      First of all love the show and I'm so thankful for all this great Mtb content.
      Lately I did a full service on my 160mm 2016 Rockshox Yari and changed the oil in the open bath damper according to the service manual . After the service the compression damper now takes 10 mm into the forks travel to engage. I used the recommended oil volume of 160ml but since the problem didn't existed before i ask myself if the previous owner used more than the recommended oil volume to get rid of the problem and if so can I top up the oil with no riscs?
      I'm thankful for your ideas.
      Greetings from Germany

      I'm building a bike for my son. I got a 96 KHS frame, a FOX fork and parts of an old shimano Alivio 3x7 groupset. The groupset is in ok shape in general but the chainring have seen better days. I can either replace the cranks with a new (used) crankset for 1x or get new chainrings and keep the 3x7 or keep the crankset and hack (bodge) a 1x. An option if I go 1x is to replace the cassette with a 11-34, the current one is 11-28. I realize going 1x7 will limit the gear range severely. What's you thoughts on this? My plan is to make the build fairly cheap and use the money for stuff like better tires. #AskGMBNTech

      #AskGMBNTech Hey Doddy. I'm thinking about getting into the mountian bike industry on the business and engineering side of things. But I feel like new game changing innovations in the industry are slowing exponentially. Bikes are so good now. As someone that has been in the sport for a long time and has witnessed the rising of all this amazing tech, where do you see the most room for new bike specific innovations?

    Two words... personal preference. What works for one person doesn’t work for another. Maxxis? Schwalbe? Continental? Rode ‘em all, all have their strengths and disadvantages. And remember, most of the pros have sponsorship deals.... you wanna pay me or give me free kit? I’ll use it and say it’s awesome. Bit like GMBN used to all ride Contis.... but now it’s Vittoria 🥱

    #AskGMBNTech Sincerely want to thank you for continually bringing it every week on the channel. Love the show! I live in Vermont USA and have to store my bikes in my heated basement for the winter. As bikes give way to skis as the snow piles up to 30+ inches for the winter. What is the best way to store my battery powered devices? IE: Garmin, lights ect... Should I keep them plugged in? Store them unplugged with full charge? Or drain the battery and recharge in spring? I know it's important to care for the battery and it's memory. Thank you for being the bike guru!

    • @johannesb.7568
      @johannesb.7568 4 года назад

      Nowadays most of the electronic devices are powered by Lithium Ion Batterys.
      For long term storage it's best to discharge them to there storage voltage. It's reached at about 60% charge.
      Then store your devices in a cool place like a basement or fridge.
      Just check the charge every month or so an an recharge the battery if it's charge is under 55%.
      Remember to charge the batterys only when there are back at room tempetature.
      If you do it like this you should have minimal capacity losses through the winter.
      Cheers

    #AskGMBNTech
    Suspension setup question:
    In my Giant Reign 2018, I have a RockShox Yari with 160mm travel, no volume reducers in the air chamber, rebound in the middle click (9 out of 18) and fully open compression knob (assuming is low speed compression as it's the only compression adjustment in this fork).
    I'm 83 kilograms, 34 years old, and (I believe) decent mountain biker. I'm doing decent drops and small/medium jumps in the bike parks. Nothing crazy, but not a beginner, either.
    When I set the sag on the fork to be (recommended?) 15-20% (around 85 PSI) the fork feels super stiff and I can feel the vibration in my hands. It also uses around 75% of the available travel in general.
    Since I don't have volume reducers, the only possibility to make it more comfortable was to lower the pressure (to 75 PSI) and it does indeed feels better and tracks the ground better while using around 95% of the available travel. However, the sag got around 30%.
    While I don't see a problem with the sag being 30% per se, I do feel the front of bike sits lower, and my overall position shifts forward a bit.
    How can I make the fork feel more subtle (less vibration) but supportive at the beginning of the stroke to keep a higher front end, while making the most out of the available travel?
    Would going down in pressure and closing compression a few clicks and, if needed, put some volume reducers be a solution?
    Thanks!

    • @juaneer
      @juaneer 4 года назад +1

      I think changing the damper cartridge to the Charger 2 would make a huge difference. The volume reducers only affect the way the compression damping ramps up as you get deeper into the travel.
      That being said, a friend of mine changed the air shaft on his RS Revelation to the revised 2021 model (and increased travel by 10mm) and said he felt more support at the beggining of the travel.

