- There! I said it! Platinum is the worst rank in Rocket League. In this video, I show you exactly why I think this. It's based on a discovery I had not too long ago. The imbalance of skill related to mechanics and positioning is the core reason why I believe this rank to be the worst.

Don't practice the flashy air stuff. But definitely use air roll-
Only mechanics. Once you get good at one mechanic, may it be powershots, ceiling shots, flicks, etc. Always try to do another one until you're good enough to hit diamond 3. Hitting champion is only a great milestone if you can hold your own in champion. Think of it like that.

@Alexis Doll that’s what we call a smurf. I garentee if someone can do that they have played long enough to naturally be better than plat. Also if you spend that much time on air control, your mechanics alone will bring you to diamond and through it.

it's like this even up in diamond. d3 peak here. some players are hitting dts and flip resets, others like me have absurdly good air dribbles, and then some manage to score goals while managing to be as consistent as a bronze. positioning really only helps in 3s. in 2s and 1s, you can just sit back :/

@@Reaper-qo8tn c1 here who was stuck in diamond for a while, I promise your air dribbles are not as good as you think. Turning off unlimited boost in freeplay and training did wonders for me.
Actually, I think the best way to describe Platinum is to say that it is a transitory period where people try their hardest at things that they can't do properly, or with huge mistakes. They start to try aerials with air rolls, they try to dribble, air dribble, wall plays and so on. But as they only experiment these (and so try their hardest to do it on every little occasion, making them ballchasers btw) they do it very badly, as we can see at the beginning of the video at around 1:40 .

This is pretty spot on aside from some people not ball chasing. I and my brother do our best to play rotations with our 3rd and work with our teammate. Plat is definitely the place where I started to actually dribble and try to fly off walls and the occasional ceiling.
Ok ig seems loke like plats back then when he was playing the plats in that match weren’t performing ariels and maybe now almost all plats are now getting better with their air dribbles so there has been a change in my opinion

I see platinums as players who are quite skilled, but in pursuit of mimicing Champions or Grand Champions they completely neglect basics. To put it simply a typical Platinum player is someone who will most of the time miss the ball in the air, miss simple balls, overcommitment and have no idea where teammates are on the field, but ocassionally given time are able to do super skilled stuff.

I'm in plat 2 and I swear every single teammate I have chases the ball and double-commits. So I just try to sit back and play defensively while they chase the ball around like kindergarten soccer.

Title is 100% true, I’m in diamond and occasionally I get a plat teammate and literally nothing but chasing and they don’t even try to take control of the ball
Man, platinum is strange, i am platinum and every match either i play against some people who can air drible, flip reset and a lot of mechanical stuff or i play against a silver who knows how to rotate
And most of the time the silver is the only teammate I can win with😂
going to be honest, champ 3 here, my entire time playing rocket league for maybe 1800 hours or so, i've seen a player with that level of raw mechanical skill maybe 5 or 6 times. usually air dribbles and flip resets even around my rank end up rolling in or barely passing as something intentional.

As a platinum player myself i do agree with this and admit to commiting some of these mistakes myself however i have encountered these mistakes in diamond (my peak rank)... so as much as i agree with this i dont believe this is a platinum problem by itself.

The reason that us plats randomly leave balls after we lose them is that we're used to having teammates breathing directly down our necks waiting for an opportunity to swoop in and take the ball for themselves. They are like vultures circling their dying prey
This annoys the shit out of me, honestly.
Players who, for some reason, feel the need to play 'backup' by sitting in your shadow and huffing your exhaust fumes. Then as soon as you've made a single touch on the ball they swoop in like "my turn now" to brainlessly pelt it into the general direction of the opponent's net, regardless of where they are on the map.
Like, for fuck sake, just let me make an actual play. You don't need to sit behind me 'incase I miss it'. Just go somewhere else and give me some space so I can pass the ball to you properly.

