- Although the front and rear tires on any mountain bike are important, rear mtb tires sometimes don’t get the same attention that front mountain bike tires do. Besides the obvious importance of tire grip, there’s also the fact that rear mountain bike tires take a tremendous beating. In this video installment, Worldwide Cyclery founder Jeff Cayley walks us through the shop's top picks for mountain bike rear tire treads. We cover everything from tire tread pattern and casing strength, to sidewall durability and rubber compounds. Check it out!

What rear tire are you running? Let us know!
45NRTH Vanhelga
Maxxis Minion DHF 2.6 WTB rear and front
Worldwide Cyclery a full bag of jellybeans
Yes! The intro is back! #introlivesmatter
Schwalbe magic mary and nobby nic both 2.35
best rear tires is.. what ever worn down front tire ive got!
This is the answer haha
Problem Solved! Your an Alpha Guy!💪
Yea
So true😂
😂 so true
Agressor in the rear and minion dhf at the front. I’ve been running this setup for almost 4 years now. And for me it’s a perfect combo for almost all types of riding 👍🏼
Rider Don thank you for your post, I have DHF both front and Rear, but thinking purchasing the Aggressor.
Yeah man I have this combo on all my bikes, good for all types of riding..cheers 🍻
Which 2.6" tire is most comparable to the agressor. I really want the agressor for my hardtail but it only goes up to 2.5"
still dont know which im gonna get :/ ill have hr2 26x2.4 front thats for sure, cant get agressor in my country...
I’ve got the same except my front is a assegai
A maxxis employee had a box of product fall on him. He had to take the rest of the day off because he got so tired.
I don't get it... ;)
@@jdavis417 Tire-d?
@@NoBrakes23 You may have to spell it out for me. ;P
Thanks for the joke dad
This is Clem Fandango. Can you hear me? ;)
Absolutely love the new 29x2.4 trail boss as a rear tire here in Tucson. Super durable, good balance of rolling speed/grip, very supportive sidewall which allows me to run lower pressures even though I am 230lbs with gear.
The last ones he interviewed were the ones that took the job that didn’t require a drug test 😂
So the shipping department lol
Great video, for a few years I was running GEAX DHEA 2.3 , very sturdy tire, grippy , long lasting and almost fast rolling..)))
I love this channel and the humor! The remix was hilarious.
Love my WTB Vigilante TCS Tough fast rolling, great for current wet/dry conditions we've been seeing in SoCal. Definitely sheds mud better than the Aggressor
Ooh been waiting for this vid. Solid lineup there
Just got my new Rocky Mountain Instinct A50 and want to try 27.5 plus tires. This is the best video I've found on tire difference. Great job dudes
The Editing comedy is great!
Been rocking the maxxis DHF Exo in front and DD in rear with a cushycore.
Great Setup no pinch no puncture yet but still light upfront.
Awesome, cool you guys did an interview round, getting some actually opinions etc in there. Thumbs up.
I have to say the answer to "compound vs pattern" was spot on imo, having had to save funds at some point and buy a cheaper tire with a not so advanced technology or "special compound", I actually enjoyed the pattern designs a lot more ... but having both a great compound and design is the way to go in the end👌
Really enjoyed your video. Looking forward to the next one.
Been rocking Ardent 2.4 for years on 29er HT and 27.5 trail bike. Can't be beat on my hard pack GA trails.
I'm installing a Schwalbe Rock Razor today, as a rear tyre. Can't wait to try it.. I have never had a semi slick tyre, but I really want something that rolls easy and fast for dry weather.
High Roller 2 on the rear has done my well so far. Soft woodland trails, dry or wet doesn't matter. Still got plenty of grip for climbing.
jeff all I got to say is that you have a great crew
Can’t decide which intro to use? Just use both! Great video guys
Magic Mary front & rear in winter Hans dampf front & rear in summer. Both set ups in speedgrip addix with tough casing for the sharp rocks around. All in 27.5*2.8
Love your vids I’m running Rekon with exo front and rear I live in a very dry place and I’m only 13 so they work very well for me and they feel amazing especially since last thing I was running was a maxxis crossmark in the front and a quite worn cheap cst tyre so the rekons are a huuugeeee upgrade love your content keep it up 👍🏻
I'm running in the front and in the rear an DHR 2. So I can put the front tire in the bake and a new tire on the front. So I have a maximum grip in the front. So happy with this setup.
