When I was a child we left Afghanistan because of war and we lived in Moscow for 2 years. Our Russian neighbor's gave us a bowl of this salad for Christmas. I fell in love with this salad and it's part of my childhood memories. Now I live in Germany. This salad is part of my every party salad for my guests and I prepare it also often for my daughter . I loved it as a child and my daughter loves it too. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🇷🇺

To everyone saying that was a lot of salt she added to the salad: салат оливье is typically made from boiled ingredients like potatoes, carrots, peas, and eggs. Aside from the pickles and the ham that she added, almost everything is *completely* unflavoured. She also made a huge bowl, as салат оливье is generally made for multiple people to eat at once. Heavy-duty salt is *required* whenever you make that much salad.

This salad is way better the next day. It is really recommended that you make it one day before serving. The tastes and smells need to blend in the fridge for at least 12 hours before serving. This is valid for many salads with potatoes.

We Iranians learned this recipe from the Russians, where it was invented by Lucien Olivier who was the chef at the Hermitage restaurant in Moscow in the 1860s. Iranians usually leave the carrots out too. But the original recipe called for carrots and ham
      .

Before the Invasion 1400 years ago, the Majority of Iranians were Zoroastrians. Their dietary laws of were and still are more restrictive as they divided meat as Ormozdi and ahrimani. They generally don't eat beef or pork, mostly allow sheep (male only) and poultry. This is true of the Parsi community in India today as well. Ancient Iranians made fun of Romans, Arabs etc.. because they'd eat anything. Furthermore they didn't eat much meat in general and cow, ox, bull, steer, cattle and wild cattle (deer, caribou/reindeer, moose and elk,) bison, buffalo, water buffalo, yak, wild cattle, antelope and gazelle, rabbit) are considered not permitted. While pigs weren't considered dirty by Zoroastrians they didn't eat them either due to their intelligenceLarge fish is also forbiddenThe Armenians also being Zoroastrian at the time didn't eat those species either and started eating cattle, pork etc... as they abandoned Zoroastrianism for Christianity. authenticgathazoroastrianism.org/2012/03/05/zoroastrian-dietary-laws-animal-friendship-and-stewardship/

I took a Russian language class in college taught by a professor who had visited Russia on several occasions. She formed a club that we all participated in that included get togethers around cultural topics, including food. This is the recipe she shared for this salad, except she used chicken instead of ham. Another student subbed tuna once (which I didn't find nearly as good as the chicken), but never ham. I'll definitely give this a shot as the chicken version is one of my favorite salads. Pickles and peas absolutely make it!

To this this Olivier Russian potato salad you've so pleasantly displayed here, we at home, add boiled and diced beet , boiling everything separately so everything will keep its own taste. The salt we bring to the table in a shaker for anyone who wants it. Also separately at the table there's always a black-pepper grinder and olive oil. This is a very popular dish in Iran
I learned it from my Iranian friend
Their version is grating all the ingredients and they eat it with flat bread and they mostly use chicken or mortadella

This is a stae dish in pakistani cuisine too... But we add a few extra things... Like shredded cabbage, diced apples, elbow macaroni and chopped pineapples and raisins... And fresh cream in place of the sour cream. Very lush. And we call it Russian salad

Hi! Welcome to my channel! You can also use sour cream, greek yogurt or even a bit of ranch dressing (my mom always add some). Enjoy!

My answer is late but I hope it will be useful. My mom doesn't like mayonnaise, so when I was a kid, we always added sour cream with salt, black pepper and mustard to this salad

There are a lot of different version of the salad Olivier, so don't say that she's not doing one because she didn't put the ingredient you put in your version.

No salt, mayo is enough. Aslo, add one tbs of green beans liquid for more flavor. And most important let it sit in the fringe for an hour so all ingredients get together.
