- From Wikipedia:
The Rains Came is a 1939 20th Century Fox film based on an American novel by Louis Bromfield (published in June 1937 by Harper & Brothers). The film was directed by Clarence Brown and stars Tyrone Power, Myrna Loy, George Brent, Brenda Joyce, Nigel Bruce, and Maria Ouspenskaya.
A remake of the film was released in 1955 under the name The Rains of Ranchipur.
I never get tired of watching it. All the old black and whites are my favorites. Thanks!
The flood scene is AMAZING, particularly when it's crashing down the staircase! I don't know what, if any, special effects were used, but it's downright terrifying.
One commentor said it got the first Oscar ever awarded for special effects.
Yes, this is why the movie was so realistic, truly horrifying ...
A brief synopsis would have been great for this classic
IKR! No CGI, and look what they did with their hands back then.
No wonder there have been remakes of this Movie. Interesting times in History, an excellent job representing people liveing through these "interesting" times.
Well Done! This Film is so well done. Thank you for posting this Film.
Special effects are incredible.
The very first movie to win the oscar for 'special effects' !
Great trivia note. Glad I saw it before watching movie. Thanks!
Yes me too. 🇮🇪☘️🙏
Indeed - there was the possibility to award "special Oscars", and everybody thought the amazing special effects in "San Francisco" (1936) and "The Hurricane" (1937, undeservedly almost forgotten, directed by John Ford) would be awarded such an un-categorized "special Oscar", but no - much grumbling, so they decided to create the "Best Visual Effects" Oscar (or back then just called special effects, split into "sound" and "visual")),, which went to this film with its 33 million gallons of water and climactic earthquake - sort of combining the special effects of "San Francisco" and "The Hurricane".
Cool info thanks ❤
This is a fine movie! I enjoy honorable characters.
I agree with all the positive comments on here. My favorite part of the movie starts around the one hour and one mark. I had the close caption turned on and the guy chanting in Hindi, praying, was captioned on screen. It was the most hilarious nonsensical gobbledygook. It cracked me up.
A GRAND ROMANCE AND SHOW OF HUMANITY' DIVERSITY FACING TRAGEDY FRONT ON.
Great Movie! A lot more than I expected
Agreed re the sfx. To me, far more impressive artistry than CGI has been so far. What was happening in 1939 to make the movies this incredible?! Was it war?
Quite an amazing film for the time.
I would like to see "The Best Years of Our Lives " staring Myrna Loy these old movies are a great unknown to me .
Find "Best Years." Usually, its on TCM. When you consider the timing of its release and the heartbreaking acting, it'll touch you, I guarantee. Myrna Loy's first scene with Frederic March is one of the classic scenes of all time.

My mom’s two crushes: Tyrone Power and Nat King Cole.
Tyron Powers is absolutely gorgeous as an East Indian and I have always thought Myrna Loy was beautiful as well. Real love this movie!
i thought Myrna was partially Asian ...
she is so adorable
always think that i would like her in real life
if i had ever had the good fortune when she was alive
What a wonderful movie. LOVED IT!!!
Great movie!
One beautiful scene after the next comprises its own narrative. The rest of the film appears almost irrelevant.
Queda en el recuerdo. Ya no hay películas ni actores, ni hombres así
Much better than the remake.
You're rigth!
Love George Brent
Darn good movie. George Brent was irresistible as the British rake; Myrna a married Hussy; & Tyron the dedicated hero for his people. We don't have actors that can perform like this today. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I adore George Brent…his acting is impeccable and he’s such a handsome man. I melt every time he speaks 💕
George Brent! Wow. Myrna Loy...great movie!
Every generation have excellent actors.
Or even close.
Agree!
I'm amazed at the special effects in this film made in 1939. It's well worth watching for this alone.
It won an Oscar for special effects 1939

This was made when acting mattered. Myrna Loy in ANYTHING is fantastic. See an interview with her if you can. She was just wonderful. And Tyrone Power, oh oh. If I were that gorgeous I'd be afraid to leave the house. Great classic. Thank you!!
