Yea I have had a 2.8 rekon for ~3 months now and the knobs are getting kinda round in spme places. Absolutely love the tire in the rear with a 2.8 DHF up Front
Thank you Jeff for helping me to decide . I now have a DHR 2 on the front and a Aggressor on the rear. Great combo. I live in Cape Town South Africa and do mainly trail and enduro riding and this combo does it all.
That Ronnie Coleman clip got me man, what a guy 😂 "everybody wanna be a bodybuilder but nobody wanna lift no heavy ass weight, LIGHT WEIGHT BAAAABYYY!!! lol
Great video! Thank you. I'm running a DHF2 in the rear and High Roller2 in the front. This is the set up that I've found that works best for me in the Pacific NorthWest.
Assegai EXO+ up front and Dissector EXO rear. Just swapped back to the HR2 DD rear today and was reminded how much I love that tire. I think the dissector makes the aggressor somewhat obsolete except on hard pack clay where you aren't braking much.
For Colorado riding I think the best tire combo for the average trail Rider is a Dissector up front Rekon in the rear. And for more DH and free ride an Assagi up front and a Dissector in the rear.
You just dropped exact video what I wanted to watch right now lol. My current Ardent works well on my 29er Hardtail, but looking for something new to try difference, and wanted to pick the one from MAXXIS. Sounds like Aggressor is nicer according to this video but worrying about weight, lighter is better for me because of our local trail layout... But I will try it!
Assegai up front and DHR II on the back in the southern winter slop. Excellent combo when things get nasty. Summer months I run Rekon up front and Aggressor out back. I also run DHRII/DHF in the 4.0" version on my fat bike. These are my winter tires and switch to Schwalbe Jumbo Jims in the summer.
Thank you for the great content. This video helped me immensely with my decision to buy a great looking WTB/Maxxis High Roller II wheel set/tire combo to upgrade my Trek X-caliber to tubeless. Keep up the great work! Also, any chance of WWC becoming a North American Nukeproof distributor?
Ooooh yes!, running Maxxis!. The Highroller II 2.5WT EXO/TR 3C in the front, and The Aggressor 2.5WT EXO/TR on the back in Fall/Winter/Autumn. When summer arrives, the back gets changed to a Rekon 2.4WT EXO/TR 3C, wheels are 31mm E*Thirteen Carbon 🚵🏻♂️💨
Great overview! I'm currently running a Forkaster 29x2.35 front and a Rekon 29x2.25 rear on my Ti HT SS. Before that I ran an Ardent Race front and Ikon Rear both in 29x2.35. I ride a combo of XC and Trail. The new set up definitely gives me better traction on techy climbs and more confidence on rocky downhill sections. I chose both sets based on your previous tire review videos.
Today I was out on my local trail with the ardent race and ikon combo you had… was my first fly over the bike with front flip caused by no grip in the front…. :)
@@dutchdude123 I recently had my wheels rebuilt with i29 WTB's and switched to DHF front and Aggressor Rear. Traction is so sic! Wheels and tires are both heavier but I'm getting faster times because of the added traction both climbing and decending.
@@jamest2660 I switched my 29x2.6 team issue front and 2.4 back for this maxxis combo cause i thought it was too heavy for Dutch trails…. The maxxis is lighter and got me 10 minutes of my track record of 20km including crash…. But I prefer grip instead of Xc speed and crashes :)
I run the ardent race front and rear. I live in South Louisiana and the trails here tend to be mostly river silt and hard pack. It's extremely fast rolling, which is great for the trail surfaces here, and it still has plenty of grip. We don't have lots of big, chunky rocks and broken up terrain, so the lighter casing works just fine
Tyre choice is a pain in the ass in my area One day is hard pack next day loam next in thick mud then rocks so i normally run magic mary up front n a dhr2 out back but this winter im trying out the schwalbe dirty dan in front n its like marys meaner big bro. Got it in the purple addix super soft compound n for being a mud tyre it tackles the hardpack pretty well and is great with mud n wet roots.
DHF & HR2 for year round natural trail riding in Scotland. Weather and ground conditions can vary so much day to day I found that’s the beat combo to stick to. Also I’m on a Mondraker Dune so fairly big n burly bike Hahaha
What a great video!. Especially like the bit about knob spacing and height. The only thing (my $.02) I can add... much of the grip comes from the sharp, square edge of the knobs. If the edges of the knobs are worn smooth, available grip goes down. I found out the hard way: road miles on mountain bike tire... not a good thing. Cheers
I wondered about this, changing tires that didn't look "worn out" but had rounded know edges always seemed to help, thought maybe it was my imagination.
What's the best selling tire in PA, I'm on the East Coast and curious what everyone runs?? The Dissector looks like a good choice maybe, might try that next!
Currently running an Assegai up front and Dissector in the rear. I’ve always been a DHF fan for a front tire and I’m not sure about the Assegai quite yet. It doesn’t feel like the side knobs bite quite as hard as the Minions.
I got a set up of Agressor 27.5x2.3 in the rear and Assegai 27.5x2.5 in front in my 2015 Kona Operator DH bike wich is a 26" bike (Great transformation there), I just love the grip in Assegai, and the fast rolling for the Agressor. I had also Minion DHF in other bike, really good grip, but the rider kinda s*cks, ho ho, REally nice video, I'm always learning lot of information from you guys, Thanks from the bottom of my hearth's bike!
