      Looks like you forgot the Hans Dampf. The Nobby Nic is better suited as a rear tire paired with a Hans Dampf in front. The new Addix compound has better grip than the 1st gen. HD, which was already a pretty good front tire.

    DHR 2 front Aggressor rear for me this summer. Really love this combo. Always interested in seeing what others are running though. I looked into the WTBs but they're heavier than the Maxxis and hard to get hold of here in New Zealand. As soon as Maxxis release a trail version of the Assegai I'm keen to try that for sure!

      @michaelstewart9308 5 лет назад

      I've ran it up front and found it slid around on loose stones/dust on top of a hard surface. It's a good fast predictable rear tyre but for the front it slides too easy in my opinion

    • @kirbycalitis345
      @kirbycalitis345 5 лет назад

      Michael Stewart yea I can see that happening due to the knob pattern, kinda more like in the “fast-rolling” side of things than grippy, but it hasnt happen to me so far, I have 27.5x2.35. To be fair though It happened to me on a maxxis tire(for got the model) specially on areas where the concrete pavement ends at the start of a trail.

  • @TofuCakeCan

    My favorite Front tire (so far) is the DHR 2. For the same reasons that Jeff said, I like it because of it's incredible grip, light weight, and reasonably fast rolling tread pattern. The only time you'll notice this tire rolling slow is if you're running flat XC stuff. Earlier this year I put a 2.5 aggressor on the front to try something different. Their grip is almost the same, but I'm surprised how the DHR feels like it rolls ALMOST as well as the aggressor. When I switched to the aggressor, I kept the old DHR as a spare/backup because I liked it so much.... that's the first time I've ever saved a used tire.

    For mostly hard pack clay, 2.5 DHF in maxxterra and 2.3 (rear) aggressor in dual compound. For steep, techy, dry, and loose: 2.5 DHF in maxxterra and 2.4 (rear) HR2 in single compound (they came on my bike). Going to try out a 2.5 Assegai maxxterra and 2.3 (rear) DHR2 in DD/maxxterra for this summer as the rear tire squirm on an EXO casing isn't the best. That was really specific I know lol. Right now DHF 2.5s EXO for NW riding (mixed conditions roots and rocks and often wet) and it's a great all round tire. rolls well, and grips super well. I don't have a huge sample size though - I rode Nevegals for years on my old trail bike and really liked them after riding Tomac DH 2.3s f/r for a long time on my hardtail, which I also liked. back to the present - I'd happily roll a DHRII front and rear - did so on a 27.5 but I have a 29er now (Instinct BC Ed.). but at the end of the day... I just ordered an Assegai 2.5 EXO+ for this winter and perhaps beyond and I'm looking forward to the schlarping to come. Will report back, if I remember I left this hanging chad...

    Nobby Nic in older softer Trailstar compound was amazing dry weather (for enduro use, usually XC riders consider it wet weather tire). And now they make them only in Speedgrip compound so you need to go for Hans Dampf if you want softer compound. And I just don't get Hans Dampf, there are similar tires that work better in front, there are similar tires that work better in rear and in different weather conditions, even among other Schwalbe tires. I know, German "Hans Dampf" means "Jack of all trades", well, it seems it is really jack of all trades while master of none.

    I run Nick on the front of my XC bike. Sometimes I feel it is too slow and overly aggressive until I hit a loose spot and think glad the Nick is up front. Any nobby front tire with decent rolling resistance should work well as a Front. Really depends on your terrain. With looser rocks and loose over hard, a nobby front tire with some channeling in the tire profile should provide good grip and cornering. the smaller the nobs and the channels, the faster the tire but also provide less cornering traction typically. If all you ride is hard pack and gravel, smaller nobs and thinner tread patterns are fine for front and back tires. Otherwise a bit more care is needed to selecting the best tires for the job.

    Magic Mary, then Vigilante. Not a big fan of the DHR for a rear. Although I haven't tried the DHR for a front or the DHF for a front either. Might try have to try it.

    I'm currently experimenting with Vittoria Martello 2.8's front and rear and probably run a Bombillini 3.0 on the front (Have a 650b+ Rigid trail/touring single-speed). I prefer reliability and grip over light weight; hate 'suprises' on the trail. Do have to be more conservative on high-speed asphalt descents as one does with knobbies, and will never set any speed records vs. the geared or road set obviously.

    DHF. Uncompromising traction on my local trails. Feels light and responsive for a trail/enduro oriented tire. Never had a flat with them.

    I had a vigilante on my Pivot and it was the best front tire I ever had. Running Vittoria Martello F&R now and they are pretty good here in the Northeast. Probably will switch to vigilante again once the Vittoria wears out. I hear continental kaiser are pretty badass too.

    I love the magic mary but its usually mud or loam here also had the vigilante and dhf and they were great so basically any aggressive tyre with loads o grip n doest get shredded by rocks is cool

      The light/high grip might be ok, but I concur with uk based mtb mag tyre tests for the tough/fast...super heavy and terrible wet/mud grip. Ok in dry pack...still heavy, really heavy for a trail/non dh casing

    Im not a fan of the nobby nic in wet conditions (i have on F and R) but it rides well in dry hardpac, but maybe its the compound. I have the performance compound as opposed to the soft and apparently theres a bit of difference because of the compound im told. I've ordered the Magic Mary and Hans Dampf for winter conditions so hopefully they'll be alot better.

    Solid vid as usual. I m thinking about trying the ethirteen combo trs semi slick. Any feedback on it ? It s for an Evil Calling. I m currently rolling the DHF 2.5 front and DHR II 2.4 rear.

      That tire is sweet and works well for more XC style riding, it is a little slippery when climbing on loose dirt but still a solid tire.

    I am having a really hard time deciding whether to put an Assegai or Minion DHF on the front of my MTB. San Antonio is generally dry with a lot of hard pack and rocks. I know the DHF probably rolls easier but if I'm going through dry river beds with different sized rocks, wouldn't the Assegai be slightly better? Please give me your opinions.

    Seems to be most of people is riding using gravity only, is it really the case, need good grip during downhill but before start from top of the hill, I have to climb there, which tyre will not consume all my energy during uphill and give enough confidentiality during downhill ?
    Assegai and Magic Mary does not offer 27.5 with reasonable weight, so far I thing Nobby Nic will remain with me longer - super ground speed grip with 812 grams