She was a class act on stage and off!
Tyrone power seems all but forgotten. I have always loved ehim ever since seeing him in Zorro.
@@LindaStoronsky-yk4df He tried to ditch his 'Zorro' image after the war for more-serious material ( in pictures like "The Razor's Edge) and he wasn't averse to acting on stage.
Haha 😂 👍
My father bore a close resemblance to Tyrone Power, and my mother told me that was the main reason she married him❤❤❤
I love actress Maria Ouspanskaya, who has the same Russian accent whether she plays a Hindu queen, a German countess, or a gypsy fortuneteller - and it doesn't matter! She is always wonderful.
🩷💔🫡 Yes, she is wonderful and noble as the mother in The Mortal Storm (1940)
You left out that other Great Classic 'Waterloo Bridge'💐
Movies like this take you away to another place for awhile. 🍿
New Jersey?
This makes me want to read the book again. I'd never known of the intracracies of the caste system before reading it. I went on to read every one of Mr Bromfields books, including the non fiction "Pleasant Valley". I can't reccomend them enough.
Can you believe i read the book 5 times in my life until now , i am 59 and in French it has almost 900 pages in tiny writing but i still keep it
Wonderful movie, beautifully acted by everyone. The disaster scenes were spectacular and looked so real. Tyrone Power was really very handsome in this role and played his character with empathy and dedication.
Tyrone was one of the most beautiful guys ever at this age. His greatest role, however, may have been as the cad in "Witness for the Prosecution," with the courage to act his age as his looks faded.
he died at age 44 in in 1958 ...@@daphnewilson7966
I think people can enhance there age if they take care of them selves Stuart granger did
This is one of those movies that I can watch many times. I hope it is as enjoyable for all of you
I m wondering how they did the earthquake scene? It's 1939😯
I just watched the movie and at that part of the film, was reminded of SAN FRANCISCO, made at MGM, in 1936.
Damn, Myrna Loy was gorgeous!
A major Betty, and first class all the way.
Just the cinematography alone is breathtaking. The cast is spectacular and the direction lovely.
Wonderful film! Visual effects still stunning!
Wonderful film, great acting and great special effects -- all without sex, violence and CGI! Will wonders never cease?! Thanks for posting!
Thank you for this wonderful movie. I loved it all and George Brent is one of my all time favorites.
He was especially good in "The Great Lie" with Bette Davis and Mary Astor.
What a great movie and effects for its time. The strong character of the Rani, well played by the Russian actress Maria Ouspanskaya who lived through the Tsarist Empire and two world wars. What a fascinating person she must have been as a teacher and actress.
This is a much better version than the rather silly and cloying 1955 remake (The Rains of Ranchipur).
Horrible ending but Tyrone Power was extroidary. The whole cast was. Great movie!
George Brent was so charismatic. So much the gentleman as well as handsome, along with a lovely tone of voice.
My absolute favorite with George Brent...can't even count how many times I have watched this. Just finished watching it...and getting ready to watch it again...right now!
Really Greater movie
The book is even better! The movie left out some details too but it's a good movie nevertheless👍
You sound just like me! If I like a movie I'll watch time and time again x
@@maxinelowe6285 And....I usually discover something new and intriguing that I had missed before.
I think George Brent made every movie he was in better! Fine gentleman actor!
This movie feels like today, August 26, 2020 Pandemic! Amazing how much history repeats itself!🤔🌐📽
The first time Myrna Loy sees Tyrone Power, she says ; "Not bad... Not bad at all", with spinkles in her eyes.
-"You can say that again, your ladyship. I've got spinkles in my eyes too. He's surely the most attraticve "pale copper Apollo" of the hollywood history !
I read the book, part of the family's small collection at the age of 14 ,didn't follow the nuances or plot very much except that it was so exotic & the Westerners were so oddly out of place. After seeing this I remember my father coming home all flustered & telling my mum that we, 2 young kids & he, had shared a cable car trip,12 people I think up Table mountain,Cape Town with Tyrone Power.
Now I understand.
