And one might say that the subject matter is "advanced" for the 1930s. But I suppose that was at least partly the reason for the Hayes (decency) Code.

Arsenic is naturally present in water that people drink daily with no ill effects. They become immune to a small amount. Cyanide is more dangerous. You will find cyanide in bitter almonds used to make almond extract. Bitter almonds must be heat treated to be safe enough for extracts used in baking, etc. Also in the seeds of some common fruits such as apples and plums. My Mom and I ate the peeled seeds regularly. Again, no ill effects.

This is pre-code. The producers of movies were reluctant to give up their freedom. In fact movies made a year before pre-code were not rereleased after the code. Several things in this would be dealt with much differently after the code. Suicide for instance, badies deserved their cumupance but by God not through suicide. Later only good people commited suicide to primarily save someone else.

Five years earlier, in 1927 actor H. B. Warner starred as Jesus Christ in Cecil B. DeMille's silent classic King of Kings with brilliant believeability, exuding saintliness, compassion and nearly a nimbus.
Fourteen years later, in 1946 he would play George Bailey's childhood druggist boss, who drunk with grief at a telegram his son had died in the Great War, misprescribes for a patient, and boxes George's ears when George refuses to deliver it, but then hugs him gratefully when George explains that he had unwittingly prescribed poison.

I just adored watching H.B. Warner in any of his films. He was so debonair, such class, and his diction (I think back almost 100 years ago they called it elocution! See? Even that word sounds classier!).
I remember being so delighted and surprised when I saw his “cameo” with Gloria Swanson, Anna Q. Nilsson and Buster Keaton! It was really crazy to my sister (who’s NOT into old films at all!) when I got so excited at seeing them and flipped their names off so fast, you’d have thought they all just starred in a big Box Office draw that year! 😂😘♥️💕🙋‍♀️
Speaking of which, “Hollywood” will never be what it was beginning in the Silent Era and steaming blockbusters straight through the 40’s. I often think Hollywood just began to sleep a bit starting in the 60’s. Oh, of course there were the greats of that time......The Sound of Music, Dr. Zhivago, Cape Fear, The Graduate, etc......but something of that beautiful sparkle and aura which caused Hollywood to be called “Tinseltown” was almost gone. It always seemed to me that Our Marilyn took it with her when she was murdered.
So I just keep watching the “oldies” and allowing myself to wander through the pictures I’ve made up in my mind....like what huge stars’ dressing rooms (really small houses for many!), The love matches of the day ( such as Marian Davies and “Pops”), Tracy and Hepburn (I choose to believe they were both straight and much in love), the great Madame Stanwyck, who continued working well into what others call “the golden years”.....she was almost 60 yo when she STARTED working in The Big Valley and 80 yo when she starred in The Thornbirds.
They just don’t make ‘me like that anymore! And so I thank The Lord God for videotapes. 😉👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌹🙏🕊✝️🙋‍♀️💕💜🕎

I do NOT want to give anything away, but there is maturity in terms of years, and maturity in terms of outlook on life and understanding of reality/mental maturity. There is a huge difference. With mental maturity comes the understanding and acceptance of reality. When a person is able to accept reality, that person can have a happy and successful life.

The old movie women of that era always had their hair permed close to their scalp. Even though they were in black and white movies, the makeup was very thick. What I hate the most is that both men and women wear leather shoes and smoke in the room. Don't pay attention to image hygiene at all. The world's degenerate nuclear war started at that time, and they were all things that were not in harmony with God's will. I thought I was modern.

@@2degucitas It is a personal preference with film styles. Having a slower pace can reflect more on the actual gaps in conversation or awkward silences that happen in real life. Modern films are often set at such a rush that you don't take in emotions and subtle expressions, scenery or sets. Throughout this film the costumes, cars and sets were so lovely I wanted time to enjoy them.

One thing that can’t be ignored here is Joyce Compton, an actress with a speaking voice so annoying it amounts to an endurance test for any viewer to sit through for an entire movie. Her histrionic dialogue delivery only goes to demonstrate that while having definite feminine appeal, she was an actress of minimal acting talent. That being said, what we have here once again presented is a story topic that seemed to be a favorite one in that abbreviated time frame beginning with the introduction of talking movies and institution of the Hays movie code. A mere 3-4 year period when infidelity, family reputation and the stark division of living conditions between the social elite and the average person were showcased. Strict moral standards and adherence to social proprieties were central to so many movies of this period. Amounting to a reputation ruined meaning a life ruined. With death seen as the only way out.
