I'd be interested to see what happened if Rick stopped trying to hit shaped shots and instead took a more calculated placement using safer straight(er) shots. After watching almost every single video Rick has ever posted, I've noticed that he always tries to shape his shots with a draw or fade. Rick is probably a far better player than almost everyone who is watching including myself (15 handicap), but I've seen he looses a lot of strokes after hitting into tricky locations (as we all do) trying to shape his shots where often times he just needs to send it straight and keep it simple. On a mental level as well, Rick is such a man of the people in that once he has one bad hole, his negative self talk, personal criticism and psyche takes an almost immediate dive into a place that is near impossible for him to recover from. I remember many years ago playing in a pro-am and played like Rick. Anyway after the round I was in the clubhouse with the pro and he advised me to shorten all my clubs by an inch and a half. "Why" I asked "would that improve my golf?". "No" he replied "but at least you'd be able to close the wheelie bin". Good advice Rick. 😂
That looked like one of the hardest courses I've seen not just layout but wind and lightning fast, undulating greens, that course would kill anyone's game. Head up Rick 💪
I think i've watched all your "10 shot challenge" matches on RUclips, and have never seen you play this bad, Rick! Certainly wasnt your day.. But i loved the way you kept encouraging yourself right through and how humble and polite was Sergio.. such a class act! That course was tough ! Thanks for the content Rick.. really enjoy watching your videos
Constructive criticism here, but I think Rick could do with realising he isn’t as good a golfer as he thinks he is. Very capable and knowledgeable, but trying to shot shape constantly when he probably plays to about a 7 handicap is nuts. Great content, long time follower, keep them coming mate
Agree 100%, get out on the range and practice. Grind at it until you have a stock shot you can rely on. After you have that in your toolkit if you really, really need to shape a shot then go for it...
Shot shape and trying to kill the ball. He just needed to go to stock and do an 80% swing. Whats more embarrassing, driving 60 yards behind Sergio or constantly trying to find the ball...
I can't imagine how lucky Rick must feel after all the hard work and his whole dedication to his RUclips channel. And now he's getting to play with all these legends. He visits the most beautiful places of golf that exist... Fair play Rick! You the man. Keep cooking
No usually a commenter on anything online but just wanted to say THANK YOU for putting out probably the MOST RELATABLE golf video I've ever watched. this is a representation of every single round I play with my mates when I think I've got something figured out. keep up the great content.
Well done Rick, that course looked BRUTAL! Great character to keep going and making it enjoyable for the viewer. Always respect your attitude when your golfs not there. If you can keep your head up when playing a player like Sergio filming on RUclips for hundreds of thousands of viewers, then I can keep my head up when my games nowhere to be seen on a Saturday morning stableford with my mates! Thanks for showing golf as the brutal monster that it really is. These rounds make the good ones even sweeter and cant wait to celebrate with you when it all comes together v soon!! Looking forward to the rest of the years content and thanks again from a very appreciative long term fan 🙏🏻⛳️
This is definitely not the first time that Sergio has played with someone that is totally over-awed by his presence. What a lovely guy. Gutted for you Rick. That course looks really tricky! On to the next...
Congrats just for getting to meet and play with Sergio. Even though you didn't play as well as you had hoped he was polite, humble and friendly with encouraging words at every hole. I'm an even bigger fan of his after watching this.
Great! The head is the hardest part of the game to control. I appreciate you show the good, bad and almost all bad days. Thank you. Frustrating I know, especially giving how well you are playing lately. Great to see Sergio being such a graceful host. Keep up the great work.
One of the best videos so far. Golf is real…I’ve had days where it was just my day and had them days where I just quit and left the course. Like you Rick…I grew up watching Sergio and am a fan and this is a beautiful course. Keep your head up and keep swinging.
Great vid! You both played against the course more than each other. This was the hardest course on a -10 and some of the toughest greens I’ve seen on RUclips golf!
