too often. Mine started thinning from going too long without retwisting. My hair was fine when I'd retwist every 6-8 weeks. I foolishly let someone talk me into going 9 months without maintenance, and when I attempted to retwist at that point, they were matted together severely. My hair started to thin and pop as I tried to separate them. I was able to reattach them successfully tho, and I've started back twisting once every 2 months. They are uniform and hang all the way down to my ass now! Lol 😂 #ElevenYearsOfGrowth
@@ghostwriter3809 Yes, with fine texture hair, too little maintenance can be bad since the hair sheds and you have no more hair connected the loc because the hair grows away from it. It's all depending on hair type of course. At the end of the day we must do what works for us.

I think it's a Black American thing.America has so many Black hair care stylist and they're missing out on money for retwisting and hair products.The stylist don't want people, especially women,to go free form and natural,that leads to reduced income for them and the industry.
I'm experiencing this currently, I went 9 months without retwisting my hair after the first year of growing them out. The 9 months led into my second year approximately which is current day. After the 9 months of letting my locs grow out naturally I retwisted my hair 2-3 times within 2 months apart from each other and have a few locs thining at the root like the gentlemen in the video. Thankfully my locs arent that long, they are still above my jaw line so I dont need to worry about the weight causing my locs to fall out. The root is so thin any tugging can cause it to easily rip tho, so now I'm back to letting it grow naturally to fix the problem.
I'm semi-free form. Started with two stand twist 6 yrs ago, and never did a retwist ever. My locs are very thick and healthy and strong...I have about 33.
