- UCLA Film & Television RESTORED Edition!
Stars: Gloria Swanson, Melvyn Douglas, Boris Karloff
Director: Mervyn LeRoy
In this Pre-Code Hollywood Romantic Comedy, a Hungarian opera singer finds her career stalled until she discovers romance with a handsome admirer. Will he be the man of her dreams or just a gigolo?
This movie makes me want a gentleman in the worst way! When he kissed the bruises on her beautiful, white arms... Ahh!! I almost died!!
Hi Rachel 🍕Thanks for Watching PizzaFLIX. May the Sauce Be with you 🍕
I love your channel!!
@@violamateo Oh, my gosh!! I hadn't put that together!!
Swanson was pregnant at the time, however Mr. Goldwyn, the boss of the studio, wasn't aware of it. He had bought her entire wardrobe from Chanel of Paris, it cost him a fortune, but later they had to resize all the dresses because Swanson was getting heavier and they were too tight for her. Also this movie was Melvyn Douglas' first film ever in Hollywood, it's a gamble to pair a literally unknown face with one of the highest paid actresses of 1920s, but it paid off, epically for Douglas, it paved a path for his success as the suave leading man of 1930s.
I read she deeply regretted aborting her kids.
I thought she looked rather thick in the waist.
Yep! This is a great one! I shall mention you, Pizza Flex! Thank you so much!
Just became personal BEST MOVIE Romcom! Enjoyed from start 2 Fina😄. No 🥱. Well done ALL! GLORIA SWANSON was Amazing, Lovely & acting SUBERB! Never seen her present a character so well portrayed. Well done MELVYN DOUGLAS! HIS character was so entertaining. Even script kept me guessing. Time WELL SPENT!😊😃😍
Hi Jenns 🍕Thanks for watching PizzaFLIX. May the Sauce be with you 🍕
This film must have sparkled and jumped off the screen in the original silver nitrate print. Thanks for posting.
Gloria Swanson's autobiography is a great read,, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about her life, her time in early Hollywood and her theater work in both Paris and New York, as well as her nine marriages, and her dalliance with the senior Joe Kennedy. Asked by someone why she wrote her autobiography, she replied ''I thought I should write it before someone else did".
I had a cousin who had 4 or 5 marriages by the age of 32. Nobody was sure exactly how many. Bizarre to say the least. She seemed like a normal teen growing up. I will say she was cute and outgoing. And she was a part-time country singer last time I checked.
Nine times?!
Yes, I read it when I was a teenager back on the 80’s - it was really good.
One of my treasured possessions is the uncorrected proof copy of SWANSON ON SWANSON, signed by her. According to the purchase record, it was her own review copy (impossible to verify, but I'll take the seller's word).
I thoroughly enjoyed it as well. I remember when she described how she got onto a very strict health food diet as a young woman and stayed with it all her life. But she tell the doctor/dietician that no way would she ever quit smoking and she didn't!
I really appreciate this film being presented in its entirety. Too often 5 or more minutes are missing. Thank you PizzaFlix! May the sauce be with you! 🍕🎥😃
I love Melvyn Douglas so much. He was awesome in more ways than one.
I gotta stop watching these Melvyn Douglas movies! I can’t think, eat or sleep right for days afterwards! 😂❤
@@C.Hawkshawhubba hubba 😍😅
I just came across him for the first time tonight!
Passed away 9yrs before my birth
....and I'm in love 😁😅
He's got this unbridled sexiness that is especially delicious
I even love him in Mr Blandings Builds A Dream House , with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy as their lawyer friend . Enjoyable 😅😂😊
@@MaritzaAgosto-e1g I love that movie. :)
What a wonderful movie. Great storyline, dialog, sets, clothing and actors. ALL of them. Mervyn Douglas was wonderful as always. Thank you so much for the opportunity to enjoy it.
Thank you for adding close captions (CC) on your movies! 👍
YOTO AGREE! THANK YOU PIZZA FLIX!