Tough watch but extremely relatable. Can’t even begin to imagine how hard it was to ‘keep the head’, as the level of frustration at imploding during such an exciting opportunity must have been insane. I’m not going to sit here and criticise someone who we all know is more than capable of excellent golf(not to mention the time, effort and money they’ve put in over the years for our enjoyment). But if I can provide any sort of feedback, it’d be to try and forget the poor golf, enjoy the moment for what it is and be bring some more positive energy. We’re all rooting for you Rick(or most of us are anyway).
A very real and relatable video, as always. It’s what makes Rick the godfather of RUclips golf content. But when you get so down on yourself, it really saps the fun and spectacle out of these videos, which should be epic. Maybe have Guy playing to help keep it light? Also, I know the podcast will carry a lot of the chat but we’d all love to hear more from the tour pro in this format too.
Yeah, it's weird - it seemed like Rick's game was in pretty fine form....and then he tossed his entire bag and went with new clubs across the set. Go back to the T150's with the Ping G425 Max driver.....go back to a time when things were working well!!
Rick, we don’t watch these videos for you to go and shoot level par and leave the tour pro needing 11 under, and we didn’t start watching you for amazing golf in the first place, you are a personality in golf that nobody has come close to and everyone will continue to watch no matter the standard, keep your head up and either way we’ll be here!
My heart goes out to Rick! But we all know these days, when things don't go to plan. And so recognisable on the tee: when focussing too hard, all kinds of weird and unwanted shapes appear, and when just letting it go, the ball flies off in random directions 😅 But in Rick's defence: when a guy like Sergio Garcia, who on any course typically shoots 5 or more under par, ends up par, you know that it's a really hard course. The greens seemed to have been very unforgiving with a tiny margin between hitting it too short or overly long. So: well done Rick! Next time will be better 👍 ❤. Looking forward to the re-match.
Love this real content - it’s why golf is so addictive…a terrible day at a beautiful office, playing against a golfing legend - but you were in bits..I hope you look back now and realise how fantastic it was? you hit the one straight drive on 18th and Sergio said, that’ll bring you back…he knows we all have bad days by that comment - a gentleman
You know what? I can't watch this. I got to the tee off at 10 but I can't take any more. Agonising to see Rick implode - and in the presence of one his heroes. I feel the frustration.
When swings fall apart like that, need to have ability to analyse and reset. The reset is created on the practise ground but appreciate trying to find it on the course whilst having a proverbial car crash is not easy. Great video, the drama of each shot was fascinating!
Had a day like this recently Rick! Almost wanted to walk off on the 8th. Persevered, but it wasn’t easy! We all know you’re a rockstar and will come back better than ever. Was just one of those days that we all have in the locker, but happened to coincide with Sergio and a 10 Shot Challenge.
We´ve all been there Rick, some days are just like that, but playing with Garcia that would put a smile on my face. Better luck next time Rick. Greetings from Björn in Iceland.
Love the content as always and Sergio is a class act being your floor caddie. Hated seeing you struggle but it’s also why I love your channel. It’s transparent and that’s why you are trusted in the space. Cheers to you Rick and your team and I look forward to the rematch where you take El Niño down!!!!
PLEASE READ RICK… smoother transition. Smoother transition. When your swinging bad it’s because your transition is snappy. Iv been watching you for so long I am 100% sure. You need someone with you to give you a nudge and remind you. Look back at your bad shots anytime and you will see. Your on plane so good when the transition is smooth. I’m a huge fan and I want you to do well dude. I’m from Trafford golf too mate.
Hard to see you struggling that day. However I think this could deserved a debrief video on what went wrong into your game, what you should have done differently and what technics (including mental )you should have used to recover your golf during the round. As an average golfer, what was a bad day for you is unfortunatelly a regular day for most of us. So any debrief and experience sharing will be a fantastic gift to all of us.
This is why you are so popular on RUclips; we can all relate to days like this! That looks like a tough course, even on a day when you had your A game.
Yeah I’ve seen sergio play this course and after I saw 7000+ yards, tight, and knowing the greens were fast I knew this was going to be brutal for Rick. It’s a different beast than UK golf. I’ve seen some decently paced greens in the UK, but even some of the nice courses Rick plays seems to be like putting on carpet. The southeast region of the US has a ton of these courses. I played my high school state golf tournament at a course in Alpharetta and it ate me alive. It was a huge wake up call of what kind of difficult courses are out there vs. what I had been playing on.
