Hey, while I'm still watching the video, I'd like to say great work and thanks for shouting our name out - I'm an editor and writer over at Source Gaming! However, to be quite honest at least from my perspective, Super Mario War was more of like epicmartin7's passion project! If anything, I truly say most of the credit goes to him.
I remember playing this game way back in the day, when I first began modding and using my Wii for Homebrew. I originally learned it to simply play Project M, but I realized how deep the rabbit hole went, as and experimented and downloaded all sorts of games from then on. Super Mario War was one of them, I had downloaded it just to see what it was about, and my brothers and I were hooked after that, having a ton of laughs and good memories from it all. The game has popped into my head from time to time in the years since, hearing nothing about it, or any single RUclipsr talk about it. And here you are once again, coming in clutch, lol. Great video, and I had no idea of the sad backstory and passing of the creator, as someone who has struggled with depression throughout my life, that was upsettingly shocking news. May he rest in peace, and I hope this game continues to gain more than cult status and bigger support in his absence. Long live Super Mario War.
The CD-i Ganon section had me rolling, I love when people get this creative Also I have no source for this but who knows if Super Mario War ended up being an influence for Duck Game, considering some surface level similarities and equippable shoes that would let you stomp others just like in SMW EDIT: The Bomberman Generation mention was pretty cool (I also grew up with that one) but the item minigame for the winner of a game was a staple from almost every Bomberman game (I think it was starting from the DS games and on that it was axed). Atomic Bomberman had one that was a literal roulette, and I bet that there are some other few ones that also had a roulette as well.
Dude, i'm from Brasil and remember to love playing this game like 13years ago with friends the game was spread worldwide for sure, amazing job on the video it deserves to be on Netflix or some thing men, amazing job on reporting the history of the game congrats, you made my whole week :,,)

You just triggered some really good memories with this game in my modded Wii, I can't believe the ammount of investigation you put for this video Thank you
Hi everyone! I'm Hexelectron, the creator of the Super Cat Wars mod. I saw this video and I thought I'd like to remind you that SCW's development is still going well :P I mostly post updates on my Discord server for SCW, which you can find in my RUclips channel. And yes I'm composing some new tracks for the game with DonnieTheGuy and Wowymolly on my side.
I am one of those "low profile reviewers" who talked about the game ages ago and when I made the review I never really focused it on its rich history, just the overall gameplay, how much content it got and how easy it was to make your own skins and levels. Watching this review was really interesting because of that. I never knew that it was a remake of a DOS game, about the many ports, the new forum, the revivals actually going anywhere and, most unfortunately, the fact that the project was abandoned after one of the main devs passed away. Thank you so much for making this video, you made me want to play this old classic once again.
This video has so much passion and care put into it, amazing work! With this much passion, it feels like this video could restart the community once more!!
RUclips algorithm threw me this video today. One big question I want to know since I think it was never mention in this video... how did this game got under the Radar of Nintendo's Cease And Decease arms? esp with so many "ports" made for it and the amt of "nintendo assets" fans made. or nintendo don't touch fan games that are not base exactly on their games?

I think I'll throw my thoughts in here too. Super Mario War was from a time when C&Ds from Nintendo weren't really happening. It could be that info about takedowns didn't travel very much back then, but I don't remember things like the Pokemon fangame takedown or AM2R happening in the 2000's and early 2010's.

Going off from what people are saying about SMBX, there's not only been a ton of community made content like custom graphics and entire games made within SMBX, but there's been two new significant versions made in the past few years, SMBX2 which is the original SMBX but with lua support and tons of new features and SMBX38A which is a new version made from the ground up. I'd love to see you talk about these, especially with the lua and teascript support that lets you make entirely new enemies and custom scripts. Great video!