    So I've recently run (more or less accidentally) a double down front tire on my 29er Enduro bike and while the weight (+230g to a comparable tire with Exo casing) was not as noticable as you'd think, I felt the stiff casing and lack of compliance affected the riding comfort quite negatively. Personally I prefer just a little bit of squish with my front tire to take the edge off of sharp hits. Since it's typically the rear tire that gets beaten up, my suggestion is to run a heavier casing on the rear (DD or at least EXO+) and a lighter casing in the front. Good compromise?

    #askgmbntech Hi Doddy
    What is a good tire for grass?
    I'm a roadie who got into mountain biking thanks to GCN and GMBN, and because of lockdown rules in SE France where I live.
    What I like (and actually the only thing I can do right now) is explore all the little paths which are either dirt roads which have been abandoned decades ago, or what I call "boar paths", basically grassy singletrack in the forest.
    I don't mind being slowed by the grass, I get enough grip downhill, but what bugs me is when I have to go uphill in the grass (and a bit of dead leaves) I spin out, lose grip and have to dismount. I see tires advertised for rocky or muddy terrain but not for grass and undergrowth. Any suggestions.

    Hi Doddy, big thanks for great educational and entertaining content!
    Rear suspension question:
    I have a Horst-link rear suspension with 140 mm travel, and the shock uses only about two thirds of its stroke. In the horst link there is another mounting point for the shock. Mounting it there would reduce leverage ratio. I am considering doing just that, and removing a few spacers from the shock in order to compensate for the reduced leverage and keep the same 140 mm travel.
    Would you recommend doing that and is it generally advisable to use as much stroke of the shock as possible? Thanks!

    • @codermontage752
      @codermontage752 4 года назад

      Personally I would go with the ht however there are alot of things to take into consideration, for example ht are always better for learning how to handle a bike and getting the skills to ride fast and hard. I think you would appreciate a hardcore ht(ofc it depends on what you ride) with sweet components than a low level fs. That way when you want a fs later down the road you can just sell the ht and get your dream fs. Also if your new to bike matinence and overall bike care a ht is a ton easier to manage than a fs because of the lack of the rear triangle and the shock and all that. Overall you wont be dissatisfied with either however think about if you get the fs you'll have to upgrade which can easily run you the price of the bike vs a beast ht is ready to go, some ht to look at would be the ragley mmmbop and the commencial meta ht.
      Hope this helps.

    We've been hearing about the advantages of a 29/27.5 mullet setup. Well, in for a penny - in for a pound; would a 29/26 not be the ultimate mullet setup? Truth be told - I believe the suspension geometry and resultant kinomatics are the real numbers that matter, but surely a 29/26 evaluation is in order from GMBN, no? Obviously, the lower ride height of a 26 in the rear could be compensated with via geometry, but does wheel size really make a difference in the rear? If a 27.5 is good, would not a 26 be better?

    Hi guys love the show. How regularly does one have to service/check the pivot bearings on a full suspension MTB? Also what are the consequences if the bolts that run through the bearings and pivot points are over tightened? Would the suspended rear triangle be hindered from pivoting correctly? Would it damage the bearings?
    Reason I ask is that I recently bought a 2016 Scott Genius 740 from my local bike shop. After purchasing the bike I've been informed elsewhere that the pivot point between the seat stay and chain stay have bolts that were marked wrongly to torque at 15Nm. It should be between 9-10Nm only. It is a common problem with all Genius and Spark of that design.
    The guys at the bike shop did not mention anything about this and I am afraid the bike came with the said bolts tightened to 15Nm of torque. I'm afraid if I loosen the bolts now I will be met with a sheered bolt and then I will not be able to ride until I get the replacement kit (which cost a lot of money). Scott doesn't seem to want to take responsibility on this. Please help, cheers

    Hey Doddy, love your show!
    I am planning to upgrade my coil 80 mil fork for 100 mil air Manitou. What tools and spare parts will I need to perform such operation myself? I already have a set of good hex keys, but not much else. My bike has straight steerer tube, and 160 mil rotors.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @johannesb.7568
      @johannesb.7568 4 года назад

      Hi,
      if it's a new fork you will need a pipe cutter or a jigsaw and a cutting guide to shorten the steerer tube.
      Then you'll need a fitting crown race for your lower headset bearing.
      I recommend to go to a bike shop to let them help you with this because you have to be cautious with the dimentions.
      I once had a really hard time hammering it in on myself and most of the bikeshop will do if free of charge when you bought the crown race from them.
      Lastly you gonna need a hammer and a rod or pipe to hammer the star thanglede nut into the steerer tube.
      Good luck for your fork swap an wish you all the best.