@@dontpa_nic for sure. And those type of green that are rock hard and like glass are super difficult to get used to if you don’t play them all the time. Then you add grain to chipping which doesn’t seem to exist much in the UK and it just makes a tough time out on the course. You have to hit fairways and greens otherwise you’re going to shoot an astronomical score
@@jakehmckernan1 Yeah tough course etc, but also blasting it left and right will never be good. Not hating at all, just obv the game is not in a good place and Rick'll have to dig it out of the dirt
@@dontpa_nic I don’t take it as hate. I get it. It’s rough watching someone make zero changes to their game who has a warped perception of their skill level. I heard Rick say once that he was like a +1.5 handicap… I was like surely this is a joke… how can you expect to improve your game when you think you’re scratch or better all while playing some of the easiest courses I’ve seen. Any time he comes to the US and plays a professional level course he’s shooting anywhere from like 82-90. Like I said I get it. I used to have a warped perception from playing easier courses. Then I played a pro level course in tournament and it was a real wake up call to my actual skill level
@@jakehmckernan1Rick has said numerous times that he feels his handicap is around 4. Playing the toughest courses from the tips with added pressure of cameras and v PGA Tour Pros you have to give him a break. The guy has a rough day here but still a pretty good golfer generally.
Pros filling divots is becoming a trend. It’s fun to see how uncomfortable Rick is when they do it. It’s like a combo of humbled and “I don’t know what to do with my hands” and I’m here for it. Rick is a humble genius.
This was a tough day and not an easy watch Rick. We have all had terrible rounds where we feel disillusioned and it’s a lonely place. The difference is that you experienced yours in the company of an icon of our sport and have shared it for the world to see. We feel bad enough if we have this type of round in the company of one of the best players in our clubs never-mind the world! On a positive note you have been trending in the right direction so just keep your chin up and keep pushing yourself both in your own golf and in the content and collaborations! 👊🏼
Keep your head up Rick, you'll bounce back. I think if you choose 1 shot shape and stick with it (no matter how inviting another shot shape looks like) you'd play much better. Either stick with a draw or stick with a fade, and eliminate over thinking. Cheers
This video is why almost every amatuer disagrees with the golf adage "drive for show and putt for dough"!! It doesn't mean a thing if your dispersion with the driver is 100+ yards left to right, the hole is dead from the tee. Well done for staying chipper, Rick, tough course and windy too
Love these videos. Thanks for playing in a non-Florida U.S. location! Reminder that we all like to play with (and watch): - guys who have fun no matter what - guys who avoid making excuses (yeah, we have all could have played better or could have had a better night's sleep) - guys who can triumph in their good shots and get pissed but also laugh at their bad ones GOLF IS HARD. Keep your chin up!
Playing a childhood hero showed. Pressure built and got out of control on a super hard looking course. What a day though regardless. 20 years ago young Rick would never believe he’d be playing with Sergio. What a day
It’s always hard for the playing partner when you actively struggle. What a class act Sergio was with his positivity and encouragement. He kept the vibe of that video watchable.
It´s been a great “how to be mentally strong when you struggle in golf” lesson Rick, focus on your next golf shot again and again! Great video, love watching Sergio who is history of our golf. Love from Spain!
After watching countless Shiels Golf match ups, I can’t help thinking he would be better off with game improvement clubs, not the Players Clubs that land in the rough or the next fairway. .. just sayin.
No game improvement clubs are going to fix that over rotation at impact. He is generally finding the middle of the club it is just wide open or way shut at impact
I'll say this for the 10th time, and I'm surprised no one that plays with Rick has never said it. Rick needs to stop breaking his wrists so soon on the back swing. It's why his drives are so erratic.