I had 5 flats on my racerking 2.2 and i wanted to make a bullet proof tire so i cutted the side walls of the tire and kept only the knobs surface ..then i glued it (knobs facing up) in the interior of a Kenda Kinetics,i knew that i wouldn t find a tire thick like that so i made it myself,i love it!
Hans dampf in the rear, magic Mary up front. Both super gravity casing.
SG is so super strong for iut's mass. Way way way stronger than DD from the yellow bois :)
@@CuanL never tried maxxis so wouldn't know. I'm from Europe so you see a lot more schwalbe here than maxxis.
Dual magic mary
I have yet to meet someone else using the Onza Citius and Ibex setup which is surprising because of how incredible they are. They’re very reminiscent of the dhf and highroller 2 with similar weight and durability as the exo casing. Plus who doesn’t like some tan-wall action every now and again, it seems to be whats aesthetic these days haha
I just put a 29 x 2.3 minion SS on the back and it feels great 👍🏼
The logo on the hoodie goes over the zip so seamlessly :o
Reeeeley good Bros. Keep it up!
Not exactly sure where I fall on the scale, but think I'm more XC/Trail than Trail/Enduro. Either way I'm running a Terrene Chunk 2.3 up front and a WTB Trail boss 2.4 in the rear. Works good for the trails around me, that tend to be a little wet with plenty of rocks and roots.
I recently purchased some WTB tires
Vigilante 2.6 front and TrailBoss 2.6 rear. Only have a couple of rides on them so far but no complaints.
I run a Magic Mary up front and a Hans Dampf rear, pretty good for Scottish terrain all year round. 🤛🏻💥
I liked because of the old theme! 🤘
That's a good reason!
I liked because of the zipper play 👀
Haha I knew Chance was on the thumbnail! Chance is the man! 🤘🏽
Great vid. I run a magic mary in the front with a nobby nic in the rear. I was running hans dampf front and rear before. I just ordered a rock razor to see if it would grip as well and roll fast.
MTB Thru my eyez how do you find the grip of the Nic on the rear, especially paired with a Mary front ?
Informative & fun thanks!
I currently have Magic Mary front and back, but I'm chopping and changing all the time.
great video, think im going with the aggressor or wtb trail boss! also whats that chill little song in the background ha
So happy to see the old intro!
Great video
It's great that you ask the team around for their opinions in your videos but it will be even better if you can show some numbers at the end with the mentioned products and how many times! Thanks! Great vid...
That's a good idea! Thank you.
Continental Trail King Protection Apex/Black Chili. Der Baron up front.
Same Summer Time. Winter Baron/Baron
HR II, Agressor, DHR II, or Forekaster. I've used all of them in dry conditions and all work well.
I like technical climbing, so, a sticky compound is most important to me. Love it if you could focus on this subject. Thanks!
While I rode 150mm bike I used specialized butcher on the front and purgatory at the back, big s has good value
I run two WTB trailboss tires they are awesome great grip with really good rolling resistance for what it is
Dhf / dhr usually, but I'm currently on an ethirteen up front.. Top set up for the UK conditions 👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Been running SS on my hardtail cause it cane with it, and a high roller two on my enduro. Just ordered agressors to run on both bikes looking forward to it.
Ardent is a great underrated pick! FAST
Out of this bunch, for all around XC tire with good cornering, Rekon works well. I run it tubeless and modify the pressure to adjust for speed/grip. for 2.25 on the rear, 28-29 psi for speed. 26-27 for grip. Rolls pretty fast at higher pressures of 29-30 psi.
Recently I tried running the Ikon on the back. Ikon is super fast rolling, but noticeably less grip than a Rekon. At lower pressure the Ikon is grippy enough, but less confidence building than Rekon. Ikon is great tire if you are looking for tire that is easy to spin up and maintain momentum, unlike the Rekon where grip is more apparent. Ikon 2.2 at about 25 psi grips well enough, but care should be taken in cornering. Maybe a 2.3 would provide better cornering.. Ikon 2.2 works well over gravely ,loose, and hardpack. loose rocks over hard is ok at lower pressure. Lots of fun over rolling terrain with mixed conditions. Looser rocks and steeper climbs require something more aggressive like Rekon for XC though.