    I noticed a rattele on the back end of my full sus enduro bike. It turned out to be the centerlock disc. The lockring is tourqued correctly to 40Nm but the disc is still able to rotate a bit from front to back on the splines. Any idea how to fix this?

    #askGMBNtech I have a new bike with an Float X2 performance shock. It has a two position adjustment being soft and firm as well as low speed rebound and low speed compression. Unlike the factory model it doesn’t have high speed rebound adjustment. Question - why would you build a should with no high speed rebound and how do you then tune it to stop you being bucked on jumps if you can’t slow it down?

    • @timp2751
      @timp2751 4 года назад

      It has high speed rebound compression, just not externally adjustable. Externally adjustable HSR is fairly niche, only found on top level shocks (so 'factory' for fox) and not all manufacturers (i.e. only very rarely seen on rock shox). I would see if you can tweak other settings, not quite sure where you're getting bucked. Low speed rebound adjust does have an affect on high speed too usually.
      If you really want to adjust the HSR on such a shock it'll have to be by dismantling it and adjusting the shim stack on the rebound piston and such things are quite high up the maintenance/tinkering scale!

    #AskGMBNTech Hi there, i have a question regarding tyre and rim width. I have 2 bikes, both are in the trail range, one has 19c width rims and the other 23c. How wide can i go on tyres? Original ones, that cane with the bike, are 2.2 but i feel i need to go a bit wider. Also, original tyres are 2.2 but with 58 measurement when inflated and the continental trail king that i bought are 2.2 and 55. Does this mean i can go 2.3? Or maybe 2.3 in the back and 2.4 in the front? Thank you in advance!

    • @dennyspineda1365
      @dennyspineda1365 4 года назад +1

      Not all tires will have the same profile when mounted. Some will have more volume than others, some will look more square, others will have more rounded profile. I'm no pro but my opinion would be 2.4 max width on your 19c rims and 2.5 on your 23c. Also, consider different model tires: more aggressive in front, faster rolling in rear for example and both could be same width. Ask around locals and experiment!

    Surely enduro riders should save weight in the frame rather than the wheels... I can’t imagine tht modern carbon frames are much more fragile than the modern alloy frames. The only issue I can think of is tht perhaps again with the wheels they are stiffer and therefore make the ride more out of control...? Also, obviously if a carbon frame gets damaged then a racer is out whereas they can probably get away with some damage on an alloy frame... alternatively they could switch to Ti 🤔😉

    #AskGMBNTech is it necessary to use nitrogen for a shock IFP recharge? What are the benefits of using nitrogen instead of just air?

    • @TheWebstaff
      @TheWebstaff 4 года назад

      Did you know if you fill your car tyre with air the oxygen leaks more than the nitrogen so over time as you keep refilling it it's becomes more and more nitrogen rich, as the nitrogen is bigger and escapes less.
      To answer your question though nitrogen is preferred as it's more stable in a wider range and as above it will leak less.
      But I'm certain air would be fine if you don't have easy access to nitrogen.

    • @Snipeonz
      @Snipeonz 4 года назад

      @@TheWebstaff What do you mean by more stable? And does it actually matter in the context of bicycles? I'm asking this questions specifically in regards to a shock IFP; I've seen people say that the moisture content in air can corrode a shock, while others say it's complete bollocks.
      If moisture does corrode a shock, why isn't nitrogen used in the air chamber of the shock too? But if it doesn't matter, why is it still generally recommended to use nitrogen to recharge the IFP?

    • @johannesb.7568

      I rebuild my 2014 Rock Shox Monarch rt some time ago and inflated the chamber with the IFP with a shock pump an had'nt any problems since.

    I completely disagree with Doddy’s opinion about large brakes on XC bikes. Is the total energy you’re trying to remove materially different on an XC bike vs an enduro bike? I doubt it. Or at least, that’s been my own experience - I ride my hardtail just as hard as my enduro on most trails. I run 4-piston RSCs and 180mm rotors on my hardtail and am putting Saints on my Spur. Why not?
    If nothing else, the mass between the two rider+bike systems is marginally different, so why do we hang on to this notion that XC bikes don’t deserve powerful brakes?
