I have read this classic novel several times in my 67 yr old life, but never saw the movie til now, n I am REALLY pucking up on a lot of things I dont remember realizing from just reading the book, which makes it a VERY successful movie version, true to the intentions if the GREAT American writer, Ernest Hemingway, of whom I am a huge fan!!! The Spanish guitar music in the 1957 film "The Sun Also Rises" was performed by a soloist named Vicente Gomez. He not only performed the guitar parts but also contributed to the composition of one of the cues. Alexander Courage arranged the traditional Spanish music for the street scenes.

I had a black one in the 1970's as a teenager n I also wore mine till it became a rag!!! The clothes they made then were far superior to the junk they put out now!!! Thank GOD some of us were lucky enough to remember when quality n beauty were inherent in EVERYTHING we did!!! I SORELY miss those days!!!

I love these old movies. Every now and then you see something that makes you grin. At about 20:30, in the rear window of the car, right after WWI, is traffic full of cars from the 50’s.
The movie that made me realise that if the crowd is cheering for something it may not make it right. Shocking for a child. Cowards would harass a bull and think it entertainment.

Most male cattle are made into steers and slaughtered for food by age 2-3. A bull destined for the corrida de toros lives a longer, leisurely, indulged life, and has a chance to get back at humanity before they go. Considering the options a bull has I think he would, if cognizant of a choice, opt to take his chance in the corrida, versus living as a steer for 2 years and then dying. A far nobler life, given his options.
Only the Minoans understood true courage when facing a bull. Their entertainment was to do acrobatics over and around the bull (not torture and then kill it).
I always check to be sure the ending is there before I watch a film. Sooooo, I won't be watching this one. How sad. Maybe I can find it somewhere else. I won't be subscribing here.

Thanks for sharing this film. Tyrone Power died just one year after this film was made and Errol Flynn died two years after. The film was troubled by many late casting changes and had continuity issues. The film was supposed to be set in Pamplona, Spain, but the season was not suitable so the crew went to Mexico instead. Ernest Hemingway walked out of the film after just 25 minutes saying the film looked silly because a Mexican location was used for a significant part of the film.

Flynn played himself....an aging drunk. He's only 58 n this movie and looks at least 10+ yrs older. His lifestyle aged him. What a fun role for Eva....every man falling n love with her. The first taxi ride, set in the 20's with American cars from the 50's following behind was the start of it for me, and the failure to capture the styles and atmospher of the 20's that followed did not impress. .

Maybe he thought she deserved better, but he died of jealousy every time he saw her interacting with another man. But true love means being able to conquer the challenges together, as a couple!

End not showing. I saw this movie as a child, 12 yo maybe. Did not understand male impotency and a woman in love with him but needing sex action with other men. I knew a woman like that, in real life, she left her husband because he became impotent. I truly dislike her when a co worker married, she became friends with the wife's family, real close, that guy was like the Robert in this story, but she finally gave in and they started having an affair.
In 1920 every day clothing for normal people was different as you think. You always think the Great Gatsby. But that is American and High Society. Not France after WWI. And Spain. And Ava Gardner was not the girl type for the 1920s. She had not the look we know for that time.
This was the Paris of Mistinguett (whose legs were insured in 1919 for 50,000 Francs) and Maurice Chevalier. Also the unforgettable Josephine Baker. Plus more truly great artists and writers than you could shake a stick at ! One would have thought that just 35 years later they could have done a more convincing job of reproducing it.
Ernest Hemingway is rated as a writer -- but he has never inspired me like Steinbeck, or Graham Greene in UK or Sholokov in USSR who wrote during the same period.

But what if the film hadn’t been miscast so badly? Who made those decision? Ava Gardner and Juliette Gréco were perfect, but the male leads were all 20-25 yrs too old. And poor Tyrone Power … good as always, but too old for the part and would have looked 10yrs younger had the brylcream been removed from his hair.

There is a reason why they called them "The Lost Generation". These actors did a good job of portraying their post-war "Lostness".

PAINFULL, I BAILED AT 1:21 NO WONDER HEMMINGWAY BAILED FROM THE PRODUCTION, NOT "BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY"

Hell of a cast,but sheesh,Flynn is really looking... old.
Flynn's post-mortem exam showed that his body was in a very poor state for someone of his age: he'd been lucky to make it to age 50.
Power was unlucky in having lived with a heart problem that he'd inherited from his father, who also died young. He died while filming a forgettable "sword-and-sandles" picture in Spain, in 1958.
@@None-zc5vg yep,I think it was mentioned that Flynn had the internal organs of a man 20 yrs older - or something to that effect.Hard drinking/smoking really took its toll on Flynn.
Also,a shame about Power,only 44 when he died.And a pretty good actor - I have a LOT of his movies.

A good role for Errol Flynn, and the drunk scenes were not acting.
I'm bored with the movie already. Poor sound throughout it. Was confused about what year it was because of their costumes. And now I'm watching a whole movie because a guy feel sorry for himself because he is impotent.

How come Flynn don’t deny she was putting hand in hand with Tyrone and he wanted to marry her. 🤔 and can’t stand that boxer barge in everywhere. There is no great story in this film but roaming with undeceive drinker brett lady drifter