You're probably right. You should start a golf channel and get 2M followers, then you can tell him. He's not a pro golfer. He's a golf entertainer. These guys aren't there to correct his swing. I'm sure Sergio saw 100 imperfections with his swing. That's not what the day is about. Just having fun.
first ep of yours off of golf life and i want birdy dance - SG is a pure gentleman im glad these pros do shows like yours, just being humans being good at what they do, with humility love it go on the golf life!
Great to see Rick hanging in there and staying positive even though it was hurting. Fantastic to have Sergio on the channel. Hope to see him play Rick again.
I think you hit the nail on the head. I could feel the nerves you had, out there playing with one of your golf idols. The pressure a guy would put on himself to feel the NEED to play well. Most people will never understand what a mental battle that is. Well played non the less, and another very entertaining video Rick!
So relatable for us golfers on a bad day, it's so good to see other golfers struggling on youtube and not always see the perfect scores, it's not realistic
This is the first time ever I have stopped watching one of your golf matches, your 3 under to 1 over and I just feel the worst not for you and your wish I could play golf game but for poor Sergio who spent more time finding your balls and you could feel your game/shame was effecting Sergio's game. Can't blame fast greens when your all ready in the crapper before the greens. As a RUclips golf follower all I can say is SORRY Mr Garcia for what Rick brought to the course.
Its massively impressive how no matter how long rick hits his putts past the hole he doesnt learn in the slightest to hit it softer. Guys stance on the podcast of people enjoying rick play badly because its relatable is nonsense. Its very frustrating watching these videos and seeing rick remain absolutely terrible
I really enjoy listening to the podcast and then watching these. Sergio seems like a great dude. Well done Rick, your game is noticably getting better, the difference between good and great is just so huge compared to the difference of okay and good. Keep it up!!
what a joy to watch Sergio Garcia up close and personal...best approach game i can remember on your channel....also great ball hawk for someone who plays with a caddy most of the time! the course is clearly super tough so don't feel too bad Rick...great show, again...
Rick I just want to say I feel you brother. I was down to a 3 hdcp last year shooting mid to low 70s regularly.. now, my last 6 rounds have been mid 80's. Golf is cruel and maddening. Love you Rick, stay positive. We know the good golf is in there
Man what a match, it was great seeing you stick with it and anyone watching could see the frustration you felt which made it all the more natural. You could even tell that Sergio as feeling for you too. Really though, what a better way to end it on 18, great drive and then shot into the green, golf is giving everything back to and then your birdie putt.... just to show that sometimes it can be cruel and in a few days humorous lol
Really felt for Rick on this one. Clearly really wants to give us all a great video to watch & must be so disappointing when it doesn’t go as he hoped The pressure to perform on these one time top pro videos must be so high Still enjoyed it. Was nice to see Sergio in this setting and ended the video thinking more positively about him than I started Thanks Rick
These series against the pros are brilliant to watch, try your best is all you can do and remember they are pros and dont beat yourself up, enjoy it and keep them coming ! Met Sergio a while back, nice guy and was prepared to chat to us which was a nice touch !
Rick, I love your videos, and one of the great things about them is that you are a good golfer who still struggles from time to time. Your videos inspire me to keep playing, even when I’m having a tough day on the course. Keep it up, love it.
Ive played a few golf courses right next to Spanish Oaks (The Hills CC), and they were fantastic. This is on my list to play as well! Great video again, cheers Rick
I love watching these challenges and have had many a day that Rick has had today. I’m not a very good golfer but it’s interesting to see Rick’s swing appears to be twice as fast as Sergio’s. Bye the way - what a class act Mr Garcia is
I mean fair play to Rick stopping halfway through and apologising to viewers for his play. Shows he must genuinely care, but there is no need to apologise. You’re still giving us great entertainment and access to see Pros in a more relaxed environment than we normally do. Thanks Rick and team.
I've played Spanish Oaks without wind (thankfully) and found those greens are the firmest ones I've played. Very difficult and hard to get use to. Rick is so fun to watch and really relatable to due to his great personality and sense of humor. I root for him as he aims to improve an already outstanding game.
