Harbor Freight Quick Hitch Tips and Modification

  • I purchased a 3-point quick hitch for my Kubota B2301 tractor to speed up the changing of 3-point implements. I decided on Harbor Freight quick hitch knowing that it would require a slight modification (different hook). It turns out I had to mod the mod, plus I learned a few other helpful things along the way.

    I bought the HF quick hitch and the alternate top hook in your description. I used a 1 1/2 Milwaukee metal dozer bit and drilled a hole about 1/2in lower and it worked like a champ no other modifications needed. 💪

    I found it easier to modify each of my implements to fit the hitch rather than to modify hitch. I've been using each of those implements for 15 years now with the same hitch setting.

    this is by far the best video and instructions on the quick hitch
    no welding, just replacing the top hook, with one that sticks out farther,
    the small amount of machine work, in my opinion is the hardest thing to get done in the video
    also, the bushings make MOST of the slop, go away. i have the same implements, as he does in the video, and just like everyone else, ran into the problems with the top hook.
    i saw another video, where the cut approx 1/8-1/4 off front edge of hook, so it catches before it hits, a way to solve problem without buying modified hook. thing is with these 3 point quick hitches, they all have the hook issue, especially the"aftermarket" ones, such as titan, h&h, etc.
    i just about guarantee they all are made by same company in china, so do yourself a favor, and
    buy the cheaper one from HF, do the mods, and enjoy!!! thats what i did, and with everything, i got around 130-150$ in everything, thats cheaper than the titan, which retails @ 150-160$, BEFORE mods. im telling you, folks, its the same 3 point quick hitch as the HF and H&H.
    i got the HF @ 95$ tax included!!!
    go luck everyone, GOD bless, go TRUMP!!!!

    I wanted a 'thicker' top bushing on my implements. I bought a 5/8" id x 1" od x 1.5" long bushing from from A&A Manufacturing. These are very well made, thick walled, and finished pieces and work great. I bought 4 of them for less than $20 shipped. Many other sizes available. No drilling or looking thru hardware stores.

    I purchased the same Harbor Freight quick hitch, I did purchase a different top hook, but I did not use the bolts, instead I used removable pins so I could easily adjust the top hook, so far I only have a back blade and a wood chipper but the top pins are at different heights, it works fine.

      Both my QH-compatible implements have the same top-to-bottom pin spacing, so no need to move the hook. However, implements I get in the future may have a different spacing where the top hook would require a different mounting location. If so I'll definitively switch to quick release pins.

    I bought my QH from Agri-Supply due to videos like this that documented the HF's version and it's interference with the top hook and the implements. I had to modify 4 of my 5 implements to fit my QH. After that, I was golden. Easily one of the best mods you can do to your tractor. Good video: thanks for posting it!

    I had the same issue with HF QH. I too purchased a different top-hook for $17 and that satisfied usage with several implements (without having to adjust bolts). My rotary cutter is not quick hitch compatible but I'll modify it right before brush cutting season (smile). Today, I just finished making a cement ballast box for rear weight that would fit my HF quick hitch. I'll post that soon. Enjoyed your video. Yep, I went through the same issues but until ALL tractor companies make a "Universal Standard" for all quick-hitch compatible implements to fit quick hitches, tractor owners will go through the same head-scratching issues. I'm not sure about this but I think if you had purchased the Kubota QH, it might have fit all your Land Pride QH compatible implements (not sure though) however, you would have paid more than $83. John Deere is the same with their I-Match QH. Enjoyed a full-video watch. NEW SUBSCRIBER here!! I'm going to check out your bucket level video next. Have a fine week.

    • @thecountrylivingproject3263
      @thecountrylivingproject3263  4 года назад

      I was thinking the same thing about a Land Pride QH -- attachments would fit out of the box but I wasn't about to pay $400 for one. I think the quick hitch standard has a set width for bottom pins but not necessarily a fixed height between top and bottom , thus the up/down adjustment for top hook you see on all QHs. The silly thing is that all HF had to do was to ship with a slightly different top hook and one more hole lower under the current lowest hole for top hook adjustment and it wouldn't require any mods at all.
      Also, good to know there are still some ppl out there that watch an entire video still. Are you going to make a video of your rotary cutter mod to make it QH compatible? I'd be interested in seeing that. I have an ancient back blade that needs the same treatment.

