I recently came across a video from ebay breaking down the components of Best Match search. It seemed to confirm much of what I have been sharing with you however I learned a couple things as well. In this video I will present this information to you in time for Q4. The main takeaway from the video is this “if something was working for you last year, it may not work the same or have the same impact this year”. This tells me you should always be changing your business to keep up with the have we call ebay. Check out the video below and be sure to comment…

You deserve way more credit on here. You talk about tough topics while not promoting yourself. -just info! You’re awesome. Found you after experiencing my 2nd suspected fraud order.
@@jakealan1822 thanks Jake. I appreciate it.
How nice of you to share your discoveries and information for free. I appreciate you taking the time to help us. What a kind humble heart. You’re truly a successful person in multiple ways! As always, great job!👏👏👏👏😊
Thank you for the kind words. RUclips does pay content creators as the channel grows. With that said I have never considered creating a course that I charge people for. I don’t think it’s right to reserve your best info to those who are willing to pay. We are all in this journey together and i have learned a lot from the many viewers as well.
The ebay algorithm can't be the only thing going on.
After a few slower weeks from the early July through July 29th something changed in my store.
Without me doing anything different, sales took a dramatic overnight jump.
Impressions and clicks tripled. Sales have been excellent. These results have remained steady up to today, August 18th. Three straight weeks.
Whatever ebay did, I say thank you.
That happened to me as well. The only thing I did differently was introduce auctions on a very limited basis. My store went from 750 items down to 575 in a month. And yes I have been listing daily over that time. Even my cross posting on Mercari have been selling well. Keep riding the wave.
Happened ti most sellers. All my views went to zero last night overnight. They've been upgrading since 4th quarter
I think your content is so helpful. I like that you always tell viewers the good and bad about ebay. I have been selling on eBay for over 20 years and do see the difference, but I still enjoy selling on their platform. Thanks so much for all you hard work in spreding the news and helping me as well as others improve our ebay selling 👍👍
I appreciate that Denise!
You don't need to apologize for a long video. All the information was well compressed and very interesting. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you! I’ve just started listening to y’all and really appreciate you!
Thank you, Jon. I am checking all my listings. Looking forward to your LIVE today.
Thank you for sharing this important information. Looking forward to your auction strategy.
Thanks Jon. Every little bit helps in regards to more sales.
Great video! Thanks for the tips!
Jon you are so correct about trying different things to get sales. I started 10 auctions. I sold several older BIN items from my ebay store not in my "niche". I was so glad to get rid of them. I then decided to list some things from my death pile not in my niche. I sold several of my niche items right away. Then I ran a 15% public coupon storewide and sold 5 items regular full price. Today I am going to list some items that are not my niche but relate to my niche. I can't wait to see what sells this time. I am thinking the algorythm likes variety in our ebay stores. I could be wrong but I am going to keep mixing it up as it gets me sales. I am also going to try about 100 low dollar listings with free calculated shipping and see what happens.
Great info! I'm going to review my listings with all of this in mind. Thank you, thank you!
Good Friday morning from Eastern Canada. Thanks for all your videos - so much time and work to help us beginners. Of all the sellers channels on RUclips, yours is by far the most informative and easy to follow! You are definitely my "go to" channel for selling on Ebay.
Once again.. solid gold info! Thanks! 😁
Thanks Marilyn
Excellent information, thank you so much !
Loaded with great info, Thank you
Thank you from CT. This is helpful!
Thanks so much for sharing! I'll try your suggestions.
I appreciate you so much! I am a new reseller and I am learning so much from you! Thank you!!!
90% of my listings use "sell similar" from the already sold items. IMO, half the work has already been done. I just have to double check. Sometimes I feel like its better to not seem like a business, and come across as more of a person. People are less likely to try to screw over a sale if its like a neighbor rather than a Walmart. Every single sale I sent a thank you message. Just my thought on it. Also, with everything going on with our own government, who's to say everything EBay is 100% honesty?