I know, i‘m late 😁
Riding Michelins since one year now...manly smooth xc/am trails...so i chose Wild AM 2.5 in the front and Force AM 2.35 rear. Gripy, durable and very light weigth, love them so far...
Haha, first time in 16 years I´we been proven wrong: Your Worldwide Cyclery sticker whasn´t glued on your zipper! Thats great news for those who may want to undress before Christmas!
Keep up the good wids!
I like Assegai/Big Betty (or Dissector if I want something faster), sometimes will swap out the front for a Magic Mary for mud and loam. Currently trying out the Martello for rolling speed on the front, and also a DHR II on the back.
I run assagai 2.5 27.5 dh casing and minion dhr 2 2.3 exo on my trek remedy 8 2021 riding trails and jumps on Sandy muddy dirt and loam and hard packed forest trail centres , love the grip on the front and the fun in the rear
i run a 2.4 HR 2 in e-bike casing in the rear and a dhr 2 wt 2.4 in the front on my trail bike
also the minion ss has amazing rolling resistance but zero grip
I run a 2.6 Trail Boss on the back of my Nukeproof Scout and it has traction for days and great cornering.
great stuff👊
Trail Boss 2.25 fast rolling rear, Vigilante 2.5 high grip front FTW!
Central California tire set up. Dry conditions- DHR2 2.4wt Exo+ front w/ Aggressor 2.3 DD out back. Wet conditions- DHF 2.5wt Exo+ w/ Aggressor 2.5wt out back. I really like the DHR2 in the front but would like to see it offered in a 2.5wt casing aand im anticipating liking the Assegai in the front and the Dissector in the rear. I think the Dissector would be a better tire with some tread siping
Shenanigans. Ive tried the DHF DD / Aggressor DD combo and agreed super fast rolling but just not enough traction on steeper trails. I've been very impressed with the Onza Ibex 2.4 front and rear. It's like a DHF but with a little more rounded profile. That setup has performed really well for me recently on wet rocks, socal mud, and now socal dry conditions and wear has been a lot less than I've gotten out of a DHF or E*13 TRS
I’m looking for suggestions. I’m starting to race enduro and I want to know which rear tire would be good for super dusty dry conditions.
you guys have way too much fun
Yo this is so cool!
Ardent race front and back 2.2 in front and 2.35 in back. I race xc in very dry conditions. These work great for me.
im running wtb trail boss atm its very fast rolling and has insane grip
Butcher up front and agressor in the rear. Best set up iv found so far.
Those last three fellas are going places. Thanks for the info. Ordering an Aggressor.
🤘😁
2.5 Assegai front / 2.4 Dissector back works magic in dry/loose conditions
Awesome video, I kinda think the recommendatino from those guys are more important that the comparison itself.
DHRII 2.4 EXO casing. How much stronger is the EXO+?
Local trails have no rocks, but when I go out of town I want something stronger.
Just ordered a dhr2 3c Maxxterra 2.3 for the rear, but wondering if I've made the right choice, it only cost £32.99 delivered so it's gotta be worth a gamble.
Like thes new #mtbtires in new #worldwidecyclery guy Jeff and yea alguns of thes #toptires much better for the bike's in yuor component's in my sicke run. Thanks guy. Saluds of chile 🇨🇱🤘😀
Hey man you always give positive energy, all the best for you and your team.
It’s the schwalbe “Rocket Ron” rear No options 😉
Rocket ron is like riding with tissue paper, there good if u like fixing flats
Nick Manser your are right I had flat too often
Dont put that tire on ur bike unless u like having flats every ride. Most delicate tire I've ever used it really is horrible.
Ikr, spent 160 bucks and after multiple tears in the tread blown out sidewall. Very disappointed with those tires. Stick with maxxis much more durable and better grip to boot try the ardent race still light and strong.
I will check maxxis for sure, thanx for advise
WWC should just be a full-time reality show you guys would kill it in the ratings
Right now, Onza foldable Ibex 2.4 on the rear and Ibex steel/wire bead on the front with Vsco grip. Not a single issue with this setup. Also a lot cheaper than my old DHRII and DHF combo. Same factory...
Maxxis also now offer EXO+ casing. inbetween EXO and DD.