Her highness totally stole the show. So powerful, super cute, and with no visible effort. She was really good. I gotta look her up. This film is artsy and trying for something bigger. It is certainly way, way, ahead of its time here.
The great Maria Ouspenskaya
Who is "her highmess"?

Great film! Great Mr. Tyrone Power!!! So talented, so versatile, so subtle, so attractive!! Thank you!!
It's a Saturday nite at New York's famed Roxy Theatre in 1939 where a packed audience settles back to enjoy a great cast & production of "The Rains Came." Academy Award special effects. Wonder how any of those folks in the flood, buildings, dam & bridge collapse didn't get hurt!! Thanks for allowing us to see this Hollywood underrated classic.
Myrna Loy is underrated too... but she probably wouldn't disagree w you.
It makes me so happy to see so many people enjoying some classic Hollywood, and being apple to appreciate art from certain times in history. :) Have a great day and I hope you enjoyed the film.
I saw it last year.
Hypo Lyxa: Thanks. The same to you! :)
What they say is absolutely true: nothing can beat black and white old Hollywood movies! Nothing!
.
.
Black and white movies were absolutely the best!
Yes, good! and not predictable like most films made after the 1950's 😉
I kept my black and white TV and took it with me to college in the late 70's. I only went to color when it stopped working.
Great death scene. I think this was Tyrone Power's best role.
Exquisite corpse stare!!
Loved it thank you. Much better than the 1955 remake!
I havent actually seen the remake but I pushed your like button automatically. Its hard to imagine a remake that could top this original. Fabulous, outstanding cinemaphotography and special effects
And my sister has an elephant chair like the one that the kids rode on. This is the first time Ive seen one on an elephant!
I've seen both films, and you're right about that. The 1939 film is far better, and Tyrone Power & Myrna Loy are far better than Lana Turner and Richard Burton.
A Master piece of FILM ART 🎨 📸 & movie 👏 👏 👏
Why can’t my Indian doctor be that handsome ? 😂 Great movie and actors. Special effects pretty decent for that time.
I am an Indian, watching this in 2020...Tyrone Power looks so handsome as an Indian...
BHAG.. boss D. K...
If you say so but, I, personally don't like white people portraying other races. And even though I love old Hollywood , have to say that they were racists.
@@gerica82 That is technically speaking racist, because a person of color is not being considered classy enough to potraye himself on screen .But I was meant Tyrone Power did fit the role substantially, although not so in terms of skin color
@@gerica82 And which Indian movie star should have played the role here? Since there were none in 1939 your claims of "racism" are actually a call for censorship, that this educated Indian doctor shouldn't be portrayed on screen. Without "racist" Gone With the Wind, Hattie McDaniel would not have been awarded her Oscar, decades before another actor of colour would be nominated again.
@@unowen-nh9ov yeah, its me, I am the problem.
Fantastic movie superb actors n a great theme...how lucky to see these old movies golden n charming .... Spot on direction simple a benevolent 🎉🎉
Ty. So enjoyed it and I thought I was a classic movie afficinado, but I miss this one!
Third time to watch this classic, each time as great as the last. The special effects,
titles and sets were as good any today, only more realistic. This production deserved
all awards received and then some.
Tyrone power and robert Taylor were the most handsome actors of that era.
Don't forget Gary Cooper.
Myrna Loy is so beautiful!
She was a class act both on screen and off.
Dog nosed.
I haven't seen this in a long time. They don't make Movies like this anymore.
I love the black and white .
myrna is by far my favourite actress of all time. what a delight to see her acting!
Right on!
Rain is such a beautiful protagonist in most film noirs.
Your highness is the druggist who slapped around young George Bailey.
Talk about an actor, portrayed as " tall, dark and handsome." Tyrone Power as the Indian physician Rama Nassir.
Except he wasn't Indian, was he🤣🤣
A little tan make up and bingo better looking than the actual thing.
Myrna Loy’s beauty is so soft and serene
My father met Tyrone Power, and said he started eating avocados because Tyrone liked them. I'm guessing my father (born 1920) might have seen this movie (when he would have been 19 or 20).