Many years ago now, I found a hard copy of; SWANSON ON SWANSON. This autobiography was illuminating in the storied past of Hollywood and the real people Gloria carried on with throughout her career.
Read this bio if you are a vintage movie buff, you'll be rewarded greatly with rich and sobering real life drama.
Thx! Will do😁! First time (remembering) her n a movie. WowsiDowser, is she one of the best or WHAT!?😊 Remembering, now, a movie about retiring films star from silent 2 talkies. Like her best n this movie. Well done ALL!
@@jenns. yes I love her too Gloria Swanson what was the name of that wow movie again Jennifer thanks!?
Pizza Flix always has the best Flix
Such a delightful movie, one I had not seen before. Loved all the actors especially Melvin Douglas. Thank you PizzaFlix.
Melvyn Douglas is great , I love how his voice gets really high when he gets excited 😂 one of his funniest roles was in "Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House" with Myrna Loy and Cary Grant ❤
Swanson was something wonderful. Just adorable!
Looks like a good one. I love the actress, Gloria Swanson. Thanks for the movie. 🙂
I have read her book.
@@AnnaZeman-yu8dg I had no idea she wrote a book. I will search for it. Thank you for sharing. 🙂
By the way- I knew I recognized a young Boris Karloff as a butler !
Thank you is really too trivial an expression for what I feel. Sincere gratitude and appreciation. 🤩❤️
I haven’t enjoyed a film so much in a very long time.
I have seen hundreds and hundreds of films in my lifetime, beginning with silent films but I never knew this one. I’ve seen several of Gloria Swanson’s films of the silent period and of course the incredible Sunset Boulevard.
This was really stupendous.
Melvyn Douglas was as always not to be outdone. He was in this film everything that he needed to be. And he never lost that quality even as an elderly actor.
I was friends for more than 30 years with Myrna Loy and she often spoke of her great fondness, respect and admiration for Melvyn and also for his wife Helen.
He was not only charming and handsome but a very fine human being something that was nice to know.
Gloria Swanson was absolutely beautiful, and delightful in this film and of course her fame allowed her the right to choose who designed her clothes and from beginning to end she was magnificently attired by Coco Chanel.
The quality of this film was astonishing thanks to its restoration, as well as the quality that was put into the film production, scenery, cast.
Hollywood at its finest which makes one realise how far far down it has fallen.
I met Swanson in 1980. She was just nasty...but she did give me an autograph with the handwritten quote "I'm ready for my close up." I still have it.
💖 eckankar ~ Details - please! How old was she in 1980 & where did you see her & under what circumstances & did you snap her photo & what was she wearing & why was she so nasty & was she mean to everybody???
Wowwwww - what a cool autograph: "I'm ready for my close-up." 😎 Was that from "Sunset Boulevard"? Wish she would've been nice, though. What's up with her?!?
👍✌🤙

👊 🇺🇸 ⚖
If you wish for peace, prepare for war. 💖
We all have our moments. It's probably just bad timing, considering she was gracious enough to give you an autograph and a note.
Well this movie has everything: drop dead handsome and suave Melvyn Douglas in his first film, gorgeous Gloria Swanson emoting all over the place in a Chanel wardrobe no less ( who knew she could sing?!) breathtaking sets including the reproduction of Venice canals, a little pre-code sex, snappy dialog, fantastic character actors, including J. Carol Nash in a small part as a radio announcer, and would you believe Boris Karloff as a waiter?! ( the same year as he did Frankenstein). All beautifully directed by the great Mervin Leroy. What's not to like?! 👍 A bit of trivia: the following year (1932) Douglas was again to play opposite Karloff (in a very different role) in director James Whale's "The Old Dark House" along with Charles Laughton, Raymond Massey and Gloria Stewart. One of my all time favorite spooky films.
Spooky? It's hilarious.
What a delight. The entire cast was great fun! Gloria Swanson beams. Her comic timing, carriage and delivery are all visible to me in a later great comedienne, Madeline Kahn.
