"We're sitting in the front room, talking, and his phone rings, and he's like, 'Nah, man,' and you can see something's happening on the other line. And then he gets on the phone again, and he calls his wife and checks on his children. And then he got off the phone and he told me that one of his friends' kid was in a house fire. And I'm like, 'Aw, man, I'm so sorry to hear that, we can do this another time." And he says, nah, and he sat in the corner, and he wrote this song about the whole experience. He took this very sad experience and [made] this powerful art. It almost had me embarrassed about my verse." - Jay Z book "Decoded" pg 104
Oh, you're requesting a song! I thought you were commenting on his verse. Someone requested a different Jay-Z song just now and I was checking if it was already on my list and I saw "Lyrical Exercise" and it dawned on me. 🤪 So it's def on my list.
Great song and great review. I hear you on how Scarface’s verse stood out, but on a nerdy technical rhyming scheme and word play level, Jay’s verse was masterful and on another level.
This particular album had a lot of great singles, especially "I Just Wanna Luv U" and "Change The Game," which I heard played all around campus non-stop when they first came out. As for Kanye and Jay-Z together, they did a whole album called "Watch the Throne," and their biggest hit from that was "N***as in Paris," which became so popular that when they did it in concert they would perform it 5 to 9 times back to back - and NO ONE would get tired of it! Definitely worth a reaction, even if you can't say the full title lol
Thanks, Harry! All 3 of those songs are on my list. Speaking of the N word, I was asking a Gen Z relative how he would rap along to songs without saying it. He said he used "ninja" instead. What are your thoughts about that? Should I use it or is it disrespectful?
@@ABoomerReacts Hmm, interesting question... that one may be worth doing a survey lol. I've heard a few Black content creators use it but I haven't seen other races try to use it. My feeling is since it's technically being used as a replacement word with the same meaning it may have the same feeling-tone as if you had used it, but I could be wrong. (Plus, I'm a fan of you saying "hmm hmm" instead.) As for the Kanye and Jay song, even though that's the title of the song, the line "N**as in Paris" is only used once by Kanye in the song. The actual "chorus" is "Ball so hard, motherf--kers wanna fine me."
Bro I'm 42 from Brooklyn NYC, I consider myself a hip hop specialist especially during the time frame that this song was created. Bro you are the Fu*king man you understand the music you can tell that you do appreciate the culture and art form. Keep up the great work I'm about to dive into your library and see how much Hov you cover b/c he is by far the most talented lyricist of that time.
there's a reason why Face is your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. Face is forte is his Emotional connection with the audience. Very few MCs have that power. It also helps he has a powerful voice as well. This was also Kanye's big break as a producer and what made Jay have him as in house producer for Roc-A-Fella. Then you know the rest... actually, it's way more into the story on how he had to fight to be taken serious as a rapper, but that's another story for another day.
When it comes to Scarface there ain't 2 many that can match his level lyric for lyric in a verse except for maybe Pac, Nas, and DMX in my opinion. Face is a legend
You should do Dinasty Intro, from this same album. Genius is absolutely required for this one, but I think it's one of the lyrical height of this genre. Shakespeare level.
When Kanye started out the sound was so fresh! I think you should get in to whole album reactions. This album was amazing. Kanye brought a totally new sound in 2001 and he was producing for everyone around that time. Keep em rollin hope all is well

You need to check out Money and the Power by Scarface he is very articulate and draws a picture with his words. Definitely a GOAT. Oh and for the record his fans call him Face not Scar lol
Scarface verse was TRUE he had one and then he got a call like he said in the song thats why his verse hit harder and im Jay all day and fk with beans more and before i knew face boy lost his kid i said his was better
You can hear the pain in Face’s voice. He is a legend and one of the greatest lyricist to ever live.

@@ABoomerReacts 😂 yes the whole song is a play on lyrically exercising. You’ll find it very clever.
Fantastic
Great job

I hear you. But the emotion of Scarface's verse stood out because I had just read the story about it.
If you like Scarface, check out his self titled song from 89' when he was with Geto Boys. I think it bangs for being back in the day.
Thanks! It is def on my list.

It's hard to quantify Scarface's greatness. I feel like if he's not at least in someone's top 20, it's because they haven't lived enough life yet.

Yes, I talk about Scarface's phone call in my video.
Scarface is top 5 dead or alive maybe even top 3
Scarface was the best on this track.
For me as pure lyricist it goes
Nas
Rakim
KRS1
Face
