Driving in a Canadian Blizzard, March 29, 2015

  • Recorded on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Driven in a 2004 Volvo XC70. This drive covers the North End and downtown of Halifax, Nova Scotia. I had to pull over a few times to get the ice off my wipers. A few times the camera went out of focus for a few minutes, so I cut those parts of the video.
    This was filmed at the same time Air Canada 624 crashed at Halifax International Airport. Investigators are apparently confused how it happened. This gives you an idea of what the weather was like at the time, which, to me, makes it kind of obvious....

    • @CptSchmidt
      @CptSchmidt  6 лет назад +2

      I didn't invent and define the term "blizzard," if that's what you're asking.

    • @CptSchmidt
      @CptSchmidt  6 лет назад +4

      It is a blizzard, actually. If you don't like the definition of a blizzard, that's nobody's problem but yours.

    • @CptSchmidt
      @CptSchmidt  6 лет назад +5

      Wow. You are truly an example of Canada's worst. Environment Canada classifies a blizzard as any storm that has snow that reduces visibility to less than 1km for 6 hours with winds up to 40kmh. It's not my fault you're an embarrassing, ignorant moron. You saying that this isn't a real blizzard is like saying that a magnitude 5 earthquake isn't really an earthquake because there a stronger earthquakes.

    That's a little more snow than you like to see but snow is normal in winter and down in the Midwest we've hardly gotten any snow at all in the last 2 years. That's NOT normal. This year 2017 we are supposed to get a wet mild winter for 2017 -2018 - I hate it - it will be wet, swishy, muddy, and ugly instead of white and frozen the way it should be.

      Halifax commonly has thaw and refreezes that can layer ice over old snow but this winter was the worst in a good while for it, about 75cm of old snow was insulated under ice with new snow on top. The sidewalks were just meter tall ice mounds that were way above the street that year

    • @CptSchmidt
      @CptSchmidt  4 года назад +1

      @@donniegray553 Considering the video is 1:04:07 minutes long and you claimed to have watched four minutes at the time of your first comment, which was 18 minutes ago, that would mean that you could have only watched about 22 minutes of the video by the time you said you had "watched to the end"-not even a quarter of the video.
      I'm sorry that you don't agree with Environment Canada's definition of a blizzard, but this storm met all of the conditions for it to qualify as a blizzard. There was also no ice rain at any point in this video.

      It was a blizzard. A blizzard occurs when it snows in combination with sustained winds of more than 40kmh and reduces visibility to less than one kilometer for at least six hours. This storm met all of those criteria.

    • @miloe436

      This was a blizzard. The definition of a blizzard is "6 or more hours with winds above 40 km/h, with visibility reduced to below 1 km by blowing or drifting snow, and with windchills over 1600 W/ m2 (watts per square metre)." This met all of those conditions.

    • @CptSchmidt
      @CptSchmidt  6 лет назад

      At no point in this video is the visibility more than 1km. It's mostly between 500-800m at most.

    • @smarthome2660
      @smarthome2660 6 лет назад

      wow, you say 800 meters? well that is .497 miles so I was closer when I said ONE HALF MILE not 1 mile. I counted the streetlights and rounded them down to 300 feet per block and guessed 1/2 mile which is about 800 meters. When we get a blizzard here in Michigan, I can't see 100 feet. BTW, this blizzard you show doesn't even have very much wind. Yea it is a fair amount of snowfall but blizzard, not. I have seen it snow 48 inches in 8 hours and that was just a lot of snow.

    • @CptSchmidt
      @CptSchmidt  6 лет назад

      Okay, but this storm fit the Canadian definition of a blizzard. Visibility must be less than 1km for at least three hours by snowfall/blowing snow. At times in this video, visibility is barely 100m. Just because sometimes it snows heavier than what you see here does not mean that this was not a blizzard.