    The only "issue" it has is with people who dont have Quick Hitch compatible implements! No mods required when using it for what it's designed for. That should do the trick for the interference issue. If your implements have a larger top-to-bottom spacing than the Land Pride QH compatible implements grinding out the bottom of the hook may not even be necessary.

  • @Skyhawk945

    The problem i encountered after purchasing the quick hitch, new top hook, and bushing's is it's only Category 0 compliant. I found the 5/8 lifting pins to be undersized and extremely lose fitting on my 3 point lift arms. The 5/8 lifting pins are only rated for Category O and tractor's up to 20 horsepower. I found the undersized pins to be the deal breaker. I don't know why they designed the hitch with such small pins - very disappointed.

    Excellent observations, I'm working on mine and I ending widening the hitch 1.75" since some of my attachments are wider than the hitch hooks for the top I have to use a different way for each atachment.

    • @thecountrylivingproject3263
      @thecountrylivingproject3263  3 года назад +1

      Sounds like a major project. I have one attachment (back blade) that won't work with my quick hitch because there's a support bracket directly under the top attachment point where the top hook would need to reside before raising to engage the implement. Fortunately, the width of the lower pins is the same as the hitch. A little fabrication for the top pin and I'm all set. Good luck with your conversion.

    • @papageo5

    Do you think you could also use the sleeve bushings instead of the roll pin bushings on all implements? Once those roll pins are in, they wouldn't be simple to get off if you were using the implement on a QH tractor sometimes and on a tractor without a QH sometimes.

    I have a Titan back blade so will a harbor freight QH attach without modifying it? Thank you.

    • @thecountrylivingproject3263
      @thecountrylivingproject3263  4 года назад

      I looked up the Titan back blades and as long as it's one that is quick hitch compatible I think it could work without modifying the top hook. The reason I say that is because with my situation I had to have the top hook all the way at the bottom of the bracket, but it still needed to go a bit lower (thus the reason to grind it out). With the Titan back blade, there are two sets of holes for the top pin. If you were to put the pin in the top set of holes most likely you could simply move the hook on the quick hitch up to a higher position to properly engage the pin on the implement.

    Upon seeing this I googled for hook replacements and came across several, including kens. I just got some of his bolt in hooks and didn’t know he offered this. It’s $40 but if it fits right and I don’t have to modify the modification, it would be worth it to me. Is that where you got this or was this a different cheaper hook? What are measurements needed so I can confirm if kens will be the solution I want?

    • @thecountrylivingproject3263
      @thecountrylivingproject3263  4 года назад

      I looked up that hook to which you referring. Although the web page includes dimensions of the hook it doesn't include the most critical dimension for this situation which is the depth of the cutout (distance between bolt holes and bottom of the radius) so I couldn't say if it would require machining or not. The one I got is from AgriSupply.com for $25. The distance between the top and bottom pins on my Land Pride QH compatible implements was a bit too short (for this QH), which is why the mod was necessary. It is possible that the top-to-bottom pin distance on other manufacturers of implements is different. If they are even 1/8" greater or more, that mod won't be necessary.

    Nice mods but still a worthless piece of iron. Why do I say that? Because I have half a dozen tractor implements and no two will fit the quick hitch without moving the top hook up or down and several don't have the room for the top hook to fit. You have to put the hook on the implement and then slip the bolts in place. I finally left the quick hitch in the field because it wasn't worth the trouble to use. Now if you have a tractor with one implement you might be able to set it up and use it to simply take the implement off the tractor and put it back on later with no adjustments. I now have a pair of the easy change adapters that fit on the outriggers. Back up and lift the implement and then simply attach the top link to the implement. Yes you have to get off the tractor but it's still quick and a lot easier than the quick hitch and it fit's all my implements without any adjustments.

    • @tenncutt
      @tenncutt 4 года назад

      The "worthless piece of iron" as you call it works perfectly with QH compatible implements that it is designed for. Just because it doesn't fit your non-compatible implements doesn't reflect on a the QH. No offense intended it's just the truth. My QH from HF works perfectly with all my QH compatible implements with no mods to anything.