Man, seeing this was super nostalgic, I used to play this game for hours, both against CPUs and doing local multiplayer with my little brother. I even ended up making a few custom character skins of my own at the time (unfortunately I no longer have them) as well as custom music packs.
Very impressive video! I even saw some of my content in there 👀 It is definitely a remarkable game that still deserves recognition even decades later. I _was_ considering doing a totally not ambitious rewrite of the game myself, but since I already have other projects that'll remain as just an idea for a while...
Wow... I discovered it back then around 2008 (I think) and as my young self, I never realized it had a whole community nor how it's practically the 2nd to doom in terms of portability. It's a shame that it's become a lost gem, but I'm glad it's still known and still kicking. Know what? Think I'll go and play a few rounds again, for old time's sake. :')
So, I stumbled upon this video while browsing RUclips, and wow, I did not expect to actually be mentioned anywhere on RUclips, but there it was. Stomp Arena goes back to my college days. I spent many an hour in my dorm room working on it. You mention netplay being in a primitive state - that was one of the areas that I worked on. At the time, I only knew the basics of network programming, so it wasn't robust at all. It was based on UDP, so just one dropped packet could mean some serous desync in the gameplay, and I never figured out how to cleanly re-sync things. I learned a lot about programming while working on that project. Eventually, though, I just burned out on it. I'd be willing to answer any questions about the project if people want to. Also, I know I just created this channel today, so I might not seem legit, but if you'd like proof of who I am, I can try my best to prove it. I don't have access to my original e-mail, though, and I can't remember my exact password on the old forum, but I still have the old project around (although it has moved computers since it was created).
Do you really have stomp arena saved after all these years? I was trying to make an archive with all the smw files I could find and there was nothing related to stomp arena that didnt have dead links (as usual nowadays). Also just thank you for being a legend on the forums. Im way too young to be there at the time it was still alive, but looking at it now its obvious you were pretty great.
I played this so much as a kid in 2006. It was before they had that fancy menu I'm pretty sure. Spent lots of time in the level editor and playing multiplayer huddled around the keyboard. Good memories. Edit: Yep I was playing on 1.1. All these different game modes are new to me!
really admire the level of detail that you put into this video. i've watched a few of your other videos and can now say i'm officially a big fan and have subscribed, looking forward to more content!
Wow, I have never been this invested in the backstop of a fangame before, not even any of the countless Pokémon ones I like. Lol. This is certainly intriguing to me. :)
Nice video! I had heard Vinesauce mention Super Mario War while watching his content, and figured I’d look it up. Definitely going to download and try it out.
Holy shit I had no idea this was an actual thing! I had the old ass version way back in the day on a modded Xbox and haven’t thought about it in years, such good times. Time to check out the latest version!
Holy shit I remember this game, I played it when I was a kid and only recently, I started remembering a Mario game where you were fighting 3 other people trying to jump on them...
Man, what a blast this game was when I was a teen, and I always feel a bit bad whenever I end up forgetting about it, even if the memories usually do end up coming back relatively easily since, of all things, listening to music from DDR: Mario Mix tends to make me remember about it, since the trailer for v1.8 used music from it One thing that kinda hit me hard was hearing about Florian's death I mean, I'd known for a long time that the dude was Gone, I just never knew it was by his own hand At the very least, I hope his soul has been, and continues to be, in a good place, and I'll always be thankful to him and the rest of the team for putting together a game that made my high school years that little bit less awful
Imagine it being around 2006-2007. RUclips was just coming up and Flash was the hot new thing everyone and their mother was trying to build upon. I myself have been finding fangame after fangame all with new stuff I was eager to figure out on my own. A new mario game that had worlds I'd never seen before. New powers, new mechanics. All through these shady websites that honestly looking back, I'm ashamed of downloading from. But I had the time of my life finding a new mario game where I could start with freaky new powerups, a wall jumping mechanic that was honestly lackluster (that is, if it worked). But it was new, that was the point. New. But what I found afterwards was something special. You mentioned super mario war. That is how I started. Super mario war 1.6. The announcer was a part of the game as intended. But so many things were missing. A lot of powerups, no level editor (yet), no worlds no tourneys, just smw. So I started digging my claws into it and looked a little closer. I found the official release. 1.7. That's where I had most of my fun. It had a level editor that I made several levels on (including one with a name I'd rather not repeat, we'll get to that one). Not only did I find 1.7, I found the forum. Sprites that could be added, new secrets (which was then part of the 1.7 afe (april fools edition) of the game) and a shit ton of discussions. And then on youtube I found a video of another version of the game. The title of the video, trigger warning for those who are abused, was "Stomp mode rape". The name aside the level was pretty cool. With a lower, middle and upper section divided by color switch blocks. Every enemy in stomp mode collected in the small upper left corner of the map that could be released by pressing the button. Doing so would unleash hell. It was honestly, my favorite map. The version of smw it was played on wasn't even smw, it was ghw, ghost house war. A halloween version of the game. With all halloween mario themed sprites. Basically half the game, but the music, it just hit different now hearing it back. I have made so many memories with this game. All because some kid thought he would show his gratitude to a franchise I had long since fallen in love with. Now all that's left is bits and pieces from an honestly (I'll stop saying honestly I swear) truly great period in my life. I was immature then, but I can still appreciate my youth as I was still only a kid. So my message to you florian, you can rest easy knowing you've made my childhood an epic story of wonder and adventure small as it may have been. I wouldn't have had it any other way. Thanks for gifting the world such an amazing game. Rest in piece, you deserve more. Thanks for reading if you did. I do appreciate you taking time out of your day for what is basically a love letter to the dearly departed. Enjoy the rest of your day ^^
I'm pretty sure that's just the normal Yoshi's Island egg sprite, although, maybe it's had a bit of a palette change. also, not a cucco, it's a chicken from Harvest Moon.
I play this game everyday and I just wanted to know if someone made an video about it and I'm happy i searched it. also I was playing on version 1.7 and I realised it wasn't the latest version. thank you jonii for making this video.
I REMEMBER PLAYING THIS BACK IN LIKE 2007 AND FOR 2 YEARS I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND IT AGAIN! the closest I got to was super smash flash but I KNEW that it was not the game I played back then. I remember playing this at my parents office when I was young it was one of the only games the shitty old fat windows xp laptop could run besides the game where you beat up a big round guy and got money for it where you could then buy new weapons to torture him with (pretty dark but it was very cartoony). I can't wait to play this again. thank you so much! Very sad to hear the creator took his own life :( to many great people in this world go that way. He gave thousands of people fun and joy. What a legend. Rip Florian you goddamn legend. If heaven is real I'll thank him as soon as I see him when I pass