I just watched this great film and immediately thought of Madeleine Kahn in Young Frankenstein. Both great actresses. Now I must find more Gloria Swanson films. 1:21:51
I can't believe I've gone all my life and was ignorant of Gloria Swanson's talent. Great actress and a beautiful natural singing voice.
He was the type of man that a father would feel good about dating his daughter. My ex-wife couldn't understand that.
A fake gigolo? Lol
🍕🍕Thank you 🍕🍕A good movie . A must watch for me with the great Boris Karloff , even if it is a small part . Nice to see J Caroll Naish .❤🍕A good week to you PizzaFlix .🍕🍕👍
I, too, was surprised to see a young Boris Karloff as the waiter.Awsome!!!
@@dianapearson1771 👍He is the best , a great talent .❤
Gloria Swanson was a STAR 🌟 in the true sense of the word... Mevlyn Douglas gave the ladies a run for their money ✨️
Was he a player?!
I believe without a doubt that this was Swanson's finest performance

What a wonderful movie. Such light hearted comedy, Just makes you laugh and smile just watching it.
I’m going to enjoy this! ❤️👍🏻
fabulous print and sound!
Yes, surprisingly good quality.
Mr. Pizza Flix, outstanding work, thank you. Films that have writers!!! And not a CGI orgy.
Amen
Boris Karloff , I would know that voice anywhere
Thanks So much - Having a Pre-Code fetish these days and Gloria Swanson's top of the heap!❤😊
Did Karloff do this before Frankenstein ?
Hi Larry 🍕This film was released one month after Karloff's career-defining role in Frankenstein.
@@PizzaFLIX Then he and Melvyn Douglas were in “ The Old Dark House”.
@@larryfreda5208 Is that a good one? Is it scary?
@@C.Hawkshaw it’s creepy, funny and everything you’d expect from a James Whale horror movie.
A wonderful movie. I had not seen it before. I got to meet and talk with Ms. Swanson on New York's Fifth Avenue in the mid-1970s. Thanks for the upload.
Gloria.. I'm ready for my close up.... The last film I saw her in... Being younger is fun to see
Oh my gosh Melvin Douglas😘😘💕💕🥰😍😘🥳💙💙💙one of the most beautiful love scenes !! ..lovely gowns and settings.........love Gloria Swanson too she's darling ...one of my favorite movies now!!!!.
Melvin Douglass ❤
@@flopsseysw *Melvyn Douglas
anything with melvyn Douglas is worthwhile. thanks!
Melvyn Douglas would serve first as a great leading man in the 1930's, and in many other roles later in his career. Gloria Swanson was fun, and veteran Alison Skipworth even more fun. It has the high quality of a Samuel Goldwyn film, with a fine cast and crew, with men like Gregg Toland (one of the best cameramen ever), Alfred Newman's music and Mervyn Le Roy's direction. And a not-so-monstrous Boris Karloff, too.
such a delightful movie, sweet music, with an old beautiful story. These were such romantic times, and movies will never be the same again. I was impressed by Gloria's clothes, especially because they were personally designed by Coco Chanel. The jumpsuit with pants from the beginning of the movie was the best ive seen designed for 1930s. I must say though that i really didnt like Gloria's acting. So melodramatic, as if she were still playing in silent movies and there were no sound. I cant understand why she received so much appreciation during her time, but maybe such big dramatic acts were really fashionable then. She was also not very beautiful, her face and even her body shape were not the best ive seen, so why was she so praised? Cant understand. Melvyn though played amazing for his debut acting role.
I have to agree though I do like her, especially in ' Sunset Boulevard '...but she always over acted. In Sunset Boulevard the over acting was a perfect fit.
@@mannyj4751 a true diva :)
Great movie... always a Happy Ending.
I've got to look at their birthdates. Gloria Swanson had to be 10 years older than Melvin Douglas 🙄
Nope I was wrong. Miss Swanson was only 2 years older than Mr. Douglas 🙂....my bad!
Don't feel bad, I did the same thing.