Love Tyrone Power, and William Powell, Myrna and Asta's sidekick in the "Thin Man Series.
Power or Powel, both pit a smile on my face.
Not William Powell - It's George Brent
"Don't betray the people who trust you."
Whatever you don't like about this film get over it. It is among the best of American film making, The cinematography is superb as are the special effects. A beautiful haunting song that has the power to stay with you even if you don't remember the melody, if indeed there is a melody. There is much said in the film without the use of words. Eyes, facial expressions, body language says so much. The cast does a superb job all the way around. Joseph Schildkraut, is a ham, and the thorn in the film, I'm getting over it. The cast is so good there is no best, just perhaps, your own favorite. Maria Ouspenskaya gives a truly stunning performance. This is one of the films I admire the most, having seen it many times, and never tiring of it. The scene in the palace, with lightening flashes , shadows from the decorative pierced screens, and the wind blowing the curtain is extraordinary, filled with erotic tension it is supremely accomplished film making.
Good points about the use of the love melody. For that, you have to credit composer Alfred Newman. If you probably noticed, Newman used snippets of the melody the first time Myrna Loy laid eyes on Tyrone Power, or because he took her to the room where the man was singing the ballad. Then, throughout the film, just any time you saw Loy and Power together, you heard the melody's motif, particularly at about the 1:12 mark when Newman throws in a beautiful harp solo with a closeup of Loy. Newman has always been my favorite composer from Hollywood's Golden Age, not because he had the genius of, say, Bernard Herrmann, but because of his versatility, whether he does a love story like this film or "Love is a Many Splendored Thing,'' religious epics like ''The Song of Bernadette,'' ''David and Bathsheba''or ''The Robe,'' or historical films like ''The Hunchback of Notre Dame'' or ''The Diary of Anne Frank.' Throw in his adaptations of many of Rodgers & Hammerstei's great musicals and his 20-year administrative duties as head of the great 20th Century-Fox music department and you have one of true giants of Hollywood
Why so hostile?
It's corny, cheesy and perpetuates myths about history, not to mention using caucasians to play Indians. It's cheapness personified! Hard to suffer through 5 minutes of this atrocity!
It is interesting that Tyrone never has an accent in any of his movies. I think in long run that was a good choice. He has a very American accent no matter where he is. In one movie he was English and had no accent.
Oh, my goodness, what a truly magnificent movie indeed !! I was captivated through the entire production and oh how refreshing the actors were, like it was when people loved each other in that time! A tear for its memory and a wish for a natural passing. I mourn those memories. Oh, how we forget as the frog is boiled ... .. ..
It's movies like this shows why 20th Century Fox has always been at the forefront of Special Visual Effects! 🙂🙂🆗
The landslides and floods in India today, brought on by climate change, are similar to those in this movie.
People coming together to make the worst tragedies to be and do the best they can with what they have.
I remembered this great movie from years and years ago, and just had to watch it again. Is there any actor more handsome than Tyrone Power! I'd watch any move he's in.
nobody comes close today and before.THE ULTIMATE IMAGE OF A MALE MOVIE STAR! this film and JESSE JAMES 1939 were the two biggest hits that year making him number two at the boxoffice behind micky rooney and before clark gable.
AnneCherch: No, there isn't! :)
@@-elchoya9832 I watched the JESSE JAMES movie yesterday. Enjoyed Power and Fonda together as the James brothers. 👏👍👍
Myrna Loy goves a fantastic, subtle, nuanced performance that is so moving when she realizes she is loved by the one she loves. She is very real among all the Hollywood unreality.
Love this movie! I saw it many years ago so I'm so glad I stumbled across it again to watch!
the accents just fly around in every direction like swallows in a june dusk.
A film of excellence ,superbly crafted and acted. Movie making at its' best.
This is the first film I saw with Myrna Loy and Tyrone Power. I liked it a lot. The subtle interracial love plot surely caused controversy back then. I agree with other posters, the special effects were amazing.
No, it didn't cause controversy.