I agree with you. I do thank you cards, wrap the items in tissue paper and send thank you messages as soon as I see the new purchase. It helps with good reviews, return customers and, like you said be personable. Thank you can go a very long way. 😀
These are excellent things to do no matter how large your ebay store. I know people who place a note with the item asking the buyer to reach out if there is a problem. I am a big believer in fast and proactive communication. It’s probably the biggest problem on ebay (from ebay itself to the buyers) and it’s a big problem in life. Most issues can simply be avoided through good communication and most buyers appreciate good fast communication to their concerns. So keep doing it!
I always like using ebay since 2000. IA good to learn new things. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Very good video...and good quality information. I agree...it is not one variable, but many variables collectively to generate a sale. I am trying, but like you say "Flippin ain't easy". 🤔
Thank you for the video, very helpful 🙂
Nice video, Lots of good advice.
One of your best videos
Great video I had the same thought with adding auction listing started them early this week
Thanks for the info. Jon always on top of the things that matter!!!
Thank you! Almost didn’t recognize you with the new pic in your profile.
@@FlippinAintEasy lol....it might hurt me trying to grow my channel.
Great video. A lot I've heard before and I do try to implement. I do need to tweak the order of my titles, for sure.
Your precious time is much appreciated.
I'll be at Ebay Open in Los Angeles next month.
Just found your Ch and thanks for all the good info, boy I learned a lot from you.
Thanks Irene! I appreciate the sub!
Fascinating video, thank you so much.
Thank you
I just used this info to fine tune one of my listings, and it already ended up in the top 3 of that category. Thank you!
Awesome!
Price and Picture Photo are the 2 most important things.
Thank you
Good content Jon .. thanks.. I wish I knew more of how eBay has set up its site .. it’s issues with old and new info and why glitches happen! I try to interrogate my son as he has some knowledge… I’ve noticed no one is talking about this as they used to.. especially when we were suffering glitch issues!
Think of ebay like this. It is old software using old technology. When software designers implement new features on the site, they run the risk of breaking something else that was previously working. Yes they beta test many of these things but many issues (these glitches) are missed when the new feature is launched.
Jon, I always wondered about the eBay word title order, regarding brand, I sell mostly clothing and come across older unknown vintage brands. Am I still supposed to put the brand within my first five or six words? I highly doubt most shoppers are not typing in these older brand names in their search bar, I constantly struggle with this, what do you think? Thank you for the great content!!
Thanks for taking the time, I did learn some good stuff from this video. I have heard from other RUclips thrifters not to "bother" with social media. I'm on the fence about that... but I did make a lot of changes based on your explanations. I'm curious, do you use any of the third party software listed on eBay's site? I'm still small time and they all seem fairly expensive.
I use PrimeLister to cross post over to Mercari. I think it’s worth the while as i have sold an extra 200 pens in the past 2 months. Check out the link for the 14 day free trial if your interested.
Auctions are great if you are prepared to give your items away. If you do the starting auction price at .99 cents, 9 out of 10 items you sell will probably go for that. If you even just try to recoup your investment, most times there will not even be a bid.
Yes i have had this happen as well and in most of those cases we are probably talking about low demand items that did not get many views as a fixed listing. I consider most of my Auction items as loss leaders for the algorithm and for reasons i can’t explain my fixed prices sales have gone up since using auctions.
CORRECT!!! Ive had to cancel 3 items that were valuable due to that!! No way am i giving away 925 and gold for 99 cents! Sorry! I stopped doing auctions because of that! I do 'buy it now'. Havnt made any sales since i stopped the auctions.
Hey John !
Google titles can be 150 characters. However they display title up to 70 charters. Google says they recommend 5 to 65 characters for Google shopping.
That may be right but you can only use up to 80 since that’s all you can place in your eBay title.
What about capitalizing the first letter of most keywords? I was told by an ebay agent I had to use simulated diamond in my title because some people don'y know what CZ is! I see most don't, so why do I have to? Most people I belive know a CZ is not a natural diamond.
