She is RIGHT! Spraying that water in your hair gives it a slight odor. It can be a faint smell or a strong one. I just started leaving my hair alone, applying oil to my SCALP when it feels dry and just running my fingers through my hair with my hands lightly oiled refreshes them. I only wash my hair about every 6-8 weeks. I don't use gel anymore. I retwist with foaming setting lotion to avoid build up. Locs are meant to be low maintenance and yall just be doing too much lol

Experience is the best teacher, ive been locd for 17 years and theseare my fourth set of locs that are now seven yrs old ans the one thing i did differently this time is wet my hair every morning, not washing it with sops or drenching it just, spraying it with warm and sometimes cool water on hot days and my hair is thicker, healthier and thriving so i dont know why are telling people not to use water, natural hair loves water, it still locs, it wont not loc just bcaz of a bit of water bcaz our hair isnaturally dry, in an hour its dry again but looks better after spraying water like a plant that was watered in the morning, green, healthy, standing enjoying the sun. When you put water on your hair it looks much better, that is a fact

You are right. I had been spraying my hair with tap water and using oil. My hair was like straw. I went back to Rose Water/vegetable glycerin and a light Avocado oil and the moisture returned. I also went back to wearing a silk scarf went not going out and to bed. It has made a world of difference. I do wash my hair every other week because I have scalp issues when I don’t. I haven’t had a retwist in close to a year.

I think this is a case of different strokes for different folks. Our hair is just like a plant & needs water to flourish. In the beginning stages with both sets of my locs, watering my hair every 2-3 days is what helped my hair loc up so quick. By the 10th/11th month I was fully locked. With my first set, I free formed them & would completely soak my hair in the shower every other day. I would also spray my hair with a mix of aloe vera & distilled water that I infused with rosemary & cloves. I washed my hair once a week with raw African black soap & did an acv rinse once a month. The one time I did notice a smell was when I washed my hair late in the day & didn’t allow my hair to dry properly before going to sleep. But once I washed again, the smell was gone & I learned to only soak my hair early in the morning. I never had any other issues. My locs were super thick and healthy! So if u have a smell in your locs it’s either bc u have a build up of dirt & products in your hair or ur not allowing them to dry properly! I just started my 2nd set 3.5 weeks ago with 2 strand twists & have been soaking my hair every 2 days.. not one smell 🤷‍♀️ I don’t use any oils or products other than homemade hair teas, a black soap bar & aloe Vera.

Too each their own. I wet my hair daily and never experience the odor in any kind, no mold/mildew smell or nun. but i also follow it up with oiling my scalp to trap moisture. If your hair stink,it's because they scalp isnt washed or not washed properly and thats dirt from how long ago your really smelling

everyone says water your hair daily. It’s just like a plant… keep in mind not all plants need water everyday. Some plants only need water once a month or once every two months. I noticed when I stopped spraying my hair with water everyday, my hair started to feel soft and healthy. Everyone’s hair isn’t the same. What works for one person may not work for you. Yeeeeaaaa to each their own. Hard water is known to dry out hair bc of the chemicals they use to treat and process it, and your diet plays a part in your hair as far as texture and smell as well. But water over all is not an enemy to your hair or skin. Just find what agrees with you.

  • @kynaeunique7414

Guys, To combat smell 1. Make sure your locs are COMPLETELY DRY and 2. use distilled water and essential peppermint oil in a spray bottle. Peppermint has anti fungal properties and will help fight the bacteria that is causing the smell. If it’s gotten as bad as to stink though you might want to detox first.
✨Also bonus tip, it works great to relive headaches, pain, itchiness, soreness, cold symptoms and can act as a deodorant. I usually rub a little on my underarms after a shower before bed and use a aluminum free deodorant during the day. Stay great everyone🤎

You’re right about making sure your hair is completely dry, especially before wearing a scarf, or going to sleep with it covered... also, If your scalp sweats at night, I wouldn’t suggest wearing a scarf like everyone strongly advises, after a week you’ll develop a scent... a satin/or silk pillowcase does the trick for me; I pin a large silk scarf over my pillow.✌🏾

My daughter had, what sounds like the same issue you have, with your thyroid. She was on the same medication. They said she would have to be on the pill for the rest of her life. She’s 31 and special needs, high functioning. I took her off of all caffeine. We dialed back as far as we could on white processed sugar and basically changed her diet and how she moves throughout the day. The Graves caused her to drop a load of weight too fast. She was on meds for 6 months and is now med free. It could be something as simple as something you may be eating. I don’t care what they say, caffeine is not good and all the sugar from various spots was creating all kinds of havoc. Good luck. Be well and stay safe. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. 💜

Get the guts from the aloe plant.(the gel) place it in the blender with a tad bit of water. Blend until it’s extremely frothy. Pour in a strainer ( it takes a while) let the aloe water flow through slowly. Place in a spray bottle and store in the refrigerator with the spout turned off ( it will leak out) spray in hair rubbing to distribute evenly. You can add lavender oil or a carrier that’s good for your hair.

