Fun fact: The toads in SMB1 were originally called "Mushroom Retainers" for some odd reason. It's possible the person who wrote the guide was somehow unaware of the updated name, although that would be pretty unlikely given that the name Toad had been in use since at least SMB2.
@@robertanderson9447 You know, now that I think about it, the guide does refer to them as "Peach's loyal mushroom retainers", so maybe the writers used it as a title for higher-ranking Toads? Still a confusing decision nonetheless.
God I love Render 64. I’ll never not imagine Mario and Co looking like this. My earliest memories are of the SNES and my earliest actual experience playing games is the N64 and those media renders are just...how I remember what Mario looks like
Crazy part of strategy guides was that they rarely directly told you how to beat the game. Mostly they would give you riddles on how to win. They "guide" you in the right direction but you still have to figure out how to get through everything. Yah fun lol
Yeah, it’s crazy. I always though I “lured the eel out” but rather, apparently he just leaves and the hole being available is supposed to entice the player in.
That's funny. When I was a kid, I thought you were supposed to ride on the penguins head across the ice bride to avoid the wind. I had no idea you could use him as a wind shield. Lol
This was really fun to watch but seeing it done as intended is so weird xD Also I wasn't expecting 4:50 and nearly shit my pants when the Eel loaded in. That model is horrifying.
I had my Super Mario 64 guide confiscated after bringing it to my state standardized test as it could be "used in another student's essay". I was livid.
@BAXTER MADORE Because we were told to bring something to do if we were finished testing so books were okay during the math and science portion but unaware 6th grade me thought it would be okay during the ELA portion. I was just getting into retro collecting and got the strategy guide a couple days before.
This reminds me of that school assignment where you had to read the entire thing first instead of doing all the activities on the page, which were intentionally dumb like spinning or making an animal noise.
I did something similar recently when replaying Super Mario Galaxy. I only performed actions that were expressly taught to me by the game. Not even a long jump or wall kick was allowed until I found the relevant instructional sign. It was pretty neat. I had to restrain myself from using the crazy maneuvers I usually do.
Mushroom Retainer was the title of the Toads at the end of each world in the original Super Mario Bros. According to the North American manual they were advisors to the princess and the only Toads not turned into brick blocks by King Koopa's evil magic.
And here I thought the reason you never jumped on the penguin's head in all those earlier challenges was because of the limitations of the controller setups. I remember jumping on the penguin's head when I first played the game, although I think I found that trick by pure accident. XD In later runs I almost always used the cannon, because I usually had the Vanish Cap by this point, so I had a reason to go into the igloo. That and I didn't like the risk of being blown off and losing my cap if I missed the jump. That penguin can walk pretty quickly. When it wants to. Another reason I use the cannon is the penguin's seemingly inconsistent movements. There probably is a pattern, but I've been using the cannon too much to take the time to figure it out. P. S. If I had this guide as a kid, I think I'd have been the only kid I knew who'd have caught that AC/DC reference. That's what happens when you grow up listening to classic rock radio. XD
It’s so cool the writer made an AC/DC reference. It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll is a song off their album voltage. A cool reference too a great band. Brilliant content as ever man, really fun to watch

I'm glad to see this one done! Pretty funny how so many of the stars are way harder the intended way
Hi!
Love your challenge videos
hey it's nathaniel bandy awesome
oh hi nathaniel bandy
Be harder if he did them in actual order like Nintendo intended. But Tetra wanted to be slightly lazy.
You already failed a minute in, Nintendo don't intend emulation >:O
:O How could he
omg ur right
Nintendo: oh you're using an emulator? YOU READY TO DIE?
Well...
they intended you to play it on actual hardware with no emulation so...
CORRECTION: Nintendo Did intend it. See: 3D All-stars, which emulates SM64

It could have been related to how they were trapped in the blocks in SMB1?
I guess that was actually a translation error, but that's just a theory, a book theo-
“Retainer” is also used at least once in the Mario cartoons, for what it’s worth.
At one point he shows a page with a "Toad's Tips" section. So the guide's writers were seemingly aware. Maybe they just wanted to be corny again.
@@robertanderson9447 You know, now that I think about it, the guide does refer to them as "Peach's loyal mushroom retainers", so maybe the writers used it as a title for higher-ranking Toads? Still a confusing decision nonetheless.