I only lead with vintage if it's something people actually search for with that item. Take Levi's for example. People will type "vintage Levis jeans" into a search bar. For things that are inherently vintage, like a toy they made 30 years ago, then it's generally not a strong keyword.
I lead with vintage with older jewelry pieces. I search that way also. It helps to weed out all the newer cheap china junk.
Yep
Pray!
Hi, I just started following you so you may have answered this in other videos, but do you know which sells best? Auction, Buy it Now, or Allow offers?
Hello Cathy. Buy it now or what is know as a good till canceled listing. I would recommend supplementing the good till cancelled listing with Best Offer, coupons and markdown sale (you need a store subscription for the last 2). Only use auctions when you have no idea what an item is worth or if you are just trying to get what you can for an item (blowing out old stock). I hope this information helps.
The best thing you said was promotion is not the item its looking farther into your items for sale. Im competetive but hang me if im doing anymore 99 cent 7 day give aways lol
Hi. Thanks. Im a subscriber.
For small items like video games, i normally use a white cardboard science board back drop and floor, so the pictures come out with only white surroundings.
Do you still recommend i use the background removing tool or just stick with my method for these smaller items ?
Every now and then you might see the small folding line of the cardboard but its still white surroundings.
For big items that will damage the cardboard or dont fit, i use the background remover.
Thanks.
Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.
Do I have to put Gold Tone in the title if its the color and not real gold?
Ebay has removed every category that made any sense for antiques and collectibles. Most of my items end up in categories that make little to no sense at all. Also atleast half or more of the Items Specifics either do not pertain to my item or I have no clue how to answer because of their terminology . They use terms that I have never heard and I have sold full time since 1985.
That being the case, would your buyer even use that filter for your item? Remember each item specific your asked to enter is a potential filter they can use to refine their search.
Jon - Q: For title length, you mention the 80 for eBay, and you also mentioned 50'ish for a proper Google search result. I'm confused... stick with the smaller, to ensure I place better on Google via promoted, and not fully use the remaining 30'ish for a better organic result?
As always, great info. Thanks for the mentoring.
@@Tim_M_ I know it’s late but somehow just seeing this. Focus on using 75-80 characters in your titles. Focus on the first 50 characters using what you would use if you were searching for that item.
Should you remove the background on all the photos, or a Just gallery photo. Great video as always. Thanks a lot
I would recommend doing it for all. With that said, maybe only for the gallery photo when you are dealing with vintage items. There’s something about using a background removal on old items that doesn’t look right to me.
16:55 I do my best to take great photos. I have a lightbox with 3 lights, take 12 square photos on a white background and I am pretty happy with the end results. I do not use a background removal tool though.
Note that I mostly sell used items.
I wonder if buyers might prefer very nice photos of the item that show some of the shadows/white background instead of photos that almost look like stock photos and makes you wonder if you are seeing the item that you are actually about to buy.
What are your thoughts on that?
Cheers,
Julien
I bought some very old vintage electronics a few weeks back and thought the background removal looked strange on those items. Got older items maybe no background removal but use s white background like you do. For most other items I’m using the background removal tool.
@@FlippinAintEasy I looked at your ebay store today and your photos are very pretty, well shot. Have you shown your photo setup before on RUclips? Cheers, Julien
I don't understand how it's possible that the listing would not show for potential buyers if not optimized. Some sellers pay an insertion fee. Wouldn't that be illegal. How could they charge money and not even list the item?
It is in their terms of service.
Regarding background removal. Do you think using a white background in my photo station I would still need to use background removal?
@@ShopontheBlvd not necessarily. Depending on how much of the shadows and yellowing you can remove from the background.
Ebay's listing tool says not to use different sized or colored fonts. Good info overall.
I agree with most of this but I have a friend that sells an average of 1,500 items per month. Never has he used a description in his listing. He sells only shoes and clothing. He only states please use photos for measurements and condition. That is all he says. He does have 8,000 plus items listed and runs discounts. Always charges shipping and free returns for 60 days.
