That's the very point of the Render96 models and textures. Ray tracing also helps. It's not 100% perfect, but it's already looking great. I can't wait to see what it looks like once finished. Also, stages. The lighting and textures already make stages look nicer, along with the high-poly characters and objects. But fully remodelled stages? That would be SICK!
Apparently for this game the guy making it had from a lot of people specifically because he wanted to grab all of the original textures and that's why they look so good
Whenever I think of Super Mario 64 these days, it pains me that Nintendo really made people 60 currencies for a emulation collection and this game here didn't even receive any major tweaks. I'm glad this project exists, it actually made me wanna play Super Mario 64 again.
one day theres gonna be a mod so damn realistic, it will be like a little man in the game and talking with his own self learning AI and freaking out about where he is and all the dangers around him.
The character models, objects and textures look fantastic. But the stage models are still untouched...I wonder what they could look like. The lighting and textures already makes them look nicer, but I can't wait to see what they'd look like remodeled.
I haven't played Super Mario 64 since I was a kid, and as far as I was concerned, it always looked like this. Man, I wonder what a Render Smash Bros would look like. I remember being amazed by how good Melee looked compared to regular Smash.
Very cool! I remember as a kid being told stalactites (the ones hanging from the roof) needed to hold on TIGHT to avoid falling and stalagmites (the ones sticking up from the ground) MIGHT one day reach the roof if they keep growing.
The mods look really good and obviously a lot of effort was put into it but man for me it feels super uncanny to see Mario 64 run so smooth and clear especially when Mario runs and jumps
Here, I'm gonna help you out with the Stalactite v Stalagmite thing and you'll never forget it again... useful information I know. Stalactites hang from the cave ceiling so they have to hang TIGHT (tite) or they'd fall and you better watch your step because you MIGHT (mite) trip over a Stalagmite. Was taught that in like 2 grade when I went to a cave for a field trip.
I think there's something really charming about seeing low-poly models with insane lighting. I feel like it could be a genuinely beautiful art style for an indie game or something. It seems like it's the 3D version of modern pixel art.
I just got Mario for my 64 system. I never had the chance to play it until now. I grew up playing Super Mario World and all the other games on the SNES. I'm blown away. My dad would be so impressed by this. He was an old school gamer. RIP Daddy.
I think the reason Mr. I was like that was because of the "billboards." If you go to the Options menu, or by pressing R when you're on the pause screen, go to the GAME section and there should be this 'Enable Billboards' button, and from your perspective, it should be disabled. Once you enable it, Mr. I will be back to normal.

The only thing that I don't like about this is that the levels have so little polygons for so high resolution textures! I'm still hoping that one day, some mad lad will make hd maps to accompany the hd character models.
The 3090 comment resonates. I upgraded to a 3080 but I mostly use it to play stuff like Final Fantasy Randomizer. I had to download RE8 just so I could pretend like I own it for a reason.
I really love this, but does it really make sense to make light make sense in a platformer like this? Like when you were talking about Mario's shadow being affected by light, wouldn't it be better mechanically for his shadow to always be directly below him?
If Nintendo was smart they pay the ppl that made this and are working on the zelda one too and selling it at a 30-40 dollar price. I always wanted to see these games with the models that we were ment to imagine back in the 90s with those models they'd post on the Nintendo magazines.