Ummm not sure if i understood what u r saying correctly. But, as a D3 player when my mate have the ball i will stay in good position for a pass or to get back in defense. But, if my mate lost control of the ball by any kind (fail dribble/air dribble, or missed) and the opponents r far enough i wont hesitate to take over the ball for my self

I'm a plat 1 and my mechanics are exactly as they should be for my rank, no overkill but also not Bad. I'm properly rotating and all that. I only found myself stuck because teammates won't rotate or because of my faulty Decision making and consistency in shots. The problem with that as my consistency and decisions become better is that I can't make up for mates missing rotations. I've had everything of teammates from taking the ball from me while dribbling to sitting in the net the whole match. 😂

Yes I dont understane how Wayton is suprissed that it took 18 seconds to get in the goal and that it was easily saved. That Platinium did not immediately react, when exepected opponent to challenge him and then Plats are not so experinced in the game to do so impressive mechnical stuff, so he just tried, while it was easily saved. By support of team Plats could do more impressive goals and in 1v1 Plats just need to get through that one opponent player and then there is nobody to defend the goal, so its free goal then.

The reason this happens is because most plats can’t dribble or flick so they just flip at the ball hoping it goes in. I learnt a bit of dribbling and I went from plat 1 to plat 3 over the weekend now I am trying to learn flicks and reach diamond

In plat, the winning strategy is to just take as many on target shots as you can. They don't have to be good shots, but if you just lob the ball at the goal, you'll probably win because people aren't good enough to rotate properly or consistently make saves.
It drives me absolutely crazy when I'm the third, and the second man puts NO PRESSURE on the other team, on the ball or off the ball. What a saves me when it goes in, even though I'm 1 v 3'ing on the defense. Just wild really, simply astounding.

@Tiberiu-Andrei To get out of plat, I stopped trying to learn air dribble and stuff, and I learned positioning (I learned positioning by experience) and dribbling and flicks(A few videos but mostly trial and error).
I hope the POS that what a saved me 50 times a few hours ago sees this. It's not my fault you straight up whiffed and I couldn't clean up your mess 4 fucking times.
Me being a plat for 2 seasons straight - I either hit shots like a GC or miss them like a bronze. There is no in between.

playing as a solo, climbing through plat, in my opinion in some cases it was easier for me to give the ball than fighting for it in their corner. it was just easier and more secure for me to block the attack.

The problem in plat is that we(I am one myself) are extremely inconsistent in our plays and the skill is indeed unbalanced. If I were in a position like the guys in the first game I'd also kinda suck at attacking because my plays come from improvising - If the ball is in the air in front of the net I go for it, but I'd not be able to set up such an shot

At such a low rank you don't need to setup shots. Just let them give you the ball, open nets are everywhere in plat.

I couldn't agree more. However, still part of the problem... But if I may... As a plat, these games happen maybe 1 out of 7 times, in 3's at least. And furthermore, this is moreso a shining example of the teammates I get. I'm not saying that I don't belong where I am, just saying I wish the whole plat rank was a bit more devoted to the game, and hungry for wins. The worst thing is when a team goes up by 2, even if it's only a minute and a half into the game, at least 1 teammate immediately wants to forfeit. It's pretty disheartening. Regardless though, he's not wrong... The truth is just a bit painful.

my friends and i were messing around in casual 3s and eventually in comp with only playing defense after we were ahead and it took like a whole minute for them to push up on us
They’re probably very confused over the fact that you didn’t hit the ball at any given chance
Came to the comments section to say this. Wayton's playstyle against these plats in the first half of the vid would have been interpreted as odd or even trolling, just constantly giving them a ball, zero offense, and having the entire team stay in net... That's probably why the enemy team gave the ball back to Wayton at one point, it's a way of communicating "c'mon let's just play the game". It is true that at Platinum most players don't understand the concept of maintaining possession of the ball. Most games consist of clears, centers, and shots.
yyou're absolutely right about that. plats dont know what to do with the ball when they are given space. I've been ranking up 3 divs from plat 1 to 3 just by playing slow and fake challenging. they can only chase!
@@tinasthemeyay I don't think its so much that they are asking them to play. Rather, I think it's just that plats score off of counter attacks a lot, often taking advantage of their opponents poor positioning. You can see why when you look at the shot the plats generated in the first clip. They failed the dribble and the shot. Quite clearly, these plats didn't have enough mechanical skill to generate a good shot without having a real counter attack.

