      I relished Mary's girlfriend coming over to help her the most, with her east coast urban acting, showing friendship affection for a single girl becoming a single mother in a big city. The moment of womanly company without Jimmy of showing how to make it an alright time as working girls is what otherwise wouldn't be a seen scene after the Hays Code. After 1934, it's de-naturalized and the romantic love between men and women is tailored with aim to show only the social procurement of it, rather than all social life together and what's in between. I feel that part of the film solidifies "Strange Marriage"(1932) as anchored just a bit more of Mary 's survival and vivacity than the begotten sweet re-unioning.

      It's known as The Great Depression. My mother raised me on stories about the hard times everyone had and how they coped. Her family lived in the country so they could at least grow a vegetable garden, have some chickens and eggs, and share a cow with neighboring relatives for milk. (As long as the weather cooperated, they could scrounge up seeds for planting, the cow didn't go dry or die, and the hens kept laying, that is.) Her father had a badly crippled leg, so no one would hire him for farm work. They were so cash poor for things that couldn't be raised, like clothes and doctor bills. My dad's family was even worse off, his mother died when he was 10, leaving 7 children behind, born within 12 years. The last birth of twin infants killed her and they died soon after. Grandpa never remarried until he was an old man.

    It is a well written pre code movie and cute in almost every way. But haven't seen a comment about the rape that caused the baby?! So much of the nonconsentual acts in this either undermined cultural attitudes toward women or reflected them!

    • @jillfryer6699
      @jillfryer6699 Год назад +1

      True, she didn't look too happy afterwards but I didn't think the reason was rape! I didn't realize they done it at all it till the baby turned up. When I saw that scene I assumed he had fallen into a drunk stupor on the bed lurching at her and she'd left him to spend the night on the couch. Then this baby appears. Technically, hohum, if they were married, it wouldn't have been rape back then. That was a clumsy bit in an otherwise neat script.

    Considering the popularity of these PRE-CODE HOLLYWOOD film, yu'd think hollywood would get a clue. I know the script be a problem for hollywood writers because these were set mostly in the early 20th century, and part of the drama and humor comes from that time period. But hollywood still makes movies about ancient times. Just do a time travel -- not really, just write about 'those times', and joila! I've only watched the first 10 minutes or so and I think that I've decided the rich man marries an unknown woman because he doesn't want to marry the woman his mum has chosen for him. Gee whillickers! snicker And divorce wasn't easy back then. You know. I've changed my mind. Hollywood couldn't do it anymore. So, let's just keep restoring these old 'film' and present them on youtube. Even my grandkids are watching them!

    • @jillfryer6699
      @jillfryer6699 Год назад +1

      I thought he married her firstly because he was sorry for her being on the verge of being charged with prostitution having been set up by a cop. Secondly because he was still drunk and therefore sentimental. And thirdly, when he'd sobered up enough to think about it, because it'd get him out of having to marry the perfectly OK (rich) woman his mum had lined up. I've seen versions of this plot in a few of these pre codes now. It must've been a popular subject of speculation at the time. Like: Is love real? What is the meaning of money? Etc.

      @@FungusMossGnosis true true... On the other side of the coin, I rrrrreally love the honesty of old precode movies. Wish modern movies were all as honestly written. Also, I appreciate your input. So many people comment in such an angry way. It is nice to have an adult discussion with someone☺

      Rape? Where do you get rape from? She agreed to it - she was in love with him, remember? Unless of course you're using the new expanded meaning of the term where unless she specifically asks for it it's rape (and even then it may be, if she decides it is). Anyway, I notice you're not bothered about hitting people in the face on a whim and rendering them unconscious.

      @@GetMeThere1 Well I am a senior and Chris is correct. Also the code saved the movie industry. And it was and still is voluntary. The industry was dying before the codes were put in. You need to look at some of the silents and early talkies. Very shocking stuff. Explicit. Families, women and kids quit going because they did not know what to expect
      The code was put in by the studios to get the audiences back.

      @@saran3214 What you are saying is illogical on its face: A director can't direct a good film unless somebody else tells him what should be in it? Your position is a perfect absurdity Oh, and...I'm a senior too (but I wasn't around in the twenties, lol). Today we have films ranging from the most conceivably obscene pornography to childish (corporate inspired) crap also often obscene in it's own way -- and there's nobody there to tell anyone what they can and can't do -- and the films end up as good (or bad) as the director can make them. Instead films are rated based on their content, and the viewer can decide for himself what to see. Can you really be so obtuse?