Since December 2020, I have only used rose water and vitamin E as you suggested at my first session with you and Jimmy and it has made a world of difference with the moisture level in my locs. In addition, I have been drinking 3 liters of spring water a day and that has also increased the moisture level in my body and migrated to my locs. I enjoy your videos because they are educational, as well as, entertaining. I hope to be able to book an appointment during your next cycle in New Jersey, as I have a newly diagnosed condition known as ‘drop foot’ which affects the nerves in my back and I was just fitted with a leg brace to assist me with walking. I’m not comfortable with it yet and am afraid of falling at this time. When you and Jimmy return to NJ, with the assistance of physical therapy, I should be able to book and attend a loc session. Please know that you are in my prayers and I know your health will improve through the gifted hands of your specialist and the well wishes of your family and friends. Your attention to my locs has made a world of difference with their current condition that allows me to skip a session and control with the regimen that you outlined for me since December 2020. I will have to wash my scalp in March only because I have been very active and I was sweating a lot. From the bottom of my heart, I’m very thankful that I found you and Jimmy to bless my locs .

I spray my scalp will aloe Vera juice, in the winter months especially, then massage my oil into my scalp. Then, don’t be mad, I brush down from my scalp to the end of the loc to make sure I’m spreading the oil more evenly without having to spray directly onto the loc. I do this every other Friday depending on how my scalp feels. I wash once a month. I workout regularly so once a month minimum for washing is necessary. My hair and scalp are loving me right now with this regimen.

I use a small amount of aloe vera juice mixed with water in a spray bottle as a moisturizer for my locs. I found that adding one drop of an essential oil like tea tree or peppermint helps the mixture last longer and prevents mold/bacteria growth within the bottle. I also use this mixture for my loc maintenance. I’m not 100% sure but I think aloe vera juice is water soluble to some degree. I assume this because I’ve never experienced product build-up or flakiness with aloe Vera juice even when using it alone. Someone fact check me about that. The aloe vera juice I use is by the brand “Lily of the Desert” for anyone willing to try. Blessings :)

I used all of this when my hair was in protective styles for years. After the pandemic I decided to try something new. Getting to know my hair has been liberating .I did start making human hair locs myself so that I could use them if I wanted to dye my hair at the ends at some point as I don’t want to dye my own hair . I wear a hat to protect them from odours when working instead of head wraps. As I have always had long hair having it short has been a struggle but watching it change and grow has been worth it .I wash every two weeks to refresh and use flax seed t retwist this is great as it makes your hair so sot and can be revived when I spray with rose water.Your videos are great and I learn so much from them.whenever I feel frustrated I put one on.Thanks O

That's why rose water works, it is rose essential oil combined with steam distilled water through the distillation process to produce the essential oil. It can also be deionized water its the same thing. However, water alone CANNOT fix dryness you are so right on that. Need oil to seal it. And you are correct on the damp smell

Filet and blend about a palm sized piece of aloe Vera with 16-20oz of rose water or Distilled water and a little bit of fresh lime juice. Strain and bottle, it's good for about 3-5 days outside the fridge, a solid 2 weeks in. I mainly use it for maintenance, as aloe tends to hold and protect, while also holding in natural moisture.
I feel like listening to your body is important; if your scalp is dry, oil it. If your scalp is to oily and built up, wash it. If your hair is growing slow and brittle, you need to DRINK more water and examine habits. In some cases, changing your diet can help to solve some hair and scalp conditions.

I have just started mixing rosewater with alo Vera juice a few drops of rosemary and tea tree oil. It has not left my hair feeling even more dry than it was when I started. But, I also put extra dark castor oil on my scalp after spraying my locs. I have been using the extra dark castor oil to assist with my scalp condition ( eczema). Previously, I would only use rosewater mixed with drops of whichever oil I want to add to moisturize my locs. And I normally would spray this after washing & drying my locs, and when my hair is feeling crunchy. But I tried the rosewater mixed with alo Vera juice ( not the gel ) to see if it will decrease crunchy hair syndrome during winter. So far, so good!!!

I do make an rosemary aloe water, I use rosemary and simmer and cool, strain and use the cool water to blend with the aloe gel from leaf. I do use a cheese cloth and strain mix four times to remove any pieces till liquid is clear and refrigerate. I do feel it helps my hair stay soft, but I can understand over watering and having a smell.

When it starts to feel crunchy i spray my scalp using a mist spray bottle so that there isn’t too much. Thanks for all of your tips. It is all very much appreciated! Peace

I love aloe Vera juice for my hair. I started using it prior to locking my hair up and I’ve been a fan for 7 years. I recommend it. I waver between rose water or aloe juice. For now I do have water, glycerin and oil in a spray bottle and that works just the same for me.

Aloe Vera juice shaken up with some jojoba oil. I love rose water but it costs a lot more for way less and it doesn’t seem to moisturize my hair like the aloe does.

Hi Yanni Happy Belated Birthday. I have sister loc and use rose water with jojoba oil. Have had my locs for 6 years. That was the best advice I took from your videos. Also try getting your rose water from the Indian stores. A lot cheaper than Amazon. Sending prayers to you.

Funny story, I was referred to watch you from a Facebook group, where I asked a question about a damp mildew smell coming from my locs.. and as I'm watching your video, you described what I was talking about to the tee.. But you know you have some that are ignorant and rather criticize then not to just say a word. But, I'm thinking the smell is coming from washing, styling and not fully drying out my hair. And throwing it right into a style. My hair is passed my mid back, and right by the base line of my behind...and I have that coolie, curly type hair. My locs are not too small nor too thick, but I have alot of hair similar to the client in this video but longer... I am most definitely going to be following you and I hope to learn some things.

I'm from Zimbabwe recently moved to UK and my hair has been suffering. I don't know what the problem is but it's dry and my locks aren't even trying to join up like they used to back home. I'll stop spraying the water immediately and figure something else out. For those using rose water and aloe water what are your mixtures that you use?
Anyone who is used to living in the colder climates could also leave me tips, I would appreciate it.
