    My childhood palaeontology autism surfaced for the first time in like 10+ years watching this trailer to remind me that, while sharks existed during the Cretaceous period, Carcharadon Megalodon definitely wasn’t one of them. And that one memory has now started unlocking so much repressed trivia on fossils and dinosaur species and I have no idea how to stop it. Thanks MEG 2.

    For anyone who's genuinely curious: Megalodon was indeed a prehistoric shark species, however it didn't live in the Mesozoic along with dinosaurs. It actually lived in the period after that, the Cenozoic (yes I'm a huge Paleo-nerd)

    In the first The Meg book, the first scene is of a simulation where a Megalodon does eat a Tyrannosaurus with it later being explained that it was a simulation and that this couldn’t happen since Tyrannosaurs were from the Mesozoic and the Meg in the Cenozoic. The trailer may be referencing that scene in the book.

The first movie needed that Eli Roth splatter to make it worthwhile, but WB went for a PG-13 rating. I'm hoping Ben Wheatley can infuse this sequel with a meaner edge and a more authentic sense of humor. That being said, the trailer looks uninspired. Idk if the Chinese are interested in Kaijus in a similar way to the Japanese. Kaijus were an impactful metaphor for the sudden and overwhelming destructive force of the nuclear bombs. Some of them may have actually thought - in the moments immediately following Hiroshima and Nagasaki - that they were some kind of supernatural force. It was cathartic for them to create and consume media in which Japanese experts, through their excellence and determination, were able to defeat that destructive force. China, which was horribly brutalized by Japan during WWII, treats Japan a lot like Quebec treats Canada; a nation from which the primary objective is to distinguish the self. That said, being in such close proximity, one cannot help but be influenced by cultural exports like, e.g., anime. So yeah, unsure about China's feelings on Kaijus.

    • @DeFaulty101
      @DeFaulty101 Год назад +1

      @Antonio Gramsci Your comment is needlessly hostile. You picked a good target b/c I'm good natured and won't retaliate with vitriol, but you also picked a bad target because - let's be real - there's nothing in my comment which suggests lack of familiarity with the politics, history and culture of China. Have you considered that you don't know enough about Quebec? Read the Tin Flute. It does a good job illustrating the hardships endured by the people of Quebec in English dominated Canada early on in the country's history, explaining in many ways the resentment passed down through generations. Given the cruelty, many quite fairly considered their nation to be a colony of Canada, rather than simply another province within the nation of Canada. Many still do, largely due to intergenerational trauma. Canada itself - via the constitution act of 1982 (or was it 81?) recognizes them as a "nation within a nation." Especially given its own history with partial colonization under imperial Japan, there are parallels to be drawn for sure. Perhaps there are better comparisons, but it's a pretty good example to use if you're speaking to a Canadian like Adam, for whom Quebec's deliberate cultural distancing from the rest of Canada would be a saliant issue.
      Your point about the country trying more greatly to distinguish itself from the west is an interesting one. It might explain the focus (as it itself might argue) on 'public welfare' at the expense of individual liberty (i.e., restrictions on content, restrictions on gaming hours for youths, etc.), as opposed to the west where it's the other way around, but please note that my comment was regarding whether China would or wouldn't be into Kaijus, hence, that's not really relevant. That isn't to say it's not relevant in the grand scheme of things, but it does nothing to help us determine the attitude of China toward Kaijus. It's not too dissimilar from criticizing me for failing to recognize the greater eradication perpetrated against the Jewish people when I mentioned WWII. It's just not important for understanding the material in question.

      @@DrFrazzle I just rewatched the trailer to make sure. It does show the water going deeper, but not as deep to fit a Megalodon (imo).
      The Meg errupts directly behind the T-rex, which was standing in the middle of the shallow water instead of on the edge of the cliff.
      I don't get how the Meg wouldn't beach itself doing this. On one hand I would think it got back into the water, because its body was that huge so it could use it as a leverage effect to push itself back in. But on the other hand, then it contradicts the fact it would fit in that "deeper" part. Because it's even bigger than the part that is shown while coming out of the water.

    Why do you care if it’s a stock scream? It just looks like a fun movie. No need to pick it to death

    Why do Chinese people swim in hundred foot deep water? Even the most crowded beach has swimmers staying within sight of the beach.

    This looks like if the first Meg movie had a baby with Jurassic Park and Cosmic Sin. I know this isn’t meant to be taken seriously, but did we really need a sequel to (as YMS once said) one of the most uninspired scripts ever written?

    As a movie though, it wasn’t great unless you only watch these kind of movies