I always find it refreshing that all the tour pros that Rick brings on here to play are empathetic and understand (or at least pretend to) just how freakin hard golf is for even an above average amateur golfer. They all have seemed super chill....then again I'd be chill too if my job was playing golf. 😂
That was a very tough course, with very difficult visuals. Tough even with an "A" game day. I loved the way you talked about his charitable promotions. You did your homework!!!! Rick Shiels, you´re a true professional. To better days!!!
Don’t be too hard on yourself Rick, one thing, you needn’t be too nervous around these legends/pros. Why? Because you yourself are a legend as well and they all want to play with you come to your channel because you are THE biggest name in Golf media! FYI, you as per the rankings are more influential in the world of Golf than all of these challengers.
Rick, we're all rooting for you, bro'. I teach golf here on the West Coast of CA. This is a constructive post hoping you will read and then watch what is going on with your swing. Please go to 1:06:45 and pause the video. Using the period key while on pause (spacebar) and the comma key, you can SLO-MO forward and backwards a fraction of a second. You will immediately see what is going on with your SETUP and swing. You're definitely a qualified golfer to diagnose why that drive went left. The hardest part about golf is "what you feel, isn't real". Go back and forth watching your takeaway and downswing. There are several ways to fix the problem. Hang in there, Rick. It's a really hard game, even for the pros.
This course looks very difficult. I know, Rick, you had a bad day, but Sergio wasn’t running up the score either. BTW I love these -10 videos. It shows how good tour players are, and is something to inspire you to aspire to. Put in the work if you want to get better. Golf is humbling. Thank you for this content.
Sergio wasn’t running up a score because he was exhausted after trying to find Ricks ball every other hole. Any other day sergio is 5 or 6 under there. Burned the cup on multiple occasions.
Rick I know you had a rough day of golf. But welcome to the average golfers day. I can shoot mid 80s one day and high 90s the next. Glad to see you in the US, have a great trip.
Great video and thanks, as always, for putting yourself out there, Rick. Sorry to see you sometimes have the double cross going on your drives. Sergio is such a nice guy and so world class - I think he won it with those straight drives.
What a great guy Sergio is. You can see the quality of a Major winner e.g. the pitch on 6th, the 5 wood on 17th. This looked like a REALLY tough course - Par 71, 7000+ yards - tight driving lines, slopes, hazards, very fast greens. Rick had an off day with the driver which created a lot problems plus one or two dubious recovery choices. But great camaraderie between Sergio and Rick. Definitely a rematch required !

That looked like one of the hardest courses I've seen not just layout but wind and lightning fast, undulating greens, that course would kill anyone's game. Head up Rick 💪
515 yard par 4 is no joke
Same. It reminded me of the anxiety I got watching people play Spyglass Hill
Most courses seem hard when Rick is playing them 😂
I think i've watched all your "10 shot challenge" matches on RUclips, and have never seen you play this bad, Rick! Certainly wasnt your day.. But i loved the way you kept encouraging yourself right through and how humble and polite was Sergio.. such a class act! That course was tough !

7 hc, try 16 😂
Well done Rick and very brave of you to stick this video on you tube. Great entertainment value and will definitely watch this again. 👍
Well the good news is Rick, you showed us alot of the course from many different angles!!! Gracias Sr. Garcia.
Sergio is a gent. Tough out there Rick. Get the Ping back out for the box.
Yeah, it's weird - it seemed like Rick's game was in pretty fine form....and then he tossed his entire bag and went with new clubs across the set. Go back to the T150's with the Ping G425 Max driver.....go back to a time when things were working well!!
Love when Mr. Shiels hits a slice and says “Stop cutting”
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Rick, we don’t watch these videos for you to go and shoot level par and leave the tour pro needing 11 under, and we didn’t start watching you for amazing golf in the first place, you are a personality in golf that nobody has come close to and everyone will continue to watch no matter the standard, keep your head up and either way we’ll be here!
My heart goes out to Rick! But we all know these days, when things don't go to plan. And so recognisable on the tee: when focussing too hard, all kinds of weird and unwanted shapes appear, and when just letting it go, the ball flies off in random directions 😅
But in Rick's defence: when a guy like Sergio Garcia, who on any course typically shoots 5 or more under par, ends up par, you know that it's a really hard course.