Im gonna try asking again if you have stomp arena, since i still dont have it in the archive.
I played this so much as a kid in 2006. It was before they had that fancy menu I'm pretty sure. Spent lots of time in the level editor and playing multiplayer huddled around the keyboard. Good memories.
Edit: Yep I was playing on 1.1. All these different game modes are new to me!
i remember playing this as a kid but didnt remember its name
thanks to this video now i am going to play it again and revive some good old memories 👍
I love this style of content, I’ll drop a comment and sub
What a fantastic video man, you're by far the most underrated youtuber right now. Keep it up bro, you'll hit it big!
R.I.P Florian Hufsky.
Moment of reverence for Florian. May his surviving loved ones find peace after their loss. :)
seeing everybody edits broke my heart
It was honestly too late before I found out it was fan-made 😂
I’m glad I found this video. Very informative and entertaining!
really admire the level of detail that you put into this video. i've watched a few of your other videos and can now say i'm officially a big fan and have subscribed, looking forward to more content!
Super Mario War is a fun game. I wish I had more friends to play it with.
bro i wish i had ANY friends to play it with
@@molnarbeton6596 I know your pain, bro.
Fell asleep while watching and dreamed with this game.
Yooo I remember this game, I got it from a flea market for my Xbox and absolutely loved it
I missed this game when i was younger. I remember seeing it online but never playing it. What a video. Sick Job.
I remember hearing about this game! Such a fun video on it, and a little piece of internet/gaming history! Thank you so much for making this! ^_^
Wow, I have never been this invested in the backstop of a fangame before, not even any of the countless Pokémon ones I like. Lol.
This is certainly intriguing to me. :)
Why did my phone autocorrect "backstory" to "backstop"?
I hate autocorrect. Lol.
Time to check out the latest version!
back then i used to play this game nonstop i sometimes edited the gfx as well and just overall good times
7:47 You can play as the butterfly from the MSN logo?!
I did not know this was so involved. I might try to play this soon
I used to play a variant of this on a homebrewed wii.
Good shit.
Holy shit I remember this game, I played it when I was a kid and only recently, I started remembering a Mario game where you were fighting 3 other people trying to jump on them...
Man, what a blast this game was when I was a teen, and I always feel a bit bad whenever I end up forgetting about it, even if the memories usually do end up coming back relatively easily since, of all things, listening to music from DDR: Mario Mix tends to make me remember about it, since the trailer for v1.8 used music from it
One thing that kinda hit me hard was hearing about Florian's death
I mean, I'd known for a long time that the dude was Gone, I just never knew it was by his own hand
At the very least, I hope his soul has been, and continues to be, in a good place, and I'll always be thankful to him and the rest of the team for putting together a game that made my high school years that little bit less awful
Enjoy the rest of your day ^^
War.
It brings so many together.
HOW Do YOU ONLY HAVE 590 SUBS. THIS QUALITY IS OUTSTANDING
i remember watching people play this game all the time it was amazing
I'm pretty sure that's just the normal Yoshi's Island egg sprite, although, maybe it's had a bit of a palette change.
also, not a cucco, it's a chicken from Harvest Moon.
holy shit i remember getting super Mario war when homebrewwing my wii for the first time. I didn't know like any of the history!
If heaven is real I'll thank him as soon as I see him when I pass
i remember randomly finding this game when i first hacked my Wii and i liked it. i had no idea it was this extensive of a background.
Oh my god, this was such a good video. I had a lot of fun watching! I can't wait for the next video.... ;)
I'm glad you enjoyed it, my man! I can't wait to see the next video myself. ;)
34:50 I just noticed that you have two songs playing at the same time in the background.
I played this as a kid, I forgot this existed. Thanks!
Playing this master piece since 2010
i love it im playing it on the psvita
Lol, your script / (and off script) comments had me cracking up.
Great video, I've never heard of this until today and now I actually want to go try it, I think I will. Thanks man! You got a new fan. Nice vids. I'll be watchin' more.
Yo I remember this game I used to watch tons of videos on the custom games on here when I was young and played flash versions so much nostalgia I got reminded from a qzec video this was part of my childhood
I remember my dad got this on our wii back in the day, it kept crashing but I always had a blast :)
I can't wait to see this channel blow up the way it deserves
TFW you enter the "comedy area" but your life has been a joke since birth :(
The real comedy area has been within you the whole time
How long until New Super Mario War?
The game that started a war against copyright