@@cclyon I guess she had a tough life! 🙂
What a fantastic cast, and Gregg Toland's cinematography. And having worked in opera for a time made some of the jokes and characters even more entertaining, because they're true!
I love you PIZZA FLIX! Thank you again.
🍕Hi Gabriella 🍕love is the most important thing 🍕
I've seen some movies 10 times, but never saw this until now. I really enjoyed it.
@@posttyped11 🍕That’s the magic of PizzaFLIX 🍕
More of these restored movies, please! This was excellent.
Great quality print, and fun - if you don't take the characters too seriously: a self-centered prima donna with a touch of silent screen melodrama, a forceful leading man, and a fiancé who feels entitled to more than vanilla.
Modern movies of today have nothing on the pre codes of Hollywood's Golden Era...
Melvin Douglas ..oh my Gosh. 🔥🤎💕😘😍😘🥰🤎
Every time I think of Gloria Swanson I think of robin williams 😂
❤😘😘😘😘😘😘✨✨✨✨
Those were real jewels and they were hers!
This was a lot of fun!
This was wonderful, Pizza!!! Thank you SO much!!!!
LOVED THAT MOVIE
Melvyn Douglas at his best. THE perfect early 1930s sophisticated and romantic leading man..
This Movie is more than Half over & they Still aren't together, well maybe now they are !!😊
Great movie! I ❤ the classics!
What a terrific movie 👍
Gloria Swanson was a beautiful and a magnificent actress as she portrayed her roles pretty well . Melvyn Douglas play his role with great excellence ... quite handsome . All the other actors in the film were extremely brilliant .
May they RIP 💐🌸🪷🌹🌺🌻🌼🌷🪻⚘️
About a year late getting to the picture show but so glad I made it. Swanson was quite the comedian. An iconic Hollywood star. One of Gloria's famous quotes: "I have decided that when I am a star, I will be every inch and every moment a star." Carol Burnett's Nora Desmond. Belated thanks PF
Fabulous movie !! Great acting and script!! , they don’t make movies like this anymore!!!
I watched this movie last year and once again tonight. Thank you😊....
If you have access to " Sunset Boulevard " we would love to see it again.
Samuel Goldwyn had a sure eye for theatrical properties and stars. This light-hearted comedy deals well with the more serious, underlying themes. I wonder how an audience in 2023 would react to the comic moments.
Happy Monday night at the movie. Thanks for sharing
It's wonderful delightful movie. I watched it twice. Fabulous performance from every one 💖💖💖💖💖
Swanson was very beautiful, if a bit toothy.
(The autocorrect rather amusingly wrote Swansong.)
wow! Boris Karloff, the same year he did Frankenstein
Swanson might have been the "star" of this movie but Melvyn Douglas stole every scene from her. Swanson was never able to fully untrain herself from over acting the part as if she were still making silent films. She comes across as if she's doing a bad impersonation of herself with creepy Sunset Boulevard vibes. Compared to Melvyn's performance which is so natural , effortless and flawless it just makes Swanson's exaggerated delivery of her lines stand out even more and not in a good way. I've never understood how and why Swanson became a "star" . I can't help but wonder how much better this little gem of a film would have been with a more talented leading lady that could do the part justice and hold her own against Douglas.
Picture's pretty sharp, good sound, an "A" picture...on PizzaFlix?!
Hi Garry🍕at least you spell our name right. Thanks for caring 🍕May the Sauce be with you🍕

In reality, with all its jewels, she could have fed various third world countries.
So could all the sports players today!!! Stop being siy.
wonderful to see Boris Karloff as a butler
Great and funny movie ❤ thanks 😊
The way he kissed his aunt tho 😒
I think she is very desirable !!
Excellent
Not much screen chemistry
I love Gloria Swanson

Oh she was so lovely
Did anyone notice who his butler was?
Boris Karloff.. I believe
Chicken sandwich on dry toast ... yummy . 😋

Absolutely adored this film!!! Watched it three (four now!) nights ago - late - fell asleep B4 I could comm, then forgot to ... sooo sorry cuz realllyyy wanted & needed to express myself on this jewel.