Maxxis Ardent front & rear. Over 3,000 miles on them. Maxxis or nothing. Before I got them I was thinking about other brands cause they never crossed my mind. When I decided Maxxis I was set on the Ikon but the bike shop guy asked a few questions & led me to the Ardent. Only bought 1 so I could try it out. Put it on the front & was so impressed I bought it again for the rear. I want to try a different set of Maxxis but the Ardent never let me down, never a flat, phenomenal traction year round, I might just keep getting the Ardent. I've ridden all conditions. Road, wet/rain, dirt, sand, gravel, mud, snow/ice, you name it.
In his order from fastest rolling to most grip: Ardent Race (XC) Ikon (XC) Rekon Race (XC) Aspen (XC) Rekon (XC) Forekaster (Trail) High Roller II (Trail) Agressor (Trail) Dissector (Trail) Minion DHR II (Trail) Minion DHF (Trail) Assegai (Downhill) Shorty (Mud)
Assegai front Dissector rear in Aliso Viejo. So far its great. We'll see once the dirt drys out and everything is dry and dusty. Might switch to a 2.4 DHRII in the rear for summer? If a 2.5 Assegai fit in the rear of my Wreckoning I would put that in the rear.
Good video...,you are describing the High Roller II as an inbetween option of XC vs Enduro/DH and faster rolling capabilities compared to the DHR and DHF... If you go to the Maxxis website, the HRII has more rolling resistance than the DHR and DHF...Thus, I'm a little bit confused about where the HRII sits?
i've been running the 2.4/2.5" High Roller II on my Giant Trance and it seems to work great even in deep snow, not sure i'd ever need something more aggressive for trails around here.
Help needed! I am looking for a lighter rolling setup then DHF/Aggressor. Ride in mixed conditions (little mud, little robot sections, loam, Gravel) no super step downhills. I am looking at Rekon as rear and then Dissector front or a Forekaster or try the DHR2 front and live with a little drag? Any advice?🤘
This helped a lot thanks! I'm wondering if there is a Maxxis tire that would run somewhere in between a Assegai and a DHR ll (both run as a back tire).
On my trail bike I run DHR II up front and I just put on a 2.3 Minion SS in the rear. Was worried it wouldn't grip but has done everything and was faster at the bike park. Downhill bike has HRII's.
Converted the tires on my 2012 29er to tubeless and stayed close to the original factory Purgatory Control 2Bliss 29x2.2 for the front and Ground Control 29x2.1 for the back. Decided to go with a High Roller II 29x2.3 for the front and Rekon 29x2.25 for the rear. Intermediate rider here and don't want to be aggressively fast, mostly trails around NorCal. Question is did I pick a good combo or would you prefer a better choice and which ones? TIA!
DHR II is the best tire. I feel like its more versatile than the DHF, my friend crashed of low traction and i only lost rear grip when i needed to corner faster, best tire ever, cheaper, lighter and its just feels so good, its tubed in the front and tubeless in the rear, it feels really good, felt amazing at 31/28psi
Jeff will there be a video on your trip to NZ? I would love to hear how you thought the riding was in Rotorua compared with other places you have been! Which bike did you bring out?
I run a 26 x 2.4 Ardent (non race) in the front and a 26 x 2.3 High Roller II in the rear on a hardtail. I ride in the SW US so everything is super dusty and rocky but it works for me.
I’m riding a GT Avalanche in So Cal, so most of the terrain I ride in is loose over hard, dry dirt/desert landscape. I’ve had an issue with getting flats from the annoying small desert thorns sticking through my cheap tires. So I’m looking for a thicker tire. After watching this video I’m considering the Dissector and Aggressor. Does the Dissector have the same inner wall protection as the aggressor? Also considering the Minion DHR II but think this one might be too heavy for my use. Just trying to find a good tire to ride in the desert/hills without getting flats lol...thanks!
My Orbea Occam (highroller front, rekon rear) will come in a few weeks and I read that the rekon hasn’t a lot of grip. Any advise which tire combination would have more grip for trail riding?...
What is the max width tyre I can fit on my 26" 1.5/1.95 rim, Im assuming the 1.5 is internal rim measurement and 1.95 is the outer rim measurement? Currently I have a 26" x 2.0" wide tyre and looking to upgrade. to a Maxxis but unsure what tyre width my rim can support? Any help much appreciated.
I can’t imagine a better made tire than Maxxis. There’s a reason why most brands spec them on their upper end bike builds, they are Top Shelf. The only thing I miss about their WT models on my i35mm rims is that they don’t really expand like the size you would expect. For example the Aggressor 29x2.5WT measures smaller than than other 29x2.5” tires available. My concern is I’m building up a 27.5 plus wheel set and want a nice wide high volume tire. Are the 27.5x2.8” tires going to measure more like a 2.6” tire?
The bike I'm considering has rekon rear and high roller front. I want to maintain the fast rolling properties, but gain rear traction and durability. Move high roller to rear and get a dissector for the front? I dont need dhr/dhf here in Minnesota....might be overkill
I'm looking for a Dissector for the rear. Have got an Dhr DD up rear at the moment, but it rolls way to heavy, but i like the solidity of the side walls. Should i go for an Dissector in exo, exo plus or Double Down casing?? Is there a noticable difference between exo and exo+?
Are you running Maxxis tires on your bike? If so, which ones?
