    That's one thing I love about technology today is with RUclips you can see things that we're never shown on network TV back in the day . I'm appreciative of all these people who download these beautiful almost forgotten classics.

    There's something really modern and natural about the actors. It might be also, because this is filmed pre-censorship? Ann Harding is absolutely relatable as Daisy. Everyone performed superbly, but the chemistry between her and Tom was so real. And yes- the wardrobe is gorgeous!

    Leslie Howard was the Allies' ambassador of good will. Because of that and being an actor, Joseph Goebels, Nazi minister of propaganda, wanted him dead. It was discovered in the records of Goebels' office that he was having Howard tracked. His plane was shot down by a pair of Ju 88s. How terribly sad. His role as the Scarlet Pimpernel was brilliantly acted; it's a movie I never tire of. The ending with Chauvlin (Ramond Massey) is counting down the last moments of Sir Percy's execution is one of the finest of all time. The evil look of Chauvlin's face, from up and under, is marvelously chilling...then Sir Percy walks in looking for his hat. I get tears in my eyes as Sir Percy and Lady Blakeney safely land in England. Once a year for me.

    In the stage play, Tom’s fraught relationship with his father is more emphasized, which is better explanation for his irresolute life, but in the movie we just blame the wife. Rather dishonest, being that it was clear to me that Cee wanted a conventional life from the beginning, and wanted to draw Tom away from his bohemian life. Quite a risqué topic for 1932, a man living with a woman whom he returns to after leaving his wife. Well, being at the center of a scandalous divorce will certainly help Daisy’s artwork sell.

    Myrna Loy understands the camera far better than Ann Harding. Harding acts like she’s on stage projecting to the rear of the theatre. In effect her over melodramatic projection (rather than emotional substance) as such stiffens Lesley Howards acting when they are together too. LH is far more natural around ML… even as the eccentric he plays. No less great stuff!

      Yes, from what I’ve read, he was probably involved with British Intelligence, was flying back from Spain - a morale-boosting stint he did for the Allies. Some say the gentleman he was traveling with looked quite a bit like Churchill, and that’s why the Luftwaffe shot the commercial aircraft down......something Germany agreed NOT to do, as commercial airlines shuttled many civilians from the continent to England and back. (When did the Germans at that time ever keep a promise?). Howard’s body was never recovered from the sea where the plane ditched. He had been married 27 years to the same woman, was highly respected as an actor, film producer and generous human being. Leslie Howard was only 50 years old when he was killed. He is still mourned and missed 79 years later by fans all over the world.

    This movie for ladies is very stagey. Philip Barry! This is old Hollywood.The English spoken is fairly Anglo-pompous, not normal. I cannot watch Leslie Howard and not remember that his life was allowed to be sacrificed by the English in WWII. Fine actor.

    • @unowen-nh9ov
      @unowen-nh9ov Год назад +1

      It was hardly sacrificed, it's not like Nazis were shooting down every plane over the Channel or air traffic would have been prohibited, actor Phillips Holmes also killed flying during WWII, coincidentally he screen tested for Ashley in GWTW, had he won the role it might have saved his life.

    The dignity and honorable way in which they represented even the most scandalous situations is really amazing. They knew how to treat the most sensitive subjects in life like crimes, infidelities and sin in such a respectable manner to give you the whole morale and show how sins and inordinate behavior always have nefarious consequences but in a way that respected the audiences and clearly taught a great christisn moral lesson. There is no comparison between these great movies of a bygone era when America was still a great Christian nation and between the pathetic movies of today that are devoid of any redemptive values, with disgusting sex scenes, nudity, obscene language and extreme bloody violence. It is a breath of fresh air to watch these beautiful old movies some of which are nearly 100 years old now. Thank you for uploading this beautiful movie. May Our Lord and God Jesus Christ Bless you. In The Name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit The Only One True God as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end Amen ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