Wasn't very impressed with lateral traction on the vigilantes (unpredictable) compared to the Bontrager XR4's and I went back to the Xr4's. Stayed clear of WTB tires ever since. On my DH rig I've tried the DHF and it was just such and on/off tire that I went magic mary. Loved the Hans Damf on the my enduro for DH rides. This year I am trying some Onza Aquila's front and rear for my DH rig.
Those XR4 tires are such a nice surprise. For a tire that does not look like it would have traction it is shocking. Also nice and light. Great asa rear tire.
Nice video, any comments on Continental? i've used them for the last 2 years and i just done some mountain trails in the alps in a mix of dry and wet condition due to snow melting... over wet rocks dry hard pack, sharp rocks and i was impressed with my Continental Race King MTB Tyre - Wire 2.2 i had no punctures, gr8 grip climbing but bit sketchy on descent over sandy bits... I got these for my London daily xc Riding in a mix of road and forest hardpack riding. For the wet or local bike parks i prefer the grip of the Continental X-King Pure Grip 29er Folding MTB Tyre 2.2
Specialized butcher grid 27.5 X 2.60 came on my stump Jumper works great in Arizona but that's all I know so there might be better.
Been running e13 trs race front and e13 senislick on the rear on my 29er sight. Put them both in the trash recently when I pedaled slower than mates rolled Gone with new Hans Dampf front and rear digging it so far.
I’ve got a Giant anthem 1 2017, and I use it for trail and marathon rides. What tire should I use? I ride in loose over hard terrains. I think maxxis ardent are ok.
Damn near spit my coffee during the remix
Wtb vigilante light fast rolling 2.3 front and rear here in the PNW but gonna try the judge in the back. I'm pretty light (90 pounds) so it works good.
Hanz for the rear and magic Mary front for my 27.5+ wheels and a minion dhf front and aggressor/minion ss rear for my 29’s
I use an Agressor on the rear and a Nobby Nic up front. Both are similar in terms of grip (i'd guess) but the Agressor is much tougher. The agressor also runs small, so thats not ideal, but it is the reason the weight is reasonable.
Minion DHR II front, Aggressor rear. 27.5 x 2.3 both
I run a Specialized Purgatory Grid, 2.3, in the rear, and a Specialized Butcher Grid, 2.3, in the front.
I was planning to run aggressor rear and dissector front on my yeti sb160. Here my trails lots climbing lose to pack no parks, no jumps for me. I think it will work for my riding style.
I run a pretty light tires and not many people know about this brand it is Vredestein Tiger Claw
Which do you feel climbs better? Aggressor or Trail Boss? I'm here in SoCal in the San Fernando Valley. I also frequent Snow Summit, Sky Park, and Mammoth. Thank you! Love the video. I currently have a XR4 Team issue in the front and back. Giant Reign 27.5
Im running VEE Tires Flow Snap front and rear, overall not bad and they are a beefy tire, on my spare set of wheels I am running Vittoria Martello rear and Mazza 29.2.6 front again beefy but it give me the confidence.
Got a dhf 2.3 at the front and thinking of a high roller 2 2.4 for my trail hard tail
Michelin wild rockr2 front and wild enduro rear. Best rubber and sidewalls in category 👌🤙
What about the Specialized S-Works Fast Track and the Specialized S-Works Ground Control? I am running the Specialized Armadillo Crossroads 26”x1.9” in the front and 26”x1.95” in the rear for the City. For Snow and trail riding, I am running Specialized Fast Track 26”x2.0” tire in the front and the Specialized Ground Control 26”x2.1” in the rear. Peace ✌️
Was running Maxxis ikon’s, went to specialized butcher bliss, now I’m doing wtb vigilante (front) wtb trail boss(rear) black an tan
I was looking at maxxis tires last night and i saw EXO+ in one of the specs, im going to assume its between EXO and DD. Am i right or am i right? Right?
on my Salsa Timberjack plus bike- High Roller IIs all the way around
on Stumpy- DHRII
p.s. y’all sent me one giant letter and one small letter max is tire! it’s growing on me in the looks department
Wheey the intro!! 👍🏻 👍🏻
27.5 + Rocket rons front and back. Always slipping uphill desert rocky trails. Looking to get some 27.5 x 2.8 minion or dhf or aggressor
Continental trail king rear and der baron up front, best combo ever