@@amelsalkic2998 my default go-to game mode is solo queue casual 3s. I've gotten really good at adapting my style to my teammates. And I've won tourneys with my boys too cuz we have good chemistry. Like I said, my mechanics are trash but I consider myself a team player

Sometimes you match up against diamonds doing double taps and fast aerials, other times you face golds with a good history in tourneys, leading to a high MMR for them. I just recently got back to diamond MMR, and I 100% get carried in diamond tourneys cuz I'm still only plat 2
Everybodys like "I hate Wayton now" or stuff, but he just gave us a new strategie
Not only that but in the process revealed flaws in the plat strategy:
- not pushing when you have an advantage
- rolling the ball towards the net when attacking instead of giving it some height and speed
- not using your teammate
- overcommiting when going for more mechanical plays
- being out of position
To get into diamond I began working on centering the ball for my tm8 to score (even setting up self goals by the defense), patrolling mid field, and sniping shot after shot from midfield. It's impressive how something that simple can get you so far.

I found this encounter even in diamond tourneys people will have one guy sit in net and your teammates can’t dribble or power shot and will just give away possession lmao
me and my plat friend have this tactic where because he's better playing up, he stays up and then I stay back because I can defend.
I’ve been mainly training dribbling for this reason - I notice we have space, so I go for a dribble and I can’t set up my flick fast enough. That, or my teammate hits it off of my car

With my friend I used to play tournaments and we were rank gold, we used this strategy and it worked great. Beating people who were better mechanically then us. Me as a defender sometimes pushed tough not always sitting in the net.
I’m plat 3 and I can’t handle the inconsistency. I get bots and they get players that can flip reset

Platinum is such a frustrating rank, I'm not the most mechanical player but I have good game sense and I'm constantly screaming at my tv for someone to challenge. The amount of times I see people in plat either not go the ball at all or just send it down the field to the opponents as some kind of hail mary pass is just absurd
You really needed to say this on the day i reached platinum.
As I've played for 1 year and I'm still in plat, thanks for finally showing how insane plat lobby's really are. Its truly gonna be crazy in a few years just watch.

This used to happen to me all time, I'm diamond now but there were so many platinums that were just faster and more skilled in every way pulling off insane aerials.
This probably happens way more often in low plat. When you reach plat 2 div 3+ u notice how everyone plays smarter and better. Probably because the high plats are closer to diamond lvl skill and lower plats are closer to gold lvl skill (especially with the mmr increase).Now even in high plat people sometimes make mistakes but it's not as often as it might be in low plat.
Definitely agree. I’ve plateaued in plat for a while now going up and down the levels and there is a huge difference between low plats and high plats. It’s almost night and day different

Plat is so frustrating because people are good enough mechanically on offense kind of but nobody understands rotation and it's so hard to predict your teammates because every game is so unpredictable and solo queue is a mess

I pretty much instantly got out of plat once I started getting more consistent, in good moments they have the mechanics of a diamond but you need to do training packs until you aren’t letting in as many easy saves and missing as many aerials

I was stuck in plat for sooo long then I just suddenly jumped into diamond and had been stuck there forever then they did the more recent mmr adjustments, now I'm in Champ 1 probably stuck forever because I can barely do aerial consistently. It's like the original season Champs that are still playing, they were no better than today's diamonds. Crazy to see how much better lower ranks have gotten

i was hardstuck in gold 3 for 4 months straight, then finally reached plat 1 after my 3rd most stressful game defense-wise, and then watched this video ☠

This is what I did to get to d1, if my teammate went up I stayed back EVERY time, enemies would just pass me the ball back anyways

So, I can 100% confirm this strat. I realized early on that plat players tend to chase so I would just clear the ball every time it came into my area near net. One added bonus, you can become really good at long hard shots with time. This is effective until maybe diamond 1/2 but then rotation is a must.
As a plat, this is so accurate it hurts
