Random story: I once saw Slick Rick perform twice in one day at different stages. One of the stages was a big main stage where the crowd is ~10-15 feet back. The other stage, the artist could actually reach out and touch the fans.
On the main stage Rick came out with his usual 20-30 chains on. On the smaller stage he came out with a single chain. Was almost like he was saying, "I aint letting you crazy bay area fucks rob me." 😂😂😂

Slick Rick is known for storytelling but what isn't really mentioned is his recording style. He is known for the "punch in" without us really knowing. A "punch in" is overlapping vocals. So he'd say a line and overlap the next at the end of the last sentence which would be impossible to perform live. I remember hearing songs like Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" as a kid and wonder how he sang his adlibs over himself. Not knowing The Beatles were doing that 20 years prior. Then to find out Slick Rick was a fan of The Beatles and even incorporated their tunes into his music under the hip hop worlds nose at the time is more interesting to know now then at the time. We didn't know that. We just thought it was dope.

The way he laid his vocals on this album, the intonations, the way he would overlap his vocals when his bars were too long. The interesting thing about Slick Rick, much like Tupac, his music predicted his fate. His song Children's Story spoke of a young person running from the cops while armed and crashing a car. Slick Rick shot at a cousin that attempted to extort him. He fled the scene, was chased by cops and crashed his car. On the same album (The Great Adventures of Slick Rick) there is a song called THE MOMENT I FEARED where he ultimately ends up incarcerated and sexually assaulted. Many years later after his stint in prison, Slick Rick dropped what many consider his second classic album, The Art of Storytelling (there were two lackluster albums released while he was in prison). On The Art of Storytelling there is a song called ADULTS ONLY. He raps about his love of anal sex. I surmise that the moment Slick Rick feared happened in prison.
