@@jontullett9068 in the USA, a bricklayer installs, brick and concrete blocks, and the like. A mason is quite a bit more, he does stone, usually he also does fireplaces, not every bricklayer can do this things with finess! Jim
@Jim Pie Mason is much different than a bricklayer. Not better but different. I've been a Mason for 30 years. Stone, stucco, tile, fireplaces, brick buildings, chimneys, block and all of the layout.

Never seen one either, but it looks too flimsy to me. I like the idea of the spring, but if it's not binding to the block you can't pull it very tight. Of you look at the line, it's easy to loose.
That's how we do in Guam, USA and Micronesia and it's the best. Pour concrete from the top, including the beams and roof later. The place where Category 5 Hurricane 🌀 is very common.
I was a Mason tender In the union we built schools and this is how every Mason worked.those block weight alot that's for sure. We used 12 in block alot of the time those suckers are 55 lb a block . Number 7 rebar everyother cell so much grout lol .
I've laid tens of thousands of 12 inch block, and have never laid or seen anyone lay one like that, a solid sure but not a 12, much less an 8. Furthermore I've never seen a 12 that heavy, even 16x16 column blocks are 50 lbs or less. 55 lbs is way too much for me, what were they solid split face, or fluted?
I used to labour to two old men in 60s an they still could lay 5 inch solids an 9inch booster s FRM tarmac .them old brickies showed a young lad how to always have a bucket an thick bristles brush to clean shovels an mixer no brick in mixer.
The only thing I see that's a little off. Is the chicken leg was put on the last block that was installed and you can't pull? That line tightening to keep a belly out of it. Yet chicken line need to be 22 and a 1/2 blocks behind the last one installed on both ends. Or you need to use flying block instead of chicken leg. That way you can get a good pool get to stretch out of that line specially If it's a new ball align you're using. Now if I could i'd like to just throw out a hint to all people who install block. Picture that block is a big brick and then lay the block that way one-handed center Webb. Keep your hand away from the line and. Put another 50 to 75 block in the wall everyday that adds up if you're getting paid by the block And if you are you just gotta raise. Not bad I decided everything look pretty smooth. I always wondered why do cinder blocks had holes and later in time I found out that cinder blocks where made specifically for cement to be poured in and capped off. My neighbors cinder block wall was not filled and the ”masons” said there was no need because it will not be barring any structural weight and after 3 years one good earthquake of a 4.4 brought the row of blocks down like dominos.
Block homes are never filled 100 percent. That's too expensive. The corners are filled and other middle sections with rebar. There are houses that have poured concrete walls, so 100% concrete and rebar, but no blocks.
Ppl think this is easy as pie. Masonry isn’t easy. Which is why every masonry company is always hiring. Which is why I love being in this industry. Not many can do it, most just talk about it on RUclips comment section. Lol. This guy has a lot to learn, but good for him, seems dedicated. It will pay off for him. He’s on his way. You gotta do it everyday to master every technique. Only comes with experience. Beauty about this trade too is not many young ppl getting into it. Certainly not for everyone.
The second video title pointing out laying “heavy / hollow” blocks. Us Yanks simply call them blocks / cement blocks / CMU’s and anyone that’s grabbed them knows they’re not light… but it’s understandable for a “Bricky” to mention the weight. However, those are certainly rough textured block. If you tried to hand float those you’d be there all day! JS
Grab that block by the wide middle piece set it down with ease, face both sides clean mud after its faced then lay the next block same way ... 25 year veteran right here... me.

Here in The United States in The State of Florida most of our homes are built out of these blocks, and then what we call “Stucco” finished to add texture. I think hideous. However, due to hurricanes this is the safest way to do things. We also refer to these as “cinderblocks”. However, I love seeing England and The Other Marvelous Nations of Great Britain still using brick as they always have 🧱. It’s a true form of art, and in my opinion the most stunningly allure of them all to this day. Here in The U.S. one single traditional “red brick” at the hardware store’s roughly about $2.50-$3.00 USD in 2023. I think that’s why we don’t see entire homes or building built in them anymore. In closing, keep up the fantastic work. P.S. my home’s brick trimmed from the ground to about quarter way up. Wish the entire place was 😎 Subscribed
My first home in Glenview, was brick half way up, and the cedar siding was attached to the studs. We cut away the attachment trim and we used a brick that was very close to the old one, and we bricked to the top. There was a limestone sill, which we took and reset it. took 2 days, 2 bricklayers for 8 hours and 3 bricklayers for 8 hours. It cost me $800 in 1980. The cost for doing it with aluminum siding was about $1200. It was Saturday one week and the next Saturday. He and a friend were the helpers on the job, mixing the mortar, handling all the brick(2500) and moving the scaffold. There was 2 large windows in the front, the brick we used was a beige color, we did a large triangular diamond with black brick, this completed the stunning brick addition.
I'm curious about tolerances because here in Australia the latest brick & block work I've been seeing on new builds is of extremely poor quality. Large gaps right down to one block sitting on top of another with all the mortar squeezed out to nothing. Alot is rendered over or coated with membrane finishes so it's hidden but peoples are paying big $$ for complete shite. So sad to see 😞

It gets filled with concrete dude. More concrete equals a stronger wall. Mortar is only to hold the blocks until it’s poured.

Try laying 9x4's in Northern Ireland. We rarely use breeze blocks. Also in footings- foundations we use 12x4's which are heavier again

Regular size regular weight blocks in Canada. 8" are incredibly light compared to 12".
I do commercial Masonry work her in The states and you are right and they are nothing compared to 12” split face