This film surpassed my wildest expectations. The sets were absolutely exquisite. Some scenes seemed like I was watching a play. 😎 Some scenes were reminiscent of the silent film era with exaggerated acting, but it was never really over-done. Some scenes were just truly glitzy Hollywoody. The delicate balance of comedy & drama & romance was superb. LUV this film!!!
😎😎😎🍕
Haha!!! KNEW she'd tape the bouquet card back together - lol!!! (Luv it when I'm right!) DIDN'T suspect that luscious ending - LUV scriptwriters & directors that are able to surprise me!!! "And how!" 😉 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Wish I could get my hands on the recipe for that cool air-fragrancer that the dashing Douglas in his tux & tails pumped all over his suite's parlor in anticipation of not-so-coy Miss Gloria's unannounced return. (Realllyyyyy do want that recipe.)💯
The music & gowns ... magnificent.💋
Luvvved the gondolas scenes. Read last winter that Venice's canals were drying up. Sad.
Btw: Just watched this for the second time now & luv & appreciate it E-VON more. Thanks, again,🍕!!!
PS ~ Had planned on dinner & the movie you posted today (oops ... after midnight now = you posted it yesterday) after a quick comm for this film that I didn't get to do four days ago now ... got enticed into watching it again - lol! Lucky me!!!

A modern remake of this would be fun
What a Drama Queens' Delight!💃 Love it .....Thank u ' Gosh. He is so Handsome and she soooooo dramatic!
🍕And that’s an understatement. 🍕
good that this is preserved. Really awful movie, however.. silly dialogue.. could have been cut by at least half an hour.. Douglass is capable and Swanson is good at adding "talking" to her acting...
I really enjoyed the comedy and thank you for that

You're driving me craaazeee with all of your new notifications - LUVVV it!!!😏
My planned Dinner & a Movie with "Noon Wine" DAYZ😯(WEEK?!?) ago never got to materialize cuz unexpected LIFE happened.😕 (I WILL get to that one - it's a MAJOR GOTTA SEE for me, but gotta be in the right mood ... YES!!! BAM!!! There - I said it - I'm "one of those" Moody Movie Watchers. And when THAT mood strikes, again, I thank you for having that film in the wings for me!!!💯 (I WAS in the mood, but LIFE got in the way & just really ruined it.🤨)
I DID watch (😯forget the title!) a few nights ago the 1966 film about that Colorado beauty queen turned criminal true story with the criminal husband who conned her. Sooo sad! Tragic. Did NOT get to comm about it, nor thank you cuz fell asleep watching it & had to try to find my 💤 spot & finish it the next day & then 😟 more LIFE INTRUDED & ever so harshly!!!
Accept my sincere thanks now🍕 cuz it was GREAT - luvvved the true story factor & the script. The cinematography was spectacular! That one surprised me cuz, with only a few exceptions, I'm not a big fan of flicks made in the 1960s.
Hey!!! E-VON though I may not actually watch every film you grant me, I DO play 'em whilst I'm doing whatever it is I have to put ahead of 'em & Like 'em & let the ads run to help you out a tish ~ my Commz are lackadaisical ... sorry ...😔 mostly cuz I know I tend to babble, once I start, so usually avoid starting a comm.
This Gloria Swanson film has been playing whilst writing & am intrigued!!! Time to eat lunch & dinner at bedtime - again - & WILL "pay-attention-watch" it cuz ... in the mood.

A well made movie at a time when Laura & Hardy were just getting their feet wet in sound movies. Well photographed, edited and with great acting by Swanson and Melvin Leroy. Not stagnant or staged, unlike other contemporary films. And in mint condition for a film 92 years old.
I feel like I found a real gem! Beautiful movie from beginning to end - scenery, clothes, acting beautiful Gloria and debonair Melvin- superb !
Thankyou, Pizza flix, for this classic. Gloria Swanson was hardly a beauty, was she?
LOVE Gloria Swanson and Melvin Douglas what a wonderful movie!!!