He’ll get over it
@@Dan-kb9vr Maybe. But it'll stay with him for the rest of his life.
He’ll get over it. In fact, he filmed it, edited it, threw it on RUclips and has made money from it. He’ll be fine
When swings fall apart like that, need to have ability to analyse and reset. The reset is created on the practise ground but appreciate trying to find it on the course whilst having a proverbial car crash is not easy. Great video, the drama of each shot was fascinating!
What a great guy Sergio is. That's a tough course and those greens were scary. Thanks for the video and look forward to the rematch.
I’m from Trafford golf too mate.
nothing better than rick hitting into the bushes and saying "just a little bit left of target" classic
Yeah currently no need at all for rick to play 7000+ yards in these
@@dontpa_nic for sure.
That was a tough watch.
i felt embarrassed just watching it imagine how rick felt. Sergio was cringing at some of them tee shots
Could be the last of this series I think
@jordywatts4095 I wonder when though this was filmed. He seems to have been playing better recently and this seems like it was filmed back in Autumn.
Makes me laugh whenever he says "can I beat XXX if I start 10 under par" - I think we've established the answer is well and truly... no... 😂
@@carterhounslowdefinitely. Rick said before Jon leaving to LIV was announced. So Nov or early Dec?
These are definitely the best videos on your channel Rick. As many of these as possible please!!!
Looking forward to Rick's new series of videos, Break 85 :)
I watch Rick just for the melt down...they"re classic at this point..lmfao!!
Thanks for playing in a non-Florida U.S. location!
Reminder that we all like to play with (and watch):
- guys who have fun no matter what
- guys who avoid making excuses (yeah, we have all could have played better or could have had a better night's sleep)
- guys who can triumph in their good shots and get pissed but also laugh at their bad ones
GOLF IS HARD. Keep your chin up!
Playing a childhood hero showed. Pressure built and got out of control on a super hard looking course.
What a day though regardless. 20 years ago young Rick would never believe he’d be playing with Sergio. What a day
The match we all want to see is Rick Shields vs Jimmy Bullard. Straight up! Strokes 18 holes. My money is on The Bull
Bullard wins comfortably. Rick in his own admission is far from a scratch golfer. Jimmy is & is a hell of a player.
The real question is whether Rick Shiels PGA could beat Tubes in a scratch match or would he need a 10 shot start !
Sergio at 39:35 “ok, we’ll find one of them” 😂
It’s always hard for the playing partner when you actively struggle.
Everyone Rewatch Adam Scotts’s 10 short challenge and see how much the vibe has changed recently
Curious, how do you mean?
???
Rick just doesn’t care anymore

Rick was finished after the first hole....negative death spiral

Rick I just want to say I feel you brother. I was down to a 3 hdcp last year shooting mid to low 70s regularly.. now, my last 6 rounds have been mid 80's. Golf is cruel and maddening. Love you Rick, stay positive. We know the good golf is in there
Rick we love how you put yourself out there. Very easy not to do these videos but you keep coming back time and time again 👏🏼
Clearly really wants to give us all a great video to watch & must be so disappointing when it doesn’t go as he hoped
The pressure to perform on these one time top pro videos must be so high
Still enjoyed it. Was nice to see Sergio in this setting and ended the video thinking more positively about him than I started

Thanks to both, beautiful course!
Even tho Rick struggled Sergio seems like a genuinely really good guy and what an honour to share a round with! 💚
Really good guy that is happy taking blood money
Thanks for bringing that to us Rick great to watch. What a gent Sergio is and love seeing him in those colours again 😊 !!
I enjoyed that dude, content is top notch regardless of the quality of golf, it’s just really good to watch.
Hahahahaha…..Loved that you got to experience the Texas Hill Country…where there is more emphasis on straight drives and conservative approaches.
Always fun to watch these ... Rick .. please add more discussion with your pros ... Their history, techniques, experiences, etc.
