I've actually been to Canada before on a trip to Banff and Jasper National Parks. No offense, but I experienced the exact reverse. I don't think I recall the border patrol agent at the Canadian airport saying a word to us, but going back home to the US, I had a conversation about things to do during my Chicago layover with the American border patrol agent. (I heard him mention the pizza, but the layover was only about an hour long. Can anyone please give me an opinion on Chicago style pizza? I'm curious to know what it's like.) Both countries now have automated kiosks for passport control and declaration forms, so maybe this could be why.

I was a truck driver back in the early 90's bringing a load of goods back into the United States. There are certain procedures regarding paperwork no one bothered to inform me about. Customs didn't like it apparently and at least to my point of view, made a big deal out of it.

@@s.n2269 I agree: It should have been passport required all the time for both land borders with Canada and Mexico, not a birth certificate or a driver license (unless, of course, you have one of those Enhanced Drivers Licenses (EDL's) issued by a few US states and Canadian provinces, Florida (where I am from) does not issue EDL's). Besides, a US passport can be replaced at the US Embassy or Consulate as opposed to a birth certificate or driver license if lost or stolen.