The thing you have to realize is this is a collective of things that ebay is asking you to do. Some are weighted more than others but they all add up to having the perfect listing in eBays eyes. Ebay encourages longer return periods since most sellers do not offer 60 day returns and I’m sure ebay is giving him an additional boost because of this. If he took the time to add a more detailed description he would probably do a little better overall than he is now. For me it’s simple, if your happy with the level of sales you are seeing then don’t change a thing.
For every practice mentioned in the video, there are sellers not following it and achieving success. But doing this things in the aggregate is the best way to rank at the top of searches.
Some sites use title and others use item as in tops or pants! Crazy as all key words should be used for customer satisfaction!
I'm positive Ebay doesn't know how Cassini works. I used to develop software for Microsoft Windows. It was clear after a couple of years Microsoft was not the authoritative source of information for Windows. I think Cassini is the same way. With large software platforms it's possible for it to actually run and yet no one person knows how it works. Seen it many times. Ebay's platform exhibits the signs of a system that has been held together by duct tape and bailing wire for many years. At this point, Cassini massage's searches so much I don't think they actually know what's happening. I have noticed things in titles that work well for certain items that Ebay themselves says won't make a difference. The other thing is that lowest price isn't always the best sell. If that was the case, everything would end up being a penny when you have more than one available. I follow all these title rules and yet I still see tons of sales with horrible titles. Clearly Cassini has a mental illness. :P
the ebay background remover does not work. I have yet to get a clean removal, it look horrible
Use PhotoRoom. That’s what I use. If you are using a white background or backdrop with a white item, this can be problematic for many of these tools however.
Hi my name is shah from U.K., I want to start selling from eBay U.K. to USA how can start , I have two eBay account 16yrs old and 13yrs old , would advice me the best way to sell on usa from U.K. account
Ebay's background removal does not work for me. It comes out horrible.
I use Photoroom for background removal.
I have never used background removal personally I like to see the item in the persons place, I want to buy from a person infact preferably a hobbyist not a full time reseller who is selling something they no longer want. If the background is removed this screams corporation & or scams. I love unique photos of items as well when shopping, with background removal the photos look generic there's no emotion to them. For this reason I have a stained real wood table & chipboard wall where I take all of my photos. The chipboard might be off-putting to rich people however ebay has a lot of people looking for deals so in that sense I think it is fine. I have heard that they don't show up on google as much when they have a real background but that's something I'm willing to sacrifice to maintain the appearance of being a small seller.
I shouldn't put vintage in the title?
Save it for the end if you have space
First :-)
Do you use the AI listing tool?
No. I use Gemini AI to help with item descriptions.
Auctions have always been the most lucrative aspect of eBay for me, but most sellers still won’t try them.
Definitely not for everyone just won new pair of shoes for my wife for .99 + 10 shipping because new seller ran auction. Stuff I sell usually takes least month to find the right buyer.
What would you do- if you register new account for selling- at the same details as other accounts- and ebay did block it (not a registered user anymore) and in appeal they reply- Your account was suspended because it exhibits a risk to eBay and to its community. As eBay is an Internet-based business, and its members are our customers, we must carefully weigh the risks involved in allowing users on our site. From time to time, we find accounts that present a level of risk that is unacceptable and are, therefore, suspended.
We have determined that it is in our mutual best interest to part ways. We regret any inconvenience this matter may cause you.
No to promoted!
eBays background removal sucks and erases part of the picture which looks stupid
So gears up to promoted bizz selling they dont give a s...t
Thank goodness I stopped selling on eBay, this is more complex than brain surgery.
Oh and everybody buy XRP crypto or get left behind
But sellers use stock photos crap titles and outsell me by a long shot have horrible feedback
Please explain how sellers using 1 photo or stock photos get tons of sales
Possibly high promoted rates. This is just one out of many reasons why.