I could look into Tyrone Power's magnificent eyes forever.
So do I! :)
I remember Alice Fay had said in an interview that when you kissed Tyrone Power you went to heaven. Can't remember her exact words as it was such a long time ago. But she should know; she was his co-star in quite a few movies. Those old movies were the greatest!

One of my favorite movies. Thanks for posting it.
What a movie masterpiece classic actors like Tyronne Power, Myrna Loy George Brent plus a host of others their performances make this movie the classic that it is not like todays movies full of killing gore the standard of todays actors they just do not cut it.

Definitely a worthy tale of conflicting x-cultural values amidst sinuous 'trials' of often murky infidelity. 🙄
An unusual role for ever-versatile Tyrone Power, with wonderful Nigel Bruce of Dr. Watson / Holmes fame.
Convincingly terrifying scenes of earthquake destruction and resulting tsunami tides spreading disease.
Filmed at the beautiful El Prado in San Diego's historic Balboa Park, and detailed sets at 20th Century Fox
A perfect "warm-up" role for Maria Ouspenskaya in preparation for _'The Wolf Man'_ a year later..... 😲
I have seen this ,years ago ,didn't recall the name of it ,lol
When Tyrone is talking with George he has a turban, a brown face and a white leg.
I missed that part.
Great movie ...please tell me where can I get the soundtrack...especially the song "Mohana" at 38:09
I don't know, but remember a movie with Margaret O'Brien in which that song was featured.
GREAT CAST, GREAT DIRECTOR, BUT SOMETHING MISSING!!!!!!!
Thank you !!! ❤️🌸🌹❤️🌺🌹🌺🌸
Well the composer knew nothing about Hindustani classical music. Indian dance bares no resemblance also.
Nice movie, although it would've been nice if they cast Indian actors to play Indian characters. But then, at the time Indian cinema had not been as developed as Hollywood was.
films have always needed stars to sell them
and it's part of the business
if you can get magnificent tyrone power to play a part,
than you use him...
comments on racism in these comments aside,
i think it's just movie business
there was a big uproar among the Japanese about all the Hong Kong actresses used in Memoirs of a Geisha
but the Hong Kong actresses were more famous international stars and
that's part of getting people to come.
the objections i think more interesting are like what my japanese friend said,
her objection was that the Hong Kong actresses especially Michelle Yeoh had not been trained in kimono wearing
and there's a scene where she teaches that to someone else which is just laughable,
alongwith her tanned face
Having been in several monsoons, I was impressed with the realistic monsoon effect they created.... but the earthquake, collapsing palace, and floods were awesome! Very convincing, better than in many modern films with expensive special effects. Superb.
Watching this is like viewing a textbook on cinematography. Gorgeous shots. Similar to modern recordings, this is like the analog version of recorded sound versus today’s digitally recorded music. Analog just sounds better, in my opinion.
You can actually hear what they're saying, too. They enunciate and there's not a lot of background noise.
Brenda Joyce as Fern had closeup shots of her face that I felt, figuratively speaking, were like looking in the gateway of heaven. There was a beautiful lady ancient Greek? Philosopher who taught that outward beauty could -- I stress could -- reflect a relative degree of inner beauty, the greatest beauty and happiness being that of a moral or righteous life such as that of an immortal or god.... 🎉 for Betty, who retired from acting in 1949....
Talk about great acting. So good I felt like I was part of the screen play. Thank you for a great movie!
tyrone had 2 top ten hits in 1939,this and JESSE JAMES,he was number 2 at the boxoffice beating clark gable.
A terrific movie. Not only Myrna Loy but the director,Clarence Brown, were loaned out to Fox from MGM. Myrna Loy's best performance by far. And she played a character that was nothing like the "Perfect Wife" characters she often played. 1939 was a good year for George Brent. He was superb in Dark Victory and this movie. 6:31 6:31
Tyrone is gorgeous of course( Irish origin?) But only reading his lines- a little more Stanislavskij, please. Not so the others
Wow, what a movie and a half! 👏 Thank you!
